Episode 2 Yeardley Love At the University of Virginia, famously founded by Thomas Jefferson, no student had ever killed another. In 2010, that changed. Popular and athletic senior Yeardley Love was found in her bed by her roommate, bloodied and battered. A hole in her bedroom door told police that her killer had been very angry – and one man in Yeardley's life was known for his violent rages. Her ex-boyfriend, fellow senior George Huguely, was arrested for her murder. Huguely stood trial and was convicted. Yeardley's mother and sister sued both the school and Huguely, but the suit against UVA was dropped. Yeardley's family won a large civil verdict against her killer, and as a result of Yeardley's death, UVA now requires students to report arrests, and the Virginia General Assembly passed a law making it easier for people who are in a relationship to obtain a protection order against their abusive partner. Katie Hood knows how to follow her instincts and heart when making major life decisions. Today, Katie is CEO of the One Love Foundation, the nation's leading educator of young people on the topic of healthy and unhealthy relationships.  Katie shares the reasons why she joined One Love and her ambitious goals for reducing abusive relationships. We discuss how One Love was founded by Sharon Love to honor the memory of her daughter, Yeardley Love,  who was beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend three weeks before her graduation from the University of Virginia.  Sharon never imagined relationship abuse was something she needed to consider for her daughter,  “I didn't know then what I know now, that relationship abuse is a public health epidemic and that young women in Yeardley's age group are at three times greater risk than any other demographic.” In our conversation, Katie shares how she left the world of finance and consulting and  landed a job at the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, eventually advancing to become CEO of the organization. When Katie had doubts about her ability to lead as CEO of the Michael J. Fox Foundation, her path crossed with leadership guru Andy Grove, former CEO of Intel Corporation, who gave her the push she needed to take the role. Katie shares some of the lessons and skills she learned at the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and how her upbringing, faith and desire to help others has put her on the path she was meant to live. This week we continue the abuse mini-series on the Divorce Survival Guide podcast. In this episode, Leslie Morgan Steiner, author of The Naked Truth, returns to the show to join me in a discussion about domestic violence. She is a New York Times best-selling author, a columnist for The Washington Post, a speaker on work/family balance, a successful corporate executive – and domestic violence survivor.  Her book, Crazy Love, is a harrowing memoir about her journey through a severely violent marriage. Together we discuss the complexities of domestic violence and Leslie shares how she ultimately ended her tumultuous marriage and began to heal. Still, to come on the Divorce Survival Guide mini-series on abuse, we’ll explore financial abuse and how to communicate with a high-conflict co-parent. You can sign up for my email list to be notified whenever a new episode is released or subscribe to the podcast on your favorite podcast listening app.  Show Highlights Leslie’s story of domestic violence abuse and how it was a transformational experience. (9:09) The stigma and shame of being an abuse victim is similar to being a sexual assault victim.  (15:07) 85% of abusers are men and some red flags to watch for in potential partners. (16:33) Caution: If you think “I can't help him, but if he gets into therapy, then he'll be okay,” this is true — if he does his own work and his own therapy. The research has shown it can be a decades-long process. (27:47) Domestic violence is a triage situation: help the victims first, but we're never really going to end abuse unless we start focusing on perpetrators getting the counseling that they need. (28:21) Abusive relationships: should you stay or should you go? (30:12) How Leslie reconciled being the victim of a destructive relationship and the champion of relationships themselves as a force for healing. (42:29) Learn More About Leslie: New York Times best-selling author, a columnist for The Washington Post, speaker on work/family balance, successful corporate executive – and domestic violence survivor.  Leslie Morgan Steiner is the author of four nonfiction books: the New York Times bestselling memoir Crazy Love; the critically acclaimed anthology Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families; The Baby Chase: How Surrogacy Is Transforming the American Family; and her latest memoir, The Naked Truth, which explores female sexuality, self-esteem, and dating after 50.  Steiner holds a BA in English from Harvard College. Her first job was writing and editing for Seventeen Magazine. After graduating from Wharton business school in 1992 with an MBA in Marketing, she launched Splenda Brand Sweetener internationally for Johnson & Johnson. She returned to her hometown of Washington, DC in 2001 to become General Manager of the 1.1 million-circulation Washington Post Magazine, a position she held for five years. University lacrosse is renowned for its predominately white, privately educated “rich kid” reputation and over the years, it’s the main sport in university that routinely suffers from damaging scandals. These scandals always grip the media, most likely because everybody involved is young, attractive and privileged. But then in May of 2010, the University of Virginia was thrust into the spotlight after a murder revealed the dark underbelly of the far too frequent college culture of binge drinking, male entitlement and violence. This week we are talking all about sexuality and intimacy after divorce. My guest is Leslie Morgan Steiner, a New York Times best-selling author, columnist for The Washington Post, speaker on work/family balance, successful corporate executive – and domestic violence survivor.  Two truths can co-exist. You can be relieved your soon-to-be ex is moving out and grief-stricken at the same time. You can be happy and sad, at the same. This is part of the complexity of human emotions. There’s nothing wrong with you for experiencing a wide range of them. There is nothing wrong with you.  Nobody knows this better than Leslie. Leslie’s memoir, Crazy Love, is an account of her violently abusive first marriage. It's about this kind of complexity, how we can deeply love and deeply fear one person at the same time. Her latest memoir, The Naked Truth, explores these dualities as well as she writes about female sexuality, self-esteem, and dating after 50.   Show Highlights The power of sisterhood and how women are always an inspiration to other women (3:18) Coming out of a marriage desexualized and losing touch with your sexuality (6:00) Perfection has nothing to do with sexuality (12:00) Getting to a point where you can enjoy and love sex (15:00) The stigma and shame around having sex after divorce if the divorce has not been finalized (22:38) Women who are vulnerable to abusers, how to break the cycle; and Leslie shares her story of domestic abuse (28:14) Why learning how to trust yourself again rather than trusting others is paramount following an abusive relationship (33:23) Leslie drops this truth bomb: “I can’t look for a man to heal me.” (38:00) Men struggle with intimacy just as much as women do (39:00) Leslie shares her thoughts on coaxing a man to fall in love with you (42:00) The myth of Prince Charming is destructive to women and unfair to men too (49:09) Learn More About Leslie: Leslie Morgan Steiner is the author of four nonfiction books: the New York Times bestselling memoir Crazy Love; the critically acclaimed anthology Mommy Wars: Stay-at-Home and Career Moms Face Off on Their Choices, Their Lives, Their Families; The Baby Chase: How Surrogacy is Transforming the American Family; and her latest memoir, The Naked Truth, which explores female sexuality, self-esteem and dating after 50.  From 2006-2008 she wrote over 500 columns for the Washington Post’s popular on-line work/family column, “On Balance.” She currently writes the Two Cents on Modern Motherhood column for ModernMom.com and MommyTracked.com. Her writing has appeared in Glamour, Psychology Today, Redbook, The Washington Post, the New York Times and other publications.    Steiner holds a BA in English from Harvard College. Connecticut State Superior Court Judge Barbara Bellis on Friday granted a motion by Remington Arms to strike the lawsuit by the families of nine children and adults killed and a teacher who survived the Dec. 14, 2012, school attack, in which a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators with a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by Remington. ================================================= Huguely case will move forward after judge denies request for pause After months of waiting for a federal judge in Maryland and hearing nothing, a Charlottesville judge denied a request to pause the wrongful death lawsuit against George Huguely V any longer. Attorneys for Sharon Love — the mother of the woman Huguely is convicted of killing — asked a judge in Charlottesville Circuit Court on Tuesday to once again extend the suspension of the $29.45 million wrongful death lawsuit. Love filed the suit after Huguely was convicted in 2012 of second-degree murder for the slaying of his girlfriend Yeardley Love, a University of Virginia women’s lacrosse player who was found dead in her apartment in May 2010. The now-28-year-old Huguely is currently serving a 23-year sentence at the Augusta Correctional Center for the slaying and has continued to fight his criminal conviction, even after the U.S. Supreme Court in October denied a request to review his case.
