Early on the morning of April 20th, 2012, Gerard Baden-Clay called to report his wife Allison missing. He said she had gone out for a walk and hadn't returned. When the police showed up to take a report, they were immediately put on high alert because of two distinct scratches running down Gerard's cheek, which he claimed to be the result of a shaving accident. Soon, the entire state of Queensland, Australia would be captivated by Allison's story, with countless volunteers joining the search. As details of Gerard's secret life, affairs, and business struggles emerged, suspicion quickly turned to him. But would there be enough evidence for justice to be served?Listen to both parts now, ad-free, on Patreon.Today's snacks: Vegemite toast, Tim Tams, and Violet CrumbleSources:Murray, David. Today we are releasing a re-issue of episode #18, a case I know many of us have been remembering as the search for Samantha Murphy goes on. It was 12 years ago that we first heard the name Allison Baden-Clay.Like Samantha Murphy, we were told that Allison, a successful, vibrant pillar of the community, had disappeared into thin air after going for a walk. Her husband and family had also made tearful plays in front of the media as photos of her attractive, smiling face were circulated. A top lobbying company led by Labor heavyweights Evan Moorhead and David Nelson says it welcomes further regulation of lobbyists in Queensland, including in the role they take in political campaigns. Labor has been accused of again saying one thing to coalmining communities and another to the rest of Australia, as mining giant Adani lashed out over “deeply troubling” mixed messaging on its emissions reduction scheme. More than a dozen Labor MPs including potential ministers in an Albanese government have publicly opposed the government's policy of turning back asylum seeker boats The detective who headed the investigation into Allison Baden-Clay's murder has called for a centralised “go-to point” to battle the increasing scourge of domestic violence in Queensland. It's the early hours of Friday, April 20, 2012, and police are knocking on the door of a blue weatherboard home in Brisbane's west, after reports a mother of three young girls has gone missing. Her husband, Gerard Baden-Clay, answers. He'd called triple zero at 7:15am that morning to tell them he hadn't seen his wife, Allison, since the night before. 'Allison often went for a walk in the morning around 5am,' he told the operator. He assumed that was where she was when he woke up to an empty bed. But it was unusual that she wasn't home yet. 'She was supposed to leave for a seminar in the city around 7am' As he relays his story again to the responding officers, they're quick to notice the scratches on the real estate agent's face. 'A shaving injury,' he tells them. Peering into his home they're taken aback by how clean it is. Like someone has made an effort to tidy up ahead of their arrival. Over the next ten days Gerard's story will be unravelled, exposing a double life with deadly consequences. While officers and local volunteers comb backyards, rivers and streets police will piece together a damning case of what really happened to Allison Baden-Clay. A vigil to honour victims who have died as a result of domestic and family violence is being held in Ipswich tonight. Allison Baden-Clay Foundation chair Vanessa Fowler tells River949's Marnie and Campo it's important people take a stand.
On the morning of Friday, April 20, 2012, Allison Baden-Clay failed to return home from her walk. Her husband notified authorities who soon sprang into action looking for the missing woman. Why so soon? Why did authorities feel that this simply wasn't the case of a missing person? Listen to the story of betrayal, deceit, and an angry caterpillar and decide for yourself.
On April 20th 2012, Gerard Baden-Clay phoned the police at 7.15am in Brisbane, Australia, to report his wife Allison Baden-Clay as missing. The officers arrived at the family home and Gerard opened the door dressed in a suit, tie and cufflinks. His put together outfit did nothing to hide the scratch marks on his right cheek. This episode explores what happened to Allison Baden-Clay and discusses the subsequent investigation and trial that followed the discovery of her body. *******************************************************************************Thank you so much for listening to this episode of Infraction, we value your support more than you know! In the world of violence prevention, strategies focused on bystander intervention have received growing attention. One woman committed to being an active bystander is this week's podcast guest, Vanessa Fowler. Vanessa was a keynote speaker at our annual STOP Domestic Violence Conference a few weeks ago, and the sister of the late Allison Baden-Clay. She is also a wife, mother of two boys and aunt to three beautiful young girls who have tragically lost their mother. Vanessa is a primary school teacher and enjoys educating and shaping young minds. As many of you listeners will be aware, Vanessa and her family were thrust into public attention following the death of Allison, who was murdered at the hands of her husband on 19th April 2012. Vanessa and her parents turned their anger and sadness into something positive by starting a conversation around family and domestic violence. She has been a guiding force in the formation of the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation, taking on the role of a Director and Chairman of the Board. Vanessa is on a journey to educate the community around the signs of domestic violence and teach tactics to become an active and effective bystander. As an educator, it is important to Vanessa to address the underlying attitudes and cultural beliefs that perpetuate gender inequality and socialisation that leads to violence against women and children.
Vanessa Fowler's sister Allison Baden-Clay was murdered by her husband, shattering her family and community. Now she and her family are turning that devastating experience into a force for good, establishing the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation to help people recognise the early signs of domestic and family abuse. The goal is to eradicate what is often described as Australia's pandemic. Vanessa is joined by JLL's head of human resources, Nicole Zipf, who explains the role of the workplace in stamping out domestic violence. Lydia King, a property management specialist, who leads JLL's agenda in gender issues as part of its diversity and inclusion programme, moderates the discussion.
Allison was born on the 1st July 1968 and was a loving mother to three daughters. She lived in Brisbane Australia, and on the 20th April 2012 her husband woke up at 6am to find she was not at home. On the 20th April 2012 Gerard Robert Baden-Clay reported to police that his wife Allison was missing. Ten days later her body was found underneath a bridge on the bank of a creek about 14 kilometres from her home.
Phil sits down with Vanessa Fowler, chair of The Allison Baden-Clay Foundation, activist and sister of the late Allison Baden-Clay. Allison's tragedy was one that gripped the nation - and although six years have passed, one woman a week is still being murdered by her current or former partner. Phil and Vanessa have a really important discussion on the prevalence of domestic and family violence in our society, how to pick warning signs early on, and the way we need to change our attitude when it comes to "minding your own business". In Part Two of our investigation into the murder of Allison Baden-Clay, ya girls discuss the absolute gall of a man who so obviously killed his wife to appeal that decision in the first place, the absolute legend that is Bevan Slattery, and we get a little serious to discuss domestic violence and the impact this case has had on Australia’s slow but steady change in the way we understand domestic and family violence.Gerard Baden-Clay was found guilty of Allison’s murder, but you know what they say: you can never keep a good Scout down. Or a very, very bad one.People were horrified when Gerard successfully appealed his murder conviction. Manslaughter didn’t seem to really apply to a guy who hid his wife’s body in a creek bed and then lied about it for two years. The people weren’t satisfied with the resolution, and they let their voiced be heard. Thousands gathered for a protest in Allison’s honour, a petition garnered tens of thousands of signatures, and the message went all the way up to future Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who, in a move that should have been an indication of his tenure of PM, did absolutely nothing. This episode is dedicated to Allison Baden-Clay and all the victims of domestic violence who have had their lives taken away. We hope that by keeping the conversation going, we can educate and inform others so that what happened to Allison never happens again.Sources:The bulk of the information for this episode was taken from David Murray’s outstandingly excellent book, The Murder of Allison Baden-Clay, a fantastic addition into anyone’s true crime library. The Courier-Mail archives have a huge range of articles written by David Murray and other journalists which can be accessed here http://www.couriermail.com.au/?s=allison+baden-clay if you have a Courier-Mail subscription. The judgement from Gerard’s appeal can be found here https://www.sclqld.org.au/caselaw/QCA/2015/265You can donate to the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation here https://www.allisonbadenclayfoundation.org.au/donate/Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.com
On April 20, 2012, Gerard Baden-Clay phoned the police. His wife hadn’t come home from her morning walk, you see, and it wasn’t like her to be late. She had a big day ahead, and he didn’t want to cause a fuss, but he was getting worried. When the police arrived at the Baden-Clay household in Brookfield in Brisbane’s west, Gerard greeted the officers, gesturing apologetically at his face. “Cut myself shaving,” he said. He needn’t have pointed it out. Officers immediately noticed the long, ragged scratches on the side of Gerard’s face. And they knew they weren’t from shaving. The investigation into Allison’s disappearance would become one of the largest in Brisbane’s history, in man hours and in media coverage. The people demanded to know what happened to Allison, a much-loved mother, friend, and member of the community. People who had never met her joined a crowd of hundreds at the Brookfield Showgrounds to volunteer their time to search for Allison.
