Not a lot was spoken about victims of abuse dealing with PTSD as it is today. There were issues in our community with couples experiencing abuse in the home due to trauma experienced by the men who served during the war. As told by my parents, and the other adults in my community, young men were taken from high school and taken to the war zone to participate in the war. From 2009-2013, Child Protective Services agencies substantiated, or found strong evidence to indicate that, 63,000 children a year were victims of sexual abuse. A majority of child victims are 12-17. Of victims under the age of 18: 34% of victims of sexual assault and rape are under age 12, and 66% of victims of sexual assault and rape are age 12-17. Meanwhile, only 5 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison. Every day, hundreds of Americans are affected by sexual violence. Transitions - Dealing With Loneliness

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2021 13:09

This is the last installment of the Transitions series. Survivors of abuse have a hard time letting go of feelings just like everyone else. This is why in a previous episode I stated that the first 90 days are very crucial. Just because it was necessary to end the relationship and the survivor is now in a safe place does not mean their feelings for the one they left has ended. It takes time. And the longer a survivor has been with that person, the harder it is to heal. Love is not something you can turn off or on like a light switch. It is a matter of a growth and maturity which requires patience. Getting over that person involves the same thing. This time instead of having patience towards the other person you are in a relationship with, it is important that the survivor understands it is time to redirect that patience towards themselves. And to best support them, supporters – survivors need a lot of patience from you. For those of you who are survivors, Granny wants to say – YOU GOT THIS! You are embarking on a new journey now so be proud of yourself. Yes it feels like hell because you still love them, but that’s ok. That just confirms you’re still human. What is not ok, is you still being in a space where they or anyone else can harm you in any shape or form. The questions for this episode seem to be more about triggers, and they are pertaining to the work I do outside the podcast. For those who do not know, I am a Restoration Strategist supporting victims and survivors of abuse as they transition from toxic relationships. I also share resources with their supporters (friends, family, or coworkers) with resources to help them transition successfully. Just so you know, the website is being updated and will have new services released in Quarter 2. The tentative date is April 1, but I will keep you updated on the actual date of release. One of the many, many, many things a survivor of abuse deals with is fear. Not knowing if their abuser will track them down and harm them again; if they will threaten to harm their family members; stop their flow of money by causing them to lose their job/business; steal the children away if there are any involved; sending others to taunt them for leaving – these are the things survivors either deal with or are in fear of happening once they have left the toxic situation. Today, I am using this episode to speak to the survivor and the supporter to help them get from fearful to fearless.
