First, comes tragedy, right out of the blue, walloping our hearts, minds & bodies, sending our lives reeling with typically no warning. It could be a terrible car accident, or something that hits us square in the emotions, like being subjected to or even just witnessing cruelties. When we are victims of tragedy, trauma ensues. To be more specific, trauma can be defined as a response that results from exposure to an incident or a series of events that are so emotionally disturbing or perceived to be so life-threatening that it has lasting effects on one's mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual balance.  In other words, something happens that threatens the very fabric of our lives, and we then get to deal with the very understandable emotional fall-out, potentially for the rest of our lives. We know this is heavy stuff, but considering that over 2/3 of our population has experienced a traumatic event at one point in their lives, and over 8 million people in the US alone suffer from PTSD, we feel the need to talk about it. And not just talk about what it is and how it can affect us, but also to share some techniques and strategies for dealing with trauma that have been scientifically researched and proven to be effective. We have to remind our listeners that we are not therapists, we are not licensed health professionals in any sense. We are just two more people who have survived traumas, had some pretty intense life experiences and are fortunate to be alive and well enough to speak of it.  We speak of it from personal experience not from clinical expertise, and we urge you to not take anything we say in this podcast as legal or medical advice, but rather as personal observations.   Sharing is the first step to healing, but if you or a loved one are suffering the effects of trauma, we strongly encourage you to seek out real qualified help, from a professional who will understand your needs and provide you with the tools & guidance to work on healing all of those unseen wounds.  And if this episode gives you a better idea of what it is you're going through and why, and that there is hope for healing with an array of techniques, then we will consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to help someone.  To that end, we have included a wealth of resources in the notes of this episode; from books and videos to celebrated practitioners, we urge you to check out the links and begin to map your path to healing. Ok, so there are many kinds of trauma that can occur. Ranging from some kind of accident, to natural catastrophes, to being subjected to interpersonal violence. It can be a one-time event (like an accident), a prolonged event (such as war), or a series of events ( like being subjected to long-term abuse).  Trauma that affects a community or a country is called collective trauma, and being close to someone who has been traumatized can cause it's own trauma, called secondary trauma. It's all very real and as you have probably seen in your own lives it can have incredibly long lasting consequences, sometimes generational.  In fact, so much of our human history can be defined as a litany of inherited generational trauma.   However, since there are so very permutations of trauma, and this is a podcast focused primarily on relationship health, we are going to narrow our focus to what happens when traumatic experiences threaten our romantic relationships, and what we can do to strengthen our connections & heal from the pain we've experienced. In relationships, there are two 2 categories of trauma that will most commonly affect us; life trauma and unhealed relationship trauma. Life trauma refers to those out-of-the-blue occurrences, whereas unhealed relationship trauma refers to when we have not yet fully processed and moved on from trauma occurring within a relationship, often a previous one. So what are the ways we can be affected by these different kinds of traumas? (How does it affect us?) * physically drained from constant stress responses     * fight/flight/freeze response is an automatic state now     * toxic relationships are stressful for mind & body alike     * constant stress can cause inflammation, heart attack, chronic pain, arthritis, weakened immune system * dissociation: disconnected from the world or your life     * head-in-the-clouds, non-presence     * feeling your life is a movie you're watching on a screen (simulation)     * disrupted perception memory processing & emotions     * like the traumatic event is still happening. * mental exhaustion at a chemical level     * adrenaline & cortisol are supposed to be short-term     * chemical overload:  can't concentrate, can't remember, can't sort out feelings     * frustration can be a constant * trust problems     * doubting people, even ones you know & love     * walls, non-belief, paranoia, doubting people's motives * risk junkie, taking chances to evade the bad feels     * sensations (rush) you can finally feel     * self-destructive rushed like sex & drug addiction     * any way to clear your mind of the nagging problems you can't address * a constant feeling of shame     * GUILT: feel bad about something you did     * SHAME: feel bad about who or what you are     * much self-blame about things not working out better     * living in regret & “if only” thoughts     * guilt/shame overload can worsen physical/psych effects of trauma * physical reaction to emotional triggers     * trauma “nostalgia”     * some small stimulus bring an outsized reaction     * amygdala produces neurotransmitter Acetylcholine      * shortness breath, sweating, anxiety, sickness when smell, shaking in a topic of conversation, nervous convulsing     * potential for violence * risk overeating, overproduction of adrenaline, anxiety etc can be further risk factors that make matters worse How does it affect those around us? * it can be generational,      * meaning the effects of trauma can be passed on from parents, grandparents, etc, through dysfunctional interactions & training children to view life through a lens that the world around them is not safe and may never be safe. * potential substance abuse & other abuses can cause havoc in family, work, friends * partner can experience secondary trauma     * also known as vicarious trauma      * experience many of the same effects as the person who was injured: fear, exhaustion, helplessness, hopelessness, anger, anxiety, etc. * it can generate its own ptsd * untreated ptsd, the effects get worse over time How can we process & manage it? There are two schools of thought about trauma;   1) it can be cured (removed)  2) it cannot be cured, only treated & the mind/body rewired to circumvent it. The key is to find something that allow the sense of deceptiveness & self-loathing to be controlled * notice the incongruence between the stimulus (situation) & the response (your whack-ass flipout) * Always remember that healing doesn't work in a straight line * be kind to yourself.  healing, self-love, self compassion, patience * try a therapy like EMDR (eye movement desensitization & reprocessing)     * patient recalls traumatic event, therapist makes them follow fingers with eyes     * seems like b.s. but the results speak for themselves     * changes the brain circuitry to interpret your currently reality from different POV     * allows people to let go of long-ago events, no longer in the now * try things like Yoga     * deepen your mind-body connection, raise awareness     * greater relationship with your internal sensory system     * allows us to minimize the focus on our round and round thought process, while feeling more connected to what our bodies are actually feeling. and if our body feels safe in the moment, that can help train our brains to be less “on guard”.     * According to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk it's proven more effective for ptsd than any of the studied drugs (prozac, zoloft, many others) * try things like Theater & Movement     * playing different roles in your body can help your relationship to yourself     * “playback theater” is a movement that uses this premise     * but all theater can be ecstatic and cathartic         * We did the John Gilkey “Idiot Workshop”, where he pushed us to dig deeper for expressions of ourselves we typically aren't comfortable portraying. I had a breakthrough when I burst out that I didn't want to be “cute” any more. After letting that sit with me for a few days & weeks, I realized that I had been filling a de facto “cute” role all my life, largely due to how it helped keep me safe. But now that I'm stronger & more confident, I don't need to keep that as my primary identity. There are so many facets to who I am, and I no longer need to limit myself to what used to keep me safe.     * Aristotle argued that tragedy cleansed the heart through pity and terror, purging us of our petty concerns and worries by making us aware that there can be nobility in suffering. He called this experience 'catharsis'. * try things like Neural Feedback (no really!)      * electrical/photon impulses into the brain can be like a neurochemical hard-reset     * shaping the brain to have a different configuration, open to new input * try things like Psychedelic therapy (guided MDMA sessions for trauma)     * legal grey area     * gaining traction     * gotta be legit, psych-guided, not just trippin' at a friend's house     * (ok maybe there's some benefit to the friend's house trip but come on)     * a meta-view can be achieved, a removal from the traumatic experience     *     * (we have friends)     *  BOTTOM LINE: DIFFERENT PEOPLE REQUIRE DIFFERENT APPROACHES. If you are working through trauma, you may find yourself drawn to one of these methods, or you might benefit from incorporating several of them. And it can change, both as you make progress and also as you move through different phases of your life. the main goal is to recognize what you're struggling with, accept that needing help is nothing to be ashamed of, and start finding ways to heal your wounds. Speaking of healing wounds, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mark Cunningham, a military veteran and therapist based in Fort Collins CO. We will be sharing the full interview with you all later in the season, but we wanted to do a public service announcement in this episode because Mark is helping to promote a documentary called “Love After War”, produced & directed by sexologist Dr. Mitchell Tepper. “Love After War” introduces the viewer to veterans and their partners who have had to fight the battle to save their relationships after suffering catastrophic injuries dealt in combat. It's heart-wrenching, candid, and inspiring, so we hope you get a chance to support the film. Mark is hosting a special screening at Colorado State University on March 29, 2022. If you're listening to the podcast right after it came out, that means you have two weeks to make plans! And if you aren't able to pop over to Fort Collins the day of, you can sign up to get notifications of screenings in your area, or even sign up to host one yourself!  The website is loveafterwar.org, and we'll leave a link directly in the description. With a blend of psychedelia, pop, folk, jangle, indie, shoegaze and rock & roll, RAT!Hammock have assembled and curated a sound that is irresistible and wholly endearing. It's made them a lot of friends and fans along the way, which is always a plus - but this band, like most their age, started out with no loftier ambitions in mind. They're suburban kids, ranging from aspiring metalheads to baby Elvis impersonators. How exactly did they all end up in Brisbane, on a co-headlining tour with Horror My Friend and sold-out signs on the door? It's a long story. A fun one, too. Julia R. Anderson: Live at The Bearded Lady, West End, 10th May 2019 Born in the southern deserts of Israel, Julia R. Anderson's family moved to Australia when she was a toddler, settling in Bundaberg. As a teenager she began experimenting with sampling and songwriting, picking up the guitar during a return stay in Israel. Ultimately moving to Brisbane to study music, Anderson has since established herself as a prolific performer and a consistently inventive force within the local music community. This set is quite unusual, even by Anderson's adventurous musical standards. In mid-2019, she scored a support slot at the Brisbane stop on Laura Imbruglia's east coast album tour. Because regular drummer Andrew van der Horst was in Japan at the time, Anderson performed a special drumless trio show with Imogen Kowalczyk on bass and Reece Dargie on guitar. The result is a unique showcase of the intricate nature of her music, held together with no backbeat, just an invisible spiderweb of pure vibes. A viberweb, if you will. Ballarat alt/progressive metal prodigies Ebonivory are one of the new wave of bands that has it's eclectic nature as it's core ingredient.Their mixture of alternative rock, progressive metal, post-hardcore and modern punk all under one banner is an unusual combination but one which blends seemlessly into a fresh sound that has seen them build a strong following."It's interesting," laughed frontman Charlie Powlett when pressed on Ebonivory's unique sound. "Its sort of just how I write music from all of my influences and growing up with a lot of radio rock and Australian rock, like Powderfinger and Grinspoon and then later on finding progressive rock and progressive metal then channelling it all into this one unified sound."After spending the early parts of this year touring the country as a support act, Ebonivory is preparing to embark on their maiden headlining tour to promote upcoming songle 'Tales of Termina', with Powlett admitting the closer it gets to fruition the more real it becomes."Its a mixed bag," he said "We were really nervous but now that it is getting closer we are getting more pumped. We're really excited to be getting out there and play more shows."After opening for Dead Letter Circus and Circles, Powlett admits that the step up in responsibility to a headlining performance is significant. "This time a lot of the pressure is on us to give it all we've got," he conceeded. "When you're playing under such huge acts you can get in the mindset that the show is about them but this time all eyes are on us."In the full interview Charlie talks about learning from more experienced bands on the road, their recent performance at Wallapalooza, how important smaller, more localised festivals are to Australian bands and music, new song 'Tales of Termina', his early vision for the band, their next release, future plans and more.’TALES OF TERMINA’ AUSTRALIAN TOURSaturday, September 14: Wallapalooza, Mudgeeraba (Gold Coast)Saturday, October 5: Black Bear Lodge, Brisbanewith Sum Of Us, Motions & Patient Lounge Friday, October 11: Crown & Anchor, Adelaidewith Heartline & Jack BolingbrokeSaturday, October 12: The Workers Club, Melbournewith Special Guests, The Last Martyr, Vatic & In VanityFriday, October 18: The Factory Floor, Sydneywith setmeonfire, Reliqa & Infinite Illusion Tickets from wildthingpresents.com/tickets

CNT EVEN: CNT EVN are a relatively new band but their fresh sound and busy playing schedule has seen them become a formidable band about town, pulling crowds and fans along for the ride. CNT EVN released a debut EP called ‘Demo’ in September 2018 and with four tracks to it, it’s a damn enjoyable listen. They take their intensity to the stage and are comprised of Gemma Wyer on the Drums, Rita Braby hitting the Bass, Anthony Gray on the Guitar and fronted by Rae Hatch on Vocal and Keys. CNT EVN really bring something different to the table and it’s super exciting to hear. It has classic punk sounding structures with energetic fast paced riffs, big thumping bass, crashing drums and howling vocals but there is also the added synth factor which makes CNT EVN carve their own path and sound. They are snagging numerous support slots, building from strength to strength and even are facebook official as of February of 2019. Enough of the talk and more of the walk, recorded live at the Black Bear Lodge on the 1st of March 2019. Dumb Things: Dumb Things have been around for a couple of years and they produce some of the finest laid back indie rock that suits a balcony in Brisbane with the sun setting, cold drink in hand just before the aeroguard gets whipped out. They have so far released one album called Dumb Things and it truly is an extremely enjoyable listen. It has those jangly guitar parts that immediately give you that sense of ease and they do such an effective job of writing a melody that buries into your subconscious that you end up singing their songs all week. The group is comprised of Adam Vincent, James Southey, Madeleine Keinonen, Andrew Robinson and Patrick Hill. This particular recording was at their LP launch after their record received a vinyl release via Bobo Integral. Recorded live at The Foundry on the 28th of February 2019.

Electric Zebra: Electric Zebra are a band that formed in the Gold Coast out of a couple of high school friends and a drummer they found on gumtree. After forming in 2014, the four-piece of Keelan, Daniel, Adam and Kesh have played consistently around Brisbane and Australia harnessing their energetic riffs and heavy drum stylings. They have released two EPs 2016’s ‘Ambition’ and followed up with 2018’s ‘You’re Sinking’. They play with a high intensity with guitars turned up to the max, a pulsating rhythm section and a compelling vocal style. They are guaranteed to get your head moving and can build up into an almighty head bang within a few chords. Turn the stereo up and get stuck into this set, recorded live at The Black Bear Lodge on the 19th of July 2018. Pool Shop: Pool Shop is a creative project from Brisbane musician Jamiee Fryer from the brilliant band Major Leagues. In this outfit Jamiee turns the dream pop to another level delivering a fantastic sound that is upbeat, even when it delivers heavy lyricism on some of life's biggest internal struggles. The sound has the lighter side of the shoegaze vibe with her vocals floating high above the music as it caresses you to a dreamier state. The synths then deliver a powerful push to the sound, taking it to that next level of pop infusion which compels you to move to the music. It’s music that you can really sink into and then just drift away. Jamiee recruited some of the best to accompany her in delivering these tracks such as Vlada Edirippulige (Major Leagues), Luke Pallier, Peter Bernoth (Holiday Party) and Dougal Morrison (Blonde Tongues). In this month March 2019 a new Pool Shop song was released ‘Shooting Star’, the first with the whole band involved in the recording process. It’s very exciting times for this group and there is a lot to look forward to. Listen in to this amazing set, recorded live at BigSOUND on the 5th of September 2018 at the Black Bear Lodge.

Spiral Stairs: Spiral Stairs aka Scott Kannberg first began making music with co founding member Stephen Malkamus in the legendary 90’s act Pavement. After Pavement disbanded in 1999, Kannberg formed Preston School Of Industry, who went on to release two albums through Matador Records; 2001’s All This Sounds Gas and 2004’s Monsoon. 5 years passed before Kannberg re-emerged with his first solo effort The Real Feel, which was also released through Matador. He then relocated to the northern Brisbane suburb of Beachmere for a few years, before slowly beginning work on the follow up. 2017 saw the release of Doris And The Daggers, Kannberg’s most personal and emotional music to date. Alongside the album was a bonus Australian only 7“ entitled Pig City accompanied with the B-Side Vultures Of Caboolture, which are a homage to his time spent in Brisbane. Pig City, a song title shared by Queensland band The Parameters, was inspired by the Andrew Stafford book about Brisbane music during the police corruption era as well as the influential sounds of The Go-Betweens. Superstar: Superstar is the duo of Keiran Hegarty and Esther Edquist, who have been playing under the name since 2007. After a string of tapes they released their debut record, A Toast To…, in 2013 on Bedroom Suck Records and it’s been one of the quieter hits on that label. In 2015 they’ll release their keenly anticipated second LP, Table For Tow which if this performance is anything to go by will sound even more luxurious than their first offering. Recorded & mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at Black Bear Lodge, Brisbane. 19th October 2014. Mark Zian: You may know of him from one of his several monikers such as: I am Not A Nihilist, Scruples and Curlew. He was also the bassist for Brisbane band Knee Chin. Mark’s distinctive humour and his often pessimistic outlook on the mundane rat race of everyday life runs throughout his work, injecting his songs with a distinct personality. Ela Stiles: You might know Ela Stiles from some of the bands she’s played in over the last couple of years: Songs and Bushwalking. It was that band Songs which she began with Max Doyle that saw he focus shift from modelling to music. With Karl Scullin (Kes Band, Mum Smokes) and Nisa Venerosa (Fabulous Diamonds) there is Bushwalking, a psych three-piece that she originally formed to work on her solo songs. It turned out to be more of a band than a solo project and they released their second LP ‘ No Enter’ in September last year. Now it’s 2014, it’s time for something new and completely different. Ela’s debut record boasts a completely acapella B-side, which takes a lot of guts. Recorded by Josh Watson & Mino Peric. Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Brightside, Apr 4 2014. Tight Slip: Tight Slip were a band active in the Brisbane underground rock scene around 2011-2013. They spun-off from another group called ‘Loose Grip’ a band which consists of the members of Tight Slip plus one Sam McCabe. Both groups were the brain-child of Kieren Lavering and while Loose Grip had a 7” on Bedroom Suck Record, Tight Slip regrettably have nothing to show for their short run bar a few live recordings on vimeo. There’s still time for this power pop powerhouse to make a comeback. Maybe this will motivate them. Recorded & mixed by Andrew McLellan. Recorded at Black Bear Lodge, Aug 24 2012. Beaches: Beaches are an exceptional band – both on record and on stage, so it’s with some pleasure that we bring you an extract from their recent east coast tour of Australia in support of their killer 2013 record ‘She Beats’ that came out through Chapter Music. Mixing in the pysch of the 1970s with elements of shoegaze and straight up rock and roll seeping through, this quintet have been quietly building up a worldwide following over the past half a decade. Expect a dervish of musical escapades. This live recording comes from the band’s visit to Brisbane back in about June 2013 when they played at the Black Bear Lodge. Barbiturates: Barbiturates are Roland Hlavka and Elliot D’arcy, two musicians known for their work in Brisbane psych outfit Cobbwebbs. This particular project emerged from eclectic rehearsal room jams that didn’t quite fit the CV of their former band – and thus the side project was born! Still channeling their DIY roots, Barbiturates sway between pop and psych, adding in generous additions of almost trip-hop sounding beats. They’ve release a bunch of music, but 2013’s Shades was the first actually put out in some kind of material form. Recorded by Murray Paas Mixed by Josh Watson. Recorded at The Zoo, July 2013.
