Please subscribe now for as little as 5$ and gain access to a community of over 700 awesome, curious, kind, funny, brilliant, generous souls Dr. Deborah Adamy has been committed to her meaningful 38 year career in advocacy,  healing and activism. She has advocated for the rights of the most vulnerable, counseled people from all walks of life, developed curriculum, trained social workers and educators, coordinated research projects, ran groups and facilitated workshops. She cares deeply for humanity and believes we are capable of reducing our daily suffering, finding deeper meaning and purpose in our lives, and living more fully into our potential. Listen to Deborah Podcast   PHILOSOPHY Deborah is a holistic psycho-spiritual therapist, who encourages her clients to live from love rather than fear, be guided by their intuitive inner wisdom, and integrate trust, compassion, and empowerment into their daily lives. When she began her private therapeutic practice over 30 years ago, Deborah was compelled to incorporate a holistic approach, understanding that the integration of body-mind-spirit enriches our health and well-being.  She embodies this belief by caring wisely for her body, mind, and spirit. Deborah values and brings consciousness to nutrition, physical exercise and vitality, a thirst for knowledge and wisdom, and her ever-growing spiritual practices.  EDUCATION Deborah completed her doctorate in clinical psychology from The California Institute of Human Sciences in Encinitas, CA; received her masters degree from Hunter College School of Social Work in NYC; graduated Magna Cum Lade with a BA in Psychology and Teaching Certification in elementary and special education from College of New Rochelle, NY; and earned her LMT at The Swedish Institute of Massage Therapy in NYC, having studied eastern and western massage modalities. She is also an ordained minister in the Universal Life Church. PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND From high school through the early years following college, Deborah taught modern and jazz dance to children, teens and adults. People would question how she could have two seemingly distinct jobs: dance teacher and social worker. For Deborah there was not such a disconnect, whether teaching dance or teaching communication skills, both helped people believe in themselves and build confidence. Deborah began her social work career in the early 80s empowering minority women to enter the work force with confidence, assertiveness and effective job skills. She worked in school-based drug prevention programs, counseling teenagers and families and later running parenting workshops throughout Brooklyn and Queens, NY.  She was a consultant for numerous organizations providing presentations, trainings, staff development workshops, retreats, clinical case conferences, curriculum development, professional development and strategic planning for counselors, educators, social workers, and policy makers. In addition, Deborah worked at a community-based health center, integrating medical and educational services for the most vulnerable. She was hired by Yale University's Consultation Center to direct innovative, comprehensive programs in high-risk middles schools (healthy decision-making curriculum, peer leadership, peer mediation, parent support groups and community organizing collaboration). Deborah coordinated a federally funded research project through Hunter College School of Social Work (HCSSW), focused on effective child welfare practices. Following that research project, she became the Director of Training at HCSSW's National Resource Center for Permanency Planning, helping to improve policy and practices in child welfare throughout the country. Deborah has developed a thriving private practice in Psychotherapy working with children, teenagers, and adults, individuals, couples and families for over 30 years. Over a decade ago, Deborah did an internship with Hospice, where she discovered her natural comfort with the dying process. That comfort and humility led to being invited into the dying process of friends and relatives. Her first experience of being present as a dear friend passed allowed her to feel like a mid-wife to death. She experienced the sacredness of ushering someone to let go of what they previously anguished over, forgiving others as well as themselves, and releasing fear as the dying person softened into acceptance and peace. She is grateful for the wisdom, compassion and guidance she found in "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" for not only sitting at the bedside of the dying, but being inspired to write and deliver meaningful eulogies. As an ordained inter-faith minister, Reverend Dr. Mama A feels honored and privileged to officiate weddings. She marvels at the invitation into the vulnerability, intimacy and dreams of couples, while helping them create sacred ceremonies to profess their love. Rev. Dr. Mama A thoughtfully delivers unique, personally relevant, heartfelt sermons, while delighting in these celebrations of love.   The Stand Up Community Chat is always active with other Stand Up Subscribers on the Discord Platform.   Be sure to visit https://www.patreon.com/PeteDominick/membership and scroll down where you should see a "Connect to Discord" button. Treatment for schizophrenia is a tough journey for people with the illness but also for caregivers and loved ones. Due to cognitive symptoms, hallucinations, and delusions, a person with schizophrenia may not be able to make decisions on treatment or take care of themselves. When should caregivers step in to legally take control over a person with schizophrenia? What are the types of involuntary treatment? What are the other options available to people with schizophrenia and caregivers? Host Rachel Star Withers, a person with schizophrenia, and co-host Gabe Howard discuss involuntary treatment options in schizophrenia and the moral issues around forcing treatment on a person.  Guest Nicole Drapeau Gillen joins the discussion. Nicole was an IT executive and chief marketing officer turned caregiver and the author of “Schizophrenia & Related Disorders: A Handbook for Caregivers.” Nicole recognized that caregivers like herself often find themselves thrust into this challenging, complex, and stressful situation with little guidance on how to help a loved one with a serious mental illness. In this episode, Rachel speaks about psychiatric advance directives. You can find more information at the National Resource Center on Psychiatric Advance Directives at www.NRC-PAD.org. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest, Nicole Drapeau Gillen, is a caregiver and the author of “Schizophrenia & Related Disorders: A Handbook for Caregivers.” Nicole began her journey as a caregiver in this world of schizophrenia in 2020 when her daughter became sick. After thrashing about for a few years, finding herself frustrated and desperate for information, she wrote the book on caregiving for someone with a serious mental illness. In her book, “Schizophrenia & Related Disorders: A Handbook for Caregivers,” Nicole addresses a myriad of issues caregivers face, including: • From the Beginning of the Journey: Treatment — medication primer, treatment primer, etc.; hospitals, case managers, and more; and doctors (working with, talking to, finding) • Ongoing: Communication, definitions, family and friends; support groups — for yourself and your loved one; and creating your ongoing paper trail • Could Happen Anytime: Housing/homelessness; navigating jail and police; and crisis — suicidal ideation, arrests, run away, etc. • Getting The Right Support Setup: Legal — advanced directives; legal — power of attorney, conservatorship, guardianship; and financial — SSI, SSDI, other government services • Long-term issues: Budgeting — estate planning, trusts and letter of intent; and transition to self support for your loved one • And so much more! As a caregiver, our journey is ever-evolving and fluid. No sooner do we get our loved one on a good path, then things take another twist and turn. This book aims to give you the fundamentals on how to help your loved one no matter where they are on their road to recovery. With clear steps and compassionate insights, you'll find a lifeline in your caregiving journey. https://schizophrenia-caregiver.com/ Schizophrenia & Related Disorders: A Handbook for Caregivers Rachel Star Withers creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage and let others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. In the fight for survivor justice, for racial justice, we are asked to:Heal from violence and oppression.Hold space for survivors.Center those with the highest burden of violence. We are asked to embrace how other cultures have fostered beloved communities, to reject the systems and beliefs that do not serve us and to pause to consider what's working… and what isn't. As we close the 2023 Domestic Violence Awareness Month and look forward to this upcoming year, PreventConnect sat down with Jacqueline Miller, from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, to talk about the importance of pausing, especially after months like DVAM, and centering in ourselves and our mission to advance racial equity and foster communities free from violence. This conversation is a bonus track from an instagram live conversation we had earlier this month. Discussion Questions to take this conversation further in your organizations and communities: In what ways does your organization or community put into action that there can't be survivor justice without racial justice? Reproductive Freedom in the Deep South: Introduction to the Series

This is our kick-off episode introducing audiences to the six-part series where we will host conversations with a range of people and professionals who are experiencing first-hand the effects and the fallout of the Dobbs decision here in Alabama. In June of 2022, the constitutional right to access abortion care in the US was revoked when the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade, which had been the law of the land for 50 years. On that same day, this judgment—which we'll refer to as “Dobbs”—triggered a state-wide ban on abortion here in Alabama. Ours is among the most extreme bans in the country, with NO exceptions for rape or incest. And while abortion is most talked about, this is not a single-issue struggle. Here is what the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence has to say about the movement for reproductive justice: “This intersectional paradigm at the core of reproductive justice acknowledges that systems of oppression simultaneously discriminate based on race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, age, immigration status, language, and other factors. These intersecting forms of oppression and discrimination have historically resulted in power, privilege, and resources for a select few and limited access to power and resources for a large majority, including women of color, women in poverty, women as an overall group, and others. Reproductive justice aims to bring about the complete physical, mental, spiritual, political, social and economic well-being of women and girls, based on the full achievement and protection of not only women's reproductive rights, but their human rights” ( VAWnet). This series is riding on a wave that is already building and growing strong in Alabama. In this introduction, members of the FemmsAct team talk about what they have been doing this last year to build an activist wing of our book club community. We also layout the framework for our series, and discuss the multitude of ways reproductive justice touches our lives. We talk about the data, which already shows that in states with the most extreme bans, women experience the highest mortality rates, teenage pregnancy, economic inequality, poverty, incarceration, and poor healthcare. As these stories unfold, we will build undeniable evidence that reproductive autonomy is central to our liberation. Our mission is to keep this conversation in the public, free of shame and fear. This is just the beginning... *A couple of quick disclaimers: The studies and statistics we'll be referencing in these episodes do use gendered language. Stalking is a pattern of behavior directed at a specific person that causes a reasonable person to fear for their safety or the safety of others. And each year, over 13 million people experience it in various ways - being followed, receiving unwanted communications or gifts, through social media, and more. And when the stalker is a former intimate partner, post-separation abuse can materialize as stalking. Rachel Gibson of the National Center for Victims of Crime leads us through the realities of stalking, its prevalence, how it manifests, how it impacts victims, how technology is weaponized by stalkers, and the steps we can take to counter these unwanted behaviors. Rachel Gibson is the Director of the Center for Victim Service Professionals at the National Center for Victims of Crime, where she works to further the mission by supporting and overseeing NCVC's programs for victim service professionals, providing training and technical assistance. She also is the founder of RG Williams Consulting designed to engage and support domestic violence programs and national and international gender-based agencies and non-profits that support staff of color and communities at the margins. Ms. Gibson was formerly a Senior Technology Safety Specialist on the Safety Net Team at the National Network to End Domestic Violence where she worked to increase the safety and privacy of survivors and victims of crime. There, she developed training and technical assistance and provided expert thought leadership to build the capacity of victim service providers, private industries, lawmakers, and communities at large to provide advocacy and support to survivors in this digital society. Prior to NNEDV, Ms. Gibson also worked at the National Resource Center on Reaching Victims through the Vera Institute of Justice, and at the former Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence as the Technology Safety Program Specialist.

Arlene Vassel of the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence reflects on the primary prevention inherent in Black families and communities that gets overlooked because of assumptions and biases, and calls on us to examine how we define primary prevention. She calls on us to listen to the stories Black families and survivors share about times when they felt safe and pay attention to the things that helped them thrive in those times. Implementing prevention strategies without the participation of Black families, survivors, or advocates will render them ineffective because those most directly impacted will have the best insights on what solutions will work. To succeed, prevention work needs to take leadership from communities and build strong connections across social justice movements. Vassel challenges us to get creative with our funding and use our imagination to BE the work in resisting anti-Blackness. As we continue to bear witness to the pandemic of racial injustice, systemic oppression and political and personal attacks on our marginalized communities, joy and resiliency feel like precious resources existing between a juxtaposition of both deeply needed and difficult to find. This year, leaders in the movement to end gender-based violence, the National Resource Center for Domestic Violence, along with their partners at the Domestic Violence Awareness Project Advisory Group are centering again on their commitment to No Survivor Justice without Racial Justice for the 2022 National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and beyond. For this episode of PreventConnect, we sat down with two of the organizers for DVAM 20-22 and beyond: two fierce women of color who are leading the movement and their communities, and asked them why joy is so central to their work to end systemic oppression. We're also bringing in the voices of leaders of color across this movement. Highlighting key speakers, themes and excerpts from the 42nd annual Day of Unity, which kicked off DVAM in early October, when the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence invited survivors, advocates and leaders to share their own stories about collective liberation. They shared perspective on how communities of color have found joy through unrelenting resiliency, how they cultivate joy in their own lives and how organizations can get on board in uplifting joy and valuing their staff.Podcast Guests:Ivonne Ortiz, Director of Training and TA, NRCDV, National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, she/ellaNnenna Minimah, Owner/Lead Consultant, Mission Avisee, LLC, she/herhttps://www.instagram.com/missionavisee/Call for Unity Speakers:Jacqueline MillerSecretary January ContrerasFaranza SafiullahVivien HuelgoShawnice StratfordResources:https://www.dvawareness.org/DVAM-2022https://vawnet.org/https://www.nrcdv.org/

Today's episode of Down The Rabbit Hole is about the intersection between traumatic brain injury (TBI) in people who have experienced domestic abuse, and an invaluable healing modality called neurofeedback. Please note that this episode carries a trigger warning for domestic violence. Joining us we have two experts who are widely experienced in the field of helping survivors heal: Josh Brown from Fort Bend Women's Center and Abeer Monem from the Harris Country Domestic Violence Coordinating Council. We start by learning that neurofeedback (also known as neurotherapy) teaches self-control of brain functions to develop healthier emotional patterns, before diving into the program that Abeer and Josh created that is pushing neurotherapy to the frontline of survivor care and support. You'll hear Abeer describe the lightbulb moment when she realized the missing neurological information necessary for her patients' healing, how she teamed up with Josh Brown, and the long road that led to the creation of the program. We also touch on issues of transport and hear some visionary steps to create much-needed mobile advocacy services. Finally, you'll hear some moving testimonies of the truly transformational impact that neurofeedback has! Join us for another inspiring conversation highlighting the incredible work that's driving healing care. Find the Harris County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council online at hcdvcc.org, and the Fort Bend Women's Center at fbwc.org. Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults have lived through a lifetime of discrimination, social stigma, prejudice, and marginalization.  Is the care that we are giving them in later life changing any of that or are we pushing them back into the closet? This is what we talk about in this week's podcast with Carey Candrian from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and Angela Primbas from Stanford University (and future geriatrics fellow at UCSF!).   Carey has published a wonderful article in the Gerontologist titled “She's Dying and I Can't Say We're Married?”: End-of-Life Care for LGBT Older Adults, in which she describes how older LGBT adults may be at higher risk for having their health care wishes ignored or disregarded, their families of choice are less likely to be included in their decision making, and they may experience increased isolation, bullying, mistreatment, or abuse, which ultimately contribute to receipt of poor-quality health care.  We talk about the scripts that we use in medicine that may hamper open discussions about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) including the term “family meeting”, the need to revise our intake forms to incorporate SOGI questions, and the need for education.  We also get a chance to hear Alex Sing “The Story” whose lyrics very much speak to the subject at hand: “All of these lines across my faceTell you the story of who I amSo many stories of where I've beenAnd how I got to where I amBut these stories don't mean anythingWhen you've got no one to tell them to…” If you want to learn more, please check out these wonderful resources: LGBT Resource Center https://www.lgbtagingcenter.org LGBTQ Resource List from GLAAD: https://www.glaad.org/resourcelist National Resource Center on LGBT Aging: https://www.lgbtagingcenter.org/ Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders (SAGE): https://www.sageusa.org/
