Alcohol's role in the workplace is often overlooked or brushed aside, but its impact is significant, especially during events like office parties or gatherings. It's crucial to create an inclusive environment that caters to those who don't drink or want alternatives. The presence of alcohol-free options should not be an afterthought but an integral part of any workplace event, making everyone feel included and respected.   From my conversation with Dave, it's evident that personal relationships and societal pressures can heavily influence our drinking habits. The workplace culture, often centred around alcohol-related activities, can contribute to someone's drinking patterns and mental health challenges.   Addressing mental health issues tied to alcohol consumption is essential. Employees' struggles with alcohol may go unnoticed or unaddressed in most workplaces, leading to more severe consequences down the line. Encouraging open discussions, providing support, and reshaping the workplace culture around alcohol are crucial steps in fostering a healthier and more inclusive environment.   Dave's personal journey and his focus on men's mental health underscore the need for workplaces to rethink their approach to alcohol consumption and its effects on mental well-being. It's time for organisations to prioritise support, education, and resources, breaking the stigma associated with addressing alcohol-related issues within the workplace.

Welcome back to the Professional Drinkers Podcast! Despite the chilling UK weather, I'm committed to my icy cold water dips, a ritual that challenges and resets my mind.   Recently, Uber Eats' wine-centric advert got me thinking about alcohol advertising. It often glamorises drinking without showing its downsides. I'm teaming up with the Sober business network to voice concerns about this misleading portrayal.   This week, I'm thrilled to host Marin Nelson, founder of “Stealth Heath" - a Tech Company for Substance Use Disorder in the Workplace and co-founder of Soberforce. Marin's journey to sobriety at 24 led her to create Soberforce at Salesforce, providing support and breaking the stigma around addiction in the workplace.   Her story illustrates that success and sobriety aren't mutually exclusive. Marin's work empowers others to say no to drinking-centric events without fear of judgment.   Alcohol issues in the workplace are prevalent across various industries. Marin's efforts emphasise the importance of inclusive and supportive work environments.

As the leaves turn golden and the sun shines brightly, it's a magical time of year. I recently spent a few days in Northumberland, surrounded by the stunning scenery of blue skies and colourful autumn leaves. It's a joy to wake up sober and fully embrace these beautiful mornings.   I also have an exciting update to share about my cold water swimming journey. I've acquired an Arctic pod, which is like a grown-up's paddling pool in the shape of a barrel. The challenge is to take a dip in it every day throughout the winter. So far, I've been consistent, except for days when I'm away from home. It's getting progressively more challenging as the temperatures drop, and I'll be posting some photos on my social media soon.   In the alcohol-free world, an interesting article caught my eye in the Daily Mail, a publication I don't typically favour. The article discusses the mummy wine culture's role in the UK, where women are among the world's top binge drinkers. Surprisingly, only 25% of women worldwide consume alcohol, meaning 75% are sober. This statistic was an eye opener for me. The article rightly points out the harmful influence of mummy wine culture, which normalises excessive drinking, often using humour or large wine glasses to downplay the issue.   The podcast takes a deeper dive into the stigma around not drinking. I recently received a call from someone who had never consumed alcohol but faced pressure from friends who assumed they were an alcoholic. The stigma of not drinking was troubling for them, similar to the challenges I faced. My guest this week, Mandy, runs the Talk HR Club, a community for HR independents. She shares her journey of becoming a non-drinker and the pressure she faced to drink in social situations.   We discuss the importance of challenging the stigma around not drinking and creating a world where saying "I don't drink" is perfectly acceptable. Mandy's story resonates with mine, and it's the inspiration for this week's episode, "Sober in a World of Drinkers." We delve into the peer pressure, unhelpful comments, and judgments that non-drinkers often face.   Thank you, Mandy, for being a part of the podcast and sharing your story. It's been a pleasure having you as my guest, and I appreciate your support for the Professional Drinkers Podcast.

He illuminates a troubling drinking culture within the corporate world, notably within the tech community. He describes scenarios such as a four-day team-building offsite with eight alcohol-centric activities, which raises serious questions about inclusivity for employees who don't drink, whether due to pregnancy, cultural beliefs, or personal choices.   Our conversation underscores the urgent need for organisations to adopt more inclusive practices and prioritise the well-being of their employees. This inclusivity isn't just about avoiding discrimination; it's about making sure that all team members feel valued and comfortable. Ryan's passion for addressing this issue and shedding light on the problems associated with excessive drinking in the workplace is evident.

Welcome back to the Professional Drinkers Podcast! How are you all doing? I hope everything's going well. These past couple of weeks have been quite odd in terms of weather. It's so British of me to start by talking about the weather, but it's been a washout lately. I can't help but feel sorry for the kids who had to endure this downpour after they went through that scorching heatwave in June, especially those who were taking exams - including my own kids, I have to admit. So, yeah, things aren't ideal over here in the UK. Nonetheless, let's stay positive and move forward.   Now, let me share some exciting news. I had the opportunity this week to visit the brand-new Functional Drinks Club, right here in the small Yorkshire town of Wotley, not far from where I live in Horsforth. It's truly fantastic! A big shoutout to Kevin Gillespy, the founder and owner of this club. They've got kombucha on tap, something I've never seen before. And that's not all – they're offering mushroom alcohol-free beers and an array of other non-alcoholic beverages from various brands. It's truly inspiring to witness such a space opening up right here in the North, in Yorkshire. You can probably tell how thrilled I am about this happening practically in my own backyard. I'll definitely be making return visits. I practically bought a sample of every kombucha they had for sale, and I've been enjoying one every evening. Some new favourites have emerged, like the U and I brand – never heard of them before, so I'll need to give them a shoutout for their fantastic kombucha.   Speaking of exciting developments, we're also gearing up to launch new services. We've recently taken on some wonderful clients and we're working on specialized services for the grocery and finance sectors. If you're involved in grocery retail or supplies, or if finance is your area – whether it's credit, accountancy, or loans – we've got something special in the works. These services aim to provide a safe and confidential space in the workplace for people to explore their relationship with alcohol, free from judgment. We're building on the success of the Sober Curious Society at the Co-op, and I can't wait to share more details. If you want a sneak peek or more information, drop me a note at hello@choosesunrise.co.uk. You can also check out our events page on the website for upcoming sessions.   Now, let's dive into this week's guest. I'm thrilled to introduce Karl Considine, an HR director and the host of the captivating podcast "What Next." This podcast delves deep into personal recovery journeys, and Karl is an exceptional host. He's been sober for over two years now, and in our conversation, he offers insightful perspectives on individual responsibility and the influence of work environments on drinking behaviours. Karl's own experiences in various roles shed light on the lack of alcohol-related education and policies in workplaces. He emphasises the need for more nuanced approaches, especially in environments like startups where social drinking is often part of the culture. As always, it's an engaging and enlightening discussion, and I hope you enjoy listening to Karl's insights as much as I did.   Remember, you can find more about Karl and his podcast, "What Next," over on Instagram @whatnext.podcast. Thank you for joining me this week, and I look forward to sharing more exciting conversations and developments in the world of Professional Drinkers. Cheers!

In this episode, I'm joined by Victoria Bond, CEO of Tenspace, to discuss measuring the success of the Alcohol Safe Workplace Accreditation. We will collaborate on pre- and post-accreditation surveys to demonstrate the impact of creating an alcohol-safe workplace. Addressing workplace safety, recent statistics show an increase in workplace fatalities and a report suggests alcohol is involved in 40% of industrial accidents. With the rise of remote work, it becomes challenging for employers to monitor alcohol consumption, which can affect productivity, well-being, and safety. Employers should create an environment where employees feel comfortable seeking help and prioritize their well-being. In this episode, Victoria and I explore the impact of alcohol culture on employee engagement, recruitment for culture contribution, and the changing dynamics of the workforce. We discuss challenges such as absenteeism and workplace accidents, and the need to rethink alcohol culture and consider alcohol-free workplace policies. As some of you might have noticed, there's been a bit of a break between podcast releases. I know you will understand why when I explain that I've been facing some incredibly challenging circumstances, with one of my daughters being taken seriously ill and hospitalised for several months.   At one point, I thought I'd simply shut down Choose Sunrise as life really did feel just too difficult. However, I'd just entered into a new collaboration with Andy Mee of the Alcohol Free Drinks Company and this episode's guest, Hannah Taylor, of the Sober Butterfly Collective. Between them, they persuaded me to go ahead with an event that we had planned to launch our new collaboration. “We'll do everything,” they said, “all you have to do is turn up.”   I cannot tell you how moved and inspired I have been by their kindness.   Attending the event and seeing how many people out there we can help and what a difference we can make in the world gave me a much needed boost, and I can honestly say that it's put the spring back in my step after a month of feeling overwhelmed and sad. That's why I have decided to keep going and continue with this work, albeit perhaps at a slightly more sedate pace, because I honestly believe it is my vocation.   I also believe that the guest for this episode, Hannah Taylor, has found her calling in life, too! Hannah is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. Using her own experience of what it's like to socialising sober, she's developed a network of volunteers called the Sober Butterfly Collective that organise face to face sober meet-ups, completely free of charge, up and down the UK.   It's astonishing what this young woman has achieved without ever receiving a penny for all her hard work, because, in her own words, “Friendship is free”. I have found this so inspiring that I have decided to become her first ever sponsor, donating a minimum of £50 to the Sober Butterfly Collective for every course and every accreditation sold.   Because friendship is free.   If you'd like to know more about the work we do, head to hello@choosesunrise.co.uk   You can find out more the Sober Butterfly Collective at https://soberbutterflycollective.com/ or on Instagram

Have you ever been caught up in the work hard, play hard culture of your workplace? Do you feel that drinking is part of your workplace identity? Do you work in a culture where you ‘have to' drink in order to do your job? This week's guest, Natalie Elvin, of Elvin Writes, reflects on her experiences of workplace drinking culture, from both her teaching days and her corporate IT office jobs, before becoming self-employed as a copy writer. We explore the role that the boozy night out plays in team bonding and how the expectations are set from the top, with the ‘what goes on tour stays on tour' mentality…with some truly cringe moments recounted along the way! We chat about some interesting points around the pros and cons of encouraging this kind of workplace behaviour. There's no doubt that a lot of fun can be had on work nights out for the ‘in crowd', but is it OK to only ever have boozy doo's as the go-to workplace event? Is it OK to only attract a one dimensional workforce? Or should employers be thinking more broadly about inclusion to attract a diverse workforce? Episode 4: Inclusivity for Non-Drinkers at Events with Elizabeth Gration

This episode is all about Generation Z, or Gen Zed (or even Gen Zee, depending on how ‘street' you are). At an upper age of around 26, this cohort are well and truly making their way into the UK's workforce. They've grown up in a more protected environment than the likes of myself, Gen X, who spent my teenage years downing pints, keeping up with the boys and generally making a nuisance of myself at any opportunity. This has had a profound impact on their attitude towards alcohol. Clearly, I'm taking in very general terms here, and there is as much diversity amongst this population as there are people in it. One trend that is clear, though, is that risky behaviours such as binge drinking, unprotected sex, drug taking, and dangerous driving are all on the decrease. I'd be fascinated to understand if one is a catalyst for the others. In my experience, removing the alcohol tends to remove the risk of some of these other behaviours occurring, too. I'm sure we can all relate! I learned so much from interviewing a Gen Zed guest this week, Elizabeth Gration, Senior Content Marketing Executive at MacNaught Digital. Elizabeth also writes for Micro Biz Mag, which is where I first came across her excellent article on the importance of inclusivity for non-drinkers at events. I was genuinely surprised, and delighted, to hear about Elizabeth's work to support people who arrive at University with no experience of drinking alcohol. What a brilliant initiative that not only keeps these people safe, but promotes a real sense of belonging for them. Elizabeth gives us some delightful insights into best practice when it comes to promoting inclusivity at events, from Universities right through to conferences and workplace settings. It's truly heart-warming to hear how times are changing and how progressive organisations are putting in the small amount of effort needed to make a huge leap forwards in this space. With Gen Zed pouring out of Universities and into the workforce, employers who understand this cultural shift and are ready to accommodate the sober curious in their workplace will attract the best of this talent. Believe me, productivity levels and absence rates from non-drinkers are very desirable attributes in a new recruit, in stark relief to the hangovers I used to cover up at work in my 20's. The world is changing – are you ready? Do you have a different view? Or would you like to share how your workplace is supporting the sober curious? Episode 3: How Employers Can Raise Awareness of the Link Between Alcohol and Breast Cancer with Kathryn Elliott

A very Happy New Year to all my listeners! In this early January 2023 episode, I touch upon my views as to why New Year's Resolutions don't work, and how you can get so much more value from choosing what you want more of in your life, instead. There's also updates from some of the workplace Sober Curious Societies that I run and why it's so important to support Dry January in the workplace. Guest speakers; alcohol free drink tasting; check your EAP; free resources – subscribe! I'm delighted to welcome my first guest of 2023, Kathryn Elliott, who works as an alcohol mindset coach and is a passionate advocate of promoting understanding of the link between alcohol and breast cancer. Kathryn knows firsthand the fear and devastation that this diagnosis brings, and she draws upon her own experiences, both in the corporate world and as a survivor of breast cancer, to call out the need for better information and awareness. There are millions of women (and men) worldwide who drink alcohol and are unaware of the strong link between even moderate drinking and increased risk of breast cancer. Of course, it's not all down to employers to put this message out there; public health campaigns would ideally originate from governments. However, in the absence of meaningful action worldwide on this issue, employee wellbeing programmes are brilliantly positioned to start making changes in this space. Do you have a different view? Or would you like to share how your workplace is supporting the sober curious? I'd love to air your views on the Podcast, so head to https://choosesunrise.co.uk/podcasts and complete the Be My Guest form. More About Kathryn Elliott Six weeks into her alcohol-free life in 2019 Kathryn Elliott was suddenly thrown a curveball when she discovered a large lump in her breast while getting dressed to race out the door to work. She instinctually knew something wasn't right and two days later was diagnosed with locally advanced breast cancer. Within a week she started an intense 6-month program of chemotherapy. Kath is now living cancer free and has a successful alcohol coaching business - The Alcohol Mindset Coach. As a former binge drinker for over 30 years, she coaches from lived experience and believes vulnerability and sharing our stories is one of the most powerful tools in healing and finding a more balanced relationship with alcohol. Kathryn works with men and women who want to look more closely at and change their mindset around alcohol, particularly those who identify as following healthy lifestyle principles but also have a problematic binge drinking history that they are struggling to shake. Her unique binge drinking breakthrough coaching programs have been developed to specifically address and disrupt long term binge drinking behaviour. Kath is based in Melbourne where she lives with her husband of 20 years, Paul and their three sons (Oscar 17, Tom 16 and Hugo 14) and much-loved golden English cocker spaniel, Ralph. As we approach ‘silly season', it's a great time to pause and notice just how central alcohol has become to our social interactions. It's my pleasure to introduce you to Jen Gilhoi, co-founder of the Zero Proof Collective, who is on a mission to create healthy social experiences that decentralise alcohol. Jen and I are doing very similar work on our respective sides of the Atlantic, raising awareness of the importance of normalising sobriety and empowering people to make healthier choices around alcohol. Look out for Jen's Ted Talk in the New Year, Sober Not Sombre, which I'll be sharing on social media. There's also some pretty big news about alcohol this week. The Scottish government are consulting on alcohol marketing, putting forward a comprehensive fact-based proposal designed to reduce alcohol harm. The paper starts by outlining the case for change. There statistics are staggering: 24 people a week die from diseases that can only be caused by alcohol in Scotland alone. A further 73 deaths per week are partly attributable to alcohol. So almost 100 preventable deaths per week. The paper goes on to argue that reducing the attractiveness of alcohol is a key factor that can reduce this harm. Personally, I couldn't agree more. If we allowed cigarettes to be wrapped in fancy packaging and given up-lighting on a pedestal in bars, there'd be an outcry! I'm delighted to see the Scottish government tackling these double standards. Do you have a different view? I'd love to debate this on the Podcast, so head to https://choosesunrise.co.uk/podcasts and complete the Be My Guest form. Episode 1: Alcohol, Football and Domestic Abuse; and Alcohol, Loss and Bereavement In this, the very first episode of Professional Drinkers, I'll be kicking off with a discussion about the link between alcohol, football and domestic abuse. In line with the start of the Men's Football World Cup 2022, I'll share some of the key statistics and some recourses for HR professionals to be aware of to make sure we can all enjoy the games. I'm so privileged to introduce Michelle Smith as my debut Podcast guest. Michelle is the Founder and Director of Loss, Grief and Bereavement Support (formerly Empower Workplace Solutions), which specialises in helping employers to improve retention rates by delivering training on how to support staff experiencing loss, grief, bereavement and compassion fatigue. Having worked as a palliative care nurse, Michelle knows all too well how the taboos that surround talking about death can be so painfully isolating for those who are living with grief. Michelle is courageous in her endeavours to bring this taboo topic into the workplace and I'm delighted to announce that, since recording this interview, we've collaborated to develop a wellbeing workshop that explores the relationship between alcohol and grief. Sadly, a loss of any kind can so often be the trigger to a shift in a person's relationship with alcohol. I went from being a happy, sociable drinker to someone who drank to forget. The speed at which I then started sinking into a very unhealthy relationship with alcohol was alarming. If you'd like to include a Grief and Alcohol workshop in your workplace wellbeing package, get in touch at hello@choosesunrise.co.uk You can find out more about the work that Michelle does at https://www.lossgriefandbereavementsupport.co.ukor following Michelle on Linked In at https://www.linkedin.com/in/msmithempowerws/ For advice on how to identify and respond to colleagues experiencing domestic abuse, this leaflet from the Department of Health is a free resource available to everyone: https://safelives.org.uk/sites/default/files/resources/DV%20Employer%27s%20guidance%20FINAL%20Update%203%20-%20SafeLives%20rebranded.pdf For further resources relating to alcohol and domestic abuse, download this excellent leaflet from Alcohol Change UK: https://s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/files.alcoholchange.org.uk/documents/Alcohol-and-Domestic_Abuse_Oct2021.pdf Z9NkqFycjplEJwfYO08W
