Unless otherwise noted, all Web addresses mentioned were functional as of 5-6-22. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of May 9 and May 16, 2022. This episode from is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. MUSIC – ~14 sec – instrumental. That's part of “New Spring Waltz,” by the late Madeline MacNeil, who was a well-known and highly regarded musician based in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Each new spring brings a chance to focus on the life cycles of wildlife. This mid-spring episode of Water Radio explores some connections among nesting birds, trees, and water. Have a listen for about 30 seconds to three mystery sounds, and see if you know these three bird species who nest in trees near water, either always or at least sometimes. And here's a hint: you'll be singing a melodious trill, if you hit this mystery out of the park. SOUNDS - 29 sec. If you guessed two warblers and an oriole, you're right! And you get bodacious bird bragging rights if you recognized, first, the Prothonotary Warbler; second, the Northern Parula, also a kind of warbler; and third, the bird for which Baltimore's baseball team is named, the Baltimore Oriole. All three of these songbirds are found in Virginia in the spring and summer breeding season. During that period, the Prothonotary Warbler is common in Virginia's central and southern Coastal Plain and can occasionally be found in some other parts of the Commonwealth; the Baltimore Oriole is common outside of the Coastal Plain; and the Northern Parula is common statewide. The three species show a range of attachment to water-side trees as their nesting habitat. The Prothonotary Warbler is particularly known for nesting in cavities in trees around water; in fact, the bird is sometimes called the “Swamp Warbler” in the southeastern United States. The Northern Parula typically nests in trees along rivers and wetlands, especially in areas where it can find the materials it prefers for making its hanging nests: Spanish Moss or a kind of stringy lichen; this bird is also known to make nests out of debris left in trees after floods. The Baltimore Oriole is the least water-attached of these three species, being found nesting high in trees in many areas outside of deep woods, including parks and yards; however, streamsides are among the species preferred areas for the bird's fibrous, hanging nests. If you're near streams, rivers, or wetlands and you see or hear any of these three birds, look to nearby trees for cavities or hanging materials that may be harboring the birds' next generation. Thanks to Lang Elliott for permission to use the bird sounds, from the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs. Thanks also to Janita Baker of Blue Lion Dulcimers and Guitars for permission to use Madeline MacNeil's music, and we close with about 25 more seconds of “New Spring Waltz.” MUSIC – ~26 sec – instrumental. Ever since the pandemic, the demand for activewear has soared 35% in a two-year period. Sales in the men's and women's apparel category rose from $52.3 billion in 2019 to $70.8 billion in 2021.It comes as no surprise that big-box retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Kohl's have launched private-labeled brands to enter this growing market. In today's episode, we go over this market demand and how Walmart has revealed another activewear line with fashion and fitness couple Michelle Smith and Stacey Griffith.
Politico's publication Monday night of a leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion in a Mississippi abortion rights case set off a firestorm of criticism from abortion-rights supporters, and paroxysms of joy from abortion rights opponents. In a 98-page draft of an opinion that was not supposed to made public until the Court majority signed off on a final version, Justice Samuel Alito stated bluntly, “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision....” He's referring, of course to the two landmark Supreme Court cases that have defined laws about abortion access: Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood. Reaction from Democrats on Capitol Hill was swift. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to call a vote on legislation that would codify in law a woman's right to end her pregnancy. Joining Tom now is Sen. Chris Van Hollen. He is a co-sponsor of the Women's Health Protection Act, a version of which passed in the House last September. Sen. Van Hollen was first elected to the Senate in 2016. He is standing for re-election this year. His opponent in the Democratic primary is Michelle Smith, a policy analyst at USAID and an audio engineer. Ten Republicans will appear on the ballot in July in the race to be the nominee to oppose Sen. Van Hollen in November. Sen Chris Van Hollen joins us on Zoom from his office on Capitol Hill. This week's Open Country is a journey along a stretch of familiar coastline, but also back in time, to a far less familiar landscape. Emily Knight explores the Deep History Coast of North Norfolk, where the crumbling shoreline has given up some of the most impressive fossil remains ever discovered. To help her get a sense of the landscape that came before this one, she meets palaeontologist and author of "Otherlands", Dr Thomas Halliday, who explains what this ancient place would have looked like, how it might have felt to walk through it, and who you might have met along the way. One of our companions on this stroll through time might have been a true giant of the past - four metres tall and weighing in at ten tonnes - the West Runton Mammoth. It's the most complete mammoth skeleton ever found, buried in the shifting sands of the beach for hundreds of thousands of years, before being discovered after a storm in 1990. While we stroll along a sandy beach, the West Runton Mammoth would have strolled instead along a muddy river-bed through a dense forest, surrounded by sights both familiar to us, and extraordinary: seven-foot tall deer, rhinos and hyaenas. Dr Tori Herridge, evolutionary biologist and elephant expert from the Natural History Museum, is on hand to talk about the life and death of this impressive creature, while local fossil-hunter Michelle Smith gives Emily a lesson in safe and sustainable fossil-hunting. Alongside these extraordinary animals were people too - of a kind. Not quite our ancestors, more like our very distant cousins, Homo Heidelbergensis and Homo Antecessor both made their mark along this stretch of coastline. Dr David Waterhouse from Norfolk Museum explains how we think they might have lived, and what that tells us about our own origins.
In honor of Alcohol Awareness Month I am excited to bring you a conversation with my dear friend Michelle Smith who is normalizing sobriety in our boozy culture. Michelle left corporate after 20 years with nothing more than passion, a laptop, and a dream. She is proud to have created "Recovery is the New Black," a digital community that touches thousands. Her passion for maternal mental health emerged after becoming a mother herself. Alcohol became a coping tool, eventually resulting in severe alcohol use disorder. Her unique blend of education and personal experience serves her well in supporting moms postpartum who are reaching for alcohol to cope with the hard seasons of motherhood. As an educated professional working in the addiction field, she never imagined she would find myself struggling to find a healthy relationship with alcohol. She has learned no amount of alcohol is good for her, and she is far from alone. Addiction does not discriminate, and no one is immune. She went from a depressed, anxious mom using alcohol daily to numb, to living a life of confidence, freedom, and purpose. She recovers out loud to let others know alcohol is not an accessory to motherhood. Michelle and I talk about how anyone can find themselves struggling with addiction, what to do when you realize you want to change, and why you are not alone if you want to live sober and happy. Here's what you will learn: How Michelle recognized her own harmful behavior (5:21) How addiction doesn't discriminate and how reaching for mind altering chemicals to feel better is a slippery slope (12:03) Why confronting recovery is difficult but lifesaving (20:31) Myths about drinking alcohol (22:00) How to let go of shame, embrace change and claim your happiness (27:44) How alcohol keeps you from getting restorative sleep (32:19) Why accountability was important to Michelle sharing her story (41:53) What did you learn from this episode? Today I am interviewing Michelle Smith who is the Founder and Managing Director of Empower Workplace solutions. Michelle has an empathetic leadership approach to all the services she offers, today we focused on how to equip your leaders to have those conversations around supporting your teams in loss or grief, this could be loss of a loved one, loss of a marriage or even financial loss. Michelle shares a number of ways to have those emotional conversations, which in essence are through an empathetic approach, they are 1. Really focus on the employee and have no distractions 2. Make the employee feel valued 3. Listen to them fully, give space to the conversation and finally 4. It is ok to have silence, allow the space. And overall use empathy rather than sympathy when having these emotional conversations, it is far more empowering for the employee. Today on the show, I'm joined by Michelle Smith, founder of Curated with Conscience, which is a beautiful gift hamper business that exists to have a positive impact on the environment and sustainability. Michelle's business has grown quite rapidly over the last couple of years in particular, and whilst it's easy to think that more revenue fixes all problems, that's not the case at all. Fast growth brings with it a whole set of challenges, and what I love about this conversation with Michelle is that she doesn't shy away from sharing those challenges and how she's moving past them. I also love how Michelle has grown this business while still sticking to her values and keeping her social impact goal front and centre. Consumers and corporations are much more intentional about how and where they spend their money and want to spend in a way that drives positive change in the world and on the environment. So as small business owners, we definitely do not need to compromise on those beliefs in order to grow a significant or profitable business. I'm really excited for Michelle to share her story and to impart some of her experience and wisdom learned through her experience to date, and I think you're gonna love this conversation! Listen now to hear Michelle's inspiring story about staying true to her values and managing a fast growing business!
