Something I am so grateful for is the leadership experience I received growing up in the church. From a young age, I got involved in worship teams. I led small groups. I developed skills. I was put on stages I had no business being on. Church wasn't just a weekly service we attended. It was a leadership incubator. L. Michelle Smith has written a new book called Call And Response: 10 Leadership Lessons From the Black Church. In it she discusses how the Black Church has historically developed high level business leaders. The book borrows from culture, neuroscience, and positive psychology to describe the power of the Black Church and why it has produced so many high level leaders . Whether you've grown up in the Black Church or have never even visited, we all have something to learn here. Because if the church stops developing leaders in favor of merely hiring out a professional, performative workforce, we could be in some trouble. This is David Santistevan. You can reach me anytime at david@beyondsundayworship.com As always, thank you for listening. Topics Covered: Why the history of Call and Response in the Black Church matters to us today Leadership development in the local church Leadership lessons learned in the Black Church What it’s like being a successful Black women in corporate America Why The Black Church is seen as inferior in both white and black spaces Resources Mentioned: Show Sponsor: Planning Center Call And Response: 10 Leadership Lessons From The Black Church by L. You can organize your ministries and keep everyone on your team communicating and aligned around what's going on. As a worship leader, good communication is key to building a strong worship team. You can cultivate relationships while ensuring everyone has what they need to successfully prep for your services. But why not take it up a notch using the chat feature? Built right into the Services mobile app—which, by the way, you should totally download if you haven't already—chat helps you coordinate all the service details with your team. Plus, you can have fun while doing it! No more juggling emails, group texts, and multiple apps to ensure your whole team is aligned. Chat will simplify your communication in one convenient place through the Services mobile app. And everyone can ask questions, request prayer, or join the banter in real-time with one another. The really cool part about chatting with your teams? Team members are dynamically added or removed from conversations as availability changes! So if your original bass player suddenly declines (why is it so hard to find a bass player, anyway?), your newly scheduled bass player is automatically added to the chat conversation. All of your chat conversations stay in sync. No more outdated group threads or irrelevant messages! So what are you waiting for? Download the Services app and start chatting! Grab your your old cassette tapes, and your deepest sense of injustice, because today we're getting a broader understanding of the 1993 West Memphis Murders and the three little boys who never made it home.On May 5th, 1993, three second graders- Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers left their homes in West Memphis, Arkansas for an ordinary bike ride. They were eight years old. They never came back. What happened that night would become one of the most infamous child murder cases in American history. In 1994, three teenagers- Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley would be convicted of those murders, in a trial driven by satanic panic, coerced confessions, and a complete collapse of justice. In 1996, HBO aired Paradise Lost and the world saw what had happened in that courtroom. Over the next twenty years, the West Memphis Three would fight for their freedom from behind bars. They'd get it eventually- kind of. But this case? It's not over. There's new evidence. There's new DNA. There's a chance to finally do what Arkansas never did: find out the truth. In part one of this series, we're not starting with suspects. We're starting with Stevie, Michael, and Chris-who they were, what they loved, and what was taken from them.Because before this became a media circus, before it became a cause, it was a tragedy.(originally released in May of 2023, full sources available in show notes)Sources:Jenkins, P (1992). We told you things the way that they seemed, now it's time to get into things the way that they actually were.In this episode we try and gain a broader understanding of the "Satanic Panic" and it's origins (from preschools to memoirs to rock music) while examining how this same search for satan narrowed the murder investigation by the West Memphis Police Department in 1993We learn about the way polygraphs were used in the investigation and why they held so much weight for the police and some of the people who may have gotten off without much questioning. We also include passages from Damien's book Life After Death and the book Jason Baldwin helped write with Mara Leverit, Devil's Knot. We end this episode with a confession from Jesse Misskelley and the arrests of Damien Echols and Jason Baldwin. There's so much to unpack in this episode and this case!Sources:Jenkins, P (1992). When a single poem transformed Satan from a minor biblical character into a horned, pitchfork-wielding supervillain, it sparked centuries of hysteria that would culminate in 1980s America imprisoning innocent people for imaginary crimes against children who "remembered" flying teachers and underground tunnels that never existed.CORRECTION TO THE EPISODE: While angels are often depicted with wings, the Bible doesn't consistently portray them this way. I said the bible does not describe angels with wings, but that is incorrect. Some angelic beings, like cherubim and seraphim, are described with wings (e.g., in Exodus 25:20, Ezekiel 10:5-7, and Isaiah 6:2-7), but other angels appear in human form without any mention of wings (e.g., Genesis 18-19, Hebrews 13:2).Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast = https://weirddarkness.com/surveyIN THIS EPISODE: Hollywood portrays Satan as everywhere - controlling world leaders, possessing pastors, inhabiting Ouija boards and children's toys. Yet Satan appears only a handful of times in the Bible. The horned, red devil we picture comes not from scripture but from a poem. Most Satanists don't even worship the devil. While Satan poses real danger, we often give him too much credit - blaming him for our bad choices or wild conspiracy theories. Still, some cases make you wonder about his true influence. What does Satan really look like? What's behind 666? Do people kill in his name? Are certain places under Satanic influence? We explore it all.ABOUT WEIRD DARKNESS: Weird Darkness is a true crime and paranormal podcast narrated by professional award-winning voice actor, Darren Marlar. In part one of this series we told you about Stevie, Michael, Chris and the murders that would forever change West Memphis Arkansas, and in part two we covered the satanic panic that led to the arrests of Jason, Damien, and Jessie. In part three of our West Memphis Murders series we focus on the time period after the arrests- June 1993 to jury selection for Jessie's trial in January of 1994.We hear from the Paradise Lost filmmakers, the families of the accused and include exercerpts from both Damien and Jason's books as well as clips from Paradise Lost and Devil's Knot as we gain a broader understanding of the work private investigators like Ron Lax and the public defenders appointed in the case did in preparation for trial. We end the episode with a conversation with Brooke's dad, The Honorable Judge Fisher and hear his perspective on Satanic Panic and this case.CW: child abuse, child death, self-harmSources:Jenkins, P (1992). Grab your death metal albums and don't talk to the cops without a lawyer because today we're gaining a broader understanding of the satanic panic of the 80s and 90s and how it greatly impacted the case of the West Memphis ThreeIn part one of this series we told you about Stevie, Michael, Chris and the murders that would forever change West Memphis Arkansas. In 1980, Michelle Smith published a book that triggered the Satanic Panic, a worldwide fear that Satan worshippers were recruiting millions to embrace satanism.  Today, I explore the surprising science of false memories with Dr. Charan Ranganath, author of Why We Remember. Dr. Ranganath reveals how memory is more imagination than recollection, why some people vividly remember things that never happened, and why the Satanic Panic was based on fiction not fact.  You'll learn: How Michelle Remembers sparked the Satanic Panic and shaped public fear. Why memories “recovered” in therapy can feel real but be completely false. How a memory expert misremembered her own mother's death. The shocking study where 40% of participants believed they committed a crime they never did. ---- Download the Reading List: https://nudge.kit.com/readinglist Sign up to my newsletter: https://www.nudgepodcast.com/mailing-list Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/phill-agnew-22213187/ Watch Nudge on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@nudgepodcast/ Charan's book Why We Remember: https://charanranganath.com/ ---- Sources: 60 Minutes Australia. No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: The horror entertainment industry would make you think that Satan is everywhere, controlling world leaders, possessing church pastors, inhabiting the bodies of kids who play with Ouija boards, even somehow controlling your children's dolls or other toys… all in the name of the Lord Lucifer. Ironically, Satan is only mentioned a handful of times in the bible, despite what you've been led to believe by Hollywood. The image of Satan we typically envision is actually not from the bible at all, but from a poem. Most Satanists, despite the clever name, don't openly worship the devil. And while I do believe in Satan and the danger he poses – I believe we are giving him way too much credit for some things – especially some of the conspiracy theories people believe, or blaming him for when we do bad things, (i.e., “the devil made me do it!”). That being said, there are some areas that you have to wonder if perhaps he truly did place his crooked finger upon in order to insert his evil influence. What does Satan look like? What's the meaning of 666? Do people really kill in the name of Satan? Are some places or objects somehow under a Satanic influence? We have a lot to cover.CHAPTERS & TIME STAMPS (All Times Approximate)…00:00:00.000 = Cold Open and Show Intro00:04:32.196 = The Satanic Panic00:16:38.682 = Satanic Elements And Imagery00:32:16.363 = Your Idea of Satan is Wrong00:51:46.562 = Satan's Appearances In The Bible01:07:41.330 = Teens Who Murdered In The Name of Satan01:20:46.655 = The Devil's Property01:33:19.637 = Let's Blame It On Satan01:45:28.977 = The Truth Behind 66601:52:30.669 = Show OutroSOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…#ChurchOfTheUndead, “The Dangers of Demons And The Devil”: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/5chya3vk#ChurchOfTheUndead, “Are We Wrong About How Satan Works?”: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2wfmwbed#ChurchOfTheUndead, “The Devil Might Be Deceiving You In These End Times”: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/fw5z2z4f#ChurchOfTheUndead, all episodes: https://weirddarkness.com/churchVIDEO: 20/20 “The Devil Worshippers”: https://youtu.be/vG_w-uElGbMBOOK: “Michelle Remembers” by Lawrence Pazder M.D. and Michelle Smith: https://amzn.to/3QNB2F6BOOK: “We Believe The Children – A Moral Panic In The 1980s” by Richard Beck: https://amzn.to/3ODWN7uBOOK: “Republic of Lies - America's Conspiracy Theorists And Their Surprising Rise to Power' by Anna Merlan:https://amzn.to/3YNcfmC“The Satanic Panic” by Alan Yuhas for the New York Times: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/mr3me97t“Satanic Elements And Imagery” by Jacob Shelton for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/bdzxhm3v“Your Idea of Satan Is Wrong” by Inigo Gonzalez for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/895x9y8y; and BillyGraham.ca: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p858f5w“Teens Who Murdered In The Name of Satan” by Jacob Shelton for Unspeakable Crimes: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/bdejvvjt“Satan's Appearances in The Bible” by Jodi Smith for Weird History: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/yckkrfus“The Devil's Property” by Jodi Smith for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/ypmzdyza“Let's Blame it On Satan” by Jacob Shelton for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/42hxcp8y“The Truth Behind 666” by Jacoby Bancroft” for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2p877skp; and AMatterOfTruth.com: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/2479ytt2Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
