How a Non-Drinker Built an Award-Winning Mezcal Brand in Just 1 Year | Alejandra Flores

Send us Fan MailA mezcal brand can be more than a label and a flavour profile. We're joined by Alejandra Flores, president and owner of Mayu Mezcal, and her story hits on culture, craft, and a mission that reaches back to Oaxaca and forward to real community impact. She built Mayu to honour her Indigenous grandmother, a woman who never learned to read or write yet still became a fearless businesswoman and lifelong inspiration. We get practical about what separates authentic mezcal from marketing: why organic mezcal certification matters, what “artisanal mezcal” actually means, and how espadin agave and production choices shape a spirit you sip slowly rather than shoot. Alejandra also breaks down mezcal vs tequila, from the regions and agave varieties to the traditional serving ritual with orange slices and sal de chapulín, the famous grasshopper salt from Oaxacan cuisine. If you're curious about entrepreneurship in the spirits industry, this conversation goes behind the curtain on licensing, distributors, and the relationship driven grind of getting bottles into bars, restaurants, casinos, and retailers like Total Wine. Alejandra shares what it's like to be one of the few women mezcaleras, how she keeps momentum through slow growth, and why her long game includes a foundation to support elderly people and stray animals in Oaxaca. A Drink with The Problem Drinker Kyle Kouri

I have never reviewed or even written about a memoir before. For me, the question has always been how I can critique a view of someone's life and history. It's not a genre I have even grazed near because I just didn't know how to handle it. That was until The Problem Drinker, which offered me a unique approach. I had access to the subject and pitched that we have a drink to have a real conversation instead of a typical interview. Describing The Problem Drinker isn't an easy task because it feels like a snapshot of who a human being is. Kyle is brutally honest about himself, his world, and everything in it. There is a level of authenticity to how he writes this debut. Kyle is a problem drinker, not someone who is struggling with drinking. In the book, it's treated like a pastime or just a natural part of his life. But all around it is turmoil, heartache, and life itself. Between large life events, Kyle opens up his own rib cage to let the reader understand him a bit better. I have been lucky enough to befriend Kyle after being introduced to him by his girlfriend, CJ Leede, who is a character in the book. I have interviewed and spoken to CJ many times, so going from her book Headlights straight into this was a unique experience. You can feel Kyle, as a character in her book, in the most loving homage to her partner. But in The Problem Drinker, you get a real look at what love is. How love is formed in ordinary and everyday life, while never feeling mundane. The way Kyle writes about the people he loves is why this book is going to stick with me for some time. This conversation ranges from music to food to drinking stories, and everything in between that makes us human. It is an open and honest conversation that works as a companion piece to the incredible book. Make sure you check out the short film as well! About The Problem Drinker Kyle Kouri's debut non-fiction collection is full of 'whiskey courage' staring at the abyss of family, writing rejection, relationships, and his own drinking. From hijinks at AWP to hustling in the movie business, Kouri bridges the gap in drama between indie and horror. At turns hilarious and heartbreaking, The Problem Drinker is the story of an artist living with another artist, yearning to move the needle in his career, amidst a sea of personal tragedies and comedies. If F. Scott Fitzgerald had one foot in the 2020s horror scene, that's the spirit of Kouri's caustic and big-hearted, lush and refreshingly candid debut. About Kyle Kouri Kyle Kouri is an award-winning actor, writer, filmmaker, and producer. He received his MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, where he served as the online arts editor for the Columbia Journal. He is the co-founder of Slashtag Cinema, a film production company.

This week on Sober Awkward, Vic chats to James Swanwick about high-functioning drinking, success, pressure and the growing movement of people choosing to live alcohol free — not because they've completely fallen apart, but because they simply feel better without it.James is an Australian stop drinking expert, author, investor, entrepreneur and former SportsCenter anchor on ESPN. He is the creator of stop drinking organisation, Alcohol Free Lifestyle, which helps business owners and executives finally break free from alcohol without AA, rehab or willpower. Together, Vic and James unpack the myth that alcohol problems only affect people at “rock bottom” and explore why high achievers often struggle silently for years. They chat about identity, pride, social pressure, parenting, masculinity, success and why being outwardly functional can actually make it harder to admit something isn't working. They also explore a really interesting question:Can giving up alcohol sometimes be less about “having a problem”… and more about choosing a different lifestyle entirely?Plus there's chat about celebrity alcohol brands, the rise of the alcohol-free movement, Gen Z turning away from booze and why many people are beginning to realise that alcohol may be taking far more than it gives. This episode is for anyone who's ever wondered:“Do I actually need to wait for things to get worse before I make a change?”Enjoy!Find James' work here - IG: https://www.instagram.com/jamesswanwick/FB: https://web.facebook.com/AlcoholFreeLifestylehttps://web.facebook.com/JamesSwanwickOfficialYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@AlcoholFreeLifestylehttps://www.youtube.com/@JamesSwanwickTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jamesswanwickSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5253hMZWPlEWj6AVodbkC7Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alcohol-free-lifestyle/id1518416850X: https://x.com/jamesswanwickAFL Website: https://alcoholfreelifestyle.com/

Pod Jam 2024: Pops on Hops Friend Exchange (New York Funk Exchange and Able Baker Brewing) and Bonus: LIVE from Stand Up! Pod Jam 2025: Neon Desert Challenge (the latter of which he also produced for us!). Give his previous appearances some love; they are a lot of fun!Nick, in part, chose to assign us this album because of Abigail's beef with He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince as displayed in Jukebox: He's the Drinker, We're the Talkers (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Evil Genius Beer Company). Coincidentally, this album reminded Abigail of a different Derek Hummel, Sr., Jukebox selection, Make Yourself by Incubus, as discussed in Jukebox: Make Your Flight (Incubus and Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Co.).Both DJ Cut Chemist and MC Chali 2na left Ozomatli after this album because their other group, Jurassic 5, was blowing up.We found a great blog with additional information about and clips of Nick's favorite “trumpet battle” between Wynton Marsalis and Trombone Shorty at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2009. Evidently, trumpet battles have been going on for over 100 years!Watch Chali 2na and New Orleans-based jazz band Naughty Professor perform Cut Chemist Suite live at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2018!Oh look, more self-promotion! These two latter albums are both among Abigail's top five favorite albums we've ever reviewed, as revealed in our Pops on Hops Hot 100 Special!Super Bowl Sundae contains a sample that sounds very similar to a sample previously discussed on the podcast: Hip Hop Dancer's Theme by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince samples Peter Piper by Run-D.M.C., which sampled Take Me to the Mardi Gras by Bob James.Abigail plugged The Manifesto (feat. In this deeply personal episode of What Would They Say, we step into Megan's real-time experiment - one that questions not just alcohol, but the habits we rarely examine. This is not a rock-bottom story. There are no dramatic turning points or life-altering consequences. Instead, it's the story of a “grey area” drinker - someone whose relationship with alcohol looks normal on the surface, but no longer feels aligned underneath. Through an honest reflection on habits, social conditioning, and the subtle creep of routine, we explore how alcohol can shift from celebration to default. This episode unpacks how something that once felt like a choice can quietly become a pattern that no longer serves. Blending personal storytelling with science, we dive into the research behind alcohol's impact on the brain and body, especially for women, and why moderation doesn't work for everyone. Inspired by voices like Sarah Rusbatch, Jolene Park, Catherine Grey and Andrew Huberman, this episode reframes the narrative. At its core, this is a “scientific experiment”: what happens when alcohol is removed entirely? What replaces it? And what becomes possible in its absence? This episode isn't about telling you what to do. It's about normalising a different choice. One rooted in presence, self-trust, and the possibility that life might feel richer, clearer, and more intentional on the other side.

Thoughts from the Ice-Drinker's Studio: Essays on China and the World (Penguin Classics, 2023) brings together a newly translated selection of pre-eminent public intellectual Liang Qichao's most influential writings, spanning the many phases of his life: his early political awakening in the final decades of the Qing dynasty, his exile in Japan after the failed 1898 reforms, and his later reflections in the 1920s as China struggled to imagine a modern future. Translated by Peter Zarrow, the essays collected here show Liang wrestling — sometimes urgently, sometimes with less certainty — with questions of citizenship, self-government, national identity, freedom of thought, women's rights, democracy, and what it meant for China to pursue “progress.” Together, they offer a vivid portrait of a thinker trying to reinvent not only political institutions but also reimagine a new kind of society. This translation will appeal to readers of modern Chinese history, intellectual history, and anyone curious about how Chinese thinkers grappled with modernization and the challenge of national reinvention. It is also wonderfully suited for classroom use. The translations are precise, highly readable, and accompanied by clear but unobtrusive notes, making Liang's complex ideas accessible to students encountering him for the first time. Stonewell (the D stands for Dinosaur) discuss Drinker, a dinosaur that's actually now called Nanosaurus and was absorbed into that genus alongside Othnielosaurus and Laosaurus but hey, “Drinker” will get more clicks so here it is! We live in a capitalistic tar pit that we can never escape, folks. From the Late Jurassic, this 9-foot neornithischian had an interesting taxonomical history as our paleontological knowledge of it increased over the decades, and there is absolutely nothing else interesting about it. Seriously, look at this thing! It's so boring! I need a drink just looking at it. Song at the end by one of our future overlords Suno AI, while the rest of this episode is, as you probably expected by now, 100% improvised. Now you need a drink, I bet. Molly dives into how shifting from automatic drinking to intentional, mindful drinking has been the cornerstone of her transformation. She also introduces her brand-new mini-program, Just One More, designed to help you rewire the "binge brain" for vacations, weekends, and parties where overdrinking used to sneak in.If you're looking for inspiration and actionable strategies to rethink your relationship with alcohol, you won't want to miss this episode.Key Takeaways:Intentionality over Autopilot: Molly explains how she shifted from drinking mindlessly to making conscious, purposeful decisions about alcohol.Alcohol as an Option, Not a Solution: She no longer uses alcohol to solve problems or enhance experiences — vacations and celebrations are about the moments, not the drinks.Freedom Through Planning: Rather than feeling restrictive, planning her alcohol consumption ahead of time actually brings freedom and protects her long-term goals.New Program Launch! In this episode kicking off Alcohol Awareness Month, Molly Watts dives into the subtleties of emotional drinking, helping listeners uncover unconscious patterns and build emotional resilience to disrupt them. Drawing inspiration from an episode by Corinne Crabtree on emotional eating, Molly makes powerful parallels to alcohol habits many listeners may not even recognize as emotionally driven. What You'll Learn in This Episode:A clear definition of emotional drinking—and why it may not look like you expect. How seemingly harmless habits, like a nightly glass of wine, might actually reflect emotional needs. Why emotional drinking is more about mental load and reward beliefs than willpower. How subtle daily rituals become signals of self-worth and stress relief. The truth about shame cycles, secrecy, and the false binary of being either “good” or “bad” with alcohol. The connection between alcohol and emotional regulation, and how to begin shifting the cycle.Key Concepts Discussed:Emotional drinking doesn't require drama—if you're using alcohol to relax, cope, or mark the end of the day, emotions are involved.Emotional resilience is foundational—not just for changing your drinking, but also for improving your relationship with yourself.Common beliefs like “I deserve this” or “this is my time” are tied to deeper unmet needs. The parallels between secret eating and emotional drinking: both serve as a way to signal “I matter.”Mentioned in This Episode:Sunnyside App – A science-backed tool Molly recommends that focuses on:Pre-commitment and intention settingConscious interference through trackingPositive reinforcement with coaching support Try Sunnyside Free for 15 DaysLosing 100 Pounds with Corinne PodcastPowerful Quote:“If you're pouring a drink to shift emotional gears—whether to relax, reward, or disconnect—you are emotionally drinking.
