We've got some unapologetic lady-power Americana! We saw The Flying Vees open for a band down in Philly and we were hooked within half a song. Tight harmonies, filthy guitar, and killer keys made for a set that left us wanting more. The Flying Vees are a bonafide supergroup composed of four seasoned musicians of varied backgrounds. Brechyn Chace (vocals), Shannon Vasile (vocals), Caitlin Ramsey (keys) and Hannah Taylor (guitar/vocals) joined forces in 2020 to create their unique brand of wry, gothic, harmony-heavy Americana. Lovers of punk, country, folk, and maudlin, sad-girl caterwauling will be equally at home at a The Flying Vees show.We can't wait to share their music and hear the stories behind them. As some of you might have noticed, there's been a bit of a break between podcast releases. I know you will understand why when I explain that I've been facing some incredibly challenging circumstances, with one of my daughters being taken seriously ill and hospitalised for several months. At one point, I thought I'd simply shut down Choose Sunrise as life really did feel just too difficult. However, I'd just entered into a new collaboration with Andy Mee of the Alcohol Free Drinks Company and this episode's guest, Hannah Taylor, of the Sober Butterfly Collective. Between them, they persuaded me to go ahead with an event that we had planned to launch our new collaboration. “We'll do everything,” they said, “all you have to do is turn up.” I cannot tell you how moved and inspired I have been by their kindness. Attending the event and seeing how many people out there we can help and what a difference we can make in the world gave me a much needed boost, and I can honestly say that it's put the spring back in my step after a month of feeling overwhelmed and sad. That's why I have decided to keep going and continue with this work, albeit perhaps at a slightly more sedate pace, because I honestly believe it is my vocation. I also believe that the guest for this episode, Hannah Taylor, has found her calling in life, too! Hannah is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met. Using her own experience of what it's like to socialising sober, she's developed a network of volunteers called the Sober Butterfly Collective that organise face to face sober meet-ups, completely free of charge, up and down the UK. It's astonishing what this young woman has achieved without ever receiving a penny for all her hard work, because, in her own words, “Friendship is free”. I have found this so inspiring that I have decided to become her first ever sponsor, donating a minimum of £50 to the Sober Butterfly Collective for every course and every accreditation sold. Because friendship is free. If you'd like to know more about the work we do, head to hello@choosesunrise.co.uk You can find out more the Sober Butterfly Collective at https://soberbutterflycollective.com/ or on Instagram

British wrestler Hannah Taylor is a filmmaker, and a World War II history buff (thanks to her father), and made a short film about Auschwitz. Hannah took a small camera crew to Auschwitz, and describes what she observed and learned about the largest of the German operated concentration camps, and the horrific ways the regime abused, tortured, and exterminated those forced to inhabit it. She also talks about the rise and fall of the Third Reich, their imagery and propaganda, and what happened to many of the high-ranking officers after Germany fell to the Allied nations. Plus, Hannah shares some of the remarkable survivor stories and tales of resilience she encountered while making her short film.

When I say the word HOSPITALITY or When someone asks if you would host an event or there's the need or expectation to have someone over for dinner or someone spontaneously wants to stop by…. how does that make you feel? I'm not sure how these situations may trigger you, but I can say that in the past I have been very BURNT OUT on hospitality when it comes to others visiting or staying with me or even hosting dinners.

The second instalment in my Bounce Bangers series! Enjoy!
Dave Cope & the Sass put out a self-titled album in 2019 with a supergroup of Philly area musicians Dave Cope, Fred Berman, Ethan Rider, Darryl Preston Hill, Alexandra Cutler-Fetkewicz, Sarah Biemuller, and Hannah Taylor which is filled with great danceable tunes inspired by classic artists from the 60s and 70s like the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, Bowie, Slade and more. While their lineup has evolved a little over the last year due to the nature of being a working musician in the city and having many obligations to juggle, the current live band lineup includes Dave Cope, Fred Berman, Darryl Preston Hill, Sarah Biemuller, Andy Keenan and John Cunningham. In this interview we talk about a ton of things including Dave Cope's evolution as a singer-songwriter from a more folk-y solo style and his growth over the years into different styles and genres of music. He talks about working with veteran Philly drummer Fred Berman to develop the songs which would end up as part of Dave Cope & the Sass album tracks, and how they were handpicked and came together over months and years of work. Dave and Sarah talk about some of their influences including 90s music and culture, and some other side projects they're working on as well. PLUS, we get some surprises from Dave Cope's past! You'll have to listen to the episode to hear them all!
In the gripping conclusion of Dan and Jesse's conversation (which starts with the sentence "Ok, so where were we?"), Jesse details the end of days for The Point, and the growing of Point Entertainment, and their relationship with venues like the Keswick Theater, Ardmore Music Hall, and Locks at SONA. Jesse even talks a bit about his musical project with Hannah Taylor, and how he doesn't like to use his job as a promoter to get special treatment as a musician (unless it's to open for Delbert McClinton).

Dan and Dave talk about Dave's massive catalog of music, his long journey as a songwriter and performer, and how Debussy was right when he said that it's a great life to be a musician, but a crummy job. From his studies of South Indian Classical tradition to his embracing the pop song in so many of it's forms, Dave Cope is a writer and musician who likes to break up his own patterns and see what shakes out. His newest LP, 'Dave Cope and the Sass', is out now everywhere you get music. Episode image created by Hannah Taylor
