Irene Yoo's groundbreaking book Soju Party just won a James Beard Award for teaching Americans to drink like Koreans—the rounds, the rules, the anju, all of it. It's a big topic to cover, and we get into the soju tornado, the convenience-store hangover industrial complex, and how a pop-up turned into Orion Bar, the Bushwick bar she co-owns with her husband and cocktail collaborator, Nick Dodge. Mawmas, while Snooki is in recovery mode from major surgery, our besties have left us another gift. A guide to the 2000s, with an all-inclusive flash back leaving us yearning for a time long ago (not that long though, we’re not that old). First, our besties are protesting the long, overheated summer. It’s time for the holidays! Speaking of sweaty summers, the two talk hygiene routines: it’s morning vs. evening showers. Then we’re on a wild ride to the past. Long before soul cycle, we had tanning salons for community, where befriending the receptionist was the key to your social life. It’s a mystery how we didn’t damage our skin and yet we’re claimed to be the youngest looking generation. After baking all day in the artificial sun and spa, we hit the parking lots, chain smoking and cranking CDs, pregaming on cheap jet fuel by the names of Cisco and Four Loko to get our nights going and save a few dollars. We were broke back in the day, and this was before $30 cocktails. The best part? The after party…at your local Mickey D’s…Taco Bell, Burger King, and White Castle. Why choose? And no 2000s tour is complete without a book club read from our favorite adopted Chilean author…Snooki Polizzi’s Confessions of a Guidette. The ULTIMATE guide to Y2K fashion era including tacky jewelry, four inch heels (minimum), and what it means to be a Meatball. VolumeSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Imagine going alcohol-free in a country where wine is heritage, champagne is identity, and the only framework anyone has ever offered you is either you're an alcoholic or you're fine. That's the world Lorraine was living in when she started her Dry January four years ago in Paris, and decided this time to actually ask herself why she was drinking rather than just white-knuckling a month off. What she found on the other side of that question completely changed her life, and now she's building something that didn't exist in France even two years ago: a real alcohol-free movement, with a daily flood of LinkedIn haters to prove it's working. We go deep into: the French moderation myth, the idea that sophisticated social drinking is somehow different from the drinking culture everywhere else, and why the real question to ask yourself has never been "do I have a problem" but "is this bringing me closer to the life I actually want to build?" We also talk about how Lorraine built her alter ego, Lolita, as a way to step into audacity when fear and self-doubt were still running the show, and why that concept is one of the most powerful tools for anyone trying to grow into a version of themselves they haven't fully met yet.   IN THIS EPISODE:  Why France has one of the most entrenched drinking cultures in the world and what makes it so hard to question The binary trap: either you're an alcoholic or you have no problem, and why the gray zone is where most people actually live What it felt like to go to parties sober in Paris and observe human behavior around alcohol for the first time The Matrix concept Lorraine shares with her clients and how to use it to step outside the cultural programming The neuroscience: cortisol spikes, amygdala activation, and why the day after drinking keeps you stuck in autopilot mode How she built her alter ego Lolita to launch her business when she still didn't fully believe she could The alcohol-free movement emerging in France right now, and why she keeps posting through the haters   Find Lorraine on Instagram: @thefrenchsober  Join over 20,000 souls who tune into weekly newsletters on the competitive advantage you get alcohol-free. In this episode of Love Sober Podcast, Kate talks with Victoria Vanstone, founder of Sober Awkward, writer, podcaster and author of A Thousand Wasted Sundays. Victoria shares her journey from Reading pub culture and wild backpacking years (including blowing off part of her finger with a firework) through motherhood, anxiety and the moment she realised she could “step off the roundabout” and choose a sober life. Kate and Victoria explore people‑pleasing, self‑abandonment, ADHD and rejection sensitivity, perimenopause and midlife rage, and how sobriety becomes a messy, beautiful “welcome mat” back home to yourself. Growing up in Reading pub culture, wild backpacking years and a Millennium firework accident that blew off part of her finger – Victoria Vanstone always wore chaos as a badge of honour. Motherhood, anxiety and Sunday shame finally brought her to a quiet rock bottom: “I just can't f*cking do this anymore.” We talk about people‑pleasing, self‑abandonment, ADHD and rejection sensitivity, perimenopause, and why sobriety is the most interesting thing she's ever done. Plus: social pivots in midlife, sober retreats in Thailand, the chicken dance, and rediscovering childlike joy without alcohol. Step into Episode 206 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Rick Miller of RLM Hospitality to talk about what really happens when a lifelong restaurant operator shifts from running the floor to helping restaurant groups understand their numbers. From growing up in Scottsdale and building his career in New York and Austin to returning to Arizona to launch RLM, Rick shares the experiences that shaped his views on hospitality, leadership, profitability, and quality of life. This conversation goes deep on the realities many operators avoid: late P&Ls, weak AP processes, unclear prime cost, hidden third-party delivery fees, and the risks of running a business by just looking at cash in the bank. Delo and Rick also unpack restaurant culture, training, sobriety, and why cutting costs the wrong way can damage service and become “a formula to go out of business.” If you're a restaurant owner, operator, finance leader, or hospitality entrepreneur, this episode delivers practical perspective on building a stronger and more sustainable business.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:16 - 2:15) Intro, the Foodist Awards, and Why Hospitality Community Still Matters(2:26 - 5:24) Scottsdale Roots, New York City, and Falling in Love with Restaurants at Craft(5:25 - 8:06) Austin, Big Restaurant Projects, Marriage, and Life Changes(8:07 - 12:20) Hospitality Lifestyle, Drinking Culture, and Choosing a Better Path(12:21 - 15:34) Leadership, Financial Knowledge, and Why Culture Drives Restaurant Success(15:35 - 17:36) What RLM Hospitality Does and How Restaurant 365 Fits In(17:37 - 20:13) Weekly Soft Closes, Prime Cost, and Getting Financials on Time(20:14 - 21:58) Ideal Clients, White-Glove Implementation, and Restaurant Accounting Support(21:59 - 26:00) Low-Hanging Fruit, Bad AP Processes, Profit Leaks, and Profitability Gains(26:01 - End) Fit, Change Management, and Building Month-to-Month Client Partnerships

In this episode of the Sober Motivation Podcast, Brad sits down with Ashton to talk about sobriety, party culture, and what happens when alcohol becomes tied to identity, confidence, and belonging. Ashton shares how growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa normalized drinking as a “rite of passage,” and how a chaotic childhood shaped his ability to adapt—but also made real attachment and emotional safety difficult. He opens up about using alcohol and cocaine to socialize, manage anxiety, and feel confident—until the consequences caught up. This conversation goes deep into shame, anger, trauma, public backlash, mental health, and the moment Ashton realized alcohol wasn't the real problem—it was the tool he used to avoid what needed healing. He also explains the recovery shift that made sobriety stick: rebuilding discipline, changing environments, and addressing the physiology of recovery (dopamine, nervous system regulation, gut health, blood sugar, genetics, brain fog). If you're sober curious, trying to stop drinking, stuck in “weekend-only” drinking, or rebuilding after regret—this episode is a real blueprint for growth. ---------------- Links: Ashton on IG: https://www.instagram.com/ashtonpienaar/ Support The Podcast: https://buymeacoffee.com/sobermotivation

In this episode of Uncommon Sense, I'm calling out a problem no one wants to confront: the normalization of partying, drinking, and casual sex especially among so-called “conservative influencers.”You cannot claim to defend Western Civilization while publicly celebrating the very behaviors that destroyed past civilizations. Conservatism without morality is just aesthetic rebellion. We don't need more clout, cocktails, or compromised values. We need a return to godliness, self-discipline, and moral responsibility because the future generations watching us will inherit whatever standard we tolerate today. If we want to save the West, we have to get serious about being truly Christian again.--https://www.bible.com/

But in a modern, high-performance environment, is that culture quietly doing more damage than good?On this episode of The KimAppa Show, Jarrod Kimber and Robin Uthappa unpack whether alcohol-centric team cultures can become toxic — blurring professionalism, affecting preparation, and potentially stunting player development. They explore where the line lies between camaraderie and complacency, and why elite sport increasingly demands sharper off-field standards. The discussion also touches on the recently reported incident involving Harry Brook at a bar, including the presence of a bouncer, and how moments like these quickly become lightning rods for wider debates about accountability, scrutiny, and the pressures faced by young stars in the public eye.Rather than judging individuals, Jarrod and Robin zoom out to examine what these flashpoints reveal about leadership, expectations, and whether English cricket's long-romanticized “boys' club” culture still fits the demands of the modern game.-You can buy my new book 'The Art of Batting' here:India: https://amzn.in/d/8nt6RU1UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1399416545-To support the podcast please go to our Patreon page. https://www.patreon.com/user?u=32090121. Jarrod also now has a Buy Me A Coffee link, for those who would prefer to support the shows there: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jarrodkimber.Each week, Jarrod Kimber hosts a live talk show on a Youtube live stream, where you can pop in and ask Jarrod a question live on air. Beer, bonds, and belonging in Denmark. In Denmark, alcohol isn't just a drink—it's a social shortcut. From Friday bars to school parties, booze is woven into daily life in ways that can shock newcomers. For internationals, it can feel like you have to drink just to make friends, join in at work, or even learn the language. But is that really true? And how do you handle it if you'd rather not? In this episode, Derek, Mike, and guest comedian Dharkshika Christopher share stories, stats, and laughs about drinking culture, social pressure, and why you don't need to be drunk to feel at home in Denmark.Instagram post of Derek opening a beer bottle skillfully: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DO3OFj8jF7_/Dharkshika Christopher:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dharshika.christopherFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/DharshikaChristopherComedyTickets: https://upfestival.dk/om/komikere/dharshika-christopherDerek Hartman:Instagram: https://instagram.com/derekhartmandkYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/robetrottingTikTok: https://tiktok.com/@derekhartmandkFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/robetrottingMike Walsh:Instagram: https://instagram.com/phillymike999
