The latest episode of The Sun Devil Source Report Podcast concludes an offseason series that has been a little different from our normal podcasts. We have been providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches. The ninth and final episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce. The former NFL linebacker is entering his first season as co-defensive coordinator and third on head coach Herm Edwards’ staff. He and co-coordinator Marvin Lewis will take over the ASU defense after New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales led Herm Edwards’ defense the past two seasons. During his nine-year NFL career, Pierce played 137 regular season games (and seven playoff games) with the Washington Redskins (2001-04) and New York Giants (2005-09). Pierce captained the Giants' defense for five seasons, including 2007 when he helped anchor the championship team that upset the previously undefeated New England Patriots for a victory in Super Bowl XLII. A native of Long Beach, Calif., Pierce played college football at the University of Arizona after beginning his college career at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, California. He worked alongside Edwards as an NFL analyst at ESPN for much of the last decade. He was the head coach of Long Beach Poly High School from 2014-2017, leaving the team to join Edwards at ASU as linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. In this podcast, Pierce describes his expanding role on ASU’s coaching staff and assesses the team's personnel on the defense. He also talks extensively about recruiting.

We are providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches. The eighth episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU first-year offensive coordinator Zak Hill. Hill, who is implementing a new offensive scheme for the Sun Devils, takes over the ASU offense led by sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels. He spent the previous four seasons with Boise State as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Hill joined Boise State after leaving Hawaii, where he was named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in December 2015. Prior to that, Hill served as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Eastern Washington for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. Hill was a record-breaking quarterback at Central Washington from 1999 to 2003. He broke more than 20 league records and passed for 8,882 career yards and 76 touchdowns while completing 60.2 percent of his passes. In this podcast, Hill explains the offensive philosophy that he brings to Tempe and gives his perspective on the personnel he will be working with in his first season, including some details on Daniels and the challenges ahead for the team’s skill players, particularly its wide receivers.

We are providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches. The seventh episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU co-defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. The veteran coach, with over 25 years of NFL coaching experience, is in his first year as a full-time coach under head coach Herm Edwards. He joined the program prior to the 2019 season as a special advisor to Sun Devil Devil Football and most recently served as the team's interim defensive backs coach during ASU’s victory over Florida State in the 2019 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. He was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 16 seasons, the longest tenure of any head coach in franchise history, and holds the franchise record for career wins (131), playoff appearances (seven) and division titles (four). Lewis and co-defensive coordinator Antonio Pierce will take over a defense that was led by current New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales over the two seasons. In this podcast, Lewis gives his thoughts on the defensive personnel he’s inherited and discusses how ASU’s new defensive scheme will be similar to the defenses he led during his NFL career. The latest episode of The Sun Devil Source Report Podcast continues an offseason series that is a little different from our normal podcasts. We are providing our audience with a bit of a treat in the form of interviews that Sun Devil Source publisher Chris Karpman conducted with Arizona State assistant coaches. The sixth episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU first-year defensive backs coach Chris Hawkins, who is believed to be ASU’s youngest-ever position coach in the modern era. Hawkins was just 24 when hired by Sun Devil head coach Herm Edwards in late December. He previously worked as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, USC, where he worked with defensive backs after playing in the secondary for the Trojans from 2014-17. While at USC, Hawkins played his first season at cornerback before moving to safety for the next three seasons. He totaled 234 tackles, four interceptions and six passes defended in 36 career starts for the Trojans. Following last season, ASU lost three-year starting cornerback Kobe Williams, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Even so, the Sun Devils do return a veteran group to their secondary, led by senior cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Jack Jones, senior safety Evan Fields and junior safety Aashari Crosswell. In this podcast, Hawkins provides his initial thoughts on the experienced talent he has inherited throughout the team’s defensive backfield, including what it will take for some of his key players to elevate their level of play in pursuit of all-conference status and their NFL aspirations.

The fifth episode of this series is from Karpman's recent conversation with ASU first-year offensive assistant coach Derek Hagan, who works with tight ends and wide receivers. As you'll hear, Hagan discusses how important it was for the wide receivers and tight ends to get seven practices in during spring ball before the coronavirus halted ASU’s spring program. Hagan is entering his second season under Herm Edwards, and first as a full-time position coach. He was hired to Edwards’ staff in April of 2018 as an offensive analyst. He played wide receiver for the Sun Devils from 2002-05, when he appeared in 50 games across four seasons and finished his career as one of the most successful receivers in school and conference history. Following last season, ASU lost its starting tight end Tommy Hudson to graduation and saw reserve Jared Bubak announce his transfer to walk-on at Nebraska, where he grew up. Sophomore tight end Nolan Matthews played quite a bit last year and appears to be in line to lead the position group. Matthews and senior wide receiver convert Curtis Hodges are the only two returning scholarship tight ends on the roster and will be joined by high school signees Jake Ray and Ryan Morgan before the start of this season. The former ASU standout also gave perspective on why he decided to get involved with coaching.

Each has one season of immediate eligibility. ASU started two then-true freshmen on the offensive line last year (Dohnovan West and LaDarius Henderson). How well did they play given their circumstances and why should they have never been put in that situation? Christensen had a lot of thoughts on that as well.
