In this latest episode of The Sun Devil Source Report Podcast: Unfiltered, host Max Madden is joined by site publisher Chris Karpman and staff reporter Jack Harris to break down Arizona State’s 31-29 loss to Oregon and elimination from the Pac-12 South race. On the episode, which was recorded while the gang drove back from Eugene to Portland following the game, the trio discusses: -- The Sun Devils’ failed comeback against the Ducks -- The play of ASU’s young defense, which included a first career start from freshman safety Cam Phillips -- How senior quarterback Manny Wilkins will be remembered now that he will finish his ASU career without a Pac-12 title -- ASU’s upcoming regular season finale in the Territorial Cup against Arizona next Saturday
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Max Madden, and Mason Kern as they review Arizona State's 31-28 victory over UCLA on Senior Day. With the win, ASU improved its overall record to 6-4 and 4-3 in Pac-12 play to secure bowl eligibility and seal a sweep of the Pac-12's Los Angeles schools for just the fifth time in program history. Discussed on this episode of the podcast: -- An update on the latest with ASU football recruiting -- A breakdown of ASU’s key plays that helped the team notch a win in ASU’s final game at Sun Devil Stadium in 2018 -- How the Sun Devils needed to rely on sophomore tailback Eno Benjamin -- The impressive performance of senior quarterback Manny Wilkins in his last game in Tempe -- The impact of Sun Devils’ junior wideout N’Keal Harry evaluation of how Danny Gonzales’ defense competed against a UCLA offense that was led by graduate-transfer quarterback Wilton Speight -- How the Pac-12 did as a whole in Week 11, what the win did in the Pac-12 South race, and a basketball discussion about ASU’s first three games
Breakdown (75 Minutes) Ralph Amsden and Chilly discuss Arizona State's 31-28 win over UCLA, and attempt to address the following questions: Should ASU be satisfied with Bowl Eligibility? What are the chances ASU wins the Pac-12 South? How did Cam Phillips and Evan Fields look filling in for Demonte King and Jalen Harvey? Was Merlin Robertson's targeting call fair? Why Is Brandon Ruiz struggling? Is Eno Benjamin Arizona State's best RB ever? How can ASU duplicate UCLA's Tight End Production? Is Danny Gonzales the coach of the future? Finally, Ralph and Chilly discuss the legacy of Manny Wilkins and N'Keal Harry.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Mason Kern, and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 38-35 win over USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum last Saturday. ASU's (4-4, 2-3 Pac-12) win in Southern California was not only its first road victory of 2018 but also snapped USC (4-4, 3-3 Pac-12) coach Clay Helton’s career undefeated home record of 19-0. In evaluating the Sun Devils' win over their Pac-12 South foe, we begin the show by discussing some of the most critical plays that led to the outcome: ASU junior receiver N'Keal Harry's 44-yard touchdown catch, sophomore running back Eno Benjamin's 49-yard touchdown run to give his team a 24-7 lead, Harry's third-quarter 92-yard punt return touchdown that put the Sun Devils back in front for good, and more. How effective was ASU's offense after the team got back to the ground-and-pound style coach Herm Edwards has said he's most comfortable with? Benjamin gained 192 yards on the ground over 29 carries to go along with two touchdowns. Sun Devils' senior quarterback Manny Wilkins bounced back against USC after receiving harsh criticism following ASU's loss to Stanford two weeks ago when he failed to lead a successful two-minute drive. Wilkins completed 14-of-22 passes for 166 yards, one passing touchdown, one rushing touchdown, and one fumble lost. While Wilkins statistics don't jump out, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound quarterback also rushed nine times for 89 yards, including ASU's final touchdown of the day, a 45-yard touchdown run with just 1:23 remaining in the game. In the City of Angels, Harry, the Sun Devils' best-regarded NFL prospect, hauled in four passes for 95 yards including a jaw-dropping 28-yard one-handed catch in the fourth quarter and the 92-yard punt return touchdown. Was this game potentially Harry's most complete game in his ASU career? In the first half of ASU's win over USC, the team's defense, led by coordinator Danny Gonzales, surrendered just seven points (USC sophomore wide receiver Tyler Vaughns had an 82-yard punt return touchdown on USC's first touch of the day). However, in the first five minutes of the second half, ASU's defense yielded 14 points, as USC jumped ahead of the Sun Devils. While Gonzales' unit held USC to just seven points in the fourth quarter, including a critical fourth-and-1 stop with 10:16 remaining in the game while USC made its way down to the ASU 20-yard line. How did the defense perform in totality? Early in the game, Gonzales' defense was able to generate pressure on redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Sears who was making his first career start in place of freshman JT Daniels (concussion), but ASU was only able to produce two sacks. The unit did record five tackles for loss for a combined 32 yards. What was the impact of these negative plays? With ASU's win over USC, the Sun Devils are once again in the mix for the Pac-12 South title. What must the Sun Devils' do the rest of the way to put themselves in position to take the division? What does a win against a powerhouse program like USC at the Coliseum do for ASU's program? They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 9 and how the conference has done this season before making a quick note the addition of four-star wide receiver prospect, according to 247 Composite Rankings, Chad Johnson Jr.
Breakdown (77 Minutes) Ralph Amsden talks about Arizona State's 38-35 win over USC on his drive back to Arizona from Los Angeles. How was Arizona State able to build an early lead, withstand a third quarter charge by the Trojans, and ultimately hang on to win? What does this win mean for Arizona State's remaining 2018 slate of games, and what does it mean for Manny Wilkins legacy? Ralph Amsden also checks in with Mission Viejo QB Joey Yellen, a 2019 Arizona State commit, as well as his head coach Chad Johnson.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris, Mason Kern, and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 20-13 loss against Stanford. In evaluating the Sun Devils' (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12) fourth loss in their past five games, they begin the show by revisiting ASU's failed final drive of the game that began with 2:20 remaining in the game and ended with senior quarterback Manny Wilkins throwing a pass in the flat to sophomore running back Eno Benjamin with eight seconds left who was tackled in bounds. ASU couldn't get off a play after that as time expired. What happened on that drive that prevented Wilkins and the offense from taking a couple shots at a potential game-tying touchdown? Wilkins completed 26-of-43 passes for 353 yards, one rushing touchdown, one interception, and one fumble lost. The senior signal-caller didn't connect on some crucial plays, and couldn't lead the team into the end zone on its final drive. How did the crew evaluate Wilkins' performance in the losing effort? This was a game of missed opportunities for ASU as the Sun Devils turned the ball over three times, each time coming in Stanford territory. How much did these mistakes cost ASU? The Sun Devils got away from the ground-and-pound run game that head coach Herm Edwards has repeatedly said he wants to utilize as sophomore running back Eno Benjamin rushed only 11 times for 38 yards. Benjamin did catch five passes for 43 yards, but didn't have a carry after 6:59 in the third quarter. Why did ASU largely abandon the run game and why wasn't it more effective? The Danny Gonzales-led defense generated just one sack but did produce 12 tackles for loss and the unit only allowed 20 points. How well did the defense perform against Stanford? While the defense was able to stifle Stanford's run game allowing just 127 rush yards on 43 carries (3 yards per carry), critical penalties plagued the Sun Devils. ASU had seven total penalties for 76 yards, with each occurring on defense. How did these mistakes affect ASU's ability to keep the Cardinal off the board? They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 8 and how the conference has done this season before concluding the podcast with perspective on where the ASU program lies after seven games in the Herm Edwards' era.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 28-21 loss at Pac-12 South foe Colorado, which was then-ranked No. 21. In evaluating the Sun Devils' (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) first Pac-12 South loss of the season, they begin the show by revisiting ASU's critical fourth-and-goal play at the 3-yard-line early in the fourth quarter with ASU trailing the Buffaloes 28-21. The Sun Devils ran a fade to sophomore wideout Curtis Hodges, who couldn't haul in the touchdown. Was it the right play call there? How did the sequence of plays leading up to it impact what was called and ran? ASU and sophomore tailback Eno Benjamin seemed to have the running game working in full effect in the first half as Benjamin had 20 carries for 96 and two touchdowns. How did the offensive line and the play calling enable this? In the second half, Benjamin had eight times for just 24 yards. What changed for the Sun Devils' rushing attack and how did this contribute to ASU scoring just seven points while holding the ball for just over ten minutes in the second half? Senior quarterback Manny Wilkins was only sacked twice but both were very meaningful plays, one in the red zone with ASU trying to tie the game down 28-21 and another on ASU's last offensive drive of the game. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior from Novato, California, completed 12-of-22 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown against the Buffaloes, with long completions of 72, 40, and 30 yards on the day. How did Wilkins perform overall at Folsom Field? Colorado's sophomore wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. had quite the game with all four of the Buffaloes' touchdowns, including 13 receptions for 127 yards to go along with five carries for 13 yards. Shenault had two touchdowns as a receiver and two out of direct snaps in a Wildcat formation, and now leads the Pac-12 with 10 touchdowns on the season. Conversely, junior wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who suffered an apparent right leg injury in the third quarter on a punt return, hauled in three receptions for 63 yards and had one rush for two yards. How did the usages of both standout players differ? How much was Harry involved in ASU's game plan? The Sun Devils' defense didn't generate a sack and only forced five TFL's for a combined six yards in the losing effort. Junior quarterback Steven Montez had a nice game leading Colorado to victory, completing 23-of-33 passes for 328 yards and two touchdowns. Why couldn't ASU's defensive line get to Montez? The crew provide analysis on how Colorado's offensive line was more physical at the point of attack than ASU's front six. How did the Sun Devils' secondary fair against Montez, specifically sophomore cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Kobe Williams? Karpman further breaks down the situation involving senior linebacker Koron Crump who has decided to leave the ASU program, with hopes of regaining his explosiveness that he lost with his torn ACL. Crump is now working toward getting fully ready to take part in ASU's Pro Day. They review how the Pac-12 did in Week 6 to conclude this edition of the podcast.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's 28-21 loss at San Diego State in the team's first road game of the season. They begin the show discussing the crucial fourth-and-1 play that the ASU offense could not convert before SDSU went on an 11-play, 85-yard drive that ended with a touchdown that tied the game at 14 just before half. The crew provide a complete breakdown on ASU's offense, including an evaluation of the quarterback play from senior Manny Wilkins, sophomore wideout Frank Darby (who had a career night) and analysis on ASU's lack of a capable running game. They then analyze how ASU's defense competed, including a breakdown of why the Aztecs were so successful running the ball, most notably through junior running back Juwan Washington who finished the game with 27 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown. They discuss the physicality that SDSU showed and Karpman explains his reasoning for why ASU couldn't match it. They conclude with their perspectives on what the impact of the loss will be for a team whose schedule only gets tougher as the Sun Devils next game will come up north as they take on No. 10 Washington on Sept. 22.
In the latest episode of the Sun Devil Source Report Podcast, publisher Chris Karpman and host Rob Werner are joined by staff reporters Jack Harris and Max Madden as they analyze Arizona State's season-opening 16-13 victory over then-ranked No. 15 Michigan State. They begin the show discussing the key plays in ASU's third victory over a Top-15 team in Tempe this century. The crew provides a complete breakdown on ASU's offense, including an evaluation of the quarterback play from senior Manny Wilkins, analysis on ASU's rushing attack and how the Sun Devils' offensive line faired against a potent Michigan State defensive line. They then analyze how ASU's defense competed, including a breakdown of the Tillman and ranger positions. The crew speaks on the impact freshman linebacker Merlin Robertson (nine tackles, 1.5 sacks) as well as senior Tillman safety Jalen Harvey, who led the team in tackles with 10. They conclude with their perspectives on what the impact of a win like this against a blue-collar program like Michigan State can do for ASU's team currently and program in the future.

With an injury to quarterback Manny Wilkins hampering ASU's offensive capabilities, Kerry and Chris explain why the Sun Devils were better off starting Wilkins than his freshmen backups. Additionally, Kerry and Chris talk about ASU's tackling issues, which have become a reoccurring theme for the Sun Devils throughout the last two seasons. After diving into another outstanding special teams performance by kicker Zane Gonzalez and punter Matt Haack, Kerry and Chris take their regular swing around the Pac-12 and look at the standings and the outlook moving forward. The episode finishes up with Kerry and Chris' reviews of their favorite spots they visited in Boulder, Colorado over the weekend.
Ralph Amsden, Brett Quintyne and Chilly reflect on Arizona State's 23-20 win over UCLA to move to 5-1, and discuss what to expect in an upstart Colorado team in Boulder next week. With Dillon Sterling Cole likely to start, and Jack Smith likely to fill an emergency backup role as Manny Wilkins heals and Brady White sits out an extended period, the guys let you know what you can expect from both quarterbacks. They also discuss Brady White's debut performance.
The Sun Devils came into Saturday's matchup with their backup quarterback and as 10-point underdogs, but emerged victorious as Arizona State took down UCLA by a final score of 23-20. Redshirt freshman Brady White started in place of sophomore Manny Wilkins who missed the game with an ankle injury, and White ended up suffering a season-ending injury in the fourth quarter that leaves ASU's quarterback depth in a world of uncertainty at the halfway point of the season. 'Sun Devil Source Report' hosts Kerry Crowley and Chris Karpman are back to break down the ASU quarterback situation and talk about what options the Sun Devils have moving into their matchup with the Colorado Buffaloes. Chris and Kerry break down how ASU's special teams served as an advantage for the Sun Devils yet again against the Bruins, and explain the specific adjustments the Sun Devils made against UCLA's offense that enabled defensive success, despite having to play most of the game without Kareem Orr at cornerback. Kerry and Chris start the episode with a breakdown of why ASU's uniforms against UCLA threw them off, and finish it up with a deep dive into the Pac-12 standings and a look around the league at the midway point of the year.
Arizona State dropped its first Pac-12 road contest of the season in a 41-20 blowout loss against USC, and 'Sun Devil Source Report' hosts Kerry Crowley and Chris Karpman are back to put the defeat in perspective for the Sun Devils. Kerry and Chris talk about the loss of quarterback Manny Wilkins and what his injury means for the Sun Devils, why ASU struggled to move the ball offensively against a USC defense that had trouble with its opponents throughout the month of September, and what issues ASU will face moving forward. Kerry and Chris break down the performance of redshirt freshman quarterback Brady White who came in to relieve an injured Wilkins, discuss how ASU's tackling issues have evolved over the course of the season and why the Sun Devils failed to execute defensively against USC, and what the loss to a Pac-12 South foe means for ASU in the grand scheme of the 2016 season. Kerry and Chris wrap up the episode with a detailed look at the race in the Pac-12, with looks at some of the surprising teams of the season in Washington and Colorado.

Arizona State played in Texas for the third time in the Todd Graham era, and the Sun Devils narrowly escaped with a 32-28 victory over the University of Texas-San Antonio. ASU needed a late rally to overcome a 16-point deficit and notch its largest comeback win on the road since 2002, and Kerry Crowley and Chris Karpman break down the game, analyze why ASU dug itself into a hole early in the contest, and what adjustments the Sun Devils made to enable the team's late success. Kerry and Chris start the episode with a discussion of ASU's special teams performance in light of kicker Zane Gonzalez's outstanding performance and then discuss how Manny Wilkins performed in his first start on the road. The Sun Devil Source Report hosts analyze how UTSA's scheme impacted Wilkins' decision-making, and why the Roadrunners posed a tougher test for the young quarterback than Texas Tech. Before moving onto the defensive side of the ball, Kerry and Chris analyze freshman receiver N'Keal Harry's early success and what his NFL prospects look like. After talking Harry, Kerry and Chris highlight the two key defensive adjustments ASU made in the second half that stopped the Roadrunners in their tracks and allowed ASU to complete a comeback victory.
Ralph Amsden, Brett Quintyne and Chilly talk about Arizona State's 68-55 win over Texas Tech, and talk about how this win adjusts season expectations. The guys talk about whether Manny Wilkins has shown his entire repertoire, and discuss whether or not to credit Todd Graham for so many players that have changed positions seeing playing time.
Arizona State's offense racked up more than 650 total yards in a 68-55 victory over Texas Tech to push the Sun Devils to 2-0, and Kerry Crowley and Chris Karpman are back to break down the Sun Devils' performance in the latest episode of the 'Sun Devil Source Report.' Kerry and Chris talk about the surprising breakout performance from sophomore quarterback Manny Wilkins and whether his effort is indicative of what the Sun Devils can expect from him in the future, about the well-designed game plan of first-year offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, and about junior running back Kalen Ballage's record-setting performance. Kerry and Chris also break down ASU's defense, which used more three-man rushes than a typical Todd Graham front employs. Even when the Sun Devils opted to sit back in coverage, ASU experienced a handful of coverage breakdowns that contributed to Texas Tech scoring plays. The episode wraps up with Kerry and Chris' thoughts on the Pac-12 through two weekends of play and their quick takes on ASU's next opponent, UTSA.

The guys do a position-by-position breakdown of the week 1 performances, and discuss whether Manny Wilkins looks good enough to be in the saddle for the long haul. They also break down which recruits showed up, and what Arizona State's chances are at landing them. Last, DJ Foster made the Patriots 53-man roster, and Ralph doesn't think ASU fans should be entirely happy about that. Chilly and Brett offer their feedback on that hot take.
