American psychiatrist Stephen B. Karpman coined this social model of human interaction in 1968. It describes the roles that we take on in unbalanced social relations. Relations which lead us to take one of three roles within Karpman's triangle. These are three roles in Karpman's triangle. These are the victim, the persecutor and the saviour. And the role we take on unconsciously leads someone else to take on one of the others. Let's take the role of the victim. If I consider myself as a victim, I'm going to tend to blame my hardships on a persecutor, who I consider responsible for my misfortune or pain. What are the roles in the Karpman triangle then? What's the point of this whole theory? How does one escape from this infuriating triangle then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Learn more about Michael Wenderoth, Executive Coach: www.changwenderoth.comWho has your back at work? Do you feel like you're constantly walking a tightrope – high up, with the spotlight on you, and no net? That's how many people, including senior executives, describe their experience at work – and what led Devon McConnell, an executive coach and psychotherapist, to explore what drives that stress and burnout. In this episode of 97% Effective, host Michael Wenderoth speaks with Devon about her research and coaching work examining how key relationships at work – especially with our boss – shape stress, burnout, and performance. They discuss what individuals and organizations can do to better navigate conflict and pressure at work, and why stress is so often driven by relationships rather than workload. Devon explains attachment theory in clear, practical terms, shares techniques to help you manage relational conflict and regain a sense of agency, and offers a thoughtful look at how AI could improve feedback and reduce unnecessary workplace anxiety. You'll leave this episode with a clearer understanding of what's really driving your stress, new ways to navigate tough relationships and conflict at work —and, at a minimum, knowing that Devon and Michael will always have your back.SHOW NOTES:The trend Devon noticed in her executive coaching practice that led her to research stress and burnoutAttachment science: what it really says, why it matters across different spheres of life, and how it's often oversimplifiedWhy having key figures as safe havens enables us to explore, take risks, and perform under pressureThe dependency paradox: why being able to rely on others actually increases autonomy and independenceHow attachment science helps explain why trust—especially in leaders—is so criticalWhy your personality is not fixed: how we develop attachment strategies early in life, and how new experiences can reshape themThe connection to Amy Edmondson's work on psychological safety—and why different language (e.g., trust vs. pyschological safety) often lands better with senior executivesA leadership metaphor that resonates: the importance of being a steady pilot in turbulent conditionsHow emotional labor—not workload—is a major driver of burnout“The higher you rise, the more how you manage yourself and your relationships defines your success—and how you feel about your success”Practical tools from Devon, including:o A powerful daily question: “What conversation are you not having—and with whom?”o How to diagnose whether your boss is a primary source of your stress—and why that awareness matterso How to use the Karpman Drama Triangle to understand conflict dynamics and make small shifts to regain agencyNavigating dependency, influence, and workplace politics more effectivelyA bright spot: how AI — used thoughtfully — could improve feedback and reduce workplace stressorsWhy conflict-avoidant bosses can cause more harm than openly difficult and abusive onesDevon's latest work developing and testing an AI-enabled 360 feedback toolHow her training in psychology and therapy has shaped her work as an executive coach BIO AND LINKS:Devon Forster McConnell is an executive coach and psychotherapist who works with CEOs and senior leaders on presence, influence, conflict management, and sustaining performance under pressure. You may remember hearing about ancient Greek hero Ulysses in school lessons. He's the central character in Homer's Odyssey. As legend goes, after fighting for a decade in the Trojan war, Ulysses wandered the world for another 10 years to get back home to his wife and son. On his enforced travels, Ulysses suffered danger, adversity and loneliness throughout. Spanish psychiatrist Joseba Achotegui saw similarities in the plight of modern-day migrants. In 2003, he came up with the term ‘Ulysses Syndrome', to describe the negative feelings that such scenarios can bring on. These ordinary people often have no choice but to behave like heroes. What type of people are affected by Ulysses Syndrome? How is migration linked to Ulysses Syndrome? What are the symptoms of Ulysses Syndrome? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Min 4: "LA SUERTE: UNA SERIE DE CASUALIDADES".

Me inmovilizo. Me desgasto. Me desconecto.

Natural disasters lead to damaged property, loss of life, psychological trauma, displaced individuals and families, among other consequences. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the number of natural disasters has increased five times since 1970. Researchers from all over the whole world have dedicated their careers to studying natural disasters. And they all agree on one thing. The poorer people are, the more likely they are to suffer the consequences. There's a bitter irony to the fact that countries that have contributed the least to climate change are being hit the hardest by climate-related events.  Are there any figures to back that up? Are there differences within a single country? What about other forms of inequality? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! Reframing Mindset: A Conversation with David HigdonHave you ever noticed how most conversations about mindset feel suspiciously like Saturday Night Live's Stuart Smalley sketch—staring into the mirror, repeating, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough..."? If affirmations were a magic wand, we'd all be living our dream lives already, right?Mindset matters, but not how most mindset coaches sell it. In a recent Creative On Purpose Live episode, David Higdon (David Higdon) joined me to poke gently at prevailing myths about mindset and affirmations. Spoiler alert: Mindset follows posture, not the other way around.Mindset as Interaction, Not Just ThinkingFor David, mindset isn't merely thinking differently—it's about interacting with reality differently. You don't become confident by declaring yourself confident; you build confidence by acknowledging where you are and taking micro-steps toward becoming who you want to be. Affirmations only stick when they're rooted in your current reality. "I am becoming confident" beats "I am confident" if confidence isn't yet your lived experience.Mindset Follows PostureI love how David aligns with my assertion—mindset follows posture. Your attitudes and actions shape your mindset more than your mindset shapes your attitudes and actions. This means doing the thing comes before being the thing. Want to become a better writer, coach, or human? Start acting like one.Mirror, Mirror…David shared a pivotal realization that reframed his entire approach to mindset. During a drive home from a band rehearsal in Jersey, he saw the New York City skyline and asked himself, "Why am I like this?" He collided with reality. By honestly identifying behaviors that held him back, David began removing the friction that stood between who he was and who he wanted to be.He calls this practice "looking in the mirror." It starts by acknowledging your part in situations that don't go your way. Instead of blaming the outside world—look inward. David calls this 'giving grace.' It doesn't mean accepting or ignoring your faults. It means forgiving your past self, appreciating the present you, and gently embracing the potential future you.Compassion and ResponsibilityEmpathy for others starts with empathy for yourself. David shared how learning to offer grace to himself made it easier to extend it to others, creating a virtuous cycle of compassion and accountability. But grace alone isn't enough; tough love has its place. Sometimes the greatest gift you can offer yourself is holding yourself accountable to a higher standard.Notice, Name, NavigateAs you know, my three-step framework is Notice, Name, Navigate. Notice what's happening as objectively as possible. Name the choices available. Navigate by doing the next right thing. David's similar approach starts with identifying impulses or triggers, noticing emotional responses, and choosing new ways to respond. Simple, but not easy. It's a practice—a habit.Victim, Persecutor, SaviorWe also explored Karpman's Drama Triangle. If you identify as a victim, you invite persecutors and saviors into your life. Conversely, by removing victimhood, you also remove the roles of persecutors and saviors. David suggested an intriguing possibility: once you've let go of the victim role, you might unconsciously step into the persecutor or savior roles instead. That's a danger worth noticing.Gratitude as a SuperpowerGratitude changes minds faster than affirmations. It's a scientifically proven superpower. Real gratitude means appreciating the challenges life hands you, not just the abundance. It's the secret sauce of becoming a better person and a better solopreneur.Final ThoughtMindset isn't something you “fix.” It's something you build, day by day, through conscious choices and intentional actions. The truth is, your mind doesn't need setting; it needs recalibrating through experience. So, start small, act intentionally, and trust the process. You'll become the person who can do what you aspire to do by consistently choosing actions aligned with that aspiration. What's one small choice you'll make today to move closer to the mindset you want to embody?
