Welcome back for another episode of What In Tar Nation! There has been a fair amount of news happening in the college sports universe, and amazingly some significant news surrounding Carolina athletics. There was some good news from the last couple of weeks, but unfortunately there is some troublesome news that Tanya and I dove into. In this episode we will be discussing: Carolina’s COVID-19 tests on fall sports athletes came in, and 37 players have tested positive for the virus. The impact that this will have on Carolina football, and whether or not it’s time for the ACC to have a little talk. The Ivy League being the first conference to cancel fall sports. The Black Lives Matter video that was released by the Carolina basketball program. Best/worst of the last couple of weeks. Be sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already, and please leave us a five-star review if you feel inclined to do so. However, we decided to make a comeback so that we could bring all of you a fresh new episode of our hot take podcast! In this episode we will be discussing: The ACC Tournament and when we knew that things were going to be really weird for a very long time. How sports have attempted to navigate restarting their seasons, and whether or not it would be smart for college sports to take place this calendar year. Whether or not Roy Williams will and should coach should the NCAA give the green light. UNC’s new place in college football recruiting, and how amazing it’s been to have Mack Brown back. On a quiet, COVID-19 locked-down Friday afternoon, Mack Brown and the North Carolina coaching staff secured two more commitments for the 2021 class. Host Chad Floyd and esteemed guest Jake Lawrence (@Chad_Floyd and @therealestrjl on Twitter, btw) had a brief conversation about it. There was a back-and-forth between marveling at Brown’s efforts, and talking about the merits of the newest commitments, Raneiria Dillworth (who chose the Tar Heels over Alabama) and Jared Wilson (a former Georgia commitment.) Two more scores in-state for the Tar Heels. While the state is on lockdown, is Mack Brown the new Governor? Wilson: a hyper-athletic man for 325 pounds, and how he defies the often difficult high school offensive lineman evaluation process. Dillworth: safety? Linebacker? Swiss Army Knife? How does Jay Bateman plan on deploying guys like him, Gabe Stephens, Ja’Quirious Conley, and Dontavious Nash? (Hint, its gonna be fun.) Do we play two 2021 seasons at this point? We were brief today, but we needed to laud the fact that Carolina is #2 in the country in football recruiting. If you like us, subscribe. Go Heels. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Four Corners! This podcast doesn’t really fit a specific genre, so we created a new one. Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) and esteemed guest Brandon Anderson (@THBBrandon) sort through the complete, silent, confusing chaos and talk about some random life adaptations before rounding into sports: Coffee and alcohol consumption; New hobbies, things that are missed, were taken for granted, etc.; The cruelty of an airborne virus hitting during pollen season in the South; The weirdness of covering the ACC Tournament as the world came to a stop on March 11th; A fact not previously discussed: what Carolina basketball did that Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Virginia, and most every other national contender didn’t do in 2020; How are we going to get football started on time? CAN we get football started on time? SHOULD we get football started on time? Best memes to come out of the COVID era. These are weird times, and with no actual sports to really talk about, we’re open to suggestions! Here’s hoping y’all enjoy some rambling and are staying indoors and healthy. Til next time, Go Heels! Between the Banners is back to preview the ACC Tournament! Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by Al Hood (@albhood) to break down this week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, to which Tar Heels fans have to pay attention as early as today! Discussed: The tournament, by quadrants, starting with Carolina’s: Al and Chad agree that the Heels should cruise by Virginia Tech, can they beat Syracuse again? Big, bad Louisville looms on Thursday. Virginia has to make it out of the Catholic region (yes, I realize Boston College is Jesuit). Notre Dame still intrigues Chad, as it has for the whole season. Duke should cruise through to Friday, as Wake, Pitt, and State stand in their way. Can Florida State actually pull the clean sweep on the regular season and tournament? The three “football schools” in the conference occupy the early slot on Wednesday and Thursday, and there’s probably some chaos potential. You found us, don’t lose us. Subscribe on your podcast purveyor of choice, leave us a 5-star review (speaking of 5-stars, look at Mack Brown’s recruiting) on Apple Podcasts and I’ll read it on the air! In the first three minutes of the pilot episode of the classic Netflix cartoon BoJack Horseman, the main character compares life to a good, long kick in the urethra. That...is a very apt metaphor for the North Carolina Tar Heels 2019-2020 basketball season. Jake Lawrence (@therealestRJL) and Al Hood (@albhood) and host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) try to talk through it. Discussed: The collapse down the stretch. What went wrong? Fatigue? Confidence? Coaching? We get a little deeper into coaching. At some point, what does Roy Williams do with a roster that has been so decimated by injury? How do the Heels muster up the energy to not fold in the last five minutes of a game going forward? And yes, by popular demand, we put on our #NCStateFan tinfoil hats and talk about the refs. You found us, don’t lose us. Subscribe on your podcast app of choice, leave us a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts and we will read it on the air. Even if its sad. Like this episode, no doubt, is. Is Carolina basketball back? Well, possibly, as the Heels posted two double-digit conference wins with a depleted roster. Is the Tar Heel Blog Podcast back? Yessir. Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by Akil Gurupuran (@akillesheel17) and Al Hood (@albhood) to talk about a litany of happenings in Carolina basketball, and beyond. We start on a somber note, talking about memories of the late Kobe Bryant. The obvious Michael Jordan juxtapositions hit close to home as Carolina fans, but we tried to eulogize him and put into context his passing as best we could. The win against Miami: the Brandon Robinson show takes a backseat (in our discussion, at least) to some nice things we saw from Armando Bacot and grad transfers Christian Keeling and Justin Pierce. Also, the catharsis of building a lead, maintaining a lead, and ending a long losing streak. We danced on State’s grave, through the lens of Robinson the absolute warrior, and Garrison Brooks, emerging superstar. And yes, we trashed State as a program and fanbase a little bit. Finally, we wrap by quickly discussing whether the Heels can navigate the tough back end of the schedule and get back in the NCAA Tournament discussion. Learn more about your ad choices. The 2019-2020 Carolina basketball is off to a disappointing 8-6 start, and the 13-point home loss to Georgia Tech on Saturday officially has us pressing the panic button. Welcome back to Between the Banners, the UNC basketball pod hosted by Tar Heel Blog! Host Chad Floyd is joined by Al Hood and Joe Carpenter to bemoan the issues, and try to find some positives. Discussed: Well, WTF was that Georgia Tech game? Is this roster inherently flawed, or are injuries the root of the Heels’ struggles? Can we expect anything more from Justin Pierce or Christian Keeling? What about Cole Anthony’s return? What’s the best case/worst case, and can the Heels turn it around and at least make an NCAA Tournament appearance? It’s bad right now, but it was a lively discussion and we hope you take a listen. The North Carolina Tar Heels won their first bowl game in six years, and did so handily. Carolina beat Temple by a modest score of 55-13 in the 2019 Northrup Grumman Military Bowl, so we had to talk about it! Guest Al Hood (@albhood) was on site in Annapolis for the massacre, so he graciously joined host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) to talk about what it looked like from Maryland. Discussed: The sights and sounds of the Military Bowl, Annapolis, and its small-town feel. Al’s favorite play(s) to happen right in front of him. Phil Longo’s new package for goal-line offense. Phil Longo’s ruthless “Philly Special” playcall to put the Heels up 41-6. Phil Longo’s tactful approach to padding stats, as Dyami Brown, Dazz Newsome, and Michael Carter all eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark at their respective positions. Gushing over the trajectory of Carolina’s football program as it sits right now— a time-honored tradition on this here podcast. If you like what we do, tell us! Don’t Punt to Gio is back with a vengeance, as its time to put a bow on Mack Brown’s first full recruiting class as head coach at North Carolina. Host Chad Floyd is joined by Jake Lawrence to (yet again) sing Brown’s praises for doing an admirable, if not recently-unprecedented, job of locking up a lot of the top talent in the state of North Carolina. Discussed: Bringing in the headliners, especially in the trenches. The skill position talent: we might not see the returns on it immediately, but its definitely there. How the quarterback room shapes up for the next 5 years. Way too much excitement about this defensive class. Superlatives! Highest upside, favorite player, biggest sleeper, you name it. There are approximately seven defensive players better than any Carolina has signed in the past five years in this class alone. If you like what we do, don’t be shy!
