Welcome back for another episode of What In Tar Nation! We finally got to watch some Carolina football this weekend, and they blessed us with the gift of beating down Syracuse. As always, Tanya Bondurant joined me following the game to break it all down. In this episode we will be discussing: How bad the offenses were for much of the game, and/or how great the defenses played. Javonte Williams and Michael Carter playing sizable roles in getting the offense going, and also some new plays we will see them involved in. Storm Duck showing out to open his sophomore campaign, and we ponder if he will be able to continue his success. Best/worst of the game. Be sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already, and please leave us a five-star review if you feel inclined to do so. We will be back next week with some post-game analysis of the Charlotte game and any other topics that we deem important in Tar Heel Nation. Stay safe, be kind to one another, and Go Heels! Welcome back for another episode of What In Tar Nation! There has been a fair amount of news happening in the college sports universe, and amazingly some significant news surrounding Carolina athletics. There was some good news from the last couple of weeks, but unfortunately there is some troublesome news that Tanya and I dove into. In this episode we will be discussing: Carolina’s COVID-19 tests on fall sports athletes came in, and 37 players have tested positive for the virus. The impact that this will have on Carolina football, and whether or not it’s time for the ACC to have a little talk. The Ivy League being the first conference to cancel fall sports. The Black Lives Matter video that was released by the Carolina basketball program. Best/worst of the last couple of weeks. Be sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven’t already, and please leave us a five-star review if you feel inclined to do so. However, we decided to make a comeback so that we could bring all of you a fresh new episode of our hot take podcast! In this episode we will be discussing: The ACC Tournament and when we knew that things were going to be really weird for a very long time. DPTG 34: Mack Brown Remains on a Mission

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2020 24:06

On a quiet, COVID-19 locked-down Friday afternoon, Mack Brown and the North Carolina coaching staff secured two more commitments for the 2021 class. Host Chad Floyd and esteemed guest Jake Lawrence (@Chad_Floyd and @therealestrjl on Twitter, btw) had a brief conversation about it. There was a back-and-forth between marveling at Brown’s efforts, and talking about the merits of the newest commitments, Raneiria Dillworth (who chose the Tar Heels over Alabama) and Jared Wilson (a former Georgia commitment.) Two more scores in-state for the Tar Heels. While the state is on lockdown, is Mack Brown the new Governor? Wilson: a hyper-athletic man for 325 pounds, and how he defies the often difficult high school offensive lineman evaluation process. Dillworth: safety? Linebacker? Swiss Army Knife? How does Jay Bateman plan on deploying guys like him, Gabe Stephens, Ja’Quirious Conley, and Dontavious Nash? (Hint, its gonna be fun.) Do we play two 2021 seasons at this point? We were brief today, but we needed to laud the fact that Carolina is #2 in the country in football recruiting. If you like us, subscribe. Go Heels. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Four Corners! This podcast doesn’t really fit a specific genre, so we created a new one. Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) and esteemed guest Brandon Anderson (@THBBrandon) sort through the complete, silent, confusing chaos and talk about some random life adaptations before rounding into sports: Coffee and alcohol consumption; New hobbies, things that are missed, were taken for granted, etc.; The cruelty of an airborne virus hitting during pollen season in the South; The weirdness of covering the ACC Tournament as the world came to a stop on March 11th; A fact not previously discussed: what Carolina basketball did that Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Virginia, and most every other national contender didn’t do in 2020; How are we going to get football started on time? CAN we get football started on time? SHOULD we get football started on time? Best memes to come out of the COVID era. These are weird times, and with no actual sports to really talk about, we’re open to suggestions! Here’s hoping y’all enjoy some rambling and are staying indoors and healthy. Til next time, Go Heels! Between the Banners is back to preview the ACC Tournament! Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by Al Hood (@albhood) to break down this week’s ACC Tournament in Greensboro, to which Tar Heels fans have to pay attention as early as today! Discussed: The tournament, by quadrants, starting with Carolina’s: Al and Chad agree that the Heels should cruise by Virginia Tech, can they beat Syracuse again? Big, bad Louisville looms on Thursday. Virginia has to make it out of the Catholic region (yes, I realize Boston College is Jesuit). Notre Dame still intrigues Chad, as it has for the whole season. Duke should cruise through to Friday, as Wake, Pitt, and State stand in their way. Can Florida State actually pull the clean sweep on the regular season and tournament? The three “football schools” in the conference occupy the early slot on Wednesday and Thursday, and there’s probably some chaos potential. You found us, don’t lose us. In the first three minutes of the pilot episode of the classic Netflix cartoon BoJack Horseman, the main character compares life to a good, long kick in the urethra. That...is a very apt metaphor for the North Carolina Tar Heels 2019-2020 basketball season. Jake Lawrence (@therealestRJL) and Al Hood (@albhood) and host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) try to talk through it. Discussed: The collapse down the stretch. What went wrong? Fatigue? Confidence? Coaching? We get a little deeper into coaching. At some point, what does Roy Williams do with a roster that has been so decimated by injury? How do the Heels muster up the energy to not fold in the last five minutes of a game going forward? And yes, by popular demand, we put on our #NCStateFan tinfoil hats and talk about the refs. Is Carolina basketball back? Well, possibly, as the Heels posted two double-digit conference wins with a depleted roster. Is the Tar Heel Blog Podcast back? Yessir. Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by Akil Gurupuran (@akillesheel17) and Al Hood (@albhood) to talk about a litany of happenings in Carolina basketball, and beyond. We start on a somber note, talking about memories of the late Kobe Bryant. The obvious Michael Jordan juxtapositions hit close to home as Carolina fans, but we tried to eulogize him and put into context his passing as best we could. The win against Miami: the Brandon Robinson show takes a backseat (in our discussion, at least) to some nice things we saw from Armando Bacot and grad transfers Christian Keeling and Justin Pierce. Also, the catharsis of building a lead, maintaining a lead, and ending a long losing streak. We danced on State’s grave, through the lens of Robinson the absolute warrior, and Garrison Brooks, emerging superstar. And yes, we trashed State as a program and fanbase a little bit. Finally, we wrap by quickly discussing whether the Heels can navigate the tough back end of the schedule and get back in the NCAA Tournament discussion. Learn more about your ad choices. Part deux of the basketball preview podcasts is upon us, as host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by Jake Lawrence (@therealestrjl) to run through the ACC. Shoutout to Joe Giglio of the News and Observer, as we used the linked rankings to frame our discussion. Discussed: The bottom five is really about who keeps their job, right? Brad Brownell at Clemson and Danny Manning at Wake are firmly on the chopping block. Oh, Virginia Tech is bad again. Hate to see it. Pitt: one of us thinks they’re going to surprise. No offense Joe, but Jake called you his spirit animal in one sentence and retracted it when he heard where you had Georgia Tech ranked. Chad and Jake talking themselves in circles about the top 5 in the ACC— Louisville returns the goods, but overachieved last year. Duke, UNC, and UVA? Well, two of the three have proven capable of winning the regular season title in the last decade. N.C. State, Notre Dame, and Miami: sleepers? Learn more about your ad choices. In the realm of “things that we’re really excited about that completely snuck up on us”, you wouldn’t think basketball season would be one of them! With the advent of the ACC Network, it turns out the Tar Heels tip off a WEEK from tonight, so...its probably high time we start talking about the season ahead. Host Chad Floyd (@Chad_Floyd) is joined by longtime pal Akil Gurupuran (@akillesheel17) to break down the UNC basketball roster in part 1 of a multi-part North Carolina basketball season preview. Discussed: The guys are briefly yet immediately sidetracked by some of the quirks of the new schedule, including a Virginia game on the day of the ACC Football Championship. They agree on their projected starting lineup, which saves some valuable time. Breaking down each player individually: what to expect from Cole Anthony? Christian Keeling as X-factor? Garrison Brooks’ statline will be: _____? After the break, some glowing words about Leaky Black’s potential role, and the versatility of he and Justin Pierce off the bench. We don’t know what to make of no less than five scholarship players, which isn’t great. You found us here, don’t lose us! Stephen Gosnell: its fun to steal toys from your little brother. Chad and Jake actually disagree on something! After a relaxing bye week, the Tar Heel Blog Podcast is back with episode 26 of Don’t Punt to Gio. Host Chad Floyd starts off with a few minutes of ranting and raving about the Desmond Evans commitment (more on that to come.) He is then joined by Jacob Cowden to preview the Heels’ trip to Blacksburg, and the rest of the Week 8 slate in college football. Not much on the Evans commitment, but some quick numbers on the magic of Mack Brown’s first full recruiting class at UNC, and the future of the defense. Is Virginia Tech any good? If they are, its all because of Hendon Hooker and the receiving corps. Chad and Jacob talk about how they would go about scheming for the Hokies’ offense with a depleted secondary. Has Bud Foster lost his touch? Maybe! What should we look for when the Heels have the ball? Predictions! Week 8: fairly underwhelming as a whole. Chad again identifies an Iowa State game as the most competitive of the noon slate, the 3:30 is gross outside of the one that most subscribers to this podcast will be watching, and things ramp up—kindof— after that.
