One week from today, voters in New Jersey and Virginia will go to the polls. These are state and not federal elections. But they can serve as bellwethers for the upcoming midterm election next year.Topics that resonate in a purple state like Virginia this year, for example, are likely to be issues that are significant in swing states and districts in 2026. Next Tuesday, we'll also look closely at voter turnout for some early clues as to which party is more excited to show up and vote next year.Even as our politics has become more and more nationalized, these contests in Virginia and New Jersey are also impacted by unique state and local issues and trends. And that's why we wanted to discuss these contests with two people who really understand the issues, the electorate, and parts of the state will be most important to watch on November 4th. Amy is joined by Joey Fox of the New Jersey Globe and Chaz Nuttycombe, founder and executive director of State Navigate, who's following the Virginia contests. The top five most famous alien abduction cases include the Betty and Barney Hill case (1961), the Travis Walton case (1975), the Pascagoula Abduction (1973), the Antônio Vilas Boas case (1957), and the Elizabeth Klarer case (1956). These cases are often cited for their detail, witness corroboration, or cultural impact. 1. Betty and Barney Hill (1961) This case is considered the first widely reported alien abduction in the U.S. The couple claimed they were abducted by extraterrestrials in a rural area of New Hampshire. Their story was detailed through hypnosis sessions and became the basis for the book Interrupted Journey and a television movie. 2. Travis Walton (1975) Walton, a logger, claimed he was abducted by a UFO while working with a crew in Snowflake, Arizona. His six co-workers reported seeing Walton struck by a beam from the craft and disappear. Walton was missing for five days before reappearing and recounting his story, which was later fictionalized in the film Fire in the Sky. Pascagoula Abduction (1973) Two men, Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker, reported being abducted by aliens while fishing in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Antônio Vilas Boas (1957) A Brazilian farmer, Vilas Boas, claimed he was abducted by aliens while working on his farm. He reported being taken to a spaceship, examined by the aliens, and forced into a sexual encounter with a female alien. The case is notable for the detailed and unusual nature of the encounter. 5. Elizabeth Klarer (1956) A South African woman, Elizabeth Klarer, claimed she was taken aboard a UFO by aliens from the planet Meton. She stated the aliens had an advanced civilization and were concerned about Earth's nuclear weapons. The Treasury Department is losing two of its top technology officials, according to agency sources. Brian Peretti, Treasury's chief technology officer, is leaving the position and taking the federal government's early retirement option, two people within the agency said. Peretti helped organize the department's planning process for information technology and also served in the role of chief artificial intelligence officer. Rick Therrien, Treasury's chief information security officer, is also retiring, the two agency sources said. Therrien had served in the position since July 2024, and, before then, held a series of roles at the Internal Revenue Service. The moves come amid tensions in the Treasury Department over the influence of the Department of Government Efficiency and the departures of IT officials across the federal government. The Defense Department's chief information officer said this week she's kicking off a new program that aims to overhaul cumbersome bureaucratic mechanisms and streamline its ability to rapidly approve new software capabilities for warfighters. Under the Software Fast Track (SWIFT) program, the Pentagon will use artificial intelligence to replace legacy authority to operate (ATO) and Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes when buying new software. Acting DOD CIO Katie Arrington signed a memo authorizing the new effort said and it would officially launch May 1. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. The creation of a green oasis in the heart of the city on the site of two former Coventry University buildings has been recognised with two major sustainability awards. The Green Gown Award, in the category of Nature Positive, and the Green Flag Award for Best Climate Adaption, were both won earlier this month. Coventry University demolished the Alan Berry and James Starley buildings to make way for the Peace Garden opposite Coventry Cathedral and Starley Gardens on Cox Street, transforming the spine of the campus into a green space for people and wildlife to co-exist. The Green Flag prize is considered a 'best of the best' accolade as only projects to have won prestigious Green Flag Awards earlier in the year are open for consideration. It not only recognises the creation of a vibrant green space but also its impact in the fight against climate change. The Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland. Jamie Whitehouse, Grounds and Public Realm Manager at Coventry University said, "These are major awards for the university, as they demonstrate our commitment to creating a sustainable campus that transforms the grey to the green, which is welcoming to people and wildlife. "The awards recognise the hard work of the university Grounds team and the wider Estates team in creating an exciting, relaxing, and stimulating external environment in which to live, study or work." The gardens include wildflower meadows, biodiverse-friendly planting, tree planting, informal social spaces, and a prominent sculpture by local artist George Wagstaffe. The new greenspace on the former Alan Berry site provides new stunning views of the iconic Coventry Cathedral and interconnects from either side to an edible garden, which is open to all to harvest the fruit and vegetables, as well as providing nesting and food for pollinators such as bees, flies, and butterflies. Overall, it contributes to the university's vision to create pollinator hubs and corridors. The Environmental and Grounds Team works in collaboration with academic departments, such as the Centre of Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR), and Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to deliver events like bee walks and hedgehog talks for the campus community. Professor John Latham, CBE, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University Group, said: "Winning these awards is a major achievement for the Group and a validation of our commitment to building a greener, more sustainable campus. "It underpins our ongoing dedication to working with local and global collaborators to tackle global sustainability challenges, address climate change, and create better futures for our communities." Coventry University is working hard to become net zero by 2030, a target being supported by a grant of almost £13million from the Department for Energy Security's Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The environmental benefits of this transformation are far-reaching: Reduced carbon emissions - the demolition of the buildings has eliminated significant energy consumption and associated carbon emissions. Improved air quality - the new green spaces and gardens help to absorb pollutants and improve air quality. Reduced urban heat island effect - the green spaces and gardens help to cool the surrounding area of the university Enhanced biodiversity - the project has created new habitats for wildlife and increased biodiversity. Sustainable drainage - the green spaces help to manage rainwater runoff and reduce the risk of flooding. The project has won several other awards, including the DEFRA Bees' Needs Champions Award 2023 and Bronze and Silver Hedgehog Friendly Campus Awards, and has played host to several events for Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. The money will help towards the cost of installing around 1,300 new solar panels and connecting nine Coventry University buildings to the city's district energy network. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio with lots to talk about in the USC football world, following the heartbreaking overtime loss to Penn State. The guys take one quick look back at what went wrong late in the game against the Nittany Lions before turning the page and taking a look ahead at the long road trip to take on Maryland. The Trojans are still looking for their first road victory in Big Ten conference play and the Terps are a desperate squad after getting blown out at home at the hands of Northwestern, despite being a two-score favorite. Maryland is 3-3 and haven't notched a conference victory, so this could be another field storming opportunity if the Trojans once again can't figure out a way to win. They also discuss the breaking news that both defensive end Anthony Lucas and linebacker Eric Gentry will be out for the rest of the season and what impact that could have on that side of the ball going forward. They also discuss the Penn State fan that paid to run out of the tunnel with the Trojans, Lincoln Riley announcing that the team would be leaving later than normal on Friday for the long trip to Maryland, the basketball team's first exhibition game and lots more. Employees of a multistate rehab company have been left in the dark after several facilities shut across the country following the suicides of the two top executives. Retreat Behavioral Health, which has facilities in Florida, Philadelphia and Connecticut, abruptly closed their facility in Palm Beach, Florida, last week. Employees told WPTV that around 100 mental health and substance use patients were told to pack up and leave, including 30 who had nowhere to go. Facilities in Lancaster County, PA, and New Haven, CT, have also since shuttered following the deaths of CEO Peter Schorr and CAO Scott Korogodsky. Korogodsky had taken up the leadership of the company after Schorr killed himself at his home in Delray Beach, according to LancasterOnline.
