Duke University leaves millions of dollars on the table every year by giving away free tickets to the most sought-after game in college basketball. The bizarre ticket allocation system includes weeks of camping in tents, a 58-question trivia exam, border guards with air horns at 3 AM, and a 50-page student-written constitution with its own appeals court. In this special 20th-anniversary episode, EconTalk's Russ Roberts and returning favorite Michael Munger (appearance #51!) use the legendary Duke-UNC rivalry to explore the fundamental economics question: how do you deal with a world when there isn't enough of something to go around? Along the way, they ask why a university that squeezes students on every other margin, might deliberately forgo a fortune on ticket sales. The answer has everything to do with community, belonging, and the same psychology that bonds fighter pilots and elite military units.

Goodness that was a sports weekend, wasn't it kids? Super Bowl was underwhelming but the college basketball delivered in a big way, starting on Friday night in the Big East and rolling all the way into the wee hours of Sunday morning. Right off the jump Hartzell & Norlander bring in Joe Ovies from OG Triangle Media to unpack what we all saw in Chapel Hill on Saturday; the buzzer-beater, the court-storming, and the fallout from yet another Duke/UNC classic. It always delivers, folks! What does Joe think about the Duke angle from another rare loss that happened the same way they seemingly all do, plus where the 'Heels can go from here, building off a big rivalry win. Hartzell is convinced the best game of the weekend was actually in the Big Ten between Michigan State and Illinois, plus other observations from an A+ weekend on the hardwood. And yes, there in Lindsey Vonn discussion and Bad Bunny reaction in 'Now Spinning' which is, as always, worth waiting for.
