You're listening to the Westerly Sun's podcast, where we talk about the best local events, new job postings, obituaries, and more. First, a bit of Rhode Island trivia. Today's trivia is brought to you by Perennial. Perennial's new plant-based drink “Daily Gut & Brain” is a blend of easily digestible nutrients crafted for gut and brain health. A convenient mini-meal, Daily Gut & Brain” is available now at the CVS Pharmacy in Wakefield. Now for some trivia. Did you know that Providence native, Christopher Iannetta was a professional baseball catcher. He played for the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks from 2006 to 2019. In college, he played for the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Now for our feature story: The town's teachers, school principals and administrators are analyzing the performance of each student on the Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System test with an eye toward understanding how to help them improve. Like most districts in the state, Westerly saw significant declines in the recently released results. Results of the test were released to school districts by the state Department of Education on Oct. 28. Parents should receive reports on their children in the next couple weeks. The test was administered this past spring and state officials had previously decided not to administer the test in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in grades 3-8 take the RICAS, which gauges proficiency in English and mathematics. This was the third time the test was administered in Rhode Island and is based on comprehensive assessment tests used by Massachusetts' public schools. The federal government requires states to implement standardized testing or risk losing federal funding for education. Just 36.9% percent of Westerly students achieved proficiency in the English language arts section of the test, compared to 51.8% in 2019; and just 17.7% achieved proficiency in mathematics, down from 38% in 2019. Each school in the district experienced a decline in all areas of the test with the exception of Springbrook Elementary School. Westerly students who took the test did better, on average, than their peers throughout the state. A total of 33% of Rhode Island students who took the test this year were deemed proficient in English language arts, down from 38% in 2019. Only 20% of students in the state who took the test were proficient in math, down from nearly 30% in 2019. Superintendent of Schools Mark Garceau stressed that until all Westerly students are proficient he will never be satisfied. "In any year, unless we are at 100% proficiency for all kids, it's not what I'm looking for," Garceau said. "... But in a COVID year I don't think anyone is surprised that everybody saw significant declines in ELA and mathematics." Still, Garceau said, he was concerned about the overall degree of decline in Westerly and the steep drop-off in performance on the mathematics section of the test both in Westerly and throughout the state. Garceau said: "We are investing a lot of energy in supporting our kids' social-emotional well being so they can attend to their academic learning."  About 20-25% of Westerly students remained in distance learning for the entirety of the 2020-21 school year. Rhode Island Commissioner of Education Angélica Infante-Green said the state Department of Education is working to assist school districts throughout the state to make up ground lost to the pandemic. For more about the coronavirus pandemic, the recovery, and the latest on all things in and around Westerly, head over to westerlysun.com. There are a lot of businesses in our community that are hiring right now, so we're excited to tell you about some new job listings. Today's Job posting comes from Crimmins Residential Staffing in Westerly. A couple in Watch Hill is looking for a part-time housekeeper. Pay is $35 per hour and you'll work there 3 days per week in season and one day per week during the off-season. For two years in a row, the Florida State Seminoles have upset the North Carolina Tar Heels in football. North Carolina raced out to a 10-0 lead but quickly lost hold of the initiative. From that point on they never felt like they got their feet back under them. FSU played measured, ball control football, and widdled UNC down for the rest of the game. Much of FSU's offensive production came off of a career day for quarterback Jordan Travis. He stayed patient in the passing game and took the reigns of the leader of the running game. The threat of his legs opened things up for FSU's talented stable of running backs. Jashaun Corbin and Treshaun Ward received the carries that many fans had been clamoring for and took full advantage of them. Defensively FSU seems to be getting better on a game-by-game basis. Coverage was tight throughout the game and the defensive front is continuing to prove to be one of the better fronts in the conference. They let UNC quarterback Sam Howell run for over 100 yards but ultimately Howell was unable to beat the Seminoles using his feet. There was a lot of good in this game but even coaches can't see everything on a single watch. So join the guys at the Triple Option as they rewatch one of the most complete games FSU has played in years. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

The Florida State Seminoles defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 35-25. The ‘Noles played one of the cleanest games of the season and looked like the more cohesive group throughout the game. They found a lot of their success on the ground. Quarterback Jordan Travis led the charge with 121 rushing yards on his own but runningbacks Jashaun Corbin and Treshaun Ward combined for another 129. On defense FSU held North Carolina's talented quarterback Sam Howell in check for a majority of the game. UNC was forced to find success on the ground and ultimately couldn't sustain their drives because of it. This game was a big potential stepping stone for this Florida State team. It was the most complete game they have played in Norvell's tenure and may give some confidence to the team moving forward. There was a lot to like and a lot to keep in mind for this game. Here to give their instant thoughts on tonight's performance are Kevin Little and Adam Brown. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

Florida State Football looks to ride some momentum off of their sole victory of the season into Chapel Hill on Saturday to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Neither of these teams has lived up to expectations this year. This was supposed to be a breakout year for the Tar Heels. They have had some solid recruiting classes and looked to build off the past successes of coordinators Phil Longo and Jay Bateman. Compound that with the return of Heisman hopeful Sam Howell and many believed that UNC would make a run for the ACC title. That hasn't been the case early in the season. Offense Features a lot of flexibility in their routes- there's even a rumor that there's a “get open” route in the playbook Simple reads and frequent deep shots allow Howell to showcase his strengths They lost a lot of playmakers which means that often these receivers struggle to get open Offensive line issues add to the problem which brings them towards the bottom of CFB in sacks allowed When Howell gets time it's an explosive and fun to watch offense Defense Base 3-4 Very aggressive- frequent one gapping which means the defensive line is upfield quickly Fire zone heavy- a fire zone is a 5 man pressure with a spot drop zone behind it If they get pressure they are a decent defense But if not they can struggle with underneath coverage Contain may be a problem. The mobile QB Jeff Sims for GT took advantage of their over-aggressiveness which led them to lose gap integrity. Conclusions It has been difficult to parse out this UNC team's true colors. Much like FSU, it seems like any team can show up on any given Saturday. Because of that, this game is not quite the lock that it should be when considering the fact that UNC is a much better-coordinated team with an exceptional quarterback. A lot of these things are a bit difficult to get a mental image of so that's why I provided some images myself. Let's dive into the film to get a better understanding of FSU's matchup. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support
