Additionally, she has been a beekeeper for 8 years. She actively draws insights from her studies of beekeeping and neuroplasticity, to think creatively and scientifically about solving the mysteries around pain. She has a passion for sharing what she has learned, particularly in how to support clients with long standing or confusing pain issues. Because Jessica and I cover so much, I have split this interview into 2 parts. You don't want to miss it!

Melinda plays an old Scottish tune in both G major to G minor. She had adapted the key to better fit the mood of the tune.
I have such an exciting interview with my friend, Melinda Crawford Perttu, to share with you today! Melinda and I talk about her childhood memories of going to the fun and vibrant Scottish highland games, or Scottish festivals, with her family. At these festivals, she discovered her love of Scottish fiddling and started entering fiddling competitions. Fiddling since age 11, Melinda has won numerous awards for her solo playing and her original compositions. She also performs as a member of the Grammy-nominated bagpipe/percussion band, The Rogues, and is the Director of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling held ever year in July at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. In addition to her fiddling, Melinda is also an associate professor of music at Westminster College, while also the orchestra director, and string education specialist, and violin/viola instructor. With a sound that harkens back to the Highlands and Islands, she has performed the music of traditional and modern Scottish fiddling in Scotland and throughout the United States. Blending traditional tunes and her own compositions, she weaves images of ancient lands into sets with vibrant dances that are as much fun to listen to as they are to play. I have included links to Melinda's Youtube channel for you to hear examples of her fiddling. I am also so excited to share with you a bonus episode of Melinda's music. In our conversation, Melinda talks about how she took a melody and adapted it to better fit the story and tone. You can hear the original melody and Melinda's re-interpretation in the bonus episode. Melinda's story as a trailblazing Scottish fiddler is so inspiring. You don't want to miss it! You can find Melinda on her Youtube channel. Today's episode is with my longtime friend, Dr. Daniel Perttu. We went to both high school and graduate school together. Dan is currently Professor of Music Theory and Composition at Westminster College, where he also serves as the Chair of the School of Music. His music has been performed on four continents and in over 40 of the United States and he has also received various commissions and awards. His music can be found on the Navona records label, in which his music has appeared on five albums. I had an inkling that music was a field that really combines both analytical and technical aspects, with creative expression. And I thought what better way to see that come together than to interview a composer! Dan has also shared a youtube link to one of his works called: To Spring (An Overture), performed by Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra. You can find it in the link below. Hearing the music will bring the concepts we talk about to life! We cover so much ground that I split this into 2 parts! In the first part, we talk about how music activates multiple centers around the brain, also how he started composing when he was 7 years old, and how he composes as a daily practice. In the 2nd part, we talk about how other composers influence him, how composers network, and also he is venturing into endeavors beyond music! In this episode, I talk with my friend Thomas Lee about how his career journey combines his technical background in engineering with his experience in business and government policy. Thomas shares the interesting work that happens at the interfaces of these sectors, in particular with his passion for climate change. Come listen to Thomas' wide-ranging work and interests and where his curiosity has led him! You can find Thomas at: Twitter: thomastlee Clubhouse: Climate 101 room every other Monday. Beginners are welcome! Some of my key takeaways from our conversation are: It is so easy to simplify someone else's job when we don't understand the big picture. Take a moment to explore what it's like being in other person's shoes Thomas started asking "why" from a very young age, first about objects and tools around him, and then that led to larger questions on society as well as individuals working together. Consider digging below the surface by asking "why" and following your curiosity. Things get interesting at the intersection, whether of industries or subjects or even devices! Where are intersections in your life and what are you learning from them? If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. Little did we know that we would hit it off and find many passions in common, including art, gardening, investing, and design. In this episode, I talk to Ryan Glaze, who was my manager when I was an intern at a local community pharmacy. Students loved him for his humor and strong relational skills which resulted in excellent customer service. Ryan is not just a pharmacist. Throughout the journey of his life, he has combined his analytical and creative skills while working as a pharmacist, photographer and an investment advisor. We talk about how Ryan uses analytical and creative skills to build businesses that serve people. Tune in to listen to the discussion on how he takes action on learning new things and building them into thriving businesses. In this episode: [02:55] Ryan's career path [07:43] Is emotional intelligence natural or learned? [09:41] Learning from people around you [13:25] Navigating and learning photography [19:44] Why Ryan started his photography business [26:10] Bringing creative energy [27:40] Ryan as an investment advisor [35:35] emotional intelligence conversation [39:56] Key takeaways Notable Quotes When he (manager) knows he's outclassed, he just lets the outclass person do their thing. That's the mark of a good manager. Photography in one sense isn't related to pharmacy. But delivering a great customer experience is common to both sides. You have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. I know that phrase is out there. But for a kid, they need to hear that. They need to step out. They need to know that there are safe spaces so you can mess up. The vast majority of anything that anyone does purposely relates and ultimately has to do with another human being. I think at the end of someone's time here on earth, if they look at where they started and where they ended up, it's never a straight line. We got to the point where we were pretty close to a 100% success rate on getting a kid to smile and to get them to look at the camera at the same time. It sometimes would take ten minutes. Some people need to be told certain things. They need to be pushed out of the nest. Key takeaways Ryan reminds us that we all have individual and collective purposes. If you look into that it often involves connecting to those around us. Ryan oftentimes started new endeavors by following his curiosity to new opportunities and then using his emotional intelligence to develop a relationship with customers. Ryan leads with serving others and looks for areas of need. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. I am so excited to bring you this conversation with my long-time friend Joy Huang. We start with Joy's love of chemistry and the lab, but then follow her explorations that take her to living abroad in Taiwan, a stint as a talent scout, before settling back into a field closer to her scientific roots. As a creative passion, she has built a culinary following from her blog, The Cooking of Joy, and her renown Instagram account @joyosity where she posts stunning pictures of her creations. This all started with her wanting to make a cookbook of her mom's Taiwanese recipes as a gift, but has led her to being on John Krasinski's Some Good News, the food website Bon Appetit, and the Boston Globe. Food, culture, and racism also come up in our conversation. We recorded this episode prior to the increase in news reports of attacks against Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders. We are greatly grieved by these events and continue to advocate for our community. Joy shows that food as a creative and analytical process is one way to continue cultural dialogue and social advocacy. Stay tuned to hear our wide-ranging conversation! You don't want to miss it!
