Welcome to the Engineering Influence podcast from the American Council of Engineering Companies, where we delve into the newly released ACEC Research Institute 2024 Quarter 4 Engineering Business Sentiment Survey. This quarterly survey offers a comprehensive look at current and future business conditions within the engineering industry by interviewing and surveying CEOs across the sector. In this episode, host Jeff is joined by Joe Bates, the researcher behind the survey, as they explore the positive sentiments surrounding the U.S. economy, the industry, and firm finances. Despite a slight moderation, the overall sentiment remains strong, buoyed by the bipartisan infrastructure law and ongoing projects reaching the construction phase. A major challenge discussed is the workforce shortage, with many firms turning down profitable work due to staffing issues. Joe and Jeff address the significant impact of this shortage and economic and political uncertainties on the industry's future outlook. The episode also highlights sectoral winners and losers, with government-supported areas like infrastructure and manufacturing thriving, while commercial real estate struggles. The booming data center market is also discussed, showcasing its continuous growth. Listeners are encouraged to explore the full report for deeper insights and historical trends and stay tuned for upcoming analyses on economic indicators and future forecasts. The episode concludes with a nod to the ongoing work of the ACEC Research Institute in providing valuable data and insights for the engineering community.
In this episode, Larry Narunsky shares his 28-year history as the technical director and founder of Convergent Water Controls (CWC) and how his company has become a cornerstone of Australia's water treatment industry over the past 28 years. Larry's story is a testament to the power of technical expertise and strategic business acumen. After migrating from South Africa with an engineering background, he transformed a small electronic services business into a thriving enterprise that now employs 15 people and serves as a crucial solutions provider in the water treatment sector. What makes Larry's journey particularly fascinating is how he navigated significant industry changes, including a pivotal moment following a tragic incident at Melbourne Aquarium that reshaped safety standards in cooling tower maintenance. Throughout our conversation, Larry shares invaluable insights into building a sustainable business alongside his brother, emphasising the importance of clear role division and systematic documentation. His approach to hiring - prioritising engineering expertise over pure sales experience - has proven instrumental in building lasting client relationships based on technical competence rather than traditional sales tactics. One of Larry's most compelling aspects of his leadership philosophy is his commitment to systematic processes and quality assurance. Under his guidance, CWC has developed robust internal systems that allow the business to operate efficiently while maintaining high service standards. The candid discussion about the challenges of stepping back from day-to-day operations and the importance of building a sustainable organisation offers practical wisdom for business owners contemplating their succession planning. Whether you're an engineering business owner, an industrial sector entrepreneur, or simply interested in building a sustainable business, this episode offers rich insights into the delicate balance of technical excellence, systematic growth, and exceptional customer service. Join us as Larry shares his journey from a one-man operation to leading a respected player in Australia's water treatment industry.

Our guest shares how to reverse engineer your business growth plan to align with getting a life you actually want by envisioning that life before your strategic and tactical business planning. Renee Morgan is the Founder & CEO of Radient (with an "e") Pearl Coaching & Consulting (www.RadientPearl.com), where she also provides Fractional COO services to clients and is a member of the Fractional Leadership community. She has over twenty years' experience in consulting, including at Deloitte. She continues with what to do to avoid those pitfalls and design and build a business that gets you toward the life you want and not burned out, frustrated, overworked, and spending time on things you don't like. The ACEC Research Institute's Joe Bates joined the program to take a closer look at the Institute's newly released Engineering Business Sentiment Study for Q1 2022. The new report, which updates the previous survey released in October 2021 shows there is extreme optimism among engineering firm leaders about their firms' finances and the the engineering and design industry as a whole. The same cannot be said about their outlook on the U.S. economy, which is a source of pessimism due to rising inflation and the labor shortage. Hot button topics among firm leaders continue to be project backlog and the talent shortage. In this episode, I talk with my friend Thomas Lee about how his career journey combines his technical background in engineering with his experience in business and government policy. Thomas shares the interesting work that happens at the interfaces of these sectors, in particular with his passion for climate change. Come listen to Thomas' wide-ranging work and interests and where his curiosity has led him! You can find Thomas at: Twitter: thomastlee Clubhouse: Climate 101 room every other Monday. Beginners are welcome! Some of my key takeaways from our conversation are: It is so easy to simplify someone else's job when we don't understand the big picture. Take a moment to explore what it's like being in other person's shoes Thomas started asking "why" from a very young age, first about objects and tools around him, and then that led to larger questions on society as well as individuals working together. Consider digging below the surface by asking "why" and following your curiosity. Things get interesting at the intersection, whether of industries or subjects or even devices! Where are intersections in your life and what are you learning from them? If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review on Apple Podcasts. In this episode of The Real Build, I had a great conversation with an award-winning Houston, Texas custom-home builder and remodeler- Brandon Lynch. I wanted to do this episode differently with Brandon. Instead of going through general questions as I have with other builders in the past, I wanted to have a conversation about how we can do better for our customers as builders. I wanted to dive deep into this because it is so important. This is more of a free-flowing interview, which I think people will like. Brandon and I touched on topics such as: How can we help customers better? What can we change? Customer Experience Sales General/initial meeting General Process Dealing with Subcontractors Listen to customers more Materials Customer Service – During and After Pricing/Bidding What about if something really bad happens? A little bit about Brandon- Brandon's passion for excellence in home & relationship building and forward-thinking, combined with his experience and education, differentiate him in a competitive marketplace. Brandon has a B.S. in Engineering Business from Texas A&M University. He is very involved with the Greater Houston Builders Association and is the Chairperson of the Custom Builders Council. He has received numerous nominations and awards for residential construction projects completed over the years.

Gerry, what update do you have for us?Gerry Donohue: 00:15 Well, the survey which is known in the industry as the EBI edged up slightly by 0.4 points to 62.6.Announcer: (00:23) So a 62.6 score. What does that mean? Gerry Donohue: (00:25) The EBI is a diffusion index in which the responses of about 200 firm leaders to more than a dozen questions about the business market and financial performance of their firms are distilled down to a single number. A number above 50 signifies business expansion. All scores below 50 indicate contraction.Announcer: 00:46 How does this score compare to past scores?Gerry Donohue: 00:48 We've been doing the EBI for about six and a half years and it has moved in a relatively narrow band or my high of 68.9 in the second quarter of 2014 to a low of 58.5 in the fourth quarter of 2018 that pretty accurately tracks the market.Gerry Donohue: 01:04 Over that period, business has generally been good for engineering firms and respondents. Concerns have focused on forces that create uncertainty. In the marketplace. For instance, the survey low in the fourth quarter of 2018 was due largely to worries about what tariffs and the trade war could do to the domestic market.Announcer: 01:20 What are some of the other highlights?Gerry Donohue: 01:22 Profitability and backlog are the big drivers in the Ebi and they reflect near term concerns, but long-term optimism, respondents expectations for firm profitability over the next three months and the next six months declined. But they're optimistic about increased profitability three years from now. Likewise, they reported that their backlogs have shrunk, but they expect them to grow over the next 12 months, which then feeds into those increased profitability expectations.Announcer: 01:49 So we do ask questions about market sector. What do the private and public market sectors, what are they looking for?Gerry Donohue: 01:56 Well, in the private sector, which is the, which accounts for about 80% of all construction firm leaders, expectations are mixed. They expect to see the industrial manufacturing education and land development sectors increase, but they're less optimistic about the energy and power, healthcare and building sectors and the public markets. They were more optimistic with five of the six sectors expected to improve. They said that the environmental sector and the building sector will improve the most followed by transportation, education and water and wastewater. They expect the healthcare sector to be flat.Announcer: 02:29 You'll also ask firms to report on the impact of the 2017 tax cuts and jobs act. What are they saying?Gerry Donohue: 02:35 Well, it's been over a year since the law took effect. It lowered the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% and due in large part to ACEC lobbying created a new 20% tax deduction for pass through entities such as s corporations, partnerships and sole proprietorships.Gerry Donohue: 02:51 More than a quarter of the respondents credited the new law with improving their bottom line. One said it was absolutely the right thing for business growth. While it's been made hiring harder and wages have gone up, profits have gone up as well. They also said that they've been able to increase investment in their firms. One firm leaders said that the lower tax rate incentivized his firm to retain more earnings and to improve their balance sheet. Other responses include, they've made new hires, they've grown their firm, and they've increased the value of their employee stock ownership programs. Something to note though, while almost all the comments on the new law were positive, several firm leaders were critical citing the subsequent rise in the federal budget deficits. One said the tax cut looks good in short term, but ultimately it's a terrible idea.Announcer: 03:34 And you also ask from leaders about their biggest challenges of running an engineering firm. What did you learn?Gerry Donohue: 03:40 Well, not surprisingly, more than 52% said that recruiting and retaining top talent is their biggest task. One said that they helped the economy and a talented high achieving, self-focused young workforce. Employee retention sits at the top of his worry list. Second was onerous contract demands from clients and owners. One firm leader said that clients increasingly viewing engineering services as a commodity and his firm constantly has to prove its value. Other challenges, we're distinguishing the firm from the competition, generating a suitable backlog, slow paying clients, and burdensome government regulations.Announcer: 04:13 That's very interesting. So how do our members find the report?Gerry Donohue: 04:17 Well, if you want to read the full report and look at the numbers behind the index, go to www.acec.org and scroll down to the engineering business index link.Announcer: 04:26 That's great. So we look forward to your next update, Jerry, and thank you for coming in.

Is your company able to grow without finance? MTD CNC Joe Reynolds, Colin Griffiths & Mark Deadman discuss. Joe argues that not all companies need finance he expresses that the subject is very broad and needs to be specified to gauge what companies really need. Colin believes finance is an essential part to stabilise cash flow but suggests a broker may be your better option to a branch. An interesting debate.
