**Operation BBQ Relief Serves Up Hope in Disaster-Stricken Areas** - Osprey Observer Podcast

Operation BBQ Relief (OBR), a nonprofit organization started by competitive barbecue chefs, steps up to meet that need, providing hot, comforting meals to people affected by natural disasters. The story of OBR began in 2011 after a massive tornado hit Joplin, Missouri. Founders, including co-founder Will Cleaver, saw an opportunity to put their skills to work, showing up with equipment and a small team of volunteers. They initially planned to serve a few thousand meals but ended up distributing over 120,000 meals in just 12 days, Cleaver recalls. This experience laid the foundation for an organization that today operates on a national scale, with a network of volunteers and partners across the country. From that first deployment, OBR has grown dramatically, having served 12 million meals in the years since. In a recent deployment in Florida, following Hurricane Melton, OBR hit the milestone of delivering 1 million meals to disaster survivors in just two weeks. With massive smokers that can cook up to 160 pork shoulders at once, OBR operates on a scale unimaginable to most, using commercial-grade equipment and an efficient, organized setup to serve up to 15,000 meals a day. "To hand someone a hot barbecue meal and see the smile on their face—it's incredibly rewarding," Cleaver shared in a recent interview on the Osprey Observer TV podcast. "Our volunteers don't just show up; they're self-sufficient, coming in with everything needed to be a support, not a burden, to the local community.” The logistical operation behind these meals is as impressive as the numbers. Volunteers can order meals for relief workers or distribution, with a simple, organized pickup process in place. Meals are ordered by quantity, coordinated, and picked up at central locations for quick, easy distribution to those who need them most. This process, combined with the team's preparation ahead of storms, enables them to provide critical, timely relief. Cleaver urges the public to get involved, whether by signing up as a volunteer, making donations, or even simply sharing their story. OBR relies heavily on financial support and partnerships, which allow them to secure and prepare meals on a large scale. "Every share, every donation, helps us reach more people in need," Cleaver says, emphasizing the power of community in making OBR's mission possible. To learn more about OBR's work and get involved, check out the full interview on the Osprey Observer TV podcast on YouTube and other major podcast platforms. Whether through donations, volunteer work, or simply helping spread the word, every contribution helps OBR continue its mission of feeding those in need when disaster strikes.Website: http://ospreyobserver.com https://www.facebook.com/OspreyObserverFans/ https://www.instagram.com/ospreyobserver/https://twitter.com/ospreyobserver

The Mission of the Angel Foundation is to partner with businesses and individuals to be a caring resource for families in our community experiencing temporary crisis due to a life-threatening illness or catastrophic event.https://angelfoundationfl.com/https://www.facebook.com/AngelFoundationFL/https://twitter.com/AngelFndnFLhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UChZV-6Io_CSI4l-Te4cvNCAInfo@angelfoundationfl.com///In the wake of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, the Florida-based Angel Foundation stepped up with swift action and support for the local community. Known for assisting families facing critical illnesses and life-altering events, the nonprofit redirected its efforts to provide immediate relief for hurricane survivors, answering urgent calls for help in the Brandon and Riverview areas. According to Liz Brewer, president of the Angel Foundation, the group acted quickly to meet the community's needs. “I literally said a prayer and asked, ‘What can we do in this community?'” Brewer said on a recent episode of the Osprey Observer TV podcast. Within 24 hours, her team organized a relief event at The Regent in Riverview, where they distributed hot meals, meal kits, cleanup supplies, and even disaster relief assistance, working with partners such as Operation BBQ Relief, Feeding Tampa Bay, and local organizations. The foundation's relief efforts offered more than just food; they provided a space where residents could access critical supplies, including clothes, gift cards, and personal essentials. “The families that came in had literally lost everything,” Brewer said. In just one day, volunteers gave out more than 500 hot meals and distributed essentials that had been in scarce supply in the aftermath of the storms. As Brewer emphasized, the foundation is committed to easing the long-term recovery process. “We don't go through a lot of red tape,” she explained. “We want to get the gift cards and resources into the hands of these families as quickly as possible.” In addition to immediate aid, the Angel Foundation aims to support those facing financial hardships as they continue to rebuild. The Angel Foundation relies heavily on community support. Volunteers and donations are essential for continuing its work, Brewer noted. "People can visit our website, AngelFoundationFL.com, to learn how to get involved,” she added, encouraging the community to donate or sign up as volunteers. For a closer look at how the Angel Foundation is impacting lives and to learn how to help, watch the full interview with Liz Brewer on the Osprey Observer TV podcast on YouTube and other major platforms.Website: http://ospreyobserver.com https://www.facebook.com/OspreyObserverFans/ https://www.instagram.com/ospreyobserver/https://twitter.com/ospreyobserver

Hello and welcome to Living Hope Church located in historical Williamsburg, VA. Join us again this week as Pastor Bill reminds us of the importance of worshiping God amidst the stress and chaos of life, especially during political uncertainty. This week Pastor Bill highlights the parallels between our current culture and ancient Rome, warning against a decline into distraction and complacency. Through the stories of Jonah, Nahum, and King Josiah, we see the consequences of failing to pass on faith to future generations. Josiah's revival was short-lived because he didn't prepare his successors for God's work. The message urges believers to take refuge in God, especially in times of distress, and to start revival within their own hearts, not just from political leaders. The speaker envisions a sweeping revival where God's love transforms society, calling us to pray, seek God's will, and share the Good News with others. Finally, he challenges us to take action in faith, and invites you to join in the upcoming series, "Some Good News," where we'll explore the power of the Gospel to change lives.Welcome to Living Hope Church! On my way to go see a dance piece, I stopped off at the Drama Bookshop and noticed that they had a collection of plays written by my old friend. I figured I should buy it, since I have a goal to dedicate a shelf, nay, a bookcase, to the work of my friends. Also, I wanted to read the plays. Over the years, we've been less in touch so I haven't managed to see everything or read everything. In our twenties, we were very close. We talked on the phone many nights a week and we'd go out and wander the streets of New York, finding delicious tidbits to eat. We talked about our ambitions and our hopes. He dreamed of seeing his plays on Broadway and I wanted that dream for him too. It was a time of much angst and sometimes we'd both of us slip into hopelessness. You really have no idea what's coming. I guess we never do. To keep reading Some Good News for Some Friends, From the Future, visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. What the Health?!?

In the classic holiday film "It's a Wonderful Life", Clarence the angel says "remember, George, no man is a failure who has friends". In the holiday spirit, Your Doctor Friends took Clarence's words to heart, and present to you today the research behind how friendship keeps us healthy. In today's episode, we highlight the growing amount of evidence that supports friendships as a key aspect of our health, and, conversely, how social and emotional isolation often leads to poor health outcomes. The American Psychological Association summarizes, “given the clear benefits of friendship, psychologists say we should promote platonic social connection across society—including in school, at work, in public spaces (such as on public transportation), and through entertainment.” So let's do that today, shall we? And after listening to the episode, maybe reach out to a friend with a quick text, a silly photo, or an invite to meet up for a treat together. It might just help you live longer ;) And bonus dessert topic at the end, we talk about SOME GOOD NEWS in cancer treatment and survivorship! Happy holidays from Your Doctor Friends! We hope you're safe, happy, and healthy :) Resources for today's episode include: An American Psychological Association article titled "The science of why friendships keep us healthy". We want our kids to follow their dreams, explore their passions, and show gratitude. But if you've ever tried talking to your teens about these topics, or asked questions to guide their thinking, it may not have landed as well as you'd hoped. So how do we teach these things to our teens and make sure it sticks? Inspirational Author, and Podcast host, Ed Gerety, has some valuable insight into how to reach our teens with these life lessons. Ed is sharing some of the gems from his book Shine Your Light: Navigate Your Way to a Life You Love.  Ed's book frames a thought provoking conversation, gratitude, kindness, self-confidence, goal setting, and staying curious with our teens. Ed encourages us to lead by example, and shine our light on these values. By doing so, we make space to invite more of each of them into our lives, instead of getting a classic eye roll or “I don't know” from our teens.  Connect with Ed on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and his website.  I hope you'll share this episode with fellow parents. We are not meant to parent alone, and by sharing valuable information we can support each other. Vine Vegan - OUR STORY FOOD IS MY LOVE LANGUAGE My greatest relationships and bonds have been forged with an abundance of food cultivated with love and care. Every gathering with friends and family; always a feast. Breaking bread together, sharing laughs, and stories is how I've always made deep and meaningful connections with people. No greater joy exists for me than to have my house full of people (family, friends, strangers; literally anyone) and for them to eat a meal I made and leave feeling the love I poured into preparing it. In My Family Food = Love I learned to cook from the most important and influential people in my life; my mom, dad, and grandmother. My family's journey to veganism was quick and mostly seamless, and rewarding in all the ways. As we swapped our chicken for tofu and our ground beef for lentils; I knew that with every meal, I was impacting the livelihood of animals and our planet. I was setting up myself, my husband, and our children for a healthier future. With every non-vegan friend or family member who marveled over my plant-based delicacies, I knew I could make a difference if more people could enjoy them. I am determined to set a strong example for my kids to have empathy and compassion for the world around us. To hope others will join us, even if just a few plant-based meals a week. As a daughter of a Latino and a Brit, who was born in Hawaii, raised in Europe, and an American through-and through; I was sure to balance everything by connecting my heritage and life experiences when creating the Vine Vegan menu. With this in my heart and support from my family and friends, I bring you vegan dishes that I hope will blow your mind. This is my mission: to bring people together over food, capture the culture of community, and use ridiculously delicious vegan food to do it. I welcome all who are curious, or defiant, or courageous. We want you to eat well and feel good about what you eat. And with every spoonful I hope there to be love, compassion, and open-mindedness. With Love, Danielle Stevens eat@vinevegan.com Plants for Pets has a program where adoption flyers are attached to all take out orders to promote adoption. Just last month, for Episode 146, we took a look at some recent successes in public policy by one of our grantee partners, Texas Harm Reduction Alliance. In that episode and in many others we've tried to get across that not only is the policy arena a crucial venue for transforming mental health for Texans, but we'll only truly succeed if we can help build the policy capacity of others. A good recent example is one we're going to be discussing today. Family Service Center of Galveston is a Hogg Foundation Communities of Care grantee partner. They are part of the The Future is Us collaborative, which works across sectors to address community conditions, practices, and policies that perpetuate racial inequities in the education system in the Galveston area. Their CEO, Dr. Jared Williams, and their public policy director, Keith Henry, join us to talk about their recent achievements in public policy. Keep Going: The Underrated Secret to a Wonderful Life

Andrew Petty is Dying

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2023 8:12

Unless you're completely deluded or hiding under a rock, you know that life is hard. On the whole, it's a series of challenges, crises, and steep learning curves punctuated by brief periods of relative peace and ease. That's why all of us need to hear the very simple, highly-underrated, and completely unsexy message I'm offering you today. Unglamorous though it may be, it's a key to living a life we'll be outrageously proud of when we die.    The Message Keep going.  That's my message for you today. Profound and sexy, right?  When work is kicking your butt…Keep Going.  When you're passed over for a promotion…Keep Going. When your New Year's resolve is running out…Keep Going.  When things at home are stressful…Keep Going. When your kids are choosing destructive paths…Keep Going.  When your relationship with your grown son or daughter is distant and cold…Keep Going. When your desire for a significant other remains unfulfilled…Keep Going.  When your new business venture is on the rocks…Keep Going.  When your health begins to fail you…Keep Going.  When you get a terminal diagnosis…Keep Going.  When a loved one dies…Keep Going.  When others say it can't be done…Keep Going.  When the odds seem insurmountable…Keep Going.  When life throws you a curveball…Keep Going.  When your friends desert you…Keep Going. When your spouse betrays you…Keep Going.  When you betray your spouse…Keep Going.  When you make a mistake…Keep Going.  When the news is filled with gloom and doom…Keep Going.  When the economy is tanking…Keep Going.  If you're going through Hell…Keep Going, to quote the inimitable Winston Churchill.  If you're going through heaven, enjoy it…and Keep Going.  Whatever life is like for you right now…Keep Going. Don't stop. Keep Going.    The Real Road to Victory  Keep Going. Stay in the game. Find a way forward. Do not give in and do not give up. You might have to find a different way forward than you anticipated. So be it. Adjust and keep going. Your original dream may have crumbled. Very well. Grieve the loss, learn the lessons, and keep going.  When all of our strategies, tactics, and lifehacks aren't making a dent, “keep going” is all that remains. We too often look for the silver bullet and the shortcut, the smooth path to victory. But the road to victory is paved with grit, perseverance, determination, and a dogged insistence to simply keep going, no matter what. It's paved with courage, humility, and radical responsibility.  Too many of us have forgotten that.  Chop the wood, and carry the water. Chop the wood, and carry the water.  It's not pretty. It's not how we might like it to be. But it is Reality. Better to align with Reality than deny it and compound our misery.    Keep Going…with Purpose and Flexibility “Keep Going” isn't a call to purposeless, directionless movement without reflection, intention, or forethought. Sometimes, “keep going” can mean pausing to refresh, reflect, and regroup. But don't stay there, get stuck there, or get lulled into complacency. Rouse yourself to action again based upon the Insights gained during your pause to refresh, reflect, and regroup, and keep going. Insight + Action = Transformation. Wash, rinse, repeat. It's simple, but it ain't easy. So shoulders back, head up, eyes open, and with a heart full of courage and humility, take your next step forward.  “Keep Going” also isn't encouragement to keep doing self-destructive things or keep doing the same thing expecting different results.  When going in one direction isn't getting the results you want, keep going, but try a different direction. No matter what, though, keep going, and don't stop.   Get the Help You Need to Keep Going If you need help to keep going, practice radical self-responsibility and get the help you need. Maybe you need help getting going in the first place, much less keeping going. Fret not: It's part of the human condition to find ourselves completely stuck sometimes. Even better, stuckness is a necessary and sacred place full of potential energy and learning just waiting to be realized. Tune in to episodes 27 and 28, a two-part series on Breaking the Stuckness Stalemate, to begin getting unstuck and moving forward again today.    Some Good News! Here's some really good news: We only ever have to keep going for one day. Today is all we've got. Tomorrow never comes. Jesus said not to worry about tomorrow. Today has enough troubles of its own. And none of us by worrying can add a day to our lives. Whatever you may think of Jesus, that's some solid advice.  Here's more good news: Bottomless reservoirs of motivation to keep going are available to all of us all the time. Simply remember that you are going to die. One day–maybe even one day soon–you will draw your last breath. But you're not dead yet. In that light, nothing is more precious than this very moment. Tune in to episode 73 to learn how to cultivate this Mortality Mindset.  Keep going.   These APiD Episodes Will Help You Keep Going, Too Get the antidote to fear, dread, and timid living in episode 50. In episode 57, learn what to do when life throws you a curveball. Learn how to make the most of today in episode 58.  Remember: You ARE going to die. But you're not dead yet. So get after it!   The Graveyard Group: Get Going and Keep Going None of us, no matter how strong or how extraordinary, can keep going all the time on our own. Nor would that be ideal even if we could. We need help from others. The Graveyard Group gives you your own personal, confidential board of advisors with whom to consult and collaborate on a weekly basis. The Mortality Mindset energizes your work together. Together, you keep going, step by step, week by week, giving the things that matter most the attention they deserve in pursuit of a life you'll be outrageously proud of when you die.  Break free from the status quo, become the person you were made to be, and live the life you were made to live.  New groups for men and women are forming now. Thoughts on Breathing I use a breathing technique to control my stutter. On the other hand, I also practice different types of breathwork whether it is Wim Hof or conscious, connected breathing. In fact, I'll have to connect you with John Mensa who was a fantastic breathwork teacher. And, of course, traditional mindfulness meditation also incorporates a lot of mindful breathing. Suggested Resources Book: The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself by Michael A. Singer App: Calm  App: Nike Running App (Combining mindfulness with running) Bullying Story I wish mindfulness had been taught when I was in school. It would have made an enormous difference because I've lost count of the number of times I would go back home to my room, just feeling absolutely awful about what had happened at school. I felt belittled and I felt so small. So the way that mindfulness would have had a tremendous impact is by reminding me that I am not the feelings I'm having. I'm not the thoughts that I'm having. The mere fact that these are entities that I am having implies separation between the ‘I', and what is being felt and being experienced. Having that healthy ability to observe rather than identify and react would indeed have allowed me to feel what I needed to feel in a healthier way, as opposed to going for avoidance as my MO. In this episode, we get to know Joy Huang, one of the founders and moderators for the Taiwanese Home Cooking Facebook group. She started her food blog, The Cooking of Joy, because she was inspired to document her mom's Taiwanese dishes. This hobby continued to grow and now you can find her work on Instagram at @joyosity where she is known for her artistic take on baked goods. We asked Joy to share her early influences, tips for food photography, and some of the most lively topics discussed in the Facebook group of over 35,000 people who love to make Taiwanese food.Featuring Joy Huang:The Cooking of Joy blog: www.cookingofjoy.com @joyosity and #thecookingofjoy on InstagramTaiwanese Home Cooking Facebook GroupResources mentioned:Joy Huang on Some Good News by John Krasinski, Bon Appetit, and Food52Taiwanese Restaurant Recommendations around the world (Google MyMap)Joy's guide to making bread including her sourdough recipeJoy's beef noodle soup (niu rou mian) recipe (original, latest)Joy's recipes for various dumplingsTaiwanese American Foundation (TAF) summer conferenceBoston Organics produce deliveryJocelyn Shyong's homemade pineapple cakes in the Boston area (must be in Facebook Group), or @jjcookery on InstagramEric Sze on Munchies YouTube on white pepper in Taiwanese food and five-spice tooCover art photo credits: Joy HuangConnect:instagram.com/heartsintaiwanfacebook.com/heartsintaiwanbuymeacoffee.com/heartsintaiwan ← Buy us a boba!heartsintaiwan.com
