The Informed Citizen – Vigilante Justice in SeattleIn this eye-opening episode, host Philip Lindholm sits down with investigative journalist Jonathan Choe and newly elected Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank to tackle one of the most disturbing trends in the Pacific Northwest: the rise of vigilante justice in Seattle. With lawlessness on the rise and faith in public institutions waning, citizens are beginning to take matters into their own hands—and this episode explores why.Episode Highlights:Seattle's Descent into LawlessnessFrom teens wielding axes to open-air drug markets andemboldened squatters, Jonathan Choe reveals what his reporting has uncovered on the streets of Seattle. He describes a city where criminal behavior is often met with little to no consequence—and where both residents and law enforcement feel powerless.Broken Systems, Demoralized ForcesSheriff Keith Swank explains how decades of policy shifts have created a vacuum of enforcement. Felonies downgraded to misdemeanors, understaffed police departments, and lenient prosecution have undermined public safety and shaken morale among officers. Why Vigilantism Is on the RiseAs public trust evaporates, homeowners and landlords areturning to private security—or taking justice into their own hands. From landlords evicting squatters at gunpoint to citizens threatening to 'bring the homies,' the line between justice and revenge is becoming dangerously thin.Addiction, Homelessness, and Misdiagnosed CausesThe conversation turns to root causes. Both Swank and Choereject the 'more affordable housing will fix it' narrative, pointing instead to addiction, untreated mental illness, and a lack of accountability. They argue that real compassion includes intervention and involuntary treatment—notenabling behavior in the name of tolerance.A Tale of Two CountiesSwank contrasts Seattle's decline with his new leadership inPierce County, where he's reforming the Sheriff's Office from within. He explains how he's building trust, elevating qualified leaders, and restoring morale to ensure Pierce County doesn't become the next King County.Case Study: The Squatter Who StayedIn a stunning example, Choe recounts the case of SteveHickey—a social media influencer and former fire commissioner who illegally occupied a million-dollar home for nearly a year, using legal loopholes and bankruptcy filings to evade eviction. The rightful homeowner? Homeless. Thesystem? Broken.Takeaways:This gripping episode is a must-listen for anyone concernedabout justice, safety, and the social contract. It doesn't just diagnose the problem—it demands that we rethink what real public safety looks like, who enforces it, and what happens when they don't.This podcast is for informational purposes only and notprofessional advice. Host: Philip Lindholm Guest: Senator Steve O'Ban Join us as we explore the homeless crisis, exploring the problem and discussing solutions. This show is for the game changers, the world shapers, the inquisitive, and the ambitious who believe in Thomas Jeffersons great saying that, “an informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy.” So whether you're tuning in during your commute, at the gym, or relaxing at home, join us on this exciting journey and let's dive into this episode of, The Informed Citizen. Discussion Topics Topic 1: Who is Steve O'ban? From paper boy to seasoned senior lawyer skilled in Governmental and Legislative Affairs. Steve has over twenty-five years in private practice, seven years in state government, and five years as senior counsel for the executive at the county level. Steve has served as chair and ranking on health care, human services and other legislative committees and is now tackling one of the biggest problem of our time, the homeless epidemic. Topic 2: Why is the situation so dire? The reason most people are on the street is the profound failure of family. From aging out of foster care to general lack of support. Most of our current solutions are so one dimensional. They may address one aspect of the problem, but fail to attack the others head on. Safe housing is crucial, but so is mental wellness, relationship building, and working together to build hope for a brighter future. Topic 3: Compassion for our neighbors. This is a community crisis, and our solutions must be humanity centered. These are real people, with real lives. We all deserve to live in a community that is built on trust and Community First Village provides just that. It offers solutions to the many problems this crisis raises, and is truly a light in which the hope for a brighter future can be seen. Closing Thoughts: We hope this discussion about the homeless pandemic raised some eyebrows and sparked some conversations. But remember, the conversation doesn't stop here. Host: Philip Lindholm Guest: Byron Robinson Introduction: Join us as we dive into the world of Capitalism, exploring trends, sharing insights, and engaging in a thought-provoking discussion. Discussion Topics 1: Who is Byron Robinson? From the Olympics to the world of finance, Byron is only just getting started. He brings the mindset of “there is no defense in track and field. If you are not successful in track, its because you didn't do the work”, and applies it to his daily life. This approach is vital to his success, as he attacks the problems surrounding Capitalism in the modern world. 2: People don't believe in Capitalism. Capitalism and Entrepreneurship go hand in hand, and neither are for the faint of heart. These ideals require a high-risk tolerance, vison, ambition, consistency, and discipline which can be challenging. The question of “how can I become a millionaire, when I can't even afford my phone bill”, is a very real scenario for millions of people. But it is possible with the help of Capitalism, to take of what is in front of you today, while keeping the long term goal in mind. Remember, success compounds. 3: Is life Fair? It can be increasingly easy to focus on shortcomings, rather than what is actually advocating in your favor. It is so important to dive deep into yourself, and identify your strengths, and then double down on them. Closing Thoughts: We hope you enjoyed this peak into the world of Capitalism, but remember, the conversation doesn't stop here. We love hearing from you, our listeners, so be sure to reach out.
