The Informed Citizen – Vigilante Justice in SeattleIn this eye-opening episode, host Philip Lindholm sits down with investigative journalist Jonathan Choe and newly elected Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank to tackle one of the most disturbing trends in the Pacific Northwest: the rise of vigilante justice in Seattle. With lawlessness on the rise and faith in public institutions waning, citizens are beginning to take matters into their own hands—and this episode explores why.Episode Highlights:Seattle's Descent into LawlessnessFrom teens wielding axes to open-air drug markets andemboldened squatters, Jonathan Choe reveals what his reporting has uncovered on the streets of Seattle. He describes a city where criminal behavior is often met with little to no consequence—and where both residents and law enforcement feel powerless.Broken Systems, Demoralized ForcesSheriff Keith Swank explains how decades of policy shifts have created a vacuum of enforcement. Felonies downgraded to misdemeanors, understaffed police departments, and lenient prosecution have undermined public safety and shaken morale among officers. Why Vigilantism Is on the RiseAs public trust evaporates, homeowners and landlords areturning to private security—or taking justice into their own hands. From landlords evicting squatters at gunpoint to citizens threatening to 'bring the homies,' the line between justice and revenge is becoming dangerously thin.Addiction, Homelessness, and Misdiagnosed CausesThe conversation turns to root causes. Both Swank and Choereject the 'more affordable housing will fix it' narrative, pointing instead to addiction, untreated mental illness, and a lack of accountability. They argue that real compassion includes intervention and involuntary treatment—notenabling behavior in the name of tolerance.A Tale of Two CountiesSwank contrasts Seattle's decline with his new leadership inPierce County, where he's reforming the Sheriff's Office from within. He explains how he's building trust, elevating qualified leaders, and restoring morale to ensure Pierce County doesn't become the next King County.Case Study: The Squatter Who StayedIn a stunning example, Choe recounts the case of SteveHickey—a social media influencer and former fire commissioner who illegally occupied a million-dollar home for nearly a year, using legal loopholes and bankruptcy filings to evade eviction. The rightful homeowner? Homeless. Thesystem? Broken.Takeaways:This gripping episode is a must-listen for anyone concernedabout justice, safety, and the social contract. It doesn't just diagnose the problem—it demands that we rethink what real public safety looks like, who enforces it, and what happens when they don't.This podcast is for informational purposes only and notprofessional advice. In this episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank and Thomas dissect Daredevil: Born Again Episode 7, “Art for Art's Sake.” With Muse's storyline abruptly cut short and Kingpin's dark side reawakening, the episode leaves fans both frustrated and intrigued. We talk character motivations, missed opportunities, jaw-dropping moments, and what this all means as the show hurtles toward the finale. Also, shoutout to Apple TV's The Studio—we've got a hot new comedy recommendation you won't want to miss. ⏱️ Timestamps & Topics: 00:00 Introduction and first impressions 00:25 Muse's abrupt ending and missed villain potential 01:36 Muse's motivations vs. lost storytelling opportunity 03:24 The therapist connection and what was missing 04:30 Muse's character in the comics vs. the show 05:06 Alternate endings and writing what could've been 06:01 Vigilante task force development and character cracks 08:09 Vanessa's secret moves and Kingpin's true nature 10:25 Power shifts, betrayals, and Vanessa's motivations 12:04 Mirrored arcs of Matt and Fisk 13:22 The return of Karen Page and Daredevil's emotional grounding 15:29 Adam: Kingpin's punching bag or pressure valve? 16:40 Fisk's rise through legal channels mirrors comic roots 17:24 New York as a character and who really protects it 18:40 Sherry's confrontation with Matt and moral questions 20:41 Muse fight choreography and ADR fail 23:52 Fixing the series—rewrites and Bob Iger's intervention 25:40 Show Recommendation: The Studio on Apple TV 27:56 Final thoughts and listener shoutouts ✅ Key Takeaways: Muse's arc was a major letdown, especially given his deep comic origins as an Inhuman with sensory-disrupting powers. Vanessa manipulates Kingpin back to his criminal roots, proving she's the real power behind the throne. Daredevil and Fisk are perfectly mirrored this season, both believing they need to unleash their darker sides to save New York. Episode 7 suffered from rushed pacing, missing an opportunity to build suspense with Muse's obsession. The vigilante task force and North's internal struggle are promising but need more screen time. The rewrites are clearly working—shifting the tone back toward what fans loved in the Netflix series while keeping things fresh.

(It helps new listeners find the show.) Thank you. This is Renegade Files Episode 79, Vigilante Justice. Since there have been laws and systems of justice, there have been flaws and cracks in these systems. Sometimes the innocents go to jail, and sometimes the criminals get away. A Vigilante is someone who acts unofficially, and outside of the establishments of law enforcement and criminal prosecution, to deliver what they believe to be justice, in situations where the legal system, in the vigilante's eyes, fails to do the right thing. Some vigilantes are seen as heroes, others are seen as reckless dangers to society, and some divide opinions and create camps of both supporters and critics of their actions. On this episode of Renegade Files we will travel down the back alleys and desolate woodland roads in search of vigilante justice. We will try to understand some of the circumstances which drive people to take the law into their own hands, and we will delve into four specific cases and groups who have defined the modern vigilantes: Gary Plauché, Bernhard Goetz, The Guardian Angels, and Daniel Penny. Is there a time when everyone agrees that a vigilante has done the right thing? Do some deserve medals? Do all deserve jail cells? And in the end, what does it say about our society as a whole, when the wheels of justice force certain, otherwise law abiding citizens over the edge to take actions that make them criminals themselves? Topic Warning: This episode deals with topics of serious crime including violence, abduction, and murder so please only proceed if you are comfortable with hearing such subjects. It is not my style to delve into graphic or disturbing details, however, the basic facts of some of these cases may be disturbing nonetheless. If you are fine with hearing such tales then join me now, and together we will explore this controversial topic as we get into some of the most intriguing cases on record, and tackle a most divisive subject on Renegade Files Episode 79, Vigilante Justice. Last week on Fox News the subject of vigilante violence was center focus as the network lionized Daniel Penny, a former Marine who was acquitted of criminally negligent homicide for killing a homeless man, while lambasting the public reaction towards the cold-blooded assassination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. The folks at Fox also seemed disappointed that Black Lives Matter protesters weren't rioting across the country over Penny's acquittal. Sean Hannity and Dr. Drew Pinsky both weaved fairy tales about the healthcare system in the United States while Hannity also obsessed over mysterious drones, Jessica Tarlov schooled her co-hosts on Biden's economic accomplishments and Tom Homan said he would prosecute governors if they got in the way of his plans for mass deportations. There are two interviews packed into this week's episode of Most Notorious! First Dale Ross, author of "A Voice for Ira" joins me to talk about the horrific death of Ira Gurley in a bizarre elevator accident in 1932 Arkansas. While it looked to be an tragic accident on the surface, some evidence suggests there may have been something more sinister afoot involving corrupt state government officials and gangsters. My second guest is Jeremy W. Gray, author of "The Infamous Birmingham Axe Murders: Prohibition, Gangsters & Vigilante Justice". He shares stories about a series of brutal murders that frightened citizens of Birmingham, Alabama in the early 1920s. Former Centerville mayor Jay Edward Ostrem, 64, is facing three counts of first-degree murder after allegedly killing three men on Monday night. The incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in Centerville, approximately 40 miles south of Sioux Falls. The victims were identified as Paul Frankus, 26, Zachary Frankus, 21, and Timothy Richmond, 35. According to a probable cause affidavit, Zachary Frankus made a frantic 911 call to report a shooting on the 1000 block of Main Street. During the call, Zachary mentioned he had been shot and subsequently fell silent. A South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Conservation officer was the first to arrive at the scene. While waiting for backup, the officer observed Ostrem exiting the home's garage. Despite initial commands to stop, Ostrem only complied after the officer approached him a second time. Ostrem informed the officer he had a gun in his pocket. Authorities discovered an AR-style rifle on the ground beside Ostrem, a .380 pistol in his pants pocket, and several shotgun and rifle shell casings on him. Ostrem had blood on his hand and smelled of alcohol. Inside the home, officers found the three men dead from gunshot wounds. Ostrem's wife told investigators that on May 23, Paul Frankus had allegedly sexually assaulted her while they were drinking at her home. She reported the incident to Ostrem on Monday evening, allegedly prompting him to leave their home in a rage. She claimed she did not know Ostrem's intentions or whether he was armed. The South Dakota Attorney General's Office issued a press release confirming Ostrem's arrest and assuring the public that there was no further threat. Ostrem is being held without bond at the Minnehaha County Jail. Ostrem has a controversial history in Centerville. He previously served as the town's mayor and was a Turner County sheriff's deputy. During his tenure as mayor, he was sued for sexual harassment by the city's police chief, a case that was settled two years later.
