In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Peter Beinart speaks with UC Berkeley History Professor Ussama Makdisi, who was personally named and targeted by Members of Congress in the recent House of Representatives hearing ostensibly on antisemitism in higher education. Beinart and Makdisi discuss the "surreal" experience of being denounced in Congress as well as the truth and power of the widespread mobilization of people from a wide range of backgrounds, faiths, and generations calling for justice and an end to the genocide in Gaza. They also discuss the long and relatively under-researched history of interconnections among Muslims, Christians, and Jewish communities in the Middle East, the importance of reading history, and the shocking brutality of the genocide in Gaza. As they close their conversation, Makdisi asserts that the urgent and essential task is to make sense of the world in terms that "humanize rather than dehumanize, historicize rather than dehistoricize, advocate for justice and equality rather than ethno-religious supremacy of any sort." Dr. Ussama Makdisi is Professor of History and Chancellor's Chair at the University of California Berkeley. He was previously Professor of History and the first holder of the Arab-American Educational Foundation Chair of Arab Studies at Rice University in Houston. During AY 2019-2020, Professor Makdisi was a Visiting Professor at the University of California at Berkeley in the Department of History. Makdisi was awarded the Berlin Prize and spent the Spring 2018 semester as a Fellow at the American Academy of Berlin. Professor Makdisi's most recent book Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World was published in 2019 by the University of California Press. He is also the author of Faith Misplaced: the Broken Promise of U.S.-Arab Relations, 1820-2001 (Public Affairs, 2010). His previous books include Artillery of Heaven: American Missionaries and the Failed Conversion of the Middle East (Cornell University Press, 2008), which was the winner of the 2008 Albert Hourani Book Award from the Middle East Studies Association, the 2009 John Hope Franklin Prize of the American Studies Association, and a co-winner of the 2009 British-Kuwait Friendship Society Book Prize given by the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies. Makdisi is also the author of The Culture of Sectarianism: Community, History, and Violence in Nineteenth-Century Ottoman Lebanon (University of California Press, 2000) and co-editor of Memory and Violence in the Middle East and North Africa (Indiana University Press, 2006). He has published widely on Ottoman and Arab history as well as on U.S.-Arab relations and U.S. missionary work in the Middle East. Peter Beinart is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents, and an MSNBC Political Commentator. His newest book (published 2025) is Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning. Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.
On this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, we are joined with Juliette Bryant, a courageous survivor of Jeffrey Epstein's vile sex trafficking operation. Lured by the promise of a modeling career, Juliette was instead ensnared in a web of calculated evil. She was abused, exploited, and flown to Epstein's private island where countless others suffered the same fate. This is more than a scandal. It is a moral reckoning. And yet, the full, unredacted Epstein list, containing the names of powerful men who enabled or participated in this wickedness, remains sealed. Why is that?Donald Trump promised the American people he would release it. Now, he mocks those demanding it, calling us “bad people” and “weaklings.” Well, it's actually bad and weak to fail to release the Epstein list, Mr. President. But we will not be intimidated. The righteous are commanded to expose darkness, not negotiate with it. Trump's evasiveness increasingly resembles guilt. It's certainly not strong leadership. We will not be silenced. Not by politicians, not by media, and not by fear. We demand the truth.--https://www.thebrandsunday.com/products/the-bible-study-physical?srsltid=AfmBOoq6zS6i2LVAaJq4sRAuJqL9WZWgV03ccH9c4dufm2XMD0ozmV5S
Bongani Bingwa speaks to Zamantungwa Mbeki, Provincial Manager at the South African Human Rights Commission, as nearly 1,000 residents in Mamelodi remain stuck in dangerous asbestos shelters once promised as "temporary." The City of Tshwane points fingers at a failed contractor, citing missed deadlines and mismanaged funds, initially budgeted at R52 million, now slashed to R20 million. Meanwhile, families wait. In 1263, Cologne stood at a crossroads — again. Just a year after forcing Archbishop Engelbert II von Falkenburg into a peace agreement, the city found itself betrayed. Oaths had been made, sealed, and sworn before God. But behind the scenes, the archbishop plotted revenge — aided by papal absolution and secret plans to arrest the city's leaders.

Six years ago, notorious paedophile Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his New York City prison cell. And yet, Epstein's influence - and the mystery surrounding his alleged “client list”— is more alive than ever and is driving a wedge through Donald Trump's MAGA movement. During his election campaign last year, Trump promised to release Epstein-related files if elected, but is now accused by his own supporters of backpedalling on his promise to uncover the truth. With pressure mounting, will his refusal to deliver on the Epstein files fracture the movement he built? And can he pivot attention, as he often doe, back to safer ground, like tariffs and trade wars? In this episode, we pull back the curtain on why so many small business teams are disengaged—and what your leadership habits may have to do with it. Disengagement isn't about lazy employees. It's usually about broken systems, unclear expectations, and leaders who are running on fumes. We explore the real reasons teams stop trying, why yelling is a symptom—not the problem—and how to rebuild trust with systems that do the heavy lifting. If your team has gone quiet… this is the episode that explains why. You'll also hear: Why toxic culture is the #1 reason employees quit (and it's not what you think) The hidden cost of yelling, snapping, or reactive leadership How small, unspoken leadership promises quietly break trust and performance The 5 C's framework that makes accountability feel like support—not pressure How AI-driven systems can make trust, clarity, and consistency automatic Ready to lead without chaos? Episode #995 In this Revisit episode, Doug and Brad Holt unpack a tough but necessary topic: what really happens when men keep secrets in their relationships. They share stories from the men they've coached and talk through what it actually looks like to come clean. The hard part isn't just the confession—it's facing the fear of what comes next. But if you've been carrying something around and it's starting to feel heavy, this episode might help you see another way forward. This one's not about shaming anyone. It's about getting honest, stepping into leadership, and choosing connection over control. If something in your gut says it's time to stop hiding, this is the episode to listen to. Ready to stop carrying the weight of secrets? Take the quick Relationship Scale assessment to see exactly where things stand—and what's keeping you from real connection. Trey's Table Episode 324: Harvard's Broken Promise **
The hard-fought plan to restore salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest has been abruptly derailed, threatening one of the most significant tribal and environmental agreements in decades. In this episode of In The Newsroom, Tony Schick of Oregon Public Broadcasting breaks down how the Trump administration scrapped a landmark deal that would have paved the way for breaching four Snake River dams to save salmon populations. The agreement, developed under the Biden administration with tribes, states, and environmental groups, paused decades of litigation in exchange for bold steps: river restoration, hatchery investment, and renewable energy projects led by tribal nations. The goal was to replace the dams' hydropower with solar, wind, and storage solutions, giving salmon a shot at recovery while meeting rising energy demands. Schick explains how the deal began to unravel even before the administration change, with funding delays and personnel exits signaling trouble. Tribes now face yet another broken promise—despite holding treaty rights to fish in waters increasingly devoid of fish. With legal battles likely to return, this story underscores how fragile progress can be when politics collide with ecological urgency.waterloop is a nonprofit news outlet exploring solutions for water sustainability.

Overpromise & underdeliver – Another broken promise of the NI Executive's Programme for Government
We recently heard about the “Unite 4 Veterans” rally, June 6th in Washington DC, where vets from around the country will make their voices heard in the loudest way possible … with the legendary Irish punk band The Dropkick Murphys. We spoke with Unite4Vets coalition members Army veterans Will Attig and Chris Purdy. Together they sounded the alarm about recent VA cuts without regard to the second order effects on veterans who rely on these programs. In a recent statement, Unite 4 Veterans said, “The Unite 4 Veterans Coalition stands in firm opposition to recent actions and proposals from the White House that amount to political theater at the direct expense of our nation's veterans … The administration's proposal to eliminate more than 80,000 positions from the VA and terminate thousands of jobs held by veterans and their families in the federal workforce is a betrayal. Veterans make up more than a third of the federal workforce. Cutting their positions while simultaneously gutting the VA staff that manages transition programs like the G.I. Bill and VA vocational rehabilitation is not about efficiency, it's neglect! This administration's priorities could not be clearer: spend over $50 million on a military parade while slashing programs like the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program—a proven resource that kept over 17,000 vulnerable veteran families housed. This is not sound policy; it is political optics at the expense of those who've sacrificed the most.” We also discuss the combat connection veterans have to Boston's legendary punk band The Dropkick Murphys, and how they've always been huge supporters of first responders, veterans and America's often ignored working class. The third in our series of guest episodes features a discussion between CEO of Releaf, Tim Kirby, and Robert Jappie, Partner Fieldfisher's Regulatory Group. Tim and Robert discuss Together, they explore the disconnect between the UK's 2018 rescheduling of medical cannabis and the lack of meaningful access for patients today. Robert outlines the legal and regulatory hurdles that continue to obstruct progress, while Tim highlights the everyday impact these roadblocks have on clinics and patients. The episode also delves into the rise of self-medication and the persistent use of illicit sources. Tim and Robert examine the factors behind this trend, from affordability and education to stigma and patient trust, despite the existence of a legal framework. Finally, they unpack the complex compliance landscape for cannabis clinics in the UK. From advertising restrictions to tight prescribing protocols, the conversation reveals how clinics like Releaf build patient trust while navigating a shifting and often restrictive regulatory environment.
A client working on making amends said to me "I made a promise I couldn't keep no matter how hard I tried! I left them hurt and me with guilt and shame." Are you tired of the broken trust, damaged relationships, shredded hope and shattered dreams? In todays' episode we look at the impact of promises we've broken and how we can become someone who under promises and over delivers.
Alice Rothchild's path to becoming an anti-Zionist Jew took many years, many hard conversations, and required a lot of critical self-reflection. But she is part of a growing, powerful chorus of Jewish voices around the world speaking out against Israel's Occupation of Palestine and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians—and she is urging others to join that chorus. “The time is long overdue for liberal Zionists to find the courage to take a long hard look at their uncritical support for the actions of the Israeli state as it becomes increasingly indefensible and destabilizing, a pariah state that has lost its claim to be a so-called democracy (however flawed) that is endangering Jews in the country and abroad as well as Palestinians everywhere,” Rothchild writes in Common Dreams. In the latest installment of The Marc Steiner Show's ongoing series “Not in Our Name,” Marc speaks with Rothchild about her path to anti-Zionism, the endgame of Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza, and the need to liberate Jewish identity from the Zionist state of Israel.Alice Rothchild is a physician, author, and filmmaker with an interest in human rights and social justice. Today's Talmud page, Makkot 15, asks a fascinating question: Are there any transgressions for which there's no punishment? It's a conundrum we've all faced when we vowed, say, to go to the gym and never did. What, if any, should be the consequences for promises unfulfilled? Listen and find out.

Disability Series, Episode #1 of 4. How and when scientists, doctors, and society started conceiving of the physical and emotional components of same-sex desire as a psychiatric condition of the mind? This was neither an ancient belief nor a postmodern (aka, post-1950) one, and it wasn't an exclusively American phenomenon either. Rather, the classification of same-sex desire as a “disorder” had its roots in the foundations of psychiatry as a profession in the 19th century. Over the last 100+ years, that classification impacted individuals all across the world. You've heard of Sigmund Freud, whose work in the 1920s standardized a form of talk therapy that sought to interpret actions, thoughts, and desires through a particular lens of analysis. “Psychoanalysis,” though short-lived as a psychiatric practice, was certainly part of the longer-term framing of queerness and transness as “mental illness.” But Freud is just the tip of the iceberg. Today we're digging into the history and relationship between psychiatry and sexuality; the scientific theories of sexuality that helped shape modern ideas about the relations between gender, genitals, desire, and identity; and the consequences of the medicalization of sexuality. Tony Leon joins John Maytham to critique the ANC’s last-minute budget negotiations. He argues that the turmoil could have been avoided had the party honoured the June 2024 statement of intent signed under the Government of National Unity. Leon discusses Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s decision to bypass GNU signatories, the implications for coalition trust, and what the budget wrangling reveals about the ANC’s governance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Representatives from Russia and Ukraine will be in meetings to try to hammer out details of a ceasefire on Monday. But peace is still a long way off.For starters it's only a partial ceasefire—no strikes on energy infrastructure. It's only for 30 days. And the Ukrainians and Russians aren't even meeting with each other. The U.S. will be a go-between.One of the biggest things working against a new agreement, is what happened after Ukraine's last agreement with Russia. And the ones before that.Ukraine says it won't trust a promise from Russia. It needs security guarantees. To understand why, you've got to go back to the birth of independent Ukraine. For sponsor-free episodes of Consider This, sign up for Consider This+ via Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Hi everyone, I'm James. And I'm Drew.Welcome to Graphic Support Group. It's kind of crazy to think that this podcast has been going on for over three years. When Drew brought his idea of Graphic Support Group as a creative collective, we both thought a podcast would be a fun first project to work on. But neither of us had any idea we'd create something that would resonate with so many other people and have such staying power. We really appreciate all the support and interest in the podcast over the years. And as we say in our Instagram profile, we are here for you. That means we'd love to hear from you for anything at all. Responses, questions, recommendations, suggestions, anything. Reminder, the hotline is always open.We have a new number since Google Voice decided to expire our old one. The new number is +1-929-277-1941.And you can always reach out to us via email, which is help@graphicsupportgroup.com. Don't hesitate to reach out for any reason. You can also DM us on Instagram. And last but not least, you can also send us a message through Substack where you can subscribe and get all our updates. We're at graphicsupportgroup.substack.com.We really look forward to hearing from you, and we really mean that, so please don't hesitate to reach out.We have a lot of new ideas in store for year four. And we plan to engage more with our audience and community to get a better idea of what this podcast means to everyone and help us determine what else Graphic Support Group could become. Thanks again to all our guests over the years and a big thanks to all of our listeners. We really appreciate the support from you all, the calls, likes, messages, and the generosity overall. It really means a lot for us to get some support in that way as well.A seriously big thank you. And so with that, we have a special mini episode where we're finally replying to one of our favorite calls we ever received on the podcast. We know that this response is now years delayed, but we still felt like we owed it to Berlin's number one graphic support group fan to respond and follow up on our word.Again, we are very sorry about the delay getting back to you. I think by now you received the t-shirt that you talk about in the call after a series of shipping fiascos where the shirt was returned from Germany back to the U.S. And then I had to send it again. I think that took several months, so I hope you got it. And please know that we value your time, your support, and your enthusiasm. And thank you again for the kind words. With that, please enjoy Berlin's number one graphic support group fan. Jonathan Rauch asserts that as the American Church has become increasingly concerned with the culture war and politics, it has become secularized and unappealing to its members, who are abandoning it. The result is a country increasingly spiritually adrift, churches distracted from their core missions, and a nation turning to politics as a substitute. He is the author of Cross Purposes: Christianity's Broken Promise with Democracy
Jeremy Corbell (investigative filmmaker and podcast co-host, “Weaponized” ) joins Chris Cuomo to discuss the Trump administration's handling of unauthorized drone incursions over U.S. military bases and the broader secrecy surrounding unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). Corbell reveals how, despite Trump's promises to expose government cover-ups, his administration maintained the same lack of transparency as those before him. Cuomo and Corbell unpack the mystery of the drone incidents, the failures to provide public answers, and why institutional secrecy around UAPs continues to thrive—regardless of who's in office.
