Every year around this time, the ritual begins anew. The weather cools off, the leaves change color, and Christians start arguing about Halloween. Many people love this night. It gives them an excuse to host parties, kick off the holiday spending season, and provide economic stimulus for the dental industry. Others use it as an excuse to flirt with things much darker than plastic skeletons and creative jack-o'-lanterns. Too many adults use Halloween as an excuse to throw out common standards of modesty. What is the history behind Halloween? What's all the decoration and tradition really about? Is there something spiritual behind all the ghoulishness? When I was a kid, a series of comic-book-style tracts went around claiming that Halloween was a pagan holiday called Samhain, when ancient druids used to carry out human sacrifice under a full moon. That story, as even modern pagans who love Halloween admit, is mostly made up. The very name “Halloween” means “holy evening.” It was a throwback to when Catholic Christians prepared for the Feast of All Saints on November 1st. A few years back, Kirk Cameron urged Christians to make the most of Halloween's Christian origins, and to throw “the biggest Halloween party on (the) block.” Not only is it a great way to make fun of the devil, he argued, but it offers Christians a wonderful opportunity to proclaim Jesus' victory over sin and death to our neighbors. Our Christian forebears might have agreed. In his book, For the Glory of God, historian Rodney Stark argued that Christians in the early centuries of the Church frequently reacted to pagan practices like fortune-telling, alchemy, and even sorcery, by not taking them seriously. Augustine, for example, myth-busted astrology by pointing out how twins born under the same star sign were often very different in personality. St. Boniface taught that “to believe in ‘witches' is un-Christian.” Pope Gregory the Great even advised a missionary to Britain to destroy idols but to re-purpose pagan temples for Christian worship. A few years ago, Steven Wedgeworth offered another perspective in an article at The Calvinist International. After providing a helpful overview of the history of Halloween, he concluded that though there are echoes of paganism and Christian re-purposing in Halloween, the holiday of today, especially the costumes and trick-or-treating, is a recent invention. Like the commercialized secular Christmas, Halloween as we know it has more to do with department stores than druids. No matter what day it is, Paul's instructions in Philippians 4 should guide our celebrations. Christians should think on “whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable.” Axe-murderer get-ups and sexually provocative costumes fail to pass that test. And, we should consider Paul's teaching on meat sacrificed to idols in 1 Corinthians 8. Idol worship is always wrong, but eating meat sacrificed to idols is a matter of conscience. If you are unable to participate in Halloween with a clear conscience, there are plenty of other things to celebrate this time of year, from Reformation Day to All Saints Day, to the beauty of fall's changing colors, to, as always, the sovereignty of God and the victory of Christ over everything. And, if kids will be knocking at your door on Halloween night, you can always put on a wool tunic and nail 95 Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to your door. If you and your kids do enjoy a little spooky stuff, just remember, as Paul Pastor wrote over at Christianity Today, “monsters should point us to God.” “No story worth listening to,” he says, “lacks a villain. And no villain worth fighting lacks monstrosity.” No story has more monstrous villains or darker darkness than Scripture. We do have an enemy, an enemy of our souls. At the same time, Scripture describes evil as not just “out there,” but also in our own hearts. And yet, evil does not have the final say, either in the world or in our own hearts. Evil is a real foe, but because of Jesus Christ, evil is a defeated foe. So, fear not. For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org. This Breakpoint originally aired October 31, 2014.
Brian chats with Paul Pastor, a media and tech entrepreneur who currently serves as Chief Business Officer and Co-Founder of Quickplay. In the episode, Paul shares his experience transitioning from media to the tech industry -- and how he immediately noticed and began to address a lack of diversity in the latter. He also discusses the business case for diversity and opens up about the lessons he learned from a previous failed business venture. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses follow personal motivations. Mission-driven businesses take a step back and follow the personal motivations of their founders, according to Paul. When he created Quickplay, he had three big drivers and motivators behind the vision for the company: Do you see a big idea and want to chase it? Can you continue to drive impact in the industry that you have? How do you make sure you keep a sense of responsibility that comes with being an entrepreneur? Paul and his co-founders stayed true to their answers as they created a company that builds out the technology behind streaming services. Paul's also guided Quickplay to a broader LGBTQ+ ally-driven initiative, which gives the company an even greater sense of mission and purpose. “I think about how do I, from a company perspective, not only make an impact on a specific technology or specific television show distribution, but also how do I step up as an individual and how do we step up as a company and say there's other things that are important about the way we do business,” he said. Make a business case for diversity. When Paul moved into the tech industry, he immediately noticed the lack of diversity. Walking around a trade show, it was clear that the majority of attendees were white or Indian men. In response, he's made it a focus for Quickplay to create space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies in the tech industry -- and the result is a positive impact on the business. “At the National Association of Broadcasters conferences, we had a co-sponsorship with Google Cloud, and what I loved was not only did we have a huge number of attendees but it became an event that people wanted to go to and co-sponsor,” Paul said. “Anil Jain from Google stood up and said, ‘This is the company that shares the values of how we like to operate, and that's the type of company we want to do business with.'” Culture always wins. Not only can diversity lead to business opportunities, but it can also create a work culture that allows employees to do their best work alone and together. As a result, the company creates a strong, safe, and respectful culture that allows it to thrive. But Paul emphasizes that culture has to stop at the top. “When a leader walks in the room, everybody else is looking at how that leader walks into the room,” Paul said. “Your presence, how you communicate, how you talk to others matters because it sets up how others mimic those behaviors and fundamentally take on the positive and negative aspects of the company.” Find product-market fit quickly and cheaply. The first gate for a business to cross on its way to success is product-market fit. Paul emphasized that it's important to find product-market fit as quickly and cheaply as possible because once you can show fit and market size, you can find capital to grow. “It takes a lot of discipline to make sure you follow through those proper phases,” Paul said. “We've clearly agreed and defined our goals, so we're not spending a lot of time debating the next step because we've already defined where we're headed.” Resources + Links Quickplay: Website, Twitter, LinkedIn Paul's Social Media: LinkedIn Brian's Social Media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and certified financial planner who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. Series 12 of The Night School of the Faber Institute explores, Guest by Guest, month by month, how it happens that when evil has gotten into the fabric of a culture (e.g., American culture), the soul/a person instinctively “retracts” in revulsion (very often unnoticed by a person - this retraction). That is, evil is a toxin that corrupts things so central to the soul's essence that the soul/a person “pulls back” and finds/ establishes a defensive position in relation to that evil (doing this most often without noticing that he or she has done this). The soul/a person seeks a “safe” spot (i.e., a way of understanding himself or herself) in which to hide, something which Becker powerfully describes as “the vital lie”. When this is happening on a broad front in the people of an unhealthy culture, those people/that nation (government, church, social class) will quickly lose track of what being a human being actually is. Not knowing who we are at this fundamental level of awareness leaves us too able to be manipulated to “conform” to someone else's “safe” version - vital lie - of personhood.

Dr. Michael B Knight answers the question Paul asks, "Would your faithfulness to me be nullified if I mess up?" Romans 3:3
Everyday we are reminded about how many people have died, how many people could die, how many people are sick, and how many people could become sick. Every time we turn on the news, the scales tip in favor of the bad news...so much more then good news. Maybe the news for you is bad; you've lost your job, you are sick, or have a loved one who is sick---or even worse. If this is you, please know this: You are loved. You are prayed for. You are not alone. No matter where you find yourself today, whether hurt, despair, confusion or just plain weariness, we all long for some hope. In this sermon Pastor Tom Steele and his brother Paul (Pastor at Bethlehem Free Methodist Church in Austin, Minnesota) will talk about how the resurrection of Jesus can give you hope. Hope in your relationships. Hope in your everyday work. And hope to even overcome the fear of death. Isn't hope something you really need? Take a few minutes and give it a listen. We hope you find it helpful!

Part 2 of the series "Friends For The Journey"
The Night School is an adventurous exercise of greater depth and reflectivity than is normal for most people. For each of these gatherings, we welcome a profound thinker, explorer, philosopher, painter, poet, theologian or mystic from the ancient or nearer past. For example, we may invite Aristotle (4th century BCE) to attend, and through some short and penetrating texts from his writings to give us his best thoughts on friendship. This monthly habit offered by the Faber Institute is meant to be enjoyable, startling at times (surprised by the wisdom we have available to us if we know how to read such authors), and to be an experience of deep thought skillfully invited and engagingly presented. For Session II of Series VI, Paul Pastor introduces Scottish author George MacDonald and the idea of a childlike image.

We are continuing our journey on Paul. We are talking about the Biography of Paul. There is much we can learn from the life of the apostle Paul. Far from ordinary, Paul was given the opportunity to do extraordinary things for the kingdom of God. The story of Paul is a story of redemption in Jesus Christ and a testimony that no one is beyond the saving grace of the Lord. However, to gain the full measure of the man, we must examine his dark side and what he symbolized before becoming “the Apostle of Grace.” Paul’s early life was marked by religious zeal, brutal violence, and the relentless persecution of the early church. Fortunately, the later years of Paul’s life show a marked difference as he lived his life for Christ and for the advancement of His kingdom. Paul was actually born as Saul. He was born in Tarsus in Cilicia around AD 1–5 in a province in the southeastern corner of modern-day Tersous, Turkey. He was of Benjamite lineage and Hebrew ancestry (Philippians 3:5–6). His parents were Pharisees—fervent Jewish nationalists who adhered strictly to the Law of Moses—who sought to protect their children from “contamination” from the Gentiles. Anything Greek would have been despised in Saul’s household, yet he could speak Greek and passable Latin. His household would have spoken Aramaic, a derivative of Hebrew, which was the official language of Judea. Saul’s family were Roman citizens but viewed Jerusalem as a truly sacred and holy city (Acts 22:22-29).

Today we are going on a New Journey and Talking about The Life Of Paul. Come with me on this journey. Paul was actually born as Saul. He was born in Tarsus in Cilicia around A.D. 1–5 in a province in the southeastern corner of modern day Tersous, Turkey. He was of Benjamite lineage and Hebrew ancestry. His parents were Pharisees—fervent Jewish nationalists who adhered strictly to the Law of Moses—who sought to protect their children from “contamination” from the Gentiles. Anything Greek was despised in Saul’s household, yet he could speak Greek and passable Latin. His household spoke Aramaic, a derivative of Hebrew, which was the official language of Judea. Saul’s family were Roman citizens but viewed Jerusalem as a truly sacred and holy city. The pivotal passage in Paul’s story is Acts 9:1-22, which recounts Paul’s meeting with Jesus Christ on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus, a journey of about 150 miles. Saul was angered by what he had seen and filled with murderous rage against the Christians. Before departing on his journey, he had asked the high priest for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for permission to bring any Christians (followers of “the Way,” as they were known) back to Jerusalem to imprison them. On the road Saul was caught up in a bright light from heaven which caused him to fall face down on the ground. He hears the words, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” He says, “Who are you Lord?” Jesus answers directly and clearly, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (vv. 4-5). As an aside, this might not have been Saul’s first encounter with Jesus, as some scholars suggest that young Saul might have known of Jesus and that he might have actually witnessed His death.

This is part two of our discussion on the Christian Ideal. Tim, Jon and their colleague Paul Pastor continue their discussion on redefining and reimagining holiness. In the first part of the episode (0-11:45), they discuss what divine life looks like according to Old Testament authors and Peter in 2 Peter 1. The guys ponder on whether holiness is an attribute someone has, or if it is someone's nature. Then (12:00-20:00 ) they ask how are people supposed to participate in the divine life? They discuss how to best reframe holiness, from a word that conjures up stiff, uptight religion (like SNL's Church Lady), to a word that excites and inspires people with the possibility of living a transcendent and abundant life. Finally, (20:01-end) the guys talk about why we often stand in awe when we meet celebrities and some words that could be used as synonyms instead of holiness. They also ask what does living spellbound or enchanted with God's spirit look like? Thank you to all our supporters! A Snapshot into the Life of Paul - Pastor Dave September 17, 2017 by New Hope Chapel Norwell
This is the first episode in a two part discussion on the Christian “Ideal.” What is the Christian Ideal? That’s exactly what we ask. Why does it seem that humanity has an inner drive to find something transcendent? What is it that we’re all searching for and hoping to attain? In other words, why aren’t things a little more rad in our day to day? The ancient Hebrew authors of the Bible also wrestled with these questions. They often used the word “holiness” to describe the quest for the ideal life. But today “holiness” is a confusing and loaded word. Spoiler alert: The way the Hebrews understood holiness is not how we do in modern times. Tim, Jon, and a special guest, Paul Pastor hold an honest discussion asking why we all strive for something that seems just out of reach, and what that might have to do with God’s holiness. Thank you to all our supporters! None of this would be possible without you. Paul just released The Listening Day: Meditations on the Way, Volume One. In it are 91 reflections, meditations, and thougths on the bible and spirituality - you might call it a poetic devotional for those who think devotionals lack beauty and depth. This book is thoughtful, lyrical, and beautiful. I enjoyed my conversation with Paul, and I think you will, too.
