Movember started as a concept developed by Adam Garone, his brother Trav, and Luke Slattery fourteen years ago. It was founded out of a conversation to have men grow real moustaches and have real conversations about what's going on in their life. Adam Garone helped build The Movember Foundation into one of the most innovative and impactful charities created this millennium, working to change (literally and figuratively) the face of men's health. Movember has funded 1,200 men’s health programs in 21 countries, achieving significant breakthroughs in the way prostate and testicular cancer is diagnosed and treated. The movement is also focused on male suicide, which kills at least one man, every minute of every day. In the first interview of this season, our host Adam Garone sits down with filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. From the times he slept in a hammock to fund his dreams to what he now teaches his sons about being a man, Morgan tells Adam about key moments and decisions in his life. Here, they dig deeper into the man behind (and face of) the fast food hit, SuperSize Me. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With a background in both marketing and the military, Australian native Adam Garone's career took a left turn in 2003 when his brother challenged him to grow out a mustache. The two wondered if they could bring the mustache back in vogue and, in the process, both raise awareness for men's health, and fundraise for prostate cancer research. Thus began the Movember movement. The Movember challenge is simple: men begin November 1st clean shaven and, for the next 30 days, grow out their mustaches while seeking out sponsorship for their efforts. The proceeds go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation as well as Livestrong. In 2011, Movember raised $126 million in 14 countries. As Movember's CEO from the start, Adam built the company into one of the most innovative and impactful charities created this millennium, changing the face (both literally and figuratively) of men's health, and in the process, creating a cult brand that inspired a global movement. As part of an IVY Ideas Night at Movember's LA office, Adam shared his incredible story with IVY's Sarah Zapp, and showed IVY members how to draw on their passion and resilience to overcome even the toughest obstacles and make a difference in the world. On the Brand Storytelling podcast, we are joined by Movember co-founder Adam Garone who is a keynote speaker at the World Marketing & Sales Forum this year in Melbourne. In the episode we discuss the Movember story, achieving goals and the emotional content that can engage an audience and make them act. Movember is a global organisation committed to changing the face of men's health and helping them to lead happier and longer lives. No doubt you've heard of Movember but I bet you don't know the story behind it and the man who founded it, a former Austrailian Army Special Forces Commando. Adam Garone, joins me to talk about the current state of men's health, how Movember has raised over $730 million towards cancer and men's health research, and how you can help put an end to prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's mental health issues. Adam Garone Adam Garone is the founder of Movember and has turned it into one of the most innovative and impactful charities created this millennium, working to change the face of men's health. Behind the scenes, under Adam’s leadership, Movember is changing the way cancer research is done by requiring and facilitating collaboration not just at a national level but at a global level, something never before achieved in the cancer sector. In 2013, 2014, 2015 the Movember Foundation was named in the Top 100 Best NGOs in the world by the Global Journal out of over 1.5 million charities. Not only is Adam the founder of Movember, he also spent nine years of service as an officer in the Australian Army, where he was selected and served with the Commando Regiment in the special forces. To date, 6 million fundraisers and 18 million donors have joined the Movember movement, that together have raised over $730 million. Movember has funded 1,000 men’s health programs in 21 countries, achieving significant breakthroughs in the way prostate and testicular cancer is diagnosed and treated. This will lead us to a time when we have effectively cured these cancers and the side effects of treatment are minimized. In 2016 Movember was awarded Cult brand of the year, in 2013 Adam was awarded the GQ Australia Man of the Year, in 2009 the Melbourne Business School Outstanding Alumnus Award, and in 2008 Enrst & Young Australian Entrepreneur Of The Year. When better than Easter to talk about...yes, "eggs," but also how a guy, his brother and a friend came up with the drunken idea of throwing goofy mustache parties and when they got really popular did something completely unexpected. That's what happened to Movember's Adam Garone and his unexpected move was to connect the youthful mustache-growing popularity to the crotchety world of not-for-profit causes like Prostate Cancer Research.

Lance: "We’re building a global movement, and we’re going to win.” Is Lance Armstrong on the Roadto Rocking a ‘Stache? He will be if Lance Armstrong Foundation CEO Doug Ulman has any say in the matter. On today’s debut of the LiveStrong Global Cancer Campaign Series, Doug chats with Adam Garone about cancer-awareness efforts in Adam’s home nation of Australia – where Lance is making his return to pro cycling. In 2003, Adam co-founded Movember, a charity event to help raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. As an emblem of his efforts, he grew a bushy mustache. By November 2008, the annual event had grown to include blokes around the globe. “I’ll make you a deal: Since I’m a cancer survivor and since my dad had prostate cancer, I’ll [grow a mustache],” Doug tells Adam. “I’ve never rocked a mustache, so I’ll do it in ’09.”“And we need to get Lance on as well,” says Adam.“Exactly. I figure if I can do it, I can convince him. It’s the off-season, so that’s a good time,” says Doug. Adam is the first is a series of cancer-awareness bloggers who will be interviewed on the show. Next month, Lance himself – to kick off the U.S. leg of his campaign – will chat with American bloggers here on BlogTalkRadio. After that, the world’s greatest bicycle racer is off to Belgium for the Tour of Flanders (April 5), then onto France for the Tour de France (July 4-26). All the while, Lance will be bringing his cancer-awareness-raising conversations with local bloggers to BlogTalkRadio.
