Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz joins host Amanda Borschel-Dan for today's episode. This morning, Hamas released a statement saying that Israel’s military plans to conquer Gaza City show its “blatant disregard” for efforts to broker a ceasefire and hostage release deal in the nearly two-year conflict. As Israel continues to weigh the partial, phased truce proposal accepted by the terror group on Sunday, we hear about the various forms of backlash faced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- for both the Gaza City op and for the possibility of ending the war without achieving all war goals. As a slew of international nations announce their potential readiness to recognize a Palestinian state in September, a recent poll found that a 58 percent majority of Americans believe that every country in the United Nations should recognize Palestine as a nation. The issue of a "two-state solution" couldn't be farther from most Israelis' minds. Horovitz delves into why the flirting with recognizing Palestine -- now, during this war -- is drawing such passion from Israeli leadership, including Netanyahu in his dealings with his Australian counterpart.Check out The Times of Israel's ongoing liveblog for more updates. Welcoming Martin Rohner, Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), to Purposely Podcast to share how finance—when aligned with purpose—can drive lasting, positive change for people and the planet.Martin and his team lead a global network of independent banks committed to using money to support social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic resilience. His role takes him to communities around the world, from Europe to Africa, where he sees first-hand how values-based banking is creating real-world impact.During a recent trip, he reflected on his time in Uganda—where, despite global pressures like inflation and food insecurity, he encountered a nation full of energy and possibility. “It was energising to see what's possible when access to finance supports resilience and growth,” he said.Martin explained that values-based banks don't see finance as neutral. Every dollar—whether saved, spent, or invested—has an impact. These banks choose to channel capital into organisations and projects that contribute to a healthier environment and stronger communities. He encouraged individuals to consider the role their money plays. “Where your money sits matters,” he said. “It's not just earning interest—it's shaping the future.”Today, values-based banks operate in more than 44 countries. For anyone looking to make a shift, Martin suggests starting by learning more—whether it's switching to a local mutual or using resources like gabbv.org to find mission-aligned options. He also addressed common concerns around financial returns. “If a system delivers strong returns but leaves people hungry or the climate in crisis, that's not success,” he said. “Good finance creates long-term value—for people, communities, and ecosystems.”Martin shared a compelling example: building design. Constructing a building with sustainability in mind can deliver decades of positive impact—reducing emissions, lowering costs, and improving wellbeing. “But if we build only for short-term gain, the harm can last for generations.”His message is clear: finance has the power to either reinforce harmful systems or support transformation. The values-based banking movement shows that doing good and doing well can go hand in hand—and that money, used wisely, can shape a better future.

What If Sober Was the New Cool? Breaking the Wine Culture Narrative with Kim BellasThis episode of Asking for a Friend is sponsored by Better Help. https://betterhelp.com/askingforafriendIs wine really the answer to midlife stress—or have we just been sold that story? In this episode of Asking for a Friend, I sit down with Kim Bellas, founder of the global movement Sober is the New Cool, to talk about what happens when midlife women challenge the “mommy juice” narrative and rethink their relationship with alcohol. At 52, Kim gave up wine—not because she had to, but because her son's epilepsy meds meant he couldn't drink. In a moment of clarity (wine glass in hand), she realized the message she was sending and committed to going sober for 3 months in solidarity. That was 12 years ago. What started as a short-term decision became a full-blown transformation—one that led to better sleep, stronger confidence, Fashion Week appearances (yes, really!), and a worldwide community of women just like her. This conversation will speak to any woman who's ever thought:“I don't have a problem, but maybe I drink more than I want to.”“I'm curious what life would be like without wine.”“I want to feel better, sleep better, and show up better—but without feeling judged.”✨ Whether you're sober-curious, alcohol-free, or simply sick of feeling like you need a drink to relax, this episode is your permission slip to explore something different.

After launching a global anti-trafficking movement in his teens, Chris Schrader didn't settle down—he leveled up.In Part Two, the founder of the 24 Hour Race draws parallels between navigating the Gobi Desert and leading high-growth businesses across continents. From dropping out of Harvard to leading expeditions and scaling software companies, Chris shares why building teams isn't about maximizing your strongest players—it's about supporting your weakest. And why sometimes, real leadership means being the “secretary of the team,” not the star. This episode goes beyond business tactics and into the mindset behind meaningful leadership. It's a deep dive into servant leadership, self-doubt, ruthless decision-making, and how to chase your personal North Star—even if you never reach it.Key Highlights of Our Interview:When ISIS Threats and Identity Crises Collide“Some challenges are existential—like not knowing what we are. Others are urgent—like whether to cancel an event after a terror threat.”The Expedition Analogy: Climbing Unmapped Peaks“Trying to grow an organization is like summiting a mountain no one's climbed before—you'll miss things, reroute, and sometimes have to turn back.”The Gobi Desert and the North Star“You navigate by stars knowing you'll never touch them. That's what great goals are—worth chasing even if you never arrive.”The Secret to Team Performance“You're not defined by your best players. You're defined by your weakest. Great leaders either lift them—or make hard calls.”Servant Leadership Isn't Just Humility—It's Precision“As a leader, I'm the expedition secretary. My job is to clear the path so my team can outperform me in every way.”When to Cut Loose and When to Coach“Too many leaders let low performers drag down morale. In expeditions, that mistake can get someone killed. In business, it just slowly kills momentum.”The Myth-Building Side of Leadership“Sometimes leadership means becoming something aspirational—a myth people can believe in. But you still serve the mission, not yourself.”Between What You Want to Be and What You Need to Be“I want to be the first man to circumnavigate the moon. But I need to be a good son, a great partner, a reliable chairman—and pay my sous-vide-powered electricity bill.”The Hardest Impact Isn't Global—It's Personal“It's easy to romanticize Musk or Zuckerberg. Sometimes the biggest movements begin with a simple question: What can I do?In Part One, Chris Schrader, founder and executive chairman of the 24 Hour Race, shares the unfiltered origin story behind the world's largest student-run movement to fight human trafficking. What started as a walk across England in memory of a friend became a 24-hour endurance race, then a global platform that's raised over US$20 million across 25 cities. But Chris doesn't romanticize it. He breaks down how it all came together—messy, accidental, and fueled more by belief than a master plan. From skeptical school principals to six-figure fundraisers, this episode explores what happens when students stop waiting for permission and start building real impact from the ground up.Key Highlights of Our Interview:The Walk That Started It All“Six months after a joke about walking across England, we were actually doing it—and raised HK$200,000 for rare diseases.”From Expedition to Endurance Sport“We turned a 150km trek across Hong Kong into a run-swim-row challenge—just to prove what students could really do.”The Birth of the 24 Hour Race“A simple idea: teams running a 24-hour relay. No elite athletes, just anyone willing to push themselves for a cause.”Why He Chose Human Trafficking—Without Knowing Much About It“It wasn't the topic at first. It was the intensity. We needed a cause strong enough to power people through the pain.”Ignored by Schools, Backed by Students“Principals laughed us out of the room. So we went straight to students—and they built the movement themselves.”From One-Off Event to Global Force“What was supposed to be a one-time race exploded. Within a year, we were oversubscribed and scaling city by city.”Beyond Fundraising: Creating Life-Defining Moments“It's not just money. Over a million young people have done the race. We want them to remember it when they're 80.”Why They Treat Charity Like a Marketplace“People come for the music, the sleepover, the fun—and that's fine. We win them over without preaching.”Raising Future Leaders, Not Just Dollars“Student directors interview NGOs, ask hard questions, and learn how to be real fiduciaries—not just fundraisers.”_____________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guest: Chris Schrader --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. In 1804, enslaved Haitians successfully overthrew French colonial rule and founded the world's first Black republic. But by 1825, the French returned and demanded Haiti to pay “reparations” for French financial losses, including the value of the lives of the formerly enslaved. With warships off its coast, Haiti was forced to agree to an indemnity debt, which totaled hundreds of millions in today's dollars, a ransom for freedom. Lasting for generations, this so-called independence debt was not just a financial burden hindering Haiti's development across all sectors, it was a calculated act of economic warfare where foreign funding replaced sovereignty, while the imperial west escalated its predation: repeated military invasions, embargoes, financial coercion, political interference, orchestrated coups, and installed puppet governments and dictators. From France's gunboat diplomacy, to US military occupation, to UN missions for “stabilisation” and the brutal suppression of justice movements, Haiti has been a laboratory for imperial control. But through it all, Haitian resistance persists marking Haiti as both a symbol and site of global injustice and revolutionary possibility. In this episode, we will hear from Haiti's former First Lady, Mildred Aristide, in her powerful speech at the 2025 Samuel Dash Conference on Human Rights, whose call for repair confronts colonialism's unfinished business.
Could redefining masculinity through the lens of Christlikeness transform not just individuals, but entire communities? Join us as we sit down with Robert Barriger, an ex-surfer from Southern California whose life took a radical turn during the Jesus Revolution. His journey took him all the way to Peru, where he and his wife Karen have established Camino de Vida, a church that has become a beacon of hope and change throughout Latin America. Robert shares his compelling story, painting a vivid picture of how faith and leadership intersect to create powerful transformations in people’s lives. As we reminisce about the cultural upheaval of the 1960s and 70s, parallels emerge with today's societal divisions, sparking a conversation on inclusivity and the role of churches in embracing those often marginalized. Robert reflects on historical and modern movements, like Calvary Chapel's open arms to youth in rebellion, and how his own church, Comunidad Vida in Lima, has grown amidst daunting challenges. His involvement in the Christian Men's Network underscores the power of focusing on positive developments even in regions often plagued by negative headlines, offering hope that good news can spring from the most unlikely places. This episode wraps up with a thought-provoking discussion on the importance of fatherhood and community, particularly as we face alarming trends among younger generations. We explore ideas of healthy masculinity and leadership, challenging traditional notions of success and competition. With insights from Robert's mentoring experiences across borders, we journey through the potential of faith-based communities to redefine strength, nurture future leaders, and ultimately offer solace and purpose in a rapidly changing world. What drives a marketing executive to walk 600 miles across England during a pandemic? For David Fenton, it began with gratitude for the hospital care his premature twins received 22 years earlier and transformed into something much bigger. In this episode David recounts his remarkable journey that took him through picturesque landscapes and challenging terrains as he navigated the shifting COVID lockdowns. But what struck him most wasn't the physical challenge or stunning views – it was the extraordinary generosity he encountered along the way. From pub owners offering free accommodation when hospitality was struggling to waitresses donating their tips, these acts of kindness planted the seed for something transformative.Inspired by this David set out to write about his walk in his latest book, 'Miles, Milestones and Memories' and this September,(2025), David's Challenge for Change invites people worldwide to walk, run, cycle or swim, collectively aiming to cover Earth's circumference (41,000km) while supporting children's charities. The statistics driving this mission are sobering: 333 million children living in extreme poverty globally, a child dying every 10 seconds from malnutrition, and millions without access to education or support for disabilities. What makes this initiative unique is its inclusive approach combined with local impact. Anyone can participate – from octogenarians walking a mile to ultra-runners covering hundreds – and choose children's charities in their own communities. For businesses, it offers team-building opportunities while supporting communities where they operate. For individuals, it's a chance to improve health while making a meaningful difference.David's story reminds us that significant change often begins with simply putting one foot in front of another. Whether you're a dedicated walker seeking purpose, a company looking for meaningful team engagement, or someone wanting to support children's causes, Challenge for Change offers a framework to turn physical activity into global impact.Ready to be part of something bigger than yourself? Most people are focusing on how their bodies look, not how they feel—and it's holding them back.If you've ever declined an invitation because of how you felt about your body, avoided activities you love, or spent hours criticizing yourself in the mirror, this conversation is your wake-up call. In this episode, I sit down with Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement and Australian of the Year 2023, to break down why embracing your body isn't just about feeling better—it's about living better. We're tackling the biggest misconceptions about body image—like why focusing on appearance keeps us stuck, why self-love isn't fluffy but foundational, and how body acceptance actually leads to healthier behaviors than body criticism. Plus, we're getting into practical strategies for handling body commentary from family members, maintaining progress when you have a "wobbly moment," and why taking up space as a woman is so revolutionary.Taryn Brumfitt is an Australian filmmaker, author, and speaker internationally renowned for her work in promoting body acceptance. She is the founder of the Body Image Movement, a global initiative dedicated to transforming the way people think and speak about their bodies, encouraging self-acceptance and self-love.In 2023, Taryn was named Australian of the Year for her significant efforts in changing societal perceptions of body image and fostering positivity around self-image.You can learn more about her mission at https://www.bodyimagemovement.com/embrace-you/We Also Discuss:(01:00) Body Image and Self-Acceptance (03:27) Embracing Body Image and Self-Love(13:31) Empowering Body Acceptance Conversations(17:17) Transforming Body Image Through Reframing(26:14) Setting Boundaries for Positive Body Image(35:20) Journeying Towards Body Acceptance Together(43:27) Empowering Women(57:05) Spreading Love and Taking ActionThank You to Our Sponsors: Broads: Broads gives you structured, progressive training and a powerhouse community to keep you strong, consistent, and unstoppable. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Send us a textBen Akers never expected to become a Mental Health advocate. But when his childhood best friend Steve died by suicide 10 ago, everything changed. Confronted with the staggering reality that suicide is the biggest killer of men, Akers channeled his grief and advertising background into creating 'Talk Club' – a revolutionary approach to men's mental fitness that's now saving lives across the UK and beyond. At the heart of Talk Club's genius is stunning simplicity: "How are you? Out of 10?" This numerical scale gives men a framework to express their emotional state without struggling with what Akers calls "the foreign language of feelings." Where men typically respond with a reflexive "I'm fine," the number system creates an opening for honesty. "If you're a higher number and regularly a higher number," Akers explains, "you're mentally fit, you're mentally strong, and you're good for everyone around you."From its first meeting at Bristol Beer Factory in April 2019, Talk Club has expanded to 120+ venues nationwide with over 5,000 members. The organization has formed strategic partnerships, including creating Clearhead non-alcoholic beer, allowing men to gather in comfortable spaces without alcohol's potential mental health impacts. Every aspect of Talk Club reflects Akers' design philosophy: make it accessible, remove barriers, and speak directly to men as they are.The movement reframes mental health conversations through the lens of fitness rather than illness. Just as we congratulate someone for going to the gym, Akers wants mental health maintenance celebrated rather than questioned. He applies his personal philosophy – "Does it make you better?" – to every decision, encouraging men to evaluate relationships, work, and habits through this simple yet profound lens. Whether you're struggling personally, concerned about someone in your life, or simply interested in supporting mental fitness, visit talkclub.org today. As Akers proves through his work, sometimes the smallest questions can save the biggest lives.Find out more at talkclub.org or email hello@talkclub.org to get involved, donate, or start your own Talk Club.Tune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. Something incredible happened February 28th and March 1. Over 20,000 events took place across 183 countries, uniting believers in prayer, worship, and commissioning to reach the world with the gospel. Gather 25 was more than an event—it was a call to action for everybody, everywhere. Across the world, from living rooms in the U.S. to churches in Rwanda, from dorm rooms in Malaysia to arenas in South America, the church came alive. In this episode, Jennie reflects on what just took place and what happens next. If you've ever wondered what it looks like for God's people to move together, this is it. We are sharing highlights from teachers like Priscilla Shirer from North America, Pastor Charles Wandera from Africa, Louie Giglio live from Eastern Europe, Christine Caine from Western Europe, Luke DeJong live from Oceania, a powerful prayer from Nick and Pippa Gumbel and a closing moment from Jennie! “When I got my COVID vaccine, my reaction started within an hour, and it started with tingling down the same arm as my injection. It moved to my other arm, then it moved to my legs, and then it moved to my head, into my brain, and I had this horrific electrical, pulsating sensation through my body 24/7.”Brianne Dressen was left severely injured after participating in the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine trials. She's the co-founder of the nonprofit React19, which helps people impacted by COVID-19 vaccine injuries. React19 now advocates on behalf of over 36,000 people.“We can't be found in any kind of database that the public or anyone beyond the government can access,” she says. “All of the programs that we've developed, they work together in concert to build an avenue for healing for the people that literally have no avenue.”She's the subject of the new book “Worth a Shot?: Secrets of the Clinical Trial Participant Who Inspired a Global Movement.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
Elsa Stamatopoulou's Indigenous Peoples in the International Arena: The Global Movement for Self-Determination (Routledge 2025) provides a definitive account of the creation and rise of the international Indigenous Peoples' movement. In the late 1970s, motivated by their dire situation and local struggles, and inspired by worldwide movements for social justice and decolonization, including the American civil rights movement, Indigenous Peoples around the world got together and began to organize at the international level. Although each defined itself by its relation to a unique land, culture, and often language, Indigenous Peoples from around the world made an extraordinary leap, using a common conceptual vocabulary and addressing international bodies that until then had barely recognized their existence. At the intersection of politics, law, and culture, this book documents the visionary emergence of the international Indigenous movement, detailing its challenges and achievements, including the historic recognition of Indigenous rights through the adoption of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2007. The winning by Indigenous Peoples of an unprecedented kind and degree of international participation – especially at the United Nations, an institution centered on states – meant overcoming enormous institutional and political resistance. The book shows how this participation became an increasingly assertive self-expression and even an exercise of self-determination by which Indigenous Peoples could both benefit from and contribute to the international community overall – now, crucially, by sharing their knowledge about climate change, their approaches to development and well-being, and their struggles against the impact of extractive industries on their lands and resources. Written by the former Chief of the Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, this book will be of interest to researchers, teachers, students, advocates, practitioners, and others with interests in Indigenous legal and political issues. Elsa Stamatopoulou is Director of the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Program and Adjunct Professor in the Institute for the Study of Human Rights, the Department of Anthropology, and the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University, USA. Elsa is also Former (the first) Chief of the Secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (among other functions at the UN). When you hear the word revival, you might think of the spiritual movements from the past, like the Great Awakening. But next in this program, you will discover how God still works that way today. Join Chip and author Jennie Allen as they discuss her passion for uniting the global church to reach the lost and what you can do to make a difference.Main Points Key Takeaways: The vision of Gather25: A 25-hour global event uniting Christians worldwide in prayer, worship, repentance, and sharing stories of God's work. The urgency of the Great Commission: With billions still unreached with the gospel, the Church needs to unite and work together to fulfill Christ's command. The importance of personal spiritual health: Before we can effectively impact the world for Christ, we need to address our own spiritual needs and walk in freedom. The power of confession: Confessing our sins and struggles to God and trusted others breaks the enemy's power and leads to healing and wholeness. Highlights: Jennie's journey from IF:Gathering to the birth of Gather25, inspired by a dream and a desire to mobilize the global Church. The importance of unity and collaboration among Christians despite differing viewpoints on secondary issues. The need for urgency in fulfilling the Great Commission, recognizing that many are perishing without Christ. The role of technology and organizations like illumiNations in reaching the unreached with the gospel. In 2020, Utah mom & former teacher Brianne Dressen wanted to help her community through the pandemic, so she joined a clinical trial of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine – one of the first in the USA. But afterward, she says she developed such severe side effects, she began planning her own suicide to escape the “constant agony.” Within hours of beginning the trial, Brianne experienced adverse reactions including “blurred vision, a headache, ringing ears and vomiting” that worsened and required multiple hospitalizations. Now grappling with enormous medical expenses, Dressen is suing the pharma giant after it allegedly offered her a single payment of $1,243.30 in compensation despite her medical costs exceeding $400,000.
