Behaviour in schools and colleges is a complex issue, with various opinions and strict approaches, particularly in the UK. It can be challenging to establish consistency because of everything that's thrown at schools and colleges to deal with. Adele Bates, joins Dale today for a great discussion on ‘Leading behaviour in schools and colleges'. As a Behaviour and Education Specialist, Adele brings a wealth of experience to the podcast and draws on research experiences from around the world. It's not appropriate to bounce a ball in an English lesson, but if you bounce the same ball in a basketball lesson it's a good thing – it's all about context! Adele explains why behaviour is so complex because of its dependence on context. Rules, routines and boundaries are integral to school communities but the context of behaviour changes and therefore so do the rules, punishments etc. Listen to find out how to support young people with tools so they can learn how to manage their own behaviour to be appropriate in different contexts. Adele emphasises the importance of ensuring that staff have access to support and training to effectively address behaviour issues in a consistent manner. In this episode we speak with Rachel W – an abuse survivor who disclosed to staff at school when aged 14 after suffering years of abuse. Rachel talks powerfully about her story and the lessons schools and school staff can learn from it in order to improve safeguarding practice. Interviewed by pastoral specialist and teacher Adele Bates, Rachel discusses the impact of the abuse, including on her education and behaviour in school. She talks about her attempts to disclose and how she was finally rescued from her abuser. She discusses spotting the signs of abuse, the barriers to disclosure, how staff should handle disclosures – how we must respond – and what to do if you suspect a child is being abused or is at risk of harm. We also talk about the behaviour of children who are living with trauma and what staff should be aware of. Rachel has been writing about these themes in SecEd (https://bit.ly/seced-disclosure) and wanted to take part in this episode to help support school staff to know what to do in safeguarding situations. The podcast makes for uncomfortable listening at times but is essential listening for all those working with children in schools.

Where does this passion come from? One size doesn't fit all and there is no ‘one way' to do behaviour, but you do have some tried and tested approaches for managing behaviour, tell me about how you have developed those? When you have been engaging with schools in managing challenging behaviour, what have been some of the common misconceptions you have experienced about behaviour. You mentioned in an interview published on your website that during your teaching career a headteacher told you that you were doing ‘too much pastoral' which made you understandably angry why do you think that pastoral care can so often be sidelined and what changes do you want to see in schools to improve this? You said in an ideal world it wouldn't just be down to experts you wouldn't need to be an expert in behaviour because it would be woven into the school's ethos and pedagogy, how can schools be supported to become more confident in managing challenging behaviour? You can follow Adele on Twitter at @AdeleBatesZ and on LinkedIn at Adele Bates.  You can also check out her website  and YouTube channel for free tips and resources.  Adele's book is available to purchase in all your usual book stores/online libraries. You can follow me (Kat Cauchi) on Twitter at @ReallyschoolKCheck out #OPIP and #OfPrimaryImportance for more content.  If you are interested on coming on the show or have a topic suggestion, send me a DM!

Today I am speaking with behaviour specialist and volcano of positivity Adele Bates. As you will hear at the start of our conversation, I worked with Adele for a short period, and so I speak with experience when I say that the second you meet her, you immediately realise that you are dealing with an incredibly compassionate, thoughtful, unique human being. Adele has recently written a fascinating, down to earth, warts-and-all book called 'Miss I don't give a Sh*t: Engaging with Challenging Behaviour in Schools.' Here are some of the lovely things people have said about the book: “Looking for a breath of fresh air when it comes to behaviour management? Look no further. With wit and wisdom, passion and compassion, Adele Bates not only puts the relationships between teacher and young person at the heart of the educational endeavour, but also gives that young person a voice.” (Ian Gilbert) “Adele Bates has written a highly readable book brimming with practical ideas, exuberant optimism and encouragement of experimentation. She urges practitioners to see beyond the so-called bad behaviour to the human being in context. This is a book that celebrates the importance of reflection, empathy and care, including the all vital task of self-care.” (Melissa Benn) ‘This book offers an in-depth, detailed and nuanced overview of the subject of behaviour, with a particular focus on building relationships, helping pupils to feel safe and on teacher self-care. It is a must read book for all teachers, and will be particularly helpful for those working in the most challenging contexts, staff in alternative provision and those working with children who have SEND and SEMH.' (Sue Cowley) At just over an hour, this is a shorter episode than usual. But there is loads packed into this conversation and you will come away with practical ideas for how to work with young people who present with challenging behaviour in schools. As someone who has worked in schools in which dealing with behaviour was a daily challenge, I really wish Adele's book had been around when I entered the profession. When stand-up comedian Ian Smith read the headline "GIRL RESCUED" in his local paper, The Goole Times, he wasn’t expecting to read about a young girl trapped in a basketball hoop. The article went on to say that this was the third time in as many months that a girl had to be prized from the rim of a basketball hoop in his home town. Maybe this wasn’t your regular teenage horseplay in the local basketball courts - Ian wondered if something more sinister was going on. This is the story of his investigation into what happened, and more importantly, why it happened. It's not just a quest for the truth behind these "self-dunking" incidents but also a soul-searching examination of the lives of the teenagers of Goole and a probe into the psyche of people across the world who choose to squeeze themselves through small spaces. Ian leaves no stone unturned as he asks the tough (and not so tough) questions to guests including his local MP, the education specialist Adele Bates author of "Miss I Don't Give a Sh*t", comedian Jessica Fostekew and the world famous contortionist, Captain Frodo.
