In February 2020, #TinyVoiceTuesday came about on Twitter because Toria wanted to give people a voice – she wanted to ensure that no educationalist would go unheard.#TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites was then born to enable educationalists to have a forum to chat and get to know one another in a supportive arena. This occurs every week and can be found on Toria's twitter profile page (@Toriaclaire)She wanted to do more though! Having spoken on a few podcasts herself she wanted to be able to give this opportunity to others. So, Tiny Voice Talks – The Podcast was born! She created this podcast to give a voice to everyone in education. In it, Toria speaks to other passionate educators about current educational issues, key research and of course why it is so important that we continue to learn from one another. To find out more about who Toria is, listen to the introduction and remember to follow the podcast so that you don't miss out when a new episode is aired.

By being creative with how we develop those small and natural moments of curiosity, we can engage in conversations with our pupils and, importantly, spark, watch, listen and inspire. Who doesn't love a good question? Time is precious in the classroom but we can creatively use a picture, role play, a cube, a suitcase, anything to hook our learners in and, with a culture where curiosity is allowed to flourish, enable learners to grow, be independent and be curious. Sarah is currently a Year 4 leader in a 3 form primary, where she is part of the Senior Management Team. If you would like to contact Heather or have specific questions for her, she is very happy to have people email her on bitesizedpsychology@gmail.com.In the episode Heather discussed many things with Toria including the  'Twenty Discipline Mistakes even Great Parents Make' from the book: No Drama Discipline. The whole-brain way to calm the chaos and nurture your child's developing mind.,  by Daniel J. Siegel, MD and Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, Scribe,  She went through the first 12. Each is expanded upon in the book, which is primarily aimed at parents.1. Our discipline becomes consequence-based instead of teaching-based.2.We think that if we are disciplining we can't be warm and nurturing.3.We confuse consistency with rigidity.4. We talk too much.5.We focus too much on the behaviour and not enough on the why behind the behaviour.6. We forget to focus on how we say what we say.7.We communicate that our kids shouldn't experience big or negative feelings.8. We overreact, so our kids focus on our overreaction, not their own actions.9. We don't repair.10. We lay down the law in an emotional, reactive moment, then realize we've over reacted.11. We forget that our children may sometimes need our help making good choices or calming themselves down.12.We consider an audience when disciplining.13. We get trapped in power struggles.14. We discipline in response to our habits and feelings instead of responding to our individual child in that particular moment.15.We embarrass our kids by correcting them in front of others.16.We assume the worst before letting our kids explain.17.We dismiss our kid's experience.18. We expect too much.19. We let 'experts' trump our own instincts.20. We're too hard on ourselves.A message from Heather - It's not about scoring but I think mine is 17/20 for if I have ever made that mistake! Always reflecting and learning.Be kind to yourselves :)Heather also referred to The Social Discipline Window, originally by Daniel Glaser but cited in Restorative Practice, Building Relationships, Improving Behaviour and Creating Stronger Communities by Mark Finnis, Independent Thinking Press, 2021Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode please share it with others and I would love it if you would leave a review on Apple, Spotify or anywhere else. The Tiny Voices Talk book is out now . In this episode Toria talks to Jacqueline about nursery rhymes, their history and their importance for early learning today.  She also talks about the importance of phonological awareness and how this is different to phonics. As a teacher and researcher, Jacqueline talks about how her experience and research findings led her to develop and publish a book of rhymes for active learning today.Jacqueline is a mum, teacher, researcher, author and member of the British Psychological Society.  Jacqueline's social initiative led to the publication of Wizzy's Words, a book of rhymes for sharing with infants from birth (and before) and promoting holistic language and child development. To get in touch with Jacqueline email her at jaccqquie@gmail.com or visit www.wizzyswords.co.ukA note from Jacqueline following the episodeDiscerning phonological awareness from phonics is quite an enigma. Years ago, onset and rime (as discussed) would have been evident in classrooms and not just in the early years – with its links to spelling patternsThe syllabic and intra-syllabic boundaries are key – once a child has heard sounds, words, phrases, sentences i.e., language, they can say it then read it then write it (although my focus in on interactive sharing of rhymes via a book, I arranged for an audiobook of the book to be produced which is narrated – with a view to exposure to spoken word first)Perhaps the biggest caveat to synthetic phonics is its deference to phonemes and graphemes at the expense of onset and rime…  the child exposed naturally to onset and rime from birth and before school of course also has the vocabulary it derives from and is ready for phonics - as we know therein lies the need for research Please feel free to contact Jacqueline with any questions with respect to this or other elements of their chat if it's helpful.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode please share it with others and I would love it if you would leave a review on Apple, Spotify or anywhere else. In this episode, Toria talks to Sian Hardy about Literacy Hive, the open-access signposting website that she set up to help teachers navigate their way around the literacy resource landscape quickly and easily.Sian has worked for over 30 years in the children's book world in a variety of different roles. That breadth of experience made her aware of the many different resources and services available to support the teaching of literacy. Many teachers were simply unaware of the support available to them. Literacy Hive was created to help change that. From resources to support individual pupils to ways to bring authors and young readers together, Literacy Hive helps teachers connect with the wider world of books and reading and find the support they need to deliver an engaging literacy curriculum for all. Search over 300 resources covering all aspects of the literacy curriculum on the Literacy Hive website - www.LiteracyHive.orgLink your literacy curriculum to the wider world with the online Literacy Year calendar.Sign up for the Literacy Hive newsletter to receive regular news and updates straight to your inbox.Follow Literacy Hive on Twitter @LiteracyHive and Facebook Literacy HiveContact Sian at enquiries@literacyhive.org – she'd love to hear from you!Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode please share it with others and I would love it if you would leave a review on Apple, Spotify or anywhere else.
