Bait ul Maqdis – the sacred precinct in Palestine - is a blessed place in Islam – but today, we have downplayed maybe its centrality to what it means to a believer. From my last conversation with Dr Khalid El-Awaisi – where he controversially said that al Aqsa and these blessed lands have to be more clearly central to our faith and worldview – we want to explore how we practically manifest this nearness to Bait ul Maqdis and Palestine. We're more than halfway through the first season of Lost, and our latest episode "Hearts & Minds" reminds us why we love this show in the first place. This time we've got an episode focused on Boone (Ian Somerhalder) who wants so badly to be a hero that it makes him come as desperate, at least until he starts helping Locke with the hatch they've discovered. But when Boone wants to inform the others, Locke teaches him a lesson, causing Boone to go through a journey of self discovery on the island. You've also got Jin teaching Hurley to fish, Kate discovering Sun can speak english, Sayid getting closer to Shannon, and Jack starting to become weary of Locke. Join us as we explore the transformative power of God's love and the potential it holds for each of us. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, they kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. "I believe in the sanctity of childhood." That's something that Chris says in today's episode and I know each of us can stand behind that. Parenting in the Digital Age may be one of the hardest tasks we are up against with raising our children. "We have children with children's brains, children's development and we put them inside a space that was made for adults and then we get upset when they act like children. "...These spaces were not designed for them in the first place, they are by nature exploitative. They are not protective. We have to hunt for protection. And that's the part that's so difficult and maddening. I want us to embrace what can be so good about technology, but never trust it for a minute. In this episode, Rob and Vinnie discuss 1 Cor 11:2-16. Does Paul teach that the man is the head of the women, or is this a misreading of 1 Corinthians? Are women supposed to have a head covering? Or is that something Paul's opponents in Corinth were arguing and Paul then responds to them? Rob and Vinnie take on Complementarianism v Egalitarianism. In this episode, Rob and Vinnie continue their overview of 1 Corinthians by looking at 1 cor 8-10. In this passage, Paul responds to some in Corinth that were claiming that since there is only one God and since other gods do not exist, it is acceptable for Christians to attend pagan banquets which we in honor of pagan gods. Paul responds by noting that the meat which was sold in the marketplace may be acceptable to buy and eat--unless it causes others to stumble--but attending pagan banquets in honor of a deity is not acceptable. Even if they have these rights, then should not use those rights because it will cause others to stumble. This raises the question of Christian love and what it looks like today. we willing to sacrifice our "rights" for the sake of others? Do we "run the race" so as to win the prize? In today's episode, Rob and Vinnie continue their overview of 1 Corinthians by finishing up the discussion on marriage and singleness in 1 Cor 7 and then looking into the issue of knowledge and love as it pertains to the issue of idolatry in 1 Cor 8-10. Though you might think that idolatry was an ancient issue, the reality is that idolatry is alive and well today. “More people than we realize are works in progress, are trying to figure out a way to think about the world… As Beyoncé said in her new album, they're contradicted. They're internally contradicted more than we think. We can make the kind of change we seek, we deserve in this country, if we allow the idea that more of us are contradicted, more of us need help sorting through the world, and we have the patience — we can muster that kind of patience and love to help people sort through how they see the world.” Bestselling author Anand Giridharadas (Winners Take All) joins us on the show to talk about his urgent new book, The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts, Minds, and Democracy, psychological transitions and cognitive dissonance, not giving up and bringing people into community, doing the work that works for you, how writing this book changed him and much more with Poured Over's host, Miwa Messer. Rob and Vinnie examine 1 Cor 1-4 and Paul's reminder that the Gospel may be "foolishness" to the world, but it is the "wisdom of God for salvation." Then they question how Christianity even survived, let alone continued for 2,000 years. Finally, Rob and Vinnie conclude with a discussion of Paul's gospel of a cross-bearing love for the sake of the other and the contemporary church. In this episode, Rob and Vinnie introduce us to the book of 1st Corinthians. There was probably no church that gave Paul as much grief as the church in Corinth. Why was that? In order to understand 1st Corinthians well, we need to understand what was going on in the Corinthian church and how the Greco-Roman world was influencing some of the leading men who were likely the primary source of the problems in Corinth Remember that our friends at Hearts & Minds, an independent bookstore in central Pennsylvania, have offered to give our listeners a 20% off on nearly anything ordered. Rob and Vinnie tackle the oft-debated Romans 9-11 and ask: what was Paul trying to say and how does this affect modern-day Israel and the Jewish people? Will there be an end-times revival among the Jewish people? This episode is a deep dive into the text and so it would be good if you have a Bible (or a phone with a Bible app) as you follow along in text.
