This week Kitty & Johnson are joined by the extremely intelligent and gorgeous Dr. Aditi Paul who is a mixed-methods researcher, professor and author based in New York City. She uses her multi-disciplinary background in computer science and communication studies to examine the impact of using human-centred technologies like social networking sites and online dating services.Aditi's research has been published in top academic journals and has been featured in prominent media outlets such as The Washington Post, Women's Health, The Telegraph UK, Huffington Post and NBCNews.“What's Hot and What's Not?” features saucy NY City weather and those tight, tight man shorts as well as videos of Kitty's butt fitting into her tight, tight shorts. We all share our love for post-orgasm cuddles and Aditi talks about her 5 minute whirlwind experience of Feeld.Johnson's What's Not Hot is… penis shaming and we are getting right up on board that train. Let's go ahead and say ALL body shaming of ALL genders is a big NOT HOT from us in the SWME podcast family. To kick-off the whole conversation about the hook-up culture Johnson tells an incredibly confusing and hilarious story about his awkward first experience of hooking up when he was 12.Aditi shares some fascinating data that she has collected through her research. Even the way we talk about “hooking up” (as in engaging in some type of sexual act) differentiates between genders, with female-identifying using much more generalised language and male-identifying using explicit descriptions in conversation. As part of Aditi's study she looked at the indicators of sexual assault and how individual's identified acts within their own personal experiences. She was surprised to find that 1 in 4 males stated that they had been touched inappropriately without consent by an intimate partner and even more surprised to find that the majority of the time this is not being identified as sexual assault.Johnson speaks about the transition that a lot of us go through from conquest mode to more consciousness around intimacy. In her research with Gen X individuals one of the major differences Aditi found was how much more openly and curiously this generation is exploring their sexual orientation. There are a huge percentage (more than ever before) who are identifying outside of being straight. Their awareness of sexuality and ability to access more information about it is a lot more vast and varied. The theme for just Quiz on My Face is… animal sex. Aditi jumps on in and guesses alongside Kitty. Our gorgeous friend Kelly Gordon from Hot Octopuss pops in to help to announce the winners from our competition!Dr. Aditi gives possibly the best answer ever when Kitty asks her what message she would love to leave behind… “Just fu*k shit up. As fast as you can. As badly as you can. As maniacally as you can. Just run yourself to the absolute motherfu*king ground and then build yourself up from there because that's how you know yourself.”Enjoy! In this week's episode we talk to the wonderful Dr Aditi Paul about her research on Gen Z hookup and dating culture. Her book The Current Collegiate Hookup Culture is out now, so please request that your local library or institution purchase it!We begin the episode by hearing about Aditi's interest in dating and hookup trends, which inspired her to begin her research on this topic. Aditi is a professor at Pace University, so we ask her if she and her colleagues have assumptions about how gen z date and have sex at uni, and if that was really accurate to what she discovered in her research. We hear how gen z use dating apps, and if they really all have sneaky links, if they're anti-relationship, and how often they're hooking up with people and with who. Aditi tells us whether sex lives of college students really have changed from previous generations, and what new terms there are to describe sex and hookup culture.Aditi also goes into safety and sex, such as how alcohol impacts the decisions students are making when it comes to sex, and if they practice protected sex. We love that Aditi's research focuses on people of colour, different genders and sexualities, and so we were of course interested to hear how sex changes amongst different groups, like whether the LGBT community use dating apps more or less than the straight community and how much sex people of colour are having in relation to stereotypes that negatively impact how they are perceived. We hope you guys enjoy the episode, thank you so much to Aditi for this informative and fun chat! Every generation gets wilder, right? Or maybe not. Aditi Paul (dating and relationships researcher and professor) studied Gen Z's hookup culture, and brings her interesting findings to Natasha Chandel. From their perception of dating apps to sexual fluidity, the pair discuss how being born with technology might have actually made Gen Z-ers more stable than Millennials. Aditi reveals the rise in sugar babies, and Gen Z's openness to online sex work. They discuss the evolution of hookup culture, how their personal sexual experiences differed from kids today, and what that means for this next generation of daters, in a fascinating, entertaining episode of Kinda Dating! We're joined by Dr. Aditi Paul, researcher and professor specializing in online relationships and modern relationships. (5:00) We talk about how the language we use influences how we think about relationships and vice-versa. (8:00) We get into the data behind the confusing term "hooking up" and what it means to different generations. (12:00) We discuss the data behind what Gen Z is actually looking for: meaningless sex, meaningful relationships or somewhere in between? (19:00) We talk about how we pretend to be in online dating profiles vs. how people actually live their lives - ie. everyone pretending to rabidly love hiking when most of us are hobbyless potatoes most of the time. (26:00) I ask her my burning question - how real is Euphoria based on the data?? More specifically, how real is the sex and drug-induced haze that TV portrays for today's youth? (31:00) Finally, we discuss the #1 dating fear of Gen Z and the lack of progress on the orgasm gap or the differing levels of pleasure that men, women and non-binary folks are getting from their hookups. It's been 20 years since I was in college and I was really curious how things compare. Good news - the kids are alright! We discussed their views on safer sex practices, dating apps, finding meaning in hookups, what their thoughts are about commitment, and what induces sexual regret. TW: sexual assault is briefly discussed in the second half of the show. You can find her at draditipaul.com and Twitter @iamaditipaul.
