Do you want to be a dog, or do you want to be a president?
D. W. Griffith may have invented the "blockbuster" with Birth of a Nation, but it was this film with which he invented the epic. Intolerance is 3+ hours of sprawling story covering love, injustice, excess, five time periods, and some of the biggest sets ever created for film. It cost him 2 million dollars to make in 1916 . . . a price tag he never recovered from. It's an epic failure, perhaps . . . but it's still an epic, and one of the most formative feature films in history.
Before cracking the AFI's Top 10, Christiana and Mike revisit and revise their rankings of the movies so far.
We're HALFWAY THROUGH the list!!! Crazy. It's flown by. This week, we do a deep dive into how we've rated the movies on this list thus far: how have the top 50 films fared? How do Josh and Ira differ from each other? What are our biases based on decades of movie-making? And what are the LIST'S biases? It's all a fascinating peak behind this list and our reactions to it thus far. Enjoy!
There's a lot to be said for making people laugh! Joel McCrea takes a wacky turn as a famously successful comedy director who wants to suffer so he can make a serious movie. His solution: hit the road and pretend to be poor. Along the way, he falls in love with aspiring actress Veronica Lake. Sounds like a dynamite premise, yes? Let's find out if it delivers. This week on Film School!
The Wolfman is EVERYWHERE. George Lucas makes his first appearance on the list with this 50s nostalgia cruising culture classic, starring Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss, and a soundtrack that doesn't quit. It's a teenage "last night in town" story, but how does it hold up? We watch and debate it this week! Enjoy :)
I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this any more! Paddy Chayefsky's script is the real star of this bonkers film. It starts out very conventionally: an aging, depressed news anchor and his equally aged and depressed producer are being pushed out from their network. But when the anchor announces he's going to kill himself on air, things get crazy...and then crazier and crazier. This film is a SCATHING indictment of the news-as-entertainment culture we live in to this day, and what it has to say has never been more relevant. Let's get mad, y'all, this week on Film School!
Ira digs into the numbers behind the ratings we've given the first quarter of AFI's Top 100 films and what they might mean about us, both the boys give updates on what they've been working on for the past month or so, and they consider the question of whether or not they're putting too much content behind the pay wall of Patreon for these early days of building the podcast. It's a packed full episode this week! Enjoy!
Josh asks Ira if watching the AFI's Top 100 movies has improved his storytelling yet, and Ira asks him the same question right back. In a nutshell: yes. For both of them. But how?
Robert Redford and Paul Newman star in the film that arguably made them icons as the shoot-from-the-hip, tight-lipped Sundance and the worrying, scheming, talkative Butch. The chemistry is undeniable. The script sizzles. The vistas are breathtaking. The capers are a hoot. And our two leads embody a bygone era where men were free to be free. And criminals. Definitely criminals. So, let's take the plunge and talk Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid.
Paul & Amy go to war over 1939's blockbuster Southern epic Gone With The Wind! They praise the chemistry of Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh, watch a trailer for the misbegotten sequel, and ask whether a film this messy deserves to be in the AFI's Top 10. Plus: Kevin J. Goff, the great grand-nephew of Hattie McDaniel, talks to Amy about her legacy. Greetings fans! Unquote is back this week with #6 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes. Prepare to squint like Clint this week as Dirty Harry takes the quote stage. This week is brief but potent! Also, Unquote will be coming to an end unfortunately. I have had a great time making these episodes and am so thankful for the Rogue Intel Network for hosting my show! Only 4 more episodes until the series finale so stay tuned. This week I talk about: Why you never want to accidentally break and enter somewhere in Colorado, Clint Eastwood's background in politics, and...Reaganomics?
Number 99 on AFI's Top 100, Toy Story! You know it, you love it, but I forgot exactly how dark it was... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/spoilerscast/message

We're on a roll (or rye bread) this week! My guest Erin and I talk about #33 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes from the romcom "When Harry Met Sally". The 1989 film saw Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan become friends, enemies, and finally lovebirds. The line this week is the only line spoken by a cameo actor; how neat! In this episode Erin and I discuss: Why baby fish mouth should be in Webster's dictionary Reuben and, alternatively, non-Reuben sandwhiches Why I should I always bring a wrench and a spare t-shirt on dates The forthcoming remake of When Harry Met Sally directed by Erin
#48 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes list is Billy Wilder's gender-bending romantic comedy "Some Like It Hot". Its a tale of love, loss, and learning to duck when someone throws cole slaw at you! My mom was a mother on this past Mother's Day so I sat down to talk with her about the movie. In the episode we discuss: Why they should encourage Lemon's cross-dressing acting method How violence and comedy can balance each other out Why my name is *not* Osgood Beanstalk Powers And finally, the travails of imperfect people living in an imperfect world.
#83 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes list is "Dracula". If you've got any ideas about silly Muppet characters in monocles, rethink your notion of horror! I chat with Brandon this episode about how ladies are wooed by untrimmed fingernails and heavy Romanian accents, accepting one's role as the villain, and I get lawyered by Brandon's insight and wit! You can definitely listen to this one with the light's off and the shades drawn to keep that pesky sunlight out of your way.
#73 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes list is "Little Caesar"....no, not the "pizza-pizza" cartoon character on television! I take my ugly mug and fly solo this week for a short and sweet episode. I hope youse guise enjoy the episode and don't turn out yellow-bellied!
#50 on AFI's Top 100 Movie Quotes list is Apollo 13, directed by Ron Howard. My guest Patrick gives me an out-of-this-world interview filled with great view points and tales from the sky. We discuss the hazards of operating on a shoestring budget, confuse Ed Harris with Ed Helms (the 'Nard Dog in Mission Control), more rants about Bill Paxton, and lastly about how similar Fred Haise and I are (we share the same hometown and both throw up occasionally)!
On ths special episode, the Shark Dropper crew performs their first ever Skype session with friend Mallory (www.healsandheadshots.com). There are some technical difficulties throughout, but we are still able to have a fun time. We talk about the Oscars, AFI's Top 100 films, the Slenderman murders, our first s, and gross Celeb feet. We also dedicate a good ten minutes to bashing Adam Sandler films. It's a good time.
The AFI's Top 100 takes a back seat as we talk about zeitgeisty flicks you can find at the box office right now! We won't reveal anything important until the end of the 'cast when we tell you spoilers are coming. This 5th Now Playing Project takes on the Coen Brothers music dramedy Inside Llewyn Davis (with Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan) and Spike Jonze's newest offbeat creation, Her (with Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams). Start 'er up for our extensive thoughts on both!
This week on the show we talked about the possible imprisonment of Lindsay Lohan, AFI's Top 10 Movies and TV Shows of 2012, and a lot more. So, listen and enjoy! If you like us please rate us on iTunes and we appreciate the support!
