Her (stylized in lowercase) is a 2013 American science-fiction romantic drama film written, directed, and co-produced by Spike Jonze. It marks Jonze's solo screenwriting debut. The film follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an artificially intelligent virtual assistant personified through a female voice. The film also stars Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and Chris Pratt.
For the 4th and final time, we're re-reviewing a movie we discussed 10 years ago. Some films age badly, while some become more relevant. Her is extremely relevant! We didn't have any idea just how addicted to devices our culture would get when this movie came out in late-2013. We're a society of people who are lost in their phones, so the science fiction in Spike Jonze's Oscar-winning story might soon become science fact. In the futuristic Her, Joaquin Phoenix is a lonely writer living in Los Angeles who falls in love with a computer program. Scarlett Johansson provides the friendly voice of "Samantha", and, as tremendous as Phoenix is, this voice-only performance is one of the best things Scar-Jo has ever done. We talked about the morality of our relationship to A.I. and what's real and what's not about a program like Samantha. We also got into whether or not this heartfelt film is the usually-funny Jonze being almost autobiographical in a touching way. In any case, the 550th edition of Have You Ever Seen really likes the man's movie, so fire up our chat and see if you agree. Well, Actually: just to be clear, when Ryan says "he's better off", the intention is to suggest that even though Theodore is heartbroken that Samantha left, he's better off having known her at all. It's not to imply he's better off WITHOUT her. We are sponsored by Sparkplug Coffee. They give Have You Ever Seen listeners a onetime 20% discount. 03:18 ~ 03:48 《SWALLOW》 14:38 ~ 15:08 《LOUD》 36:01 ~ 36:31 《MAN MADE MONSTER》37:02 ~ 39:59 《LITTLE FIRES》Spotify 播放清單這裡聽:https://bit.ly/bunnymode 本節目由鬼島之音 Ghost Island Media 製作、出品 主持 - ZUKKIM 張竹芩 & ZOE 李菁琪 企劃、執行 - 葉阿亭剪接、混音 - 林迪諾監製 - Emily Y. We're stopping everything to talk to two trail blazers in the Australian music industry, Jen Cloher and Jaguar Jonze. Jen Cloher's new album, I Am The River, The River Is Me is a powerful collection of songs inspired by Jen's matrilineal line of wāhine Māori. Jen told BW and BL in 2022 that the lead single, Mana Takatāpui is a loving tribute to queer Maori identity. Jaguar Jonze is creating major change after a series of post it notes shared on social media sparked a nationwide review into bullying and sexual assault in the Australian music industry. BW spoke to Jaguar in February 2022 about songwriting, advocacy and performing during the pandemic.

“Asa Nisi Masa:” 8 ½ at Sixty It is an intriguing coincidence that perhaps the two greatest films ever made about the creative breakthroughs and heartbreaks involved in making a film are both celebrating major anniversaries in 2023. First, Federico Fellini's raucous, post-modern celebration of his own creative process, "8 ½" turns sixty. It's important to note, though, that while we see no filmmaking in that film, the actual portrayal of the logistical and emotional vicissitudes of film creation are very much at the heart of François Truffaut's much-beloved "Day for Night", which itself turns fifty this year. We will focus most of our time in this episode on Fellini's film, taking our intrepid listeners on a tour that begins with an opening that stands as the most brilliant metaphor for creative blockage ever put on film, all the way through the end with the circus band playing Nino Rota's indelible march as every character we've seen from the director's past and present joins hands and dances in perhaps the most life-affirming moment in all of film. We then use Fellini's work as a springboard to discuss the other films about filmmaking that we love, starting with "Day for Night", and bringing in works ranging in tone from Assayas' "Irma Vep" to Jonze's "Adaptation" to Burton's loving tribute to Ed Wood. Finally, we'll take a quick peek at this year's two great portraits of the filmmaker as a young man, Gray's "Armageddon Time" and Spielberg's "The Fabelmans" (though honestly, I'd take J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" over either of them). But it's important to keep in mind that all of these wonderful films probably never even come close to happening without Fellini blazing the trail. To paraphrase the master himself, he may have had nothing to say, but fortunately for all of us, he found the most brilliant way to say it all the same. Grazie mille, maestro!
The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, and Craig Hammill) enters the mind of skater-auteur Spike Jonze and his directorial debut, the darkly comic Being John Malkovich, written by Charlie Kaufman. BJM is one of Connor's favorite films and he gushes about its existential horror and daring style! Edwin prefers Jonze's follow-up Kaufman-collab, Adaptation. Craig admires his shorter work, including an Apple ad he made with FKA Twigs and his incredible music and skateboard videos. Daniel talks about how inspiring Jonze's wild approach was to him as a young filmmaker!
Unsurprisingly, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been a huge hit, and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw was excited to join the crew. She had worked with Marvel on the Disney+ series Loki and felt her creative vision on the show was really supported there. Autumn felt ready to step into a huge movie like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever after she spoke with original Black Panther DP Rachel Morrison and meeting with director Ryan Coogler. Rachel and Autumn were friends from AFI, and Rachel was not available to shoot the sequel as she has been transitioning into directing. Director Ryan Coogler had Autumn join the Black Panther team early for storyboarding and previs for the movie. She and Coogler had lots of time to discuss the images and were on the same page visually. Even though the movie has a huge scope and a massive amount of people making the film, Autumn felt like her ideas were supported and her images were well represented on screen. Early in her career, Autumn worked on many projects for free both during and after film school, so that anyone could find her and see who she was through her visual approach. She approaches each film with passion, putting all of her creative energy into her work. Autumn's breakout early work was on director Gia Coppola's indie film, Palo Alto. The two bonded and worked together on more projects, and Autumn met director Spike Jonze through her. She worked with Jonze on Aziz Ansari: Right Now, a Netflix standup special, and Beastie Boys Story, a 2020 documentary about the band. Autumn enjoys framing her shots with symmetry and low angles, with a lower eyeline, pointing towards the ceiling rather than the floor. For the series Loki on Disney+, she shot a lot of scenes from below, but the production designer Kasra Farahani embraced it, creating visually interesting ceilings that could be rigged with controlled lighting. They worked together to create a space in the Time Variance Authority (TVA) that felt full, with motivated light. Building practical ceilings was a big part of their design discussions during production meetings. Normally on a set, the ceiling is not built and isn't ever seen, so adding it to the set design always adds to the cost. Autumn knew that shooting low in those spaces would create the desired effect of something looming over you. Being John Malkovich may well be the 1999est movie we have yet covered on the show. And the only reason it didn't make it into the first nine (and just barely) is that 1) it really took some time to fully sink in to the culture, sort of like Fight Club, and 2) unlike Fight Club, it has largely been marginalized in recent years, due in no small part to the successive work of both Jonze and Kaufman, who produced films that would go on to greater critical and commercial success than this one did. But it explores many of the same issues that films like The Matrix and Fight Club explore, though with a much more insane glee than those films. And it comes across as the kind of movie that could only hit theaters during the year of Y2K end-times paranoia, when the whole culture sort of shared and “I dunno, fuck it!” kind of attitude. It also happens to be previous guest Brian Silliman's favorite 1999 movie, so John and Joey asked him back to take a little trip through the tunnel on floor seven-and-a-half to get inside the mind Malkovich and talk about this brilliant, groundbreaking classic. Multi-talented Australian artist Jaguar Jonze shares her empowering, debut album "Bunny Mode." She discusses the process of writing the album and the inspiration behind each song.
Despite being the very public face of the Australian music industry's #MeToo movement, singer Jaguar Jonze still feels gagged by the country's onerous defamation laws. The Taiwanese-Australian indie-pop darling was among the first to speak out against the poor treatment of women in the local music industry when she posted allegations on Twitter about being sexually assaulted by two producers in 2019. Jonze speaks to host of sister podcast Please Explain, Nathanael Cooper about the cost of speaking out about poor behaviour in the music industry, in this episode of Good Weekend Talks. In 2021, Brisbane-based musician and activist, Jaguar Jonze, became one of the first local artists to call out toxic culture within the Australian music industry. It was a move that could have left her music career in tatters, but instead, she was among the brave voices that led to pivotal change within the industry and the company's at the helm. In this episode, Phoebe and Jaguar explore the price of activism, the healing capability of creativity, and the wedding photo that should never have surfaced. The debut album by Jaguar Jonze – AKA Brisbane artist Deena Lynch – is called Bunny Mode. The record's title may sound upbeat and playful, but the story behind it is heartbreaking, as it describes the behaviour Deena used as a coping mechanism when she was abused as a child. She is a survivor in the very real sense of the word, having not only made it through her childhood, but as an adult she was sexually assaulted by two music producers. She responded by bravely speaking out, and in doing so became one of the leading voices of Australia's #MeToo movement. Deena's advocacy work has played a big part in Jaguar Jonze's public profile, but so too has her boundless creativity. Jaguar Jonze is just one of Deena's creative outlets, with Spectator Jonze focusing on visual art, and Dusky Jonze on photography. We talk about Bunny Mode as well as Deena's life, her art and her advocacy work in this interview.
Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film. In this episode, we're uploading the Spike Jonze 2013 movie HER and exploring the relationship between Theodore and his operating system Samantha. Among other prestigious accolades, this movie won Jonze the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, with Scarlett Johansson taking over the role of the OS system from Samantha Morton once filming had completed. In an industry built to protect those in power, and keep voices silent, how do you ensure your advocacy for what is right, doesn't come at the cost of your own identity? Deena Lynch (Jaguar Jonze) is one of Australian music's most powerful voices. In 2019, Jonze was one of the first survivors to speak out about their experience of sexual abuse within the Australian music industry. Her bravery, strength and power encouraged others to do the same, and was the catalyst for a movement that swept through Australian music. Jaguar joins host Luke Darcy from a rainy Brisbane to chat the impact her advocacy had on the industry, how she's handling the pressure of being a leader, and what's next on her creative bucket list. Jaguar Jonze is a hard-to-genre musician from Brisbane (Cam described it as moody, dark, Western, pop - and she digged it!) She joined Homebrewed to discuss her latest single as part of her campaign to become Australia's entrant into Eurovision 2022, as well as becoming a vocal advocate for sexual harassments victims at the hand of powerful figures within the Australian music scene. She really is just a genuinely lovely human who we loved chatting to. Hope you enjoy the episode. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. Social Media | Interview with Jaguar Jonze - Finding Artistry & Independence via Social Media When I came back to Perth for the Summer, I did not in my wildest dreams expect to meet Taiwanese-Australian artist extraordinaire Jaguar Jonze here. But yet here she was, seated in front of me in all her signature leopard print glory. I had met Jaguar aka Deena Lynch the day before at a music mentorship program for West Australian musicians, and given that the previous episode of our Level Up podcast was very much inspired by her amazing social media strategy, the serendipity was too strong to ignore with this one. A self-managed artist who has gone from strength to strength with her uniquely sensual and vulnerable alt-rock sound and striking east-meets-west visuals, Deena is one of few artists who has truly pivoted the pandemic to her advantage in 2020. As she so succinctly puts it, she made COVID her bitch. Becoming Triple J's most-listened artist in 2020, scoring brand deals with the likes of Christian Louboutin and Adobe, and fighting for accountability and change against sexual predators in the Australian music industry, it's mind-boggling to know that Lynch achieved all this after spending 40 days in the hospital battling COVID-19. Yet she is very transparent about social media and digital media's role in her success on the whole, sharing that the brand partnerships she garnered last year were definitely down to the social media presence she's created during this time. We sat down with Deena to pick her brain on her mindset surrounding social media, her relationship with it throughout her career, and the logic behind some of her stellar online content. Also...we are so excited to announce our first ever sponsor for the Level Up podcast - Yunizon Eyewear! Social Media | Artist Case Studies - Jaguar Jonze, Karencici, Joy Crookes We can talk all we want about social media, but what better way to put it in context than with some case studies deep diving into some artists we love? With Instagram as our medium of choice, we've chosen three artists who we believe embody all the foundations for a healthy and creative social media persona as per talked about in our last episode: Taiwanese-Australian singer-songwriter Jaguar Jonze, Asian-American singer-songwriter Karencici, and British artist Joy Crookes (of Irish/Indian heritage). We believe that the most important thing is to use social media to empower yourself, and what you hope to express to your listeners. These artists have taken the basic social media format Instagram has provided them with, and merged it with their own creative direction and workstyles to create content that is uniquely and consistently them, creating interesting ways of creating content through the platform in the process. If you're a visual person, don't forget to check out the YouTube verson of this podcast ep we put up with screengrab walkthroughs of the various Instagram posts for full effect! Here are the main takeaways we got from each of the artists' profiles: Jaguar Jonze Great use of colour profiling and textures: Jaguar Jonze loves her bold reds, yellows and orange hues. These are displayed prominently across her feed. She also loves leopard prints (hence the stage name) and even when she's posting day-to-day content, she's often seen sporting leopard prints too! Awesome reusing of content: Content is precious, and Instagram (as well as most social media) is a primarily visual platform which requires quick and consistent releasing of content to stay relevant. Jaguar is adept at making sure she has lots of visual documentation of all her exploits, from photoshoots to live photos, and uses them frequently to share new information with fans or to engage with them. This is a great mindset to have. Using her own ways to create intimate spaces visually on IG: Jaguar is passionate about voicing her support for women. Last year, she campaigned against sexual harassment and assault by posting resources and events she had personally encountered or heard of on her social media on colourful, bold sticky notes written in her own hand. Karencici Social Media Native: One look at Karencici's page will show you that she is a millennial social media native through and through. There is just something so organic and natural about the way that she shares content, while building on her brand as an artist and musician. Original use of filters to easily create new content: In instances where Karencici has done challenges or shared demos on her page, she often uses filters to spice up her off-the-cuff videos so that it tells a bigger story both musically and visually than just another video of someone singing into their microphone. Authentic, consistent, unique engagement methods with fans: As mentioned above, Karencici is the queen of coming up with new and fun ways to engage with her fans using her own voice. From the abovementioned Christmas song challenge to a recent challenge where she recorded a video of her writing a song in under an hour and then releasing the demo on her Instagram, Karen is generous with her talents and songwriting ability, and this allows audiences to be able to take a peep into her world and her prowess as a singer-songwriter without even having to release a single. Joy Crookes Authentic social media persona: Given her name, it's no surprise that Joy's sweet, passionate and authentic persona shines Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Watching the film Her will definitely bring about emotion with its audiences. It was just a perfect mix of great writing, great directing, and a great screenplay that gives us a deep and thought-provoking film. So join us this week as we discussed and talked about Her, the Her movie cast, the missing Her movie soundtrack, and giving our final Her film review! What is the film Her about? Spike Jonze (Source) Spike Jonze's film Her is about a recently divorced man named Theodore Twambly, installs a new personal assistant operating system. Eventually, he falls in love her (she names herself Samantha). They help each other grow as Theodore helps Samantha evolve beyond her programming and Samantha helps him navigate through his post-divorce emotions and loneliness. We think that one of the main messages this movie is trying to get across is that you are allowed to be more than what you are, especially if you are limiting yourself. Her Movie Cast Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore Twambly We think Joaquin did a fantastic job in this film, despite how odd he can be sometimes. The one thing we do know is that he really does commit to the roles he plays. Like many of the other cast members, he did a great job conveying the emotion and feeling of his character and the film to audiences. Scarlett Johansson as the voice of Samantha Johansson was actually not the initial voice of Samantha. It was Samantha Morton who originally voiced this role. However, later on, Spike Jonze decided in post-production that Morton didn't provide what was needed for this film and with her blessing, Johansson was casted as the artificial intelligence character. (Photo by Gage Skidmore) Amy Adams as Amy While Adams has a smaller and supporting role in this movie, she did great just like Joaquin did by conveying the emotion her character was feeling to the audience. There was actually a bit of a side-story cut from this film about Adams' character's documentary that she is making, which obviously would've resulted in more screen time for Amy Adams, but Jonze had the original two and a half hour runtime cut down to 2 hours with the help of Steven Soderbergh. and... Chris Pratt as Paul Rooney Mara as Catherine Klausen Olivia Wilde as Blind Date Her Movie Soundtrack Arcade Fire and Owen Pallet composed the music and score for the film Her. For some odd reason though, there was never an official soundtrack released for this movie! Why not? Who decides these things? This music for this film was actually very good in our opinion and we think the soundtrack would have sold well! There have been rumblings of it being released, but no good solid leads at this point. The Her score was ultimately nominated for an Academy Award at the 86th Academy Awards show, but lost to Steven Price's score for the film Gravity. Scarlett Johansson Song in Her: "The Moon Song" "The Moon Song" was composed by Karen Orzolek and the lyrics were written by her and director Spike Jonze! During the film, Scarlett Johansson sings the song which fit perfectly within its setting. During the end credits, Orzolek can be heard singing it, though. It was nominated at the 86th Academy Awards show for Best Original Song. Unfortunately, this nomination lost as well. This time to the well-known and at the time over-play song from Frozen, "Let It Go" (rolling eyes, haha!). In any case, "The Moon Song" is a very soft and gentle song, but captures the theme of love very well. Take a listen below! Force Fed Sci-Fi's Lens Flares Sean's Lens Flare this week is the fact that nobody wears belts in the future in this film apparently. Chris argues that maybe that's just the style for that time, but Sean says that if you have them, why aren't you using them! So Chris says it's a fashion statement, but Sean's reasoning is sound as if we stop using them in the future, why would we include them on our pants anyways?
Cadwell and Elliot have been after Larry for quite some time to watch the Spike Jonze film Her. Larry was reluctant to watch what he assumed was a shallow love story about a man and his phone. But having been bombarded with AI stories recently, Larry felt it was the right time to engage. With Cadwell in town (but unfortunately without Elliot) the two watched the movie together and had a very deep conversation, not only about the film, but about the nature of romance and relationships. It was so interesting that Anju and Jess had to join in the festivities! Drum Groove of the Week dips into the Genesis well once more.
