Episode #291: Valerie Long (Richard Long, Mara Corday)   Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to Valerie Long, daughter of actors Richard Long and Mara Corday. It took some time for Valerie to come around to the idea of being on the podcast and frankly, we get it. As you will hear, her recollections about her father's passing at an early age and her difficulties with that loss play a part in this conversation.   For many of us, Richard Long is best known from either television shows The Big Valley or Nanny and the Professor. We discuss those shows as well as The Twilight Zone, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick as well as his films – he made his debut on the silver screen with Orson Wells and Claudette Colbert, in Tomorrow is Forever. I mean….. We also discuss her actress, dancer, model mother Mara Corday who passed away after this episode was recorded. In fact, we got a call from the New York Times regarding her career when they wrote her obituary as they wanted to confirm a few things we discussed on the podcast with Valerie. It's almost unfathomable to know that the New York Times would site our podcast when talking about the life and career of Mara Corday. Thanks to Valerie for being so open and honest about everything and for being on the podcast to tell her story. Along the way, we discuss family friends like Clint Eastwood, Roddy McDowell, Dan Rowan, Peter Marshall and many others. Additionally we discuss a story we frankly never knew about prior to this episode. Prior to her parents' marriage, Richard was married to an up-and-coming actress named Suzan Ball who died shortly after their wedding at age 22, when Richard was only 23. It's a tragic story that we uncover talking to Valerie who gives us the details about how this likely affected her father. The Rarified Heir Podcast, everyone has a story.

EPISODE 137 -  “THE BIG SCREEN ‘I DO': WEDDINGS IN CLASSIC CINEMA” - 4/27/2026  Weddings in classic films aren't just about romance—they're about timing, tension, and sometimes total chaos. Join us as we step into a world of whirlwind courtships, last-minute doubts, and grand gestures that don't always go according to plan. From glamorous, music-filled celebrations to sharp, fast-talking battles of love versus ambition, these stories remind us that the walk down the aisle is rarely simple—and often unforgettable. Along the way, we'll meet couples who fall in love against the odds, relationships that thrive on wit and conflict, and ceremonies that might just spiral into something completely unexpected. Because in classic cinema, a wedding isn't just an ending—it can be a twist, a turning point, or even a full-on rebellion. So grab your bouquet—real or imaginary—and join us as we explore some of the most iconic, surprising, and delightfully complicated trips to the altar ever put on film. It's Awards Season yet again. Here on the Holmes Movies Podcast that means, it is time for the Alternative Oscars episodes! AKA the Anders and Adam-emy Awards! Each episode for this series we pick a different year in Oscars history and attempt to correct the record, stripping the undeserving of their garlands while recognising those who were cruelly overlooked. This time, we will be casting our eye back to… the 28th Academy Awards. The event celebrated all the films released in the year of 1955. The event was held at the RKO Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles, California and the NBC Century Theatre in New York City. The Lost Angeles host was Jerry Lewis. The New York hosts were Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Claudette Colbert. This year at the 28th Annual Academy Awards, Delbert Mann's film Marty won Best Picture and Best Director. Plus Best Actor in a Leading Role for its start Ernest Borgnine. Grace Kelly was at the ceremony as a presenter and this was just when she was about to retire from acting. She would then become the Princess of Monaco. This was also the last year where International Films received a Special/Honorary Oscar. The Best Foreign Language Film award would be handed out for the first time next year at the 29th Annual Academy Awards. Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. I'd like to know what's buzzin', cousins, as I bring you the 716th podcast on Have You Ever Seen. Preston Sturges was making a lot of hay in the early '40s, releasing The Lady Eve AND Sullivan's Travels the year before The Palm Beach Story came out. Palm Beach isn't as classic or as funny as THOSE two are, but it's an effectively zany, fast-talkin' rom-com. Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea make for a compelling married NYC couple. She tries to divorce him (you'll never guess where), so she can marry a rich man like Rudy Vallee...and then help her ex out by getting him some money out of the deal. If you think THAT'S whacky, wait until the out-of-deep-left-field ending! But The Palm Beach Story IS a fun time and I've got all kinds of stories to tell about it. Subscribe to this channel and you'll never miss an episode. I'm doing more shows lately...and posting on various days of the week. Rate and review the podcast in your app too. Letterboxd: RyanHYES. “HABITS, COLLARS & CLOSEUPS IN CLASSIC CINEMA” - 1/12/2026 (122) Classic cinema has always had a fascination with clergy and nuns — not just as religious figures, but as real people caught between faith and the challenges of the world. When these characters take center stage, the stories often become less about doctrine and more about conscience, compassion, and moral choices.  Sometimes with a good dose of humor thrown in. In today's episode, we're going to dive into classic films that put nuns and clergy at the heart of the story. The characters portrayed are thoughtful, conflicted, sometimes heroic, and always deeply human, with stories that explore grace, hope, and the consequences of our choices.  This week, we take a look back at some unforgettable films where the collar or the veil isn't just a costume—it's the core of the story. She candidly shares how it took a long time for them to develop a genuine friendship, though Tom was ultimately "a really nice man, a very good man." Marion explains the memoir's title reflects both her happy television success and the difficult "otherwise" period between ages 40-50 when she went through a challenging divorce.Marion discusses how her son, actor Jim Meskimen (known for the Geico George Washington commercial), literally had to convince her to write the book by bringing writer David Laurel to her house. She describes her preferred method of storytelling - being recorded in conversation rather than typing - and how the collaborative process made the memoir possible. Marion shares incredible stories from her diverse career, including performing Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" live on CBS with Claudette Colbert, Lauren Bacall, and Coward himself, working with Cary Grant, playing a Jewish Polish grandmother on "Brooklyn Bridge," voicing characters on SpongeBob SquarePants, and appearing as Drew Carey's mother. Now retired and living at "Happy Days Farm," Marion continues connecting with fans through book signings across the country, from San Francisco to Missouri to New York, where hundreds of devoted fans line up to meet the woman who made Mrs. C a household name.

In this episode, Stuart and Jacob dive into the enchanting(?) world of romantic comedies as they compare the beloved 1934 classic "It Happened One Night", directed by Frank Capra, with its 1956 musical remake "You Can't Run Away from It", directed by comedian and actor Dick Powell?! The two explore the charming chemistry between leads Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and how their performances set a high bar for cinematic romance. Contrast this with Jack Lemmon and June Allyson's iteration of the story, and see how the musical elements and sound effects can form a... grating... experience. What makes the original resonate with audiences even today? Is the addition of musical numbers a blessing or a curse for this kind of movie? And just what in the hell is "Eve Knew Her Apples"? Also featured in this episode are opinions on the newest "Wicked" movie, a takedown off public transportation villains, praise for Claudette Colbert, and a long diatribe about the current state of the film industry (what else is new for this show?). All this and more on They Remade It!Plot Synopsis Timestamps: 15:26 - 20:20----------Socials----------@theyremadeit.bsky.social on Blueskytheyremadeit@gmail.com

On episode 290 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello, AwardsWatch contributor Mark Johnson, and special guest Kevin Jacobsen, Entertainment Weekly Content Update Editor and host of the And the Runner Up Is podcast, for part two of their Best Actress Tier Rankings. In the second part of the Best Actress tier rankings (listen to Part 1 here), the team return to the scene of the crime from last week to rank the remaining 49 Oscar winning performances, and discuss where they place them in their all-ranking. In trying to place these winners in the correct spot, the team had to come together and decide on whether to place these performances in the S (all-time winner), A, B, C, D, or F tier and explain the ranking. For the first time in the tier ranking episodes, the performances have been randomized, making the show even more unpredictable as to who will be covered from the list of winners on this episode. Also, the team has instituted two rules that include only 15 winners being able to be in the “S tier” and if an actress has multiple wins, only one of their wins can make it into the 15. Some of the winners ranked on this week's episode are Claudette Colbert for It Happened One Night, Nicole Kidman for The Hours, Meryl Streep for Sophie's Choice, Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich, Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs, Diane Keaton for Annie Hall, Faye Dunaway for Network, Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once, our most recent winner Mikey Madison, Anora, and many more. By the end of the episode, some of the wildest takes of the episode start coming out, so you will want to listen all the way to the end to hear them; it's lot of fun. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 4h18m. Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Valarie Long, daughter of actors Richard Long and Mara Corday. At times our conversation was breezy, at times difficult and at other times funny, Valerie really took some time with this interview because there was so much to discuss.    From health issues that plagued Richard his whole life to some of those same issues that Valerie herself faced, we hear about how her father was plucked from obscurity as a high school senior at Hollywood High School and within no time was working on films with Orson Welles, Claudette Colbert, Loretta Young and Edward G. Robinson. We also discuss her father's first marriage prior to meeting the pinup girl Playboy model turned actress Mara Corday, to a young ingénue named Suzan Ball who tragically passed away at age 22 when Richard was only 23 whose tragic story is one we had never heard of prior to connecting to Valerie. Somehow we end up talking to Valerie about people like Clint Eastwood, Peter Marshall, Lee Majors, Barbara Stanwyck, Roddy McDowell, Dan Rowan and Sit John Mills. We also discuss iconic TV shows like The Big Valley, The Twilight Zone, 77 Sunset Strip, Nanny and the Professor and more. We discuss movies like Tarantula, Sudden Impact, Tomorrow is Forever, Ma and Pa Kettle and Make Like a Thiefand others. It's a rollicking conversation that was equal parts funny, heartwarming and poignant and we thank Valerie for shying away from nothing in our conversation.. But that's how things happen on the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story. And this one is a keeper.

In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. EPISODE 32 - “The Mary Astor Purple Diary Scandal” - 04/22/2024 One of the most scandalous trials in early Hollywood history involved actress MARY ASTOR, who had made a name for herself playing virginal ingenues and good girls. Mary, who had kept a diary for most of her life, found her words used as a sensationalized weapon against her in her quest to regain custody of her 4-year-old child in 1936 after her acrimonious divorce from her doctor husband. The trial made worldwide headlines. Her sexy, salacious diary entries showed the world a more sensual side to our virginal Mary, and, in many ways, helped propel her career into the stratosphere. Listen as we discuss Mary Astor, her life, her career, and her shocking purple diaries that took center stage in a Los Angeles courtroom.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Mary Astor: My Story (1960), by Mary Astor; Mary Astor: A Life on Film (1972), by Mary Astor;  The Purple Diaries: Mary Astor and the Most Sensational Hollywood Scandal of the 1930s (2016), by Joseph Egan; Mary Astor's Purple Diary: The Great American Sex Scandal of 1936 (2106), by Edward Sorel; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Beau Brummell (1924), starring John Barrymore and Mary Astor; Dodsworth (1936), starring Walter Huston, Ruth Chatterton, Paul Lukas, and Mary Astor; Red Dust (1932), starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor: The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), starring Ronald Colman, Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Madeleine Carroll, Mary Astor, David Niven, Raymond Massey, and C. EPISODE 27 - “Dona Drake: What Price Fame” - 03/18/2024 Latina star DONA DRAKE, who signed a contract with Paramount Pictures in 1941, was many things — singer, dancer, actress, bandleader, musician — but one thing she wasn't, as it turned out, was Latin! While Paramount promoted their new discovery as a spitfire Latina born in Mexico City, Drake was, in fact, an African-American woman from Florida who pretended to be Latin, going so far as to learn Spanish fluently, in order to have a better chance at a Hollywood career.
