This month, we have an outstanding showcase of the 'Raw Trance' sound, featuring music from some of my current favourite producers like Mikkel Rev, Asca, Omformer, Oprofessionell, Whirloop, Sioc, Alan Backdrop, Lucinee, and more. I'm delighted to see the rise of this raw, deep, and hypnotic sound, which truly represents the essence of underground trance right now.

Having grown up in a house where collecting music was the norm, Swedish-born DJ Philippa Pacho has carried this through to her adult life. As a result, the Berlin-based artist is a well-tuned and confident selector who knows how to capture an audience in any given situation. It all began with her father's hobby of collecting jazz, blues and folk records. As a teenager, Philippa built her own music library before attending her first rave, and later discovering the underworld of dance music and club culture. As standard in a community of electronic music heads, Philippa made friends from the scene in Stockholm and in 2010, formed a collective with a handful of girlfriends. Together, the women curated their night every Thursday at 2:35:1; an art gallery and club located in the city centre. It was here that Philippa delved into DJing headfirst, taking advantage of the creative freedom on offer and learning the skills of mixing and working the dancefloor until dawn. With two years of DJing under her belt, by this time she earned a residency at the Stockholm-based club Under Bron — where she remains the longest-running resident since the space opened in 2010 — Philippa's early sound leant towards hypnotic techno, but she has since graduated to a include myriad of bouncy and tripped-out rhythms within the genre. Playing at forest raves on the outskirts of Stockholm and upending abandoned warehouses in the city — balanced between Under Bron bookings — these raw experiences infiltrated Philippa's sound down to the last cadence, resulting in her groove-heavy collection and quick-fire blending. Making the move to Berlin in 2014 allowed Philippa to flourish and finesse her sound. Known today for merging contemporary and old-school techno while dipping into different tempos and sub-genres, Philippa has played for Ellen Allien's We Are Not Alone series, Synoid parties and DJ Tool, D.Dan and Hyperaktivist's event, Mala Junta. Such a diverse range of bookings has allowed her to reveal other dimensions to her sound, and joining MESS line-ups — a collective that celebrates diversity and supporting DIY club culture worldwide — has recently contributed to the growth of Philippa's profile. A recent chapter for Philippa sees her founding the label ‘positivesource' together with Blue Hour. The pair release various artist EPs from artists including Oprofessionell, Newa, Sugar, Alan Backdrop, Rove Ranger, Lady Starlight, LDS, Blue Hour himself and many more. With the return of nightlife, Philippa's focus remains crisp and clear; her goal is to get you to move your whole body in expressive ways. She sees herself as a dancer first and foremost and has that always in mind when she performs. "A good DJ set is like a candy bag. You need a bit of the sweet, sour and some unexpected flavours to tickle your taste buds." On Board Music kicks off 2021 with Point C, the third in a series of Various Artist 12-inches. It continues the label's exploration of the heady atmospheres between techno, dub, and ambient, where the boundaries between the dancefloor and headphone introspection are blurred. The five-tracker 'Point C' sees the return of Hiver, Sylve, and Hironori Takahashi to the label and debuts of Foreign Material and Alan Backdrop. Sylve's "Cloudless Raindrops" is a dreamy, feel-good House track that comes out at the perfect time with first spring blooms. Its four to the floor groove layered with shakers and raindrop field recordings set an ideal foundation for hazy pads that move like ebb and flow, allowing filtered piano and arpeggiated wooden perc to shine through like first sun rays after Spring showers. Point C is coming out on March 22 via On Board Music. Straight from Northern Italy, Alessio Meneghello or better known for his moniker Alan Backdrop, has been alluring his listeners through his productions characterized with deep atmospheres and a mixture of different genres. Simply put, Alan’s fascination is a reflection of his passion for electronic music and inspiration he gets from the world around. He is the kind of producer that certainly enjoys his studio jam sessions—this is the reason why he spends most of the time in his studio tweaking knobs on synthesizers, recording and experimenting with the aim to capture and create his exceptional sound. Alan Backdrop released his debut album, VR Plan, in 2013 on Prologue Music, an album that includes some of his pioneering tracks, such as “Cherber,” “Medel,” and “Siere.” Shortly, he managed to create his second album, Eria, released in 2014 on Ekar Records, label and platform with which he has a long-lasting relationship and where he released a big part of his discography. Amongst the others, the two techno EPs released for "Mental Modern" and "Semantica Records" in 2018 are noteworthy, while the last works seeing the light in 2019 are a deep techno 12" for the Czech "Harmony Records" collective and a massive trancy track called "Nizaj" for Nina Kraviz's "трип Recordings". Alessio's side project is a_000, born from the unprompted come across of him and Enrico Rlt, which resulted in the creation of "Road to Nauta", the very first wax from Ekar Records and "Ness Reworks 001", a 12" containing two original tracks plus two remixes from the label founder and friend Ness. In addition to spending most of the time in his studio, Alan Backdrop performs in various festivals—the latest in which he performed were Modem Festival and Parallel— and in different clubs and musical events. Fascinated by electronic music and concentrated in the realization of atmospheric musical journeys is the best way to describe Alan Backdrop. https://soundcloud.com/alan-backdrop Before the Light Album: alanbackdrop.bandcamp.com/album/before-the-light Artwork: Martina Campoli https://www.instagram.com/_nessunome_/

Hello! Friends of the Monument. Our guest for this episode is Luigi Tozzi(@luigitozzi). An Italian based producer with releases on influential labels like Dynamic Reflection and Hypnus Records (Sweden). We could expect to hear more from Luigi in the future as you could read about in the Q&A. On the note of “future”, this mix showcases a futuristic landscape of techno sounds and grooves. A real treat for the mind. 1. Which DJ would you like to share a beer and a conversation with? Why? Probably with the guys from Northern Electronics, especially with Acronym. I am paying a lot of attention to their output and like it very much, it's interesting to me how they express all a similar mood in their music, but keeping a very distinctive and individual touch. They are very careful not to unveil too much about themselves, which is something that I respect, but I'd be very curious to know a bit more about their methods and workflow. 2. How do you make your music? And whats up with the deep and sci-fi sound style? I make my music with an hybrid setup, I own some analog machines (Ms20 mini/Microbrute and a couple drum machines) but I tend to work and process a lot in the box with Ableton and some plugin bundles. This is the way I will continue to work in my solo project, but in the future I am planning to make a collaboration with a friend here in Rome which will be centered only on machines. I think that jamming and arranging live can be very stimulating for creativity and I'm very looking forward to give it a try. 3. What's happening in the future? (releases, gigs etc) A lot is happening in the next months, with Hypnus we will release a LP with great artists (such as Cassegrain,Ness, Svreca, Mike Parker, Alan Backdrop, Orphx, Cio d'Or and Edit Select) remixing our works from the past year. This will be released in January and in the following months I already have three solo releases confirmed and some remixes. Also I am very excited about starting to work on a live set, I know this won't be easy and will take some time but it's an objective I have fixed as a goal for 2015. 4. Any words to the people out there mesmerized by your sound? No I'll just take the chance to say THANK YOU to everyone who is supporting what I am doing, I would have never expected my first two releases to go out of stock that fast and I am very grateful for this. http://outis-music.com/artists/luigi-tozzi Artwork: (esa.int) True-colour image of Mars seen by OSIRIS Tracklist: 1)Sigha - Suspension 2)Claudio PRC - Echoes 3)Yuka - Umrao is Waiting 4)Voices From The Lake - Drop1 5)Refracted - Enlightenment 6)Voices From The Lake - Drop2 7)Luigi Tozzi - Chemosynthesis (Claudio PRC remix) 8)Etapp Kyle - Empty Mind 9)Donato Dozzy - Sotto ma Sotto 10)Evigt Morker - Nixa 11)Eastern Renaissance - 42°19'53 N 12)SS/S Siglo2 13)Blind Observatory - Beneath A Steel Sky 14)Silent Servant - Invocation of Lust 15)Abdulla Rashim - Asayita 1 16)TM404 202/303/303/303/808 (Svreca Remix) 17)Abdulla Rashim - Semien Terara 1 18)Edit Select - The Passing 19)Edit Select - Phlox Intro
