Today's topic is exciting: toxic masculinity, which might be better termed “functional masculinity.” I'm joined by Alex Frankel, who grew up in San Francisco clearly understanding that the definition of hotness was dictated by beautiful people in popular magazines. During his entire childhood, he felt trapped in his fat body and hated how he looked. He finally realized that being hot was more than perfect abs and bulging biceps but more of an attitude. Alex is now a successful plus-size model, and he's a body-acceptance advocate and role model for fat guys all around the world. He created the Hot Fat Guy Club to dispel the myths around diet, culture, fatphobia, and other fat people stereotypes. His goal was to create a welcoming community where people are celebrated and not shamed for their body types. Why do I love this topic? It's because men are not often talked about in the body positivity movement. Join us for a new perspective from a Hot Fat Guy! Show Highlights: ● An overview of Dr. Ronald Levant's Seven Tenets of Traditional Masculine Ideology ● Where the problem of masculinity originates because of deeply entrenched patriarchy, traditional masculine values, programming, and gender policing ● Fascinating trends in how young boys and girls segregate themselves until puberty hits ● Why Alex believes a lack of empathy and respect for other human beings are core issues with today's masculinity ● How we are taught the power differential by society around relationships and rejection ● How programmed traditional masculinity can be dormant until it flares up later in life ● The link between church and religious propaganda and traditional masculinity ● Why men have been programmed by traditional masculinity around vulnerability and feeling shame in showing emotions ● Three things to note around weaponized vulnerability, emotional safety, and caring feelings ● An example about the inability to express or understand emotions Resources and Links: Connect with Alex Frankel and the Hot Fat Guy Club: TikTok and Instagram Mentioned in this episode: Therapy Chat podcast and The Tough Standard: The Hard Truths About Masculinity and Violence by Ronald F. Episode trigger warning for anti-semitism and abusive language. On August 7th, 2024, Olivia tweeted: "Can my husband find out who I am voting for in the Presidential Election?" We've been getting this question a lot, so we rounded up some helpful facts.” This one tweet became a national conversation, and a lot of people had a lot of things to say about it. Alex grew up in the SF Bay Area where the definition of “hotness” was dictated by “beautiful” people in popular magazines and TV shows. His entire childhood, he felt trapped in his fat body and hated how he looked. That was until he realized what he had been taught his whole life was a lie. Hotness was more than perfect abs and bulging biceps, it was an attitude. And that he had! Alex is also a Professional Opera Singer, an industry that he thought would be accepting of his fat body. Boy was he wrong. When Alex began his modeling career in 2016, the entire experience was a fever dream. Fast forward and now Alex is a successful plus-size model, body acceptance advocate and role model to fat guys all around the world. He can currently be seen in every Target in the United States. Alex has worked with Lululemon, Target, Wrangler, Kohls, L'Oreal, Polo Ralph Lauren, Izod, Haband, Kirkland, The Everyman Project, & Arrested Movement. He is the CEO, Founder, and Chief Hot Fat Guy of the Hot Fat Guy Club, an organization he started to dispel the myths around diet culture, fatphobia, and other fat-people stereotypes. The Hot Fat Guy Club is a global, inclusive, exclusive community. It is dedicated to empowering Fat, Big & Tall, Cis, Transgender, and Nonbinary folks, and the people that love them. The Mission of the HFGC is to show the world that Hotness does not come from the outside. Hotness comes from how you carry and care for yourself and others. The HFGC is a club powered by joy and self-acceptance. We are a support system that encourages, educates, uplifts and inspires fellow members to overcome societal “norms” and embrace their inner Hot Fat Guy–all while having some outrageous fun doing so! Men are dramatically underrepresented in the body positivity movement. Although we have made great strides with broadening the aperture of the types of larger bodies that define beautiful, the movement is primarily led by women. With big love to our sisters and non-binary brethren, HFGC advocates and creates opportunity for body positivity for Hat Fat Guys giving them a voice and community in an underrepresented marketplace. He created the HFGC because he wanted a community where people are celebrated, not shamed, for their body type. Becoming a model gave Alex his most important job and achievement ever, becoming the Role Model to little fat kids like him, that he never had growing up. Friend and guest of the show Ian Shiver comment it, friend Alex Frankel storied it. Will we get a prediction of what this podcast might turn out to be in the future? Is there an end game? Do people still listen to podcasts? Am I talking into the ether. Do manifestations still exist? Let's talk about the future. In this episode, I was joined by Alex Frankel to chat about Azure Bicep! Bicep is a new DSL that transpiles down to native ARM templates. Except that it greatly improved upon the very hard to read and write ARM templates, making Infrastructure as Code in Azure a far nicer user experience. We delved into the Bicep language, the tooling, a bit of the history - and even geeked out a bit on how awesome .NET has become! For a full list of show links, see the website here
