FYC FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION Campaign…BREATHE - BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM…starring MAGNUM P.I.'s @stephenhillacts with music featured by GRAMMY Winner @shabazzpalaces …Exec Produced by @shantillylace of HBO's Heaven's Gate…during the 10th year anniversary of the killing of ERIC GARNER…Voting on the ACADEMY SCREENING ROOM begins DEC 9-13th 2024BREATHE is a short film narrative and short dramatic fantasy about the last day of Eric Garner's life. For Eric, it's a normal day in his life in his neighborhood, but for the rest of the world, it's the day Eric faces the reality of taking his last breath.  The film stars @stephenhillacts (Magnum P.I.) as Eric Garner. On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner, an African American man, was killed in the New York City borough of Staten Island by Daniel Pantaleo, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) officer, after the latter put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him.Video footage of the incident generated widespread national attention and raised questions about the use of force by law enforcement. In an interview with Flintside.com, Burton-Oare stated that "she recognized that this story was not just about Eric Garner, but also about Ramsey Orta who filmed Garner's deadly arrest. By giving him a place in her project, Burton-Oare aimed to highlight the interconnectedness of their lives and experiences."Executive produced by Shannon E. Riggs, the cast also includes Jason Galloza, Vince Fazio, Luke Leonard, Afrim Gjonbalaj, and Shanel Riley. The featured song in the film comes from Grammy Award winner Ishmael Butler, best known for his work with Digable Planets and Shabazz Palaces.Listen/Follow here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pbs-262-vote-for-breathe-for-2025-academy-awards-best/id1486119466?i=1000680273918

July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Erik Blood is the technical wizard of the Black Constellation. He's worked with nearly every artist in the Constellation and has left an undeniable footprint on Seattle music at large. But he's more than just a “behind the scenes” force. When Blood steps up to the mic, he uses every instrument and genre in his arsenal to convey his truths and intersecting identities. On this episode, Blood relays his journey into music production from recording tracks on a Teddy Ruxpin to producing pivotal Seattle records for Shabazz Palaces, Tacocat, THEESatisfaction, Moondoggies, and more. Blood also digs into his solo work, the way sexuality plays into his music, and growing up in a Black and white home. Blood's love of music and skill in capturing its recorded essence knows no boundaries. Otis Calvin, III – aka OCnotes  – is a prolific, renegade artist. A songwriter, producer, and visionary who not only transcends genre but denies any type of barrier – musical or otherwise. With a staggering nearly 300 albums to his name, OC is as prolific as they come. Fiercely independent in all senses of the word, Otis doesn't compromise his vision for anything or anyone – let alone capitalist industry structures that would only hold back his astounding output. He's the Dennis Rodman in a collective full of Dennis Rodmans.  In this episode, OC gives his candid thoughts about the music industry, his always expanding catalog, and the punk roots that inform his art and approach. For OC, the process of making music itself is a spiritual practice. Beneath all the grit and tenacity is a deep love for music and expression.  Listen to a playlist of music from the episode and read the transcript on KEXP.org. Nicholas Galanin is the force behind musical projects Ya Tseen, Indian Agent, and Silver Jackson. Based out of Sitka, Alaska, he creates art – both musical and physical – from and for his Tlingit community. Continuum is core to Galanin's being. Being of both Tlingit and Unangax̂ heritage, Galanin's work is concerned with serving his community and creating space for their voices, art, and culture in a world that has intentionally tried to strip it away. His collaborations as part of the Black Constellation represent an important statement of solidarity between Black and Indigenous artistic communities. In this episode, we journey with Galanin through his numerous musical projects, his HomeSkillet festival and label, and some of his various exhibits and large scale art installations, like the “Never Forget” piece that saw him placing the words “INDIAN LAND” in Palm Springs in the style of the Hollywood sign. Galanin's work is a mirror to the past while reflecting toward the future. Listen to a playlist of music from the episode and read the transcript on KEXP.org. Maikoiyo Alley-Barnes is a multi-disciplinary artist – a filmmaker, writer, designer, and founding member of the Black Constellation. His work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum National History in New York, and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle – including a series of exhibitions in collaboration with several members of the Constellation. He's also directed music videos and short films for Shabazz Palaces, THEESatisfaction, and Porter Ray. In this episode, Larry Mizell, Jr. hosts an extended conversation with Alley-Barnes. The two discuss not just Alley-Barnes' work, but the pivotal art and community work of his parents, the engine of erasure that resounds throughout Seattle, and grander ideas around attribution, continuum, and authenticity. If every member of the Black Constellation is a star, Alley-Barnes is akin to gravity – an unseen force putting pieces into motion and holding disparate artistic worlds together. Og frá því um miðja síðustu öld hafa skrautklæddar fjallkonur flutt ávarp á þjóðhátíðardaginn. Fjölbreytileiki samfélagsins hefur aukist undanfarna áratugi og samhliða því hafa fjallkonurnar orðið fjölbreyttari í útliti og uppruna. En enn hefur það aldrei gerst að sú manneskja sem valin er fjallkonan í Reykjavík hefur verið karlmaður. Louis Chude-Sokei is a Nigerian-Jamaican- American writer and scholar at the University of Seattle, Washington. In this episode, he discusses the music culture surrounding Nigeria's internet scammers (known as “Yahoozees”), his own experience as a black immigrant in Los Angeles' Inglewood neighborhood during the era of NWA, and the way blackface performance is perceived outside the U.S. He's the author of The Last Darky: Bert Williams, Black-on- Black Minstrelsy, and the African Diaspora (Duke University, 2006), which examines the life of Bert Williams, a top vaudeville performer-- a black blackface performer-- and one of the most famous entertainers of his era. His new book, The Sound of Culture: Diaspora and Black Technopoetics (Wesleyan, 2015), tackles the complex relationships between blackness, robotics, and technology. In this way, the book is in conversation with Afrofuturism. First coined by the cultural critic Mark Dery, Afrofuturism is a growing field of art, music, and academic scholarship which finds its roots in sci-fi imagery in black culture: Sun Ra, George Clinton, Octavia Butler, and Samuel R. Delaney. Afrofuturism seeks to find alternates to the current sometimes harrowing circumstances of contemporary black life through imagined futures and emergent possibilities. Its expression is visible in the work of Janelle Monae, producer Flying Lotus, and rap duo Shabazz Palaces. In his conversation with Ben Bush for the Organist, Chude-Sokei emphasizes the emerging field's pre-20th century roots as well as non-US aspects that have until now fallen outside the critical paradigm related to Afrofuturism—from PT Barnum's black cyborg to the metaphysical echo of instrumental dub reggae.   Links: A playlist based on songs discussed in this episode (and in The Sound of Culture)  Louis Chude-Sokei on Joice Heth, PT Barnum's black cyborg Bina48 on the Organist  Video trailer Credits: Interview by Ben Bush.
