On today's episode, I talk to filmmaker J. Blakeson. Originally from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, J. started out making low-budget shorts of his own. This eventually led to him being able to make a slightly larger film, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, in 2009, starring Gemma Arterton and Eddie Marsan. Over the next 14 years, J. wrote and directed many other films and TV shows; some highlights include the Gunpowder miniseries for BBC One/HBO and 2021's I Care a Lot for which Rosamund Pike won a Golden Globe. Most recently, J. wrote and directed the Disney+ series Culprits, which just debuted last week, and it is wonderful! J Blakeson is the writer/director behind the new Netflix original, I Care a Lot, starring Rosamund Pike. J started his career like many of us did, making films with his friends and just trying to figure it out. By 21, he had his first agent and went about trying to get his scripts made. After some years of frustration, J took matters into his own hands and wrote a film that he knew he could make himself with the resources he had. That film ended up being his breakout feature, The Disappearance of Alice Creed. Since then, J has carved a spot for himself in the feature and television world with his unique voice, leading to his latest and possibly best film.

We also discussed Dark Pheonix and Ma, even though they're not part of our 3120 DVD bulk purchase. Sometimes you just gotta watch other stuff too.

My guest today is the actress Gemma Arterton. We spoke about the new film she's in called The Escape, which she also executive produced. Her breakthrough role was in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace (2008), playing Bond Girl Strawberry Fields, which won her an Empire Award for Best Newcomer. She played the lead role in the film Their Finest (2017). She was the title star of the film The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009). She is known for her roles in the fantasy films Clash of the Titans (2010), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Byzantium (2013), and as the character Gretel in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013). She played Joan in Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan at Donmar Warehouse, December 2016.The Escape is an intimate portrait of a married woman who seemingly has it all. Married young, shehas all the trappings of a successful life: a house, a husband, children and a nice lifestyle. But she is unhappy and yearns for more, something that she is unable to put her finger on.We discuss escapism, acting, social media, relationships, improvising on set and why the topics in this film are close to her heart. Have You Seen..? The question to start all movie discussions. This episode, Tom & Kieran talk about The Shining and The Disappearance of Alice Creed. As we’ve mentioned on the show, the blog and Twitter, the only way we can talk about Alice Creed is to completely spoil it, so if you want to see it but haven’t, we recommend saving this episode until you have. You have been warned.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 132 Coming to you live from the 10th Annual Lebowski Fest, we hang out (mostly in the parking lot) and discuss movies and other geeky activities. Then we interview James Hoosier, aka Liam from “The Big Lebowski“!!! Then in our usual askew fashion our movie discussion this week is…Raising Arizona. But not before a One from the Vaults memory from William Forsythe himself!! Then we attempt to do Raising Arizona justice as we spiral into an examination of the Coen Brothers entire career. Then bowling! Plus as we rub elbows with a sea of Dudes and Walters, we eventually mention…passing geeky activities on to your children, Woody Allen surrogates, Red Road, drilling holes in sheet metal, throw the bunny in the box, Midnight in Paris, mom’s different reality plane, being a John Huston uber-fan, Party Down, beating Charles Grodin’s feet with a baseball bat, reading Harry Potter, Con Air, The Return of Martin Guerre, Fight Club, running over a goose, daddy’s skull-crushingly depressing favorite films, John Goodman, the poker tell of horror movies, now you’ll both work in the store, Burn After Reading, trying to hold a tablespoon and a half of mashed potatoes in your mouth, bye Glen Campbell, Drive Angry, Horrible Bosses, mashing up Fancies, Drugstore Cowboy, The disappearance of Alice Creed, kicking in a few casting agents doors, senseless death, A Hole in the Head, calling a number on a flyer at bowling alley, A Serious Man, Kathy Bates hobbling babies, Nikolai Gogol the overcoat, No Country For Old Men, trying to explain and apologize for your movie’s premise, babies in sunglasses, Iron Man 2, Owen Wilson, Undercover Blues, Henry V, who can make Don Cheadle a bad actor?, outlaw danger - but still gentle at the same time, Fat City, The Wicker Man, Midnight Run, Leonard Smalls and the big question…why are you wearing your clothes during sex? Spoiler Alert: In this episode, we fully discuss Raising Arizona, and along the way may very well spoil all the other Coen Brothers movies. You have been warned… “Yeah, I heard a lot of babies got fired.”
Movie Meltdown - Episode 120 This week we return to the coffee shop for another edition of The Caffeinated Movie Geek and to one of our most popular segments - The Grind. This episode a listener asks: Does a celebrity's personal life (and occasionally, terrible actions) effect how you view them as an artist? An interesting question. So we address the overall idea and try to decide what is the dividing line and how far is too far? And while inventing new and horrifying blends of coffee we bring up… Paul Bettany, Overboard, fur purse, Philip Seymour Hoffman naked, Halle Berry, Harmony Korine is on notice, James Dean, the new adventures of old Greg, Justified, Management, Christian Bale, MacBeth, Valkyrie, Jennifer Connelly, Paranormal Activity 2, The Disappearance of Alice Creed, R. Kelly, Charles Darwin, Jesco White, lowering your standards to make movies, Tom Cruise, Bono, having a funnel cake stand in your yard, Robert Duvall, Jon Bon Jovi, Katie Holmes, John Updike watched Overboard, Jason Lee, John Waters, a right-wing dwarf, Bob Dylan, put that in your fur purse, Michael Jackson, Vincent Gallo, Tina Fey, Pee Wee Herman, Scientology, pasta cup sizes, Mission: Impossible, Trash Humpers, Alec Baldwin, Ellen DeGeneres, Creation, Richard Gere, The Dancing Outlaw, Broadcast News, Steve Zahn is not bright, Miles Davis, Goldie’s peak, The Office, Charlie Sheen, Albert Brooks, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sting, Shattered Glass, a baby monkey riding a pig, Woody Allen, Russell Crowe, Gangster Number One, romantic comedies, Devil‘s in the Elevator, Splice, Roman Polański and Google searches that get you in trouble. “Everybody has their skeletons in the closet I guess?”
The first half of a two-parter this week, as we had a lot to cover! First and foremost, we review Iron Man 2, and despite all quite liking it, somehow end up arguing anyway. We've also got some news about Lindsay Lohan and Cowboys and Aliens and surgery (three separate stories - separate the words into the most amusing combinations), a review of The Disappearance of Alice Creed, a couple of your emails, and In This Week in Movie History. Oh, and an unexpectedly innuendo-ridden finish - apologies in advance. Catch the second half next week!
