“The Nose” may be Nikolai Gogol’s most famous short story. It’s a surrealist — and self-consciously, self-awarely surrealist — story about a man whose nose disappears from his face and reappears in another man’s biscuits. And other places. There’s a moment toward the end of Susanne Fusso’s translation when the narrator says, “The strangest and most incomprehensible thing of all — is that writers can choose such plots.” Well, yes. Nikolai Gogol was a 19th-century Russian/Ukrainian novelist and playwright. One of his best-known plays, The Inspector, opens this week at the Yale Repertory Theatre in New Haven. And that short story, “The Nose,” might well be intertwined with the mythology of our little public radio show. This hour, a look at the writer Nikolai Gogol. Inspired by actual events that had a lasting impact on the scuba tourism industry and left a mystery that will never be solved, Open Water.     All that and we prepare for the delights of October. Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (1809 - 1852)Translated by D. J. Hogarth Dead Souls (Russian: Мёртвые души) by Nikolai Gogol, Russian writer, was first published in 1842, and is one of the most prominent works of 19th-century Russian literature. Gogol himself saw it as an "epic poem in prose", and within the book as a "novel in verse". Despite supposedly completing the trilogy's second part, Gogol destroyed it shortly before his death. Although the novel ends in mid-sentence (like Sterne's Sentimental Journey), it is usually regarded as complete in the extant form.In Russia before the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, landowners were entitled to own serfs to farm their land. Serfs were for most purposes considered the property of the landowner, and could be bought, sold, or mortgaged against, as any other chattel. To count serfs (and people in general), the measure word "soul" was used: e.g., "six souls of serfs". The plot of the novel relies on "dead souls" (i.e., "dead serfs") which are still accounted for in property registers. On another level, the title refers to the "dead souls" of Gogol's characters, all of which visualise different aspects of poshlost (an untranslatable Russian word which is perhaps best rendered as "self-satisfied inferiority", moral and spiritual, with overtones of middle-class pretentiousness, fake significance, and philistinism). --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/librivox1/support

In his adaptation, Bedi moved quite far from the original, only taking the coat as a leitmotif. While Gogol's story revolves around a man's desire for a new coat, Garam Coat, the short story is a poignant story of a man who struggles between his own needs and his longing to fulfill his family's desires. The movie version, starring Balraj Sahani goes a few steps further and explores the ups and downs in the protagonist's married life. ----- Rajinder Singh Bedi was a pillar of the Progressive Writers Movement. After the partition he moved to Bombay where he made his mark as a dialogue writer, screenplay writer and director. There are many monuments to Cecil Rhodes, the mining magnate and politician who founded the DeBeers Company, around Cape Town, South Africa. These statues have been vandalized and reconstituted, respectively, by his detractors and supporters—the latter camp embedded a GPS device inside concrete within a replacement for a Rhodes statue's decapitated head. In the December 2021 issue, Hedley Twidle, a professor at the University of Cape Town who teaches Nikolai Gogol's story “The Nose” every semester, adopted a unique approach to this ongoing battle. In the last couple of weeks I've been recording and editing the first episodes of the new series Beyond a Joke. In this series, I'm asking guests to bring an object that has made them laugh.
