You remind me of the babe! This week on 3 Guys and a Flick, we enter Jim Henson's strange, musical, puppet-filled fantasy world as we review the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth. This episode takes us through Sarah's journey to rescue baby Toby from David Bowie's mesmerizing Goblin King, Jareth. Along the way, we talk Bowie's unforgettable presence, Jennifer Connelly's early performance, Henson's ambitious puppetry, the movie's darker coming-of-age themes, the soundtrack, the creepy factor, the Bog of Eternal Stench, and whether nostalgia does a lot of heavy lifting for this beloved fantasy film. Is Labyrinth a magical cult classic, an awkward 80s fever dream, or a technically impressive movie trapped somewhere between kids' film and adult fantasy? Grab your crystal balls, watch out for helping hands, and join us as we review the good, the bad, and the absurd.

Acclaimed genre filmmaker Joe Johnston (Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Captain America: The First Avenger) directed this highly anticipated Disney adaptation of the titular graphic novel from the 1980's.  It takes place in the 1940's Los Angeles where aspiring pilot Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) is trying to make a name for himself on the flying circuit until one day, he suddenly finds a mysterious metal device along with his friend/mechanic Peevy played by Oscar-winner Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Catch 22). What they soon realize is that this device is actually a secret prototype jet-pack which the local Mafia, the FBI, AND the Nazis (!) are all on the hunt for. :o So Cliff tries on the jet-pack, is able to fly, and suddenly becomes....The Rocketeer!  And what results is a fun throwback adventure which was initially a flop upon release in the Summer of 1991 but would eventually garner a cult following.  The stellar cast also includes Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Dalton, and the late, great Paul Sorvino. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Step inside the Goblin King's maze with this special live episode of Cinebuds! Recorded at the historic Oriental Theatre during the 2026 Milwaukee Film Festival, this episode celebrates the 40th anniversary (and 4K restoration) of the fantasy classic, Labyrinth. For this very special occasion, Dori and Kpolly enlisted some help from Steve Horton, Eisner-winning author of the graphic novel Bowie: Stardust, Ray Guns, and Moonage Daydreams. He shares a few fascinating insider stories about Labyrinth from his research, including how Bowie would use a puppet off-camera to charm baby Toby into staying calm during filming. The trio also dive into: Why Bowie was the perfect Jareth (and which other '80s icons almost got the part). A tribute to Jim Henson's timeless practical effects and the lovable "gentle giant," Ludo. Hilarious behind-the-scenes secrets, from the infamous "codpiece" to Jennifer Connelly's real reaction to the Bog of Eternal Stench. And it wouldn't be a live event without getting the audience involved, including a few brave souls who offer their questions and "hot takes."#####Cinebuds is sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Door Company.

Jes Battis' new book, It's Only Forever. Labyrinth (ECW Press, 2026) is a wild, intimate, and political deep dive into Jim Henson's 1986 classic starring David Bowie and its cast of lovable, gender-defying goblins. In the 40 years since Labyrinth's release, Jim Henson's cult classic starring a menagerie of goblin puppets, the conversation about it has only grown louder. Fans are still holding viewing parties and masquerade balls, and creating memes inspired by David Bowie's sardonic and sexy goblin king, numerous Etsy crafts, and even a Japanese video game. But what makes the film so enduring, beyond its technical mastery and clever script, is how it presents childhood as something dangerous, heroic, and even queer. It's Only Forever explores Labyrinth as an '80s time capsule that both reflects and challenges its era, offering its young audience an alternative to conservatism and soulless economics, at a time when U.S. president Ronald Reagan ignored the HIV/AIDS crisis, pushing queerness further into the shadows. As Sarah, played by a teenaged Jennifer Connelly, faces down the king and his destructive whims, she exclaims, “You have no power over me,” and in that moment she is everyone who has ever felt marginalized, who has instead turned to the goblins over social and political toxicity every single time. From the costuming to the twisting plot, this classic example of 1980s fantasy shows us that the magic and comfort of childhood never need to be discarded as we are forced to enter a world that may very well seek to destroy us. Instead, Labyrinth reveals a universal and beautiful truth: that our strength comes from what we have always known ourselves to be — beastly, loving, and wildly joyful. Send us Fan MailWe're diving deep into Alex Proyas' 1998 neo-noir sci-fi thriller Dark City — and we came out the other side completely won over. This one is a full recommendation from both of us, and if you've been sleeping on it, this episode is your sign to finally watch it.We start at the beginning with a conversation about the film's complicated theatrical release, including the infamous studio-mandated voiceover that opens the original cut and how the Director's Cut restores Proyas' intended vision. It's a fascinating case study in how test screenings and studio interference can shape — and sometimes undermine — a film's impact, and we get into all of it.From there we work through the film itself: Rufus Sewell's compelling lead performance, a career-best turn from Kiefer Sutherland as the hunched and unsettling Dr. Schreber, and Jennifer Connelly bringing real emotional weight to what could have been an underdeveloped role. We also spend time on the Strangers — their design, their purpose, and the genuinely eerie mythology Proyas builds around them.At its core, Dark City is a film about memory and identity — what makes us who we are, and whether those things can be manufactured or taken away. We explore how those themes hold up today and why they give the film a philosophical depth that sets it apart from other genre films of the era.We also get into the production side — the remarkable practical effects work, the budget constraints that paradoxically pushed the filmmakers toward more creative solutions, and the clear cinematic DNA connecting Dark City to everything from Metropolis to Blade Runner to The Matrix (which filmed on the same sets just a year later). And we close out celebrating the film's legacy, its critical reappraisal over the years, and why physical media is still the best way to experience this one properly.Dark City deserved a much bigger audience in 1998. This episode delves into the profound and unsettling narrative of "Requiem for a Dream," a cinematic exploration of addiction and its devastating repercussions on the lives of four individuals in Coney Island. The discourse commences with a critical appraisal of the film's impact, notably its provocative themes and the performances that propelled actors Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly into the limelight. We express a complex relationship with the film, recognizing its artistic merit while grappling with the overwhelming darkness it portrays. We engage in a thorough examination of the film's pacing and narrative structure, contemplating whether certain elements could have been executed with greater efficacy to enhance the viewer's engagement. One day after the 2026 Academy Awards and right smack in the middle of Oscar Month is the one that won its own 4 trophies 25 years ago. A Beautiful Mind is a touching love story about a real-life paranoid schizophrenic: Nobel-Prize winner John Nash (and his put-upon wife Alicia). Ron Howard & his team play fast and very loose with the facts, including how Nash's condition manifested AND casting Jennifer Connelly as Nash's Hispanic wife. Still, though, Russell Crowe is dynamite as our main man and the supporting performances by Ed Harris, Paul Bettany & Christopher Plummer are terrific. And Howard does well to make a movie about math, but doesn't overload us with it. BK's Blacklist is back, and this time TeaRon and BK revisit one of the most provocative and unsettling films in Black cinema history: John Singleton's Higher Learning.Released over 30 years ago, this controversial cult classic feels disturbingly more relevant today. Set on the fictional Columbus University campus, Higher Learning traps America's most volatile social issues inside a pressure cooker—where race, masculinity, identity, white supremacy, patriarchy, and violence collide with devastating consequences. The film features early performances from future Black Hollywood heavyweights and cultural icons including Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Regina King, Laurence Fishburne, Busta Rhymes, alongside Kristy Swanson and Jennifer Connelly. Each character represents a different path through college life, exposing how ideology, insecurity, and power can radicalize young minds.TeaRon and BK unpack Singleton's bold vision, debate whether the film still holds up, and confront the uncomfortable truth at its core: the more things change, the more they stay the same.Does Higher Learning still hit too close to home in today's America—or was it always meant to be a warning we ignored?––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Follow Us:IG: @tearonworld / @bkwitda4fa4TT: @tearon__ / @bkgostupidFB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacksTHRD: @ubiquitousblacks––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS Podcast:Ubiquitous Blacks is an internationally focused podcast that explores similarities and differences of the Black/African diaspora experiences around the world. This week on The Rotten Horror Picture Show Podcast, Clay and Amanda are taking a trip into the strange, dreamlike world of Dario Argento's 1985 cult oddity Phenomena. It's one of Argento's most notorious films from his wildly experimental '80s era — full of surreal imagery, pulsing Goblin music, murder mysteries, and a young Jennifer Connelly wandering through the Swiss countryside. Clay and Amanda break down the film's off-the-wall tone, its place in Argento's career, and why Phenomena stands out even among the director's already very weird filmography. It's stylish, confusing, beautiful, and deeply unsettling in ways that only Argento could manage. Now, I should probably admit something up front: I haven't actually seen Phenomena. But I'm still excited! Why? Because I've been assured — by absolutely no one — that there are probably no bugs in it. And that's important to me. Bugs and I do not get along. Spiders? No. Beetles? Absolutely not. Anything with too many legs or a weird crunch? I'm out. Horror movies already ask a lot of me emotionally — I don't need ants crawling into my soul on top of it.So I'm going into this episode feeling optimistic. An Argento movie without bugs sounds great! Just some light murder, some eerie atmosphere, maybe a monkey with a razor (that's fine), but definitely no swarming insects, crawling larvae, or close-ups of mandibles clicking together. Clay and Amanda seem excited, which reassures me. They wouldn't do that to me, right? They know my boundaries. Surely.Anyway, if you're a fan of Italian horror, surreal storytelling, or films that operate entirely on nightmare logic, this episode is for you. I'll be listening too — cautiously, fingers crossed, telling myself everything is fine. And if at any point they mention insects, flies, maggots, or entomology in general? I will be screaming, throwing my headphones, and pretending this episode never happened. But until then, I'm happy. Ignorance is bliss. And do forget to head over to patreon.com/thepenskyfile to follow along this year as Clay and Amanda do a deep dive on sequels!

The term often used to describe the 1998 Alex Proyas film, 'Dark City' is "Proto-Matrix" given the many similarities between the two movies. Fair or not, they do have a lot in common but I think the comparison does a disservice to what is still a very clever and well made genre-film that largely holds up today (minus some questionable early CG effects). The 4K re-release gives it a fresh coat of paint, looking extremely sharp on modern televisions, accentuating the mostly dark and moody imagery of this sci-fi film noir, and given it's title this is all very fitting. Alex Proyas has some bid ideas here; what is the human soul? Are we the sum of our memories? Can memories be distilled into chemistry? Is love transcendent? Many of these themes are explored with depth, with answers to many of the films mysteries being laid bare in mostly satisfying way. Performances are strong, with everyone seemingly understanding the assignment, though there isn't much for the female characters to do here. Which is unfortunate as what we do get from Jennifer Connelly is intriguing, if lacking depth. On the whole, despite being pretty weird, this is still a very fun movie, if a bit silly at times, that was unfortunately overshadowed by the phenomenon that was 'The Matrix' dropping the following year.

Bring Me The Axe! Horror Podcast

We close out our Halloween Hootenanny series of all Bring Me The Axe episodes all October with an episode dedicated to a listener who really made our year. This year's series caps off with a look at the gloriously frantic, unfocused shit show that is Dario Argento's Phenomena. Falling very early in the acting career of American movie star, Jennifer Connelly, it's kind of amazing that she finished this production and continued to act given that her finger was literally separated from her body thanks to an angry monkey that also actually slashed up the face of Argento's soon-to-be ex-wife, Daria Nicolodi. You have Donald Pleasance putting on a clinic for phoning it in and yet the entire movie manages to be charming and extremely enjoyable, one of Argento's most Freudian movies, for good or for bad. When Jennifer, the daughter of an American movie star is shipped off to a Swiss school for girls she lands there at the worst possible time as a murderer is on the loose killing young women. Lucky for her, she has the incredible power to speak to and command insects and she uses this marvelous ability to crack the case since the cops are doing fuck-all to solve it, themselves. Along the way she teams up with a wheelchair-bound entomologist and his helper monkey to get to the bottom of things.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon:https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/
