Check out a preview of the latest episode of Are You Mad at Me?, the podcast about the movie Shattered Glass hosted by PubliCola co-founders Erica Barnett and Josh Feit. Shattered Glass, starting Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard, Chloe Sevigny, and Steve Zahn (among many other names you'll recognize), is about a journalism scandal in the late 1990s in which a reporter, Stephen Glass, was found to have fabricated dozens of stories for The New Republic, Harpers, and many other traditional media outlets. Our guest for this month's show, Adam Penenberg (portrayed by Zahn in the film), was working for an early online outlet called Forbes Digital Tool when his editor, Kambiz Foroohar, demanded to know why he'd been scooped by Stephen Glass on a story about teenage hackers. As we now know, the story was completely fabricated—and Penenberg was the one who unraveled the fraud. In our interview, Penenberg tells us what it was like to uncover the story and reflects on what it was like to be a reporter for a digital startup going up against a venerable institution like The New Republic. He also offers his thoughts on why Glass decided to fabricate stories instead of just reporting them, and tells us what it was like talking to Steve Zahn as he was developing his character for the movie.Listen, like, and subscribe to Are You Mad at Me? on Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.Send us a text! Welcome back to the Constant reader Podcast, and thanks for bearing with us during our long hiatus. We have gathered up quite a few of our favorite repeat guests for 2025 though, so i am sure you will forgive us. We have lined up Kim C from the year of underrated Stephen King podcast with another step towards the Dark Tower. The gentlemen from King Con will be giving a report on how their convention on Stephen King, the first of its type, went back in October, and what you might expect from them in the future. Plus Andy Stanton will be back to help me sort out the End of the World As We Know It, the upcoming short story collection based in the world of King's The Stand. Plus we have some new guests, including some big names I can't reveal just yet. Today's guest is one those old friends, James Michels. James was on the show a couple of years ago to talk about The Shawshank Redemption, his own work in the prison industry, and his career as crime writer. We discussed a series of short stories, Life's Dark Corners, that i urge you to seek out. Today however, he is here to discuss The Melody of Shattered Glass, an ambitious epic novel that depicts the fates of the Oro crime family, one of the last bastions of a mafia that is struggling to identify exactly what it is, and what it stands for in the 21st century. But first, James wanted to talk about Stand by Me, Rob Reiner's adaptation of King's novella The Body. It features an incredible cast, a killer soundtrack, a sharp script and has meant a lot of things to a lot of people.I refer to his new book as The Melody of Shattered Glass, when it is, in fact The Melody of Shattered Gold. A thousand apologies to James for misnaming this book, which has an incredible ending and unforgettable characters.....

True events that led to a best-selling book called “Blood and Money”. (Blood, Money, and Dr. John Hill) *** The lighthouse at Eilean Mor was unmanned. The clock on the wall had stopped, no fire was in the grate (nor had one been there for a few days), there was a meal sitting at the table. It looked like someone had set it down with the intention of eating it soon, but it was untouched. Whatever had happened to the men, it had happened to them suddenly. How could three men simply keeping watch over a lighthouse suddenly disappear without a trace? (The Missing Lighthouse Keepers) *** Heidi Wyrick's experiences with the paranormal world started when she was just three years old, when Heidi developed an imaginary friend. The ghost of an old man appeared in her backyard, beckoning Heidi to play with him on the swings. (The Haunting of Heidi Wyrick) *** An angry spirit tries to physically harm a child with broken glass – and on the same night, it terrorizes the child's mother in another room. (Shattered Glass and a Creepy Little Girl) *** An abandoned city in Cuyahoga Valley fuels local urban legends about a chemical spill and murderous Satanists. Welcome to Helltown, Ohio. (Helltown Lives Up To Its Name) *** There are places on this planet that are so feared that people don't have the courage to visit them. Strange stories of mysterious lights, unexplained sightings and vanishings can be so horrifying that fear wins over curiosity to explore the unknown. This week, we're getting dragged by the anchor-cable into an ancient war between angry bureaucrats and aloof teleporters as we jump in to the 2008 forgotbuster Jumper, directed by Doug Liman, and starring Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson, Michael Rooker, Diane Lane, Kristen Stewart and AnnaSophia Robb. After a June full of five-star films, we intentionally picked a stinker this week -- though it's a movie J Mo thrifted out of genuine interest, as the talent both in front of and behind the camera is formidable to say the least, and the movie's barely-explored concept is not without potential. But hey, sometimes the most fun episodes are the ones where we all agree the movie is a big hunk of junk. Meanwhile, Justin's going down the rabbit hole of the original series Star Trek films, while Hayley files a theatrical field report on A Quiet Place: Day One. If you'd like to stream Jumper this week, you can't! It should be on Disney+ or Hulu but it's not. They want it to stay buried. Other works referenced in this episode include Pig, The Great Muppet Caper, Clifford, Set It Up, The Ring, Joy Ride, Hot Rod, Con Air, The Spectacular Now, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Shattered Glass, American Made, Valkyrie, Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Speed, Speed Racer, X2: X-Men United, The Three Amigos, John Wick, The Happening and Behind Enemy Lines. Next week, as Axel Foley returns in a direct-to-Netflix fourth installment, we're winding the clock back 40 years to the 1984 original Beverly Hills Cop, directed by Martin Brest, with Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold, currently streaming in Canada on Netflix and Paramount+. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, Alan, Quinta, and Scott were joined by Lawfare Contributing Editor Eric Ciaramella to talk through the week's big natsec stories, including:“Not Done Nyet.” U.S. foreign assistance is finally on its way to Ukraine, along with additional support from European allies. But will it be enough to solidify or advance the beleaguered Ukrainian military's position? What is the state of the conflict and how does it look set to move forward?“Official Tracts.” Last week, the Supreme Court heard wide-ranging arguments in Trump v. United States, the appeal of Trump's criminal prosecution for events related to Jan. 6 considering his far-reaching claims of presidential immunity. Several of the justices seemed quite committed to weighing in on where the lines of immunity should be drawn (even if few seemed to think they were relevant in this particular case), but there was far less consensus on the actual limits. Where is the Court headed and what will it mean for Trump's prosecution? “Live and Let Modi.” The Washington Post has broken a major story suggesting that the United States inadvertently disrupted a plot by Indian intelligence to assassinate a Sikh dissident (and U.S. national) on U.S. territory. What will this major breach of sovereignty mean for the budding U.S.-India alliance? And how should the Biden administration manage it?For object lessons, Alan got on the Amor Towles admiration train and endorsed both his book “A Gentleman in Moscow” and the forthcoming TV adaptation. Quinta recommended the classic 2003 journalism period piece “Shattered Glass.” Scott log-rolled for a forthcoming project by our friends at Goat Rodeo and Project Brazen: Fur and Loathing, which looks at one of the most significant chemical weapons attacks in U.S. history, which took place at a 2014 convention for furries. And Eric shared a cultural lesson his Italian friend impressed upon him about the impropriety of drinking a cappuccino after 11:00am.To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
