Sydney Film Festival Interview: Ellis Park director Justin Kurzel on being in the orbit of Warren Ellis

Awards Don't Matter

Director Justin Kurzel has crafted a filmography built on exploring the impact of trauma and violence on a nation. Whether it be his excoriating debut film Snowtown or the acts of cautionary storytelling with Nitram and The Order, Kurzel's work questions how violence and trauma lingers in our bodies, our minds, and in our lands. That's a notion that he explores with impressive strength with his first foray into documentary filmmaking, Ellis Park. There's catharsis in Ellis Park, partially because of Warren Ellis and his healing violin, but – as the man says himself – his presence is minimal compared to the presence of Femke and the conservationists. Yet, when paired with Kurzel and editor Nick Fenton, they collectively bring light to a horrifying trade that scars the environment. I'm shaken by Ellis Park because of its presentation of trauma, but equally so for its depiction of empathy, consideration, and support. This is, oddly, my first time talking to Justin Kurzel. Having listened to and read countless interviews by him, I was aware that I would be engaging with someone who is a deeply empathetic soul, yet I was still left disarmed by his connection to his openness about his connection to his work, his family, and to the art of cinema. To support the film, Warren Ellis and Justin Kurzel will be running Q&A sessions around the nation. All of the details are in the show notes, but make sure to pick up tickets in advance when the film kicks off with a virtual Q&A with Warren Ellis at Perth's Luna Leederville cinemas on 5 June, concluding with a Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney exclusive event on 8 June at the State Theatre. Ellis Park then releases wide across Australia on 12 June 2025.The Ellis Park sanctuary is part of the Jakarta Animal Aid Network, a non-government, non-profit organisation that was established in 2004 to protect Indonesian wildlife, with a focusing on animal cruelty and rescuing animals from the noxious illegal animal trade network. To support the organisation, visit EllisPark.org.For the month of June 2025, every dollar from Patreon will be sent as a donation to Ellis Park sanctuary, so please consider joining and supporting the Curb and the sanctuary.Visit Patreon.com/thecurbau, where you can support our work from as little as $1 a month. We're back with an episode featuring just Neil and myself discussing a cinematic topic we both are invested in: The crime/heist genre. The core of this chat is an examination of how the structures of the genre intersect with social, racial, and economic contexts in four specific films. Sparked by our shared admiration for Justin Kurzel's The Order, we trace the lineage of socially conscious crime narratives from classic noir to contemporary thrillers. We consider genre cinema's desire to convey a sense of prestige - think of the notion of elevated horror - and revisit some of the core theoretical foundations of genre as a self-contained system, as proposed by thinkers such as Steve Neale and Rick Altman. Then we tackle four films as case studies: The Order (2023) - Justin Kurzel Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) – Robert Wise Collateral (2004) – Michael Mann Widows (2018) – Steve McQueen We analyse how each of these films, in varying ways, deploy genre frameworks to narrate the struggle for power, identity, and survival, and we interrogate the evolving relationship between cinematic pleasure and political subtext. Shownotes Rick Altman - Film/Genre (London: British Film Institute, 1999) Neil Fox - Ashley Clark Curates BFI's Black Star - Director's Notes Luis M. Welcome to the Cinema Australia Podcast. In this episode I'm joined by Charles Williams to discuss Inside, a prison drama starring Guy Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis, Tammy MacIntosh and newcomer, Vincent Miller whose name you should make note of because you're going to hear a lot more from this impressive young actor. Here's the synopsis: After being transferred from juvenile to adult prison, Mel (Vincent Miller) is taken under the wing of both Mark (Cosmo Jarvis), Australia's most despised criminal, and Warren (Guy Pearce), a soon-to-be-paroled inmate. As a paternal triangle grows between them, we see that even the worst of men have a little bit of good inside that will be their undoing. Charles Williams is an acclaimed Australian film director whose short film All These Creatures won the Cannes Film Festival's Short Film Palme d'Or as well as an AACTA award here at home. Charles grew up in a remote country town in northern Victoria. Since then, his films have gone on to screen at more than 200 of the world's most prestigious festivals. He has also been selected as part of TIFF's Filmmaker Lab, The Golden Globes Filmmaker Residency and is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Inside is Charles' debut feature film. It has a discomforting psychological depth to it reminiscent of the films of Justin Kurzel like Nitram and Snowtown, and Thomas M. Wright's The Stranger. There's nothing familiar about Charles Williams' filmmaking style though. Inside feels completely unique both visually and narratively. Anyway… enjoy.

Our second London Film Festival main episode is here, and it's a bumper edition. Dario is in Falmouth visiting Neil, so it's something of a nostalgic live taping from the place where The Cinematologists started. The first film on the agenda is Alex Ross Perry's Pavements, which is a meta-documentary on a mercurial 90s band, Pavement. Neil, with his music film expertise, gives detailed context to the history and mythology of the band, whose cult status is deliberately explored by Ross Perry. It is another film that plays with multiple forms and perspectives and is also an instructive counterpoint to Soundtrack to a Coup d'etat (which we covered in the previous main show). This episode also features an interview with Australian director Justin Kurzel, who previously made the somewhat underrated version of Macbeth with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard (among an impressive ouvre). His LFF entry this year is a documentary focusing on Australian musician Warren Ellis. The film follows his career but also explores his dedication to a wildlife sanctuary in Sumatra, where rescued trafficked animals are nursed back to health. Dario then discusses the psychological drama Under the Volcano by Polish director Damian Kocur. It tells the story of a middle-class Ukrainian family finishing a holiday in Tenerife just as the war starts. It's another film that keeps the spectre of apocalypse in the background while focusing on the nuances of familial trauma and the ethical decisions they are forced to confront. Finally, Hailey and Ben join us to discuss Elton John: Never Too Late, a look back at the singer-songwriter's huge career in the context of his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium. The series is produced by Justin Kurzel, Shaun Grant and Nicole O'Donahue, under their newly established production banner Thirdborn. This is a really interesting chat with Lucy and she is very generous with her ability to unpack this series. This series is something that was born out of a real life situation but has inspired a fictitious crime drama that is quite bleak and yet beautiful at the same time. I will talk about how the project was green lighted. What parameters were given and even how they created the young voices and nuances with these characters. We will unpack the darker themes and how Lucy wants people to approach this story. Including survivors of sexual assault. There are so many great actors in this series including Alice and Essie but Lucy will talk about the bravery some of the male actors had during the shoot too. You will find out what is next for Lucy and why female driven stories will always be important to her. There is so much to unpack with Lucy.. So sit back and relax as we unpack the world of the Stan original series exposure!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Assassin's Creed wasn't supposed to be a bad movie. It was supposed to be the rare video game adaptation that got the source material right. Boasting a talented arthouse director, Justin Kurzel, and one of the most exciting leading men of the era, Michael Fassbender, this was supposed to kick off a fantasy action franchise that would put anything else based on video games to shame. Alas, it didn't work out that way, with the film being panned critically and only grossing $54 million domestically, posting a loss for 20th Century Fox from $75-100 million. The film should have been a hit as it was based on Ubisoft's wildly popular game series. So what happened? Find out about it in this episode of WTF Happened to this Movie!
