This week, we're busting out the slammer and potentially wishing we were back in it depending on who you ask, as we team up with the canary-clad copper to take down a star-studded mob in a wildly stylish and outlandishly conceived blockbuster starring a charming old man incapable of doing action scenes, that's been seemingly buried in the Disney vault in the years since. It's 1990's Dick Tracy, directed and produced by Warren Beatty, and starring Beatty, Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Charlie Korsmo, Mandy Patinkin, Dustin Hoffman, Seymour Cassel, William Forsythe, Charles Durning, Dick Van Dyke, Paul Sorvino, James Caan, Kathy Bates and Catherine O'Hara. Most of these stars are unrecognizeable under the monstrous makeup required to make them look like their vintage crime comic strip counterparts, but Pacino made enough of an impression with a wildly comedic take on his typical mobster persona that he netted an Oscar nom for Best Supporting Actor, losing to Joe Pesci for GoodFellas. While Beatty is at least a decade too old to be proper fit as the movie's lead, it's his ambition behind the camera that makes the movie such a curiosity all these years later, as the film is either an enchanting dreamscape filled with unsolvable How Did They Do That movie magic puzzles, or a steaming pile of neon-drenched puke depending on which of our two hosts you ask. But that's okay, as we have some heated disagreement this week that is maybe the closest we've yet come to vintage Siskel & Ebert kinda stuff. Plus: We've both been to the theater and are happy to sound off on Ryan Coogler's latest as JMo and Hayley both greatly enjoyed Sinners in the cinema, and Justin's got a bonus theatrical field report on Drop, the latest from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. If you'd like to watch Dick Tracy before listening along to our conversation, good luck finding a physical copy, and Disney will seemingly never stream this thing on Disney+ -- possibly for rights reasons to avoid paying anything more to Warren Beatty, or possibly because they are cowards who are ashamed of the fun movie they made. Either way, it's tough to find outside of renting it on YouTube. Other works discussed in this episode include Creed, Fruitvale Station, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, Mad Max: Fury Road, Loki, The Accountant, The Perfect Storm, Bridge of Spies, War Horse, The Adventures of Tintin, Red Eye, Trap, Reign of Fire, Surrogates, The Expendables 2, The Last Boy Scout, Princess Mononoke, Hook, This Is The Tom Green Documentary, Cutthroat Island, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, G20, The Silence of the Lambs, Longlegs, Resident Orca, Avatar: The Way of Water, Blackfish, Batman ('89), Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, X-Men, Blade, The Shadow, The Phantom, The Rocketeer, Darkman, Speed Racer, Furiosa, Challengers and Sin City, among others. We'll be back (more than likely) next week, with another special in-theaters spectacular, as 100+ episodes after we covered the original film, it is tax season once again and we're back for more Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal in The Accountant 2. So look for that next Friday, and until then we'll see you at the movies!!

Send us a textWelcome to the monumental 100th Episode of Fabulous Film and Friends where we are going to discuss the TOP 3 Comedies of ALL TIME in this podcast host's estimation. We're talking about 1984's Spinal Tap directed by Rob Reiner, starring Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, Tony Hendra, June Chadwick and Bruno Kirby then 1985's Pee Wee's Big Adventure, starring Paul Ruebens, Elizabeth Daly, Mark Holton, Jan Hooks, Diane Salinger, Morgan Fairchild and James Brolin topped off with 1987's Raising Arizona Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen starring Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, William Forsythe, Frances McDormand, Sam McMurray and Trey Wilson. I have an action-packed line up of guests starting with Kid sis and frustrated roadie Roseanne Caputi, children's book author dentist and dance king David Johnson, DMD, author, producer and gadfly George Young, musician, editor burrito and pastry lover Kendrick Wright, author, hypnotherapist, teacher and musical theater aficionado Joe Field and our very own Gordon Alex Robertson letting it all go wild.   Before we commence with the back-clapping and drinks on me at the Moulin Rouge, the synopses:  Spinal Tap (1984):A rock mockumentary following the fictional British heavy metal band Spinal Tap, chronicling their disastrous American tour after a failed album six years ago. The tour forces them to come face-to-face with their age, egos, dwindling fame, and their crumbling careers.  Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985):The madcap Pee-Wee Herman embarks on a desperate cross-country journey to find his stolen bicycle, encountering a cadre of zany characters and bizarre situations along the way.  Raising Arizona (1987):H.I. McDunnough, an ex-con with a passion for robbing convenience stores and his police officer wife, Ed short for Edwina, are unable to conceive. When unpainted furniture kingpin Nathan Arizona's wife gives birth to quintuplets, HI and Ed kidnap one of the babies, leading to a chaotic and life-changing, one might say life-affirming, series of events. Are these the greatest comedies of all time?Find out!

Tune in as Andy (Fat Dude Digs Flicks Movie Podcasts) slides back into his guest seat for a breakdown of Virtuosity, the 1995 sci-fi action thriller that sends a prisoner with a police officer background on a mission to stop a serial killer who's managed to escape his birthplace of virtual reality and is now terrorizing the real world. The investment that director Brett Leonard puts into VR through projects like Virtuosity and The Lawnmower Man, the lovably bonkers expanse of Russell Crowe's committed performance, the cheesy and dated 90s CGI in this cyberpunk landscape, and the missed opportunity to further flesh out the commentary on topics like incarcerated slave labor and police brutality stand out as a few of the subjects that this episode covers. Directed by Brett Leonard, Virtuosity stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Kelly Lynch, Stephen Spinella, William Forsythe, Louise Fletcher, William Fichtner, Costas Mandylor, Kevin J. On this special episode of THE BIG 4-0, Ron and Peter look back at the first SEVEN films from one of our childhood action heroes, Steven Seagal. ABOVE THE LAW (1988), HARD TO KILL (1990), MARKED FOR DEATH (1990), OUT FOR JUSTICE (1991), UNDER SIEGE (1992), his directorial debut ON DEADLY GROUND (1994), and his only theatrical sequel and arguably the end of his run as a major box office draw, UNDER SIEGE 2: DARK TERRITORY (1995). That's a lot of films and a lot of ground to cover, so apologies if we didn't do each film or his entire career justice. There are a lot of interesting discussion points left on the table, many touched on, but not fully explored - such as a deeper dive into his past and wild background claims (CIA and/or mob ties?), excellent/interesting supporting cast members we mention but don't trace the arc of their careers as we normally would (Sharron Stone, Pam Grier, Kelly LeBrock, William Forsythe, Jerry Orbach, Tommy lee Jones, Gary Busy, Erika Eleniak, Michael Cain, John C. McGinley, Joan Chen, Billy Bob Thornton, Eric Bogosian, Evert McGill, Morris Chestnut, and Kathrine Heigel, among others), how he always uses a .45 pistol the way Riggs and McClane always use a Baretta, his badass Bronco in MARKED FOR DEATH, the fact that he looks great - damn near hunky - at 40, no less, in UNDER SIEGE, Bassil Poledouris' awesome ON DEADLY GROUND score, and Seagal's music career (two actually-not-bad blues albums!), post-theatrical-direct-to-DVD period, TV career (A&E's LAWMAN), his fashion, political beliefs, and his legal troubles, both as an accused sexual predator and a falling-out with his producing partner Julius Nasso, which led to a real-life Seagal/mob altercation - but as a focus on just these seven films, how they've aged, and where we each rank them in his filmography, it's an in-depth, fun, and revelatory episode. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe, and we'll be back in 1984 next time to burn down the house celebrating STOP MAKING SENSE and PARIS, TEXAS's BIG 4-0s!

Step right up and watch the best performances you'll probably ever see from Eric Stoltz, William Forsythe and Wesley Snipes. Neal Jimenez wrote "Rivers Edge". He also slipped on a rock hiking, and ended up paraplegic for the rest of his life. "The Waterdance" is based on his time in rehab and is probably why the film feels like a snapshot of a handful of lives instead of some feel-good nonsense. It's pretty rad, y'all.

It's Die Hard on Alcatraz! This time on the show, Phil and Liam attempt not to explode with excitement as they discuss Michael Bay's 1996 all-star action classic THE ROCK, with special guest Bilge Ebiri! When a group of highly trained Marines led by decorated general Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) take over Alcatraz and threaten to launch VX poison gas missiles at mainland San Francisco, the government are forced to turn to two unlikely heroes: eccentric FBI chemical weapons specialist Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and enigmatic prisoner John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), the only man to have ever escape from the legendary penitentiary. Phil, Liam and Bilge discuss their memories of seeing this iconic movie upon its initial release, and their respective relationships with it over the years since. They lay out the film's numerous connections to DIE HARD in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section and dig deep on its under-discussed thematics, particularly with regards to its complex exploration of patriotism. As always, they analyze the film's heroes, Mason and Goodspeed - two highly innovative characters both played by iconic actors - and debate whether Ed Harris' General Hummel might be the greatest action movie ‘villain' of all time. They also talk about as many members of the film's astonishing supporting cast as time will allow, including the likes of David Morse, Michael Biehn, William Forsythe, Jon Spencer, Tony Todd, Claire Forlani, Vanessa Marcil, Todd Louiso, Gregory Sporleder and many more! Finally, the guys break into the ‘Die Hard Oscars' to dispense some action movie awards, and wrap things up with a particularly tricky edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! THE ROCK trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3qcNyjj9ZQAt the time of release, THE ROCK is streaming on Fubo and FXNow in the US and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, Fandango and all the usual platforms!Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

On this week's show, we begin our look at a few movies of the legendary Nicolas Cage. First up, 1996's The Rock starring Nicolas Cage, Sean Connery, Ed Harris, and William Forsythe.  From director Michael Bay, this movie is the first time Nicolas Cage steps into the role of action movie hero, and whom better to learn from than the original 007, Sean Connery. This movie big has chases, play of many varieties (namely gun and word), big action sequences, and an iconic location.  Be sure to let us know what you think of the movie, and the podcast. Thanks and enjoy!

Unclear and Present Danger

For this week's episode of the podcast, we watched Michael Bay's weirdly prescient action thriller, “The Rock,” released in 1996 and starring Sean Connery, Nicholas Cage, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn and William Forsythe. The supporting cast is also chock full of compelling character actors, including John Spencer, Philip Baker Hall, John C. McKinley, Tony Todd and Bokeem Woodbine. In “The Rock,” Ed Harris plays General Francis Hummel, a disillusioned Vietnam War vet who is angry with the American government for abandoning its soldiers to die behind enemy lines with little to no recognition or compensation. To get his revenge, and to get compensation for his men and their families, he leads his force of rogue Marines in a raid on a naval weapons depot, where they steal a stockpile of VX gas-loaded rockets. They then seize control of Alcatraz Island, off the coast of San Francisco, and hold the area hostage. Either the U.S. government pays him $100 million from a military slush fund, or he launches the rockets, killing hundreds of thousands of people. To disarm the rockets and stop Hummel, the Pentagon and the FBI organize a joint-task force of Navy Seals, special agents and a former convict at Alcatraz. Nic Cage plays FBI agent Stanley Goodspeed, a chemical weapons expert asked with identifying and disarming the weapons. Sean Connery plays John Patrick Mason, a former MI6 officer and current maximum security inmate who was the only person to successfully escape from Alcatraz. The FBI has brought Mason out of prison to aid the mission. The team successfully infiltrates Alcatraz, but then the plan falls apart. The Seals are killed, and Goodspeed and Mason are left trapped in Alcatraz. Their only hope of escape, and survival, is to complete the mission before an airstrike — ordered as a last resort — destroys the island and everyone on it.The tagline for “The Rock” was “Alcatraz. Only one man has ever broken out. Now five million lives depend on two men breaking in.”You can find “The Rock” to rent or buy on demand on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode will be on the 1995 film “Hackers.”Connor Lynch produced this episode. Calling Dick Tracy, calling Dick Tracy! Big Boy is on prowl and can't no copper 'cept you bring him down! This week on The CineMeh Podcast, Josh and Ryan take on the underworld next to the banana raincoat and fedora hero of the early 30s in the 1990 fever dream classic, Dick Tracy. With a cast of mob movie heavies and Warren Beaty at the helm, plus a stunning, unique visual style, this film has all the makings of a modern arthouse classic. Instead, it ends up being such a bland, mid film that it is difficult even to form an opinion about why it is so unremarkable! It's a film that just exists, despite having everything going for it. A perfect example of, unfortunately, extraordinarily wasted potential. Our discussion goes into other film noir heroes of the era, including a call back to The Shadow in season 2, and a near constant invocation of Batman. Plus, if you like James Cagney and Edward Robinson, you'll be excited to hear them invoked with mention of vastly superior films like The Public Enemy and Little Caeser. Strap on your talkie watch and load up your tommy gun, this one is a doozie. Dick Tracy was released in 1990 and stars Warren Beaty, Al Pacino, and Madonna, with appearances by William Forsythe, James Caan, James Tolkan and Dustin Hoffman.
