Often, risk and reward collide. Corporate giants and high-stakes gamblers unknowingly walk parallel paths. Their worlds may seem separate to outsiders, although fate has a way of intertwining their destinies. Both are driven by ambition, chasing triumph. But as their desires for success grow, a hidden truth begins to reveal itself. LLMs, like the roll of Snake Eyes in a dice game, hold the power to shape kismet and shatter dreams. The line between success and ruin is as fragile as the edge of a dice. As corporate entities collide with the ultimate risktakers, a new game emerges.Allen Woods served as a soldier in the British Army, primarily with Infantry battalions. In the same way that these locations have the potential to become booming communities, MORTAR believes that the neighborhood's residents have the potential to create booming enterprises – just footsteps from their homes. MORTAR fulfills its purpose by building on these successes through focusing on those who are often ignored. By targeting underserved and redeveloping communities, Mortar offers these non-traditional entrepreneurs the opportunity to use their inherent talents to not just make a dollar, but to positively participate in the rise of Cincinnati. In this episode, Alex sat down with Allen Woods, the Co-founder and Executive Director of MORTAR, to discuss the growth and evolution of the organization, the advantages of localization when it comes to entrepreneurial support, and Allen’s own entrepreneurial journey.

I’m back with a Very Special Episode (no, not the one where Jessie is addicted to caffeine pills) of the Creative City podcast. This time, I took my portable studio - aka laptop and mic - on location to MORTAR’s Life’s a Pitch event, where I talked to four of the program’s recent graduates about their businesses and future aspirations. Since the venue was a bar, I set up shop on the “quiet” back patio, only to be thwarted by a monsoon that decided to roll through anytime I hit record. Can you say background noise? The event was great, though, and I managed to catch up with a few of the talented folks rounding out the Spring graduating class: Rebecca Denney of Paleolicious Cincy - Catering locally produced, organic food that tastes great. paleoliciouscincy.com Katy Dietz of Green Man Twist - Soft serve ice cream with a community focus, based in Walnut Hills. facebook.com/Greenmantwist Stephanie Bohanon of Beaux Studios - A concept salon that’s combines a beauty salon, retail space, and events venue. instagram.com/beauxstudio.oh Rolandis Williams of iCleanology - Specialty cleaning services for the restaurant industry (apologies--the first part of our interview got cut off). www.icleanology.com, coming soon To learn more about MORTAR’s commitment to building communities through entrepreneurship, check out my chat with Allen Woods in episode 8 at www.creativecitypodcast.com. In the "olde" days all small businesses were brick and mortar and generally lined the main streets of every town and city in the USA. You could see how well an area was doing by seeing how many stores were opened and what kind of stores they were. Four pawn shops and a liquor drive-thru? Not so good. But two restaurants, a bike shop and a florist - that's a good sign. Derrick Braziel and Allen Woods of Mortar have taken an idea and a passion to help build communities through entrepreneurship. Derek Tye co-hosts this fun and inspiring interview. Tune in.
