Hello plant people and welcome back to Herbal Radio! This week will be the second and final episode of our 2-part series featuring the four esteemed organizations that were the recipients of the 2023 Grants 4 Plants Program. For those unfamiliar with Grants 4 Plants, Mountain Rose Herbs created the grant program back in 2018 to support nonprofits, small businesses, and home herbalists who are working towards making this planet a better place. Since its inception, we've proudly been able to fund many invaluable initiatives leading towards organic and sustainable agriculture, herbal education, protection of native and medicinal plants, and environmental stewardship. This week, we are featuring the Therapeutic Farm Assistant and the SUD Counselor of Carl E. Dahl House Community Garden, Breanna Murphy and Kelsey Cass, as well as the Founder of Cincinnati Birth Center | Safer Birth Foundation, Meghan Nowland. We hope each of you listening in today will be inspired by the commendable work these organizations are providing for their communities and beyond. Please be sure to check out the links included below to find out how you can support these invaluable initiatives. We'll see you next week when we hear from the other two organizations that won the 2023 Grants 4 Plants program. For now, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure! Learn more about these organizations and the hard-working faces behind them: Carl E. Dahl House at Evergreen Grove is a residential treatment facility for me with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Unlike traditional treatment facilities, the Carl E. Dahl house used a farm care modality as part of the resident's treatment plans. Working in the gardens and with our rescue animals allows for traditional treatment barriers to be dropped allowing for a more natural approach to self-healing and care. GAAMHA, the parent company of the Carl E. Dahl House, works to create a world where people can get help when they ask for it, no matter who they are. The gardening program allows for our residents to be hands on with nature. The clinical benefits of being able to say they took ownership of garden bed, planted, watered, weeded and cared for the growing plants that eventually will produce foods that naturally heal the body are priceless and cannot be duplicated in a traditional office style treatment model. Breanna Murphy helps manage the day-to-day operations of the animal care part of the program at the Carl E. Dahl House, where they have over 60 animals, many of which are rescues or special needs. Breanna has been working with Kelsey for two years to get the garden project to where it is today. She has her Bachelor's in Sustainable Food and Farming, is a certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor, and has completed 3 herbal apprenticeships. Breanna and her husband have a small homestead and permaculture nursery called Singing Kettle Botanicals, where they focus on perennial food sources and medicinal herbs hardy to zone 5. Kelsey Cass is the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor at the Carl E Dahl House, and is in recovery herself. Kelsey and Breanna have been working together to implement the garden project as part of their clinical curriculum and therapeutic farming. Kelsey has her Bachelor's in Human Development and Family Studies, is a certified yoga instructor, and certified in permaculture design. She first became connected with GAAMHA and the farm when she started teaching yoga at the farms pilot program a couple of towns over, and volunteered with the clients doing gardening and various nature related activities. “It's been an absolute blessing to work here where I can share all my passions and interests, while helping others, and with the most amazing team of people.” – Kelsey Learn more about Carl E. Buckle up, friends, because we're hitting the road on a Southern food odyssey that's as rich in flavor as it is in culture! Starting in the historic heart of Vicksburg, Mississippi, we don't just feed our stomachs at Walnut Hills; we feast on tales of the town and its people. Each forkful of their mouth-watering fried chicken and purple hull peas is a bite of the South's soul, and trust us, their cakes and pepper sauce are the stuff of legends. Our journey doesn't stop there – we venture down to Louisiana, where the cuisine is as vibrant as the jazz that fills the air. At Al Basha, we're talking Greek-Lebanese fare that'll make your heart sing as loudly as the flavors dance on your tongue. Then, it's only fair we pay homage to the iconic Louisiana po'boy at Old Time Grocery, where local bread reigns supreme and is best enjoyed with a cold regional root beer. Our adventure takes a smoky turn in Austin, Texas, the mecca of barbecue aficionados. Here, we'll share how we got caught up in the electric atmosphere of the city, from laid-back Zilker Park to the bustling avenues of South Congress. The real star of the show? The Salt Lick BBQ, where the brisket and ribs are a smoldering testament to Texas' barbecue prowess. We're not just about the meats, though; our visit to H Mart proves we're suckers for the rich tapestry of international flavors that Austin has to offer. Now, if you're itching to get a behind-the-scenes peek at our food escapades, join our YouTube family where we've been whipping up some kitchen magic. Undefeated Winton Woods (5-0) plays at Anderson (4-1) in a key Eastern Cincinnati Conference football showdown this Friday. "It's been a pretty competitive series over the years," Winton Woods coach Chad Murphy said. "From the FAVC (Fort Ancient Valley Conference) days to the ECC days now. We know they're a throw it around, score a lot of points team. We've battled with them the last couple years so we couldn't be more excited." Winton Woods is No. 1 in the Division II, Region 8 computer points standings, according to Joe Eitel, while Anderson is No. 2. Murphy and senior defensive lineman Cam Jackson joined the WCPO High School Insider Podcast to discuss this season and the upcoming game against the Raptors. Anderson defeated Walnut Hills 51-0 last week. That victory came a week after the Raptors lost 56-35 at Milford. Anderson coach Evan Dreyer said the Raptors hope that experience against Milford will help this week against Winton Woods. "We can't give Winton Woods a short field or a big play," Dreyer said. Anderson junior quarterback Justice Burnam has thrown for a conference-best 1,543 yards and 16 touchdowns. Anderson senior Brodey Berg has rushed for 460 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also has 384 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Trace Jallick has 380 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Anderson will face a Winton Woods defense which has allowed just four points per game and 20 points overall this season. "Their defense is incredible," Dreyer said. Winton Woods has an 18-game regular season win streak. Its most recent regular-season loss came at Anderson Oct. 1, 2021 (28-21). Jackson said he remembers what it was like to lose at Anderson during the 2021 game. He said it was a turning point in the state championship journey. "It was quiet in the locker room," Jackson said. "There weren't a lot of laughs and giggles. it wasn't a good feeling at all. That's all I remember." Winton Woods, which defeated Little Miami 51-0 last week, is led by several players including junior linebacker Justin Hill who has a conference-best 6 1/2 sacks. Jackson has four sacks while junior defensive back Donmiel Rogers Jr. has three interceptions. Junior running back Tyler Gooding has rushed for 488 yards and six touchdowns. Andy Farfsing is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Purcell Marian High School, located in the Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati. He and his team have led a transformative turnaround of this historic inner-city Catholic High School that counts business leaders, community leaders, and professional athletes among the list of famous alumni - including Dallas Cowboys NFL star, business leader, and philanthropist Roger Staubach. Andy has spent his entire career in Catholic secondary education; 10 years as a teacher and then 10 years as a principal. As a proud Purcell Marian alumnus (Class of 1995) he passionately believes that Marianist education is not only important to our students but to the human spirit. “Through Marianist education, we are helping our students discover their God-given talents and creating the next generation of justice seekers, servant leaders, and peacekeepers who can adapt to changing world.” He says that being at Purcell Marian feels like the “family business” to him and has little time for hobbies, choosing to put his energy into all things Purcell Marian, instead. He has been married to his wife, Lindsay (also a PM '95 graduate and staff member) for 17 years and has two children, Olivia and Rachel. The Farfsings love to travel in their RV and discover a beautiful country. Andy's favorite place they've visited so far is Kennebunkport, Maine.

On this episode, we joined the Gorilla Cinema power team of Jacob Trevino & Otto Baum at the beautiful Overlook Lodge in Pleasant Ridge, Ohio. If you're unfamiliar w/ these two creative geniuses, you're probably hip to their amazing & unique bars & restaurant as they are the minds behind Tiki Tiki Bang Bang in Walnut Hills (formerly The Video Archive), The Lonely Pine Steak House in Pleasant Ridge, Tokyo Kitty downtown, La Ofrenda in OTR, & the OG venue of The Overlook Lodge, which is where this podcast was recorded. These two hustlers joined forces to make, what I consider, one of the most powerful partnerships in the Nati. This is the first time I've ever recorded partners like this, in terms of them both being separate entrepreneurs successful in their own lanes...who didn't even know each other...met...believed in the other's abilities & vision…& teamed up to become a thriving partnership. I've been following both of these guys for quite a while & they have consistently blown me away w/ what they've come up w/ over the years. Their spaces are always so creative, well thought out, unique, the attention to detail is impeccable, & they really DO take you to another place for an experience you won't forget. I appreciate them as a patron, I respect them as a hustler, & I admire them as Cincinnatian who loves his city. The takeaway is easy on this one & is right in line w/ what I'm trying to do w/ this podcast. It's two-fold too. The first is that they're telling stories. Jacob has elaborate visions of venues that tell a story. That story is one of the most important parts of what is ultimately created too. The second is that they are supporting local. Otto has an amazing ability to create physical spaces that match Jacob's vision but he also has pride in the workmanship he puts into them because he loves the areas they are investing in & he is well-aware of the positive impact he is having on those communities. I record this podcast to hear & record people's stories & to support local businesses, so this was a great duo to have on as guests. I genuinely encourage you to make it a point to support these guys. Podcast Production: John Bl@zeTheme Music: "Farmers Name" by Highly LikelySponsor Music: "Grow" by Cory Christopher Beats

Listeners, I am so excited to share with you, a good family friend, Alex Meachum. Alex is Basketball, specifically UC connoisseur, author of #6 Cincinnati Bestseller Novel Walk of a Lifetime, host of The Bearcat Basketball Podcast, Guest on the Blitz, Creator of Shining Star AAU Team, and a retired UC Basketball player. Alex's career and professional achievements resemble much of a snowball effect, beginning with a very out of the ordinary high school basketball experience. Alex found himself never finishing an entire season in high school, however with dedication he ended up at UC playing with and under the greats. With some profound professors throughout his college education, Alex was encouraged by one to write his best-selling novel, Walk of a Lifetime. With a coaching career at Walnut Hills, his life snowballed from there into the creation of Shining Star AAU Team where he could have both a personal and coaching experience on and off the court with his players. At the end of the day, Alex hopes to leave a legacy with a lasting impact of helping our community whether that be on the Fatherhood Committee at Talbert House or his relationships he fosters on and off the court. He has already begun to mark this legacy with the extraordinary accomplishments illustrated in this podcast. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everyday-badass/support

MaCio Teague has gained valuable insight into the NBA Draft process this spring. The Baylor University redshirt junior guard and 2015 Walnut Hills graduate declared for the draft March 30 and told WCPO this week he is very close to hiring an NCAA certified agent. He's interviewed with several NBA teams as those organizations gather information about draft prospects. "Nothing has really surprised me," Teague said. "They just ask normal questions. They try to get your family background, just try to figure out your path and how you got to the point where you are today." Teague, known as an excellent shooter, joined the WCPO High School Insider to discuss his memorable season at Baylor (26-4) where averaged 13.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists for the No. 5 nationally-ranked Bears. He shot 35.5 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Teague also reflected on the NBA Draft process and his favorite memories of playing high school basketball at Walnut Hills. "He's real blessed and he's just going through the process," Walnut Hills coach Ricardo Hill said. "Several NBA teams have interviewed him and for him to get that experience - it's huge. I think he's a pro. Whether it happens this year or next year or whenever." Hill stays connected with Teague and gives the former Walnut Hills standout honest feedback after games. Teague appreciates the fact that Hill believed in him. "A lot of what you see today goes out to Coach Ricardo," Teague said. "Without Coach Ricardo there would be no MaCio Teague. He definitely means a lot to me." Hill said he is proud of Teague's performances on the court but also the fact that the basketball standout graduated this spring with an education degree. "He's the guy that cares about this city," Hill said. "He cares about representing Cincinnati. And his family does. There is no better person to do it. He's not going to be the one that is going to be in trouble or doing silly things out there. I'm just excited for his future." The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 25 although ESPN reported it will likely be pushed back because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Democrats could have an open seat on Cincinnati City Council soon, with the possibility of Tamaya Dennard either resigning or being removed from office amid legal troubles. Who could be in line to fill the seat? Cincinnati.com City Hall reporter Sharon Coolidge and political columnist Jason Williams broke down potential candidates on their That's So Cincinnati podcast this week. Here are some of the potential candidates they talked about: Ryan DuPree: She's executive director of Walnut Hills-based Christ Emmanuel Christian Fellowship, where her parents – Bishop Michael Dantley and Pastor Carol Dantley – have led the congregation for decades. Bishop Dantley has been a supporter of Mayor John Cranley, who once attempted to hire Dupree to work on the mayor's staff. Dupree has never run for public office before, but she is widely liked by establishment and progressive Democrats. She sits on the board of the Community Action Agency, and her work and relationships have helped her gain a strong understanding of city issues. Dupree would bring a fresh perspective to City Hall, and there's a good chance she'd be the front-runner for the seat. Lesley Jones: The Mount Airy pastor is one of the city's leaders fighting for racial healing. Jones was an endorsed Democrat in the 2017 council race, her first attempt at political office. She finished 12th in a field race where the top nine win a seat. Alicia Reece: The one-time Cincinnati vice mayor and state lawmaker is currently running for Todd Portune's former seat on the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners. That blockbuster local primary between the Roselanwn resident and former state lawmaker Connie Pillich is a toss-up, and Reece's strong base of city Democratic support could lift her to victory. But if she loses, Reece will likely have party leaders pushing for her to get the seat. Sedrick Denson: The former City Hall aide to Councilman Wendell Young, Denson is in his first term as a state representative. He lives in Springfield Township, so he would have to move back into the city. Ozie Davis: The popular Avondale resident is well known in city politics. He recently sat on the Cincinnati Public Schools board, but lost his bid to keep the seat as a write-in candidate last fall. Davis was an endorsed Democrat for council in 2017, when he finished 11th in his first political race. Also on this week's episode: SORTA board member and Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber executive Brendon Cull talks in-depth about the Issue 7 transportation levy that'll be on the March ballot in Hamilton County.

I’m back with a Very Special Episode (no, not the one where Jessie is addicted to caffeine pills) of the Creative City podcast. This time, I took my portable studio - aka laptop and mic - on location to MORTAR’s Life’s a Pitch event, where I talked to four of the program’s recent graduates about their businesses and future aspirations. Since the venue was a bar, I set up shop on the “quiet” back patio, only to be thwarted by a monsoon that decided to roll through anytime I hit record. Can you say background noise? The event was great, though, and I managed to catch up with a few of the talented folks rounding out the Spring graduating class: Rebecca Denney of Paleolicious Cincy - Catering locally produced, organic food that tastes great. paleoliciouscincy.com Katy Dietz of Green Man Twist - Soft serve ice cream with a community focus, based in Walnut Hills. facebook.com/Greenmantwist Stephanie Bohanon of Beaux Studios - A concept salon that’s combines a beauty salon, retail space, and events venue. instagram.com/beauxstudio.oh Rolandis Williams of iCleanology - Specialty cleaning services for the restaurant industry (apologies--the first part of our interview got cut off). www.icleanology.com, coming soon To learn more about MORTAR’s commitment to building communities through entrepreneurship, check out my chat with Allen Woods in episode 8 at www.creativecitypodcast.com.
