Let's talk about the importance of expanding from our foundations Leftover from yesterday, consider that your experiences not only help you uses the tools in your box, they equip you to use more tools. Consider a barber or hairstylist who is giving you a trim. They pull out many different tools to cut and style your hair, versus getting your hair cut my Uncle Bob or Aunt Millie, with scissors or a razor that likely need some sharpening. Or consider an artist, who uses many brushes, other tools and mixes paint colors to create a masterpiece. It is a far cry from the 8 box crayon set! And so it is with our experiences, we start off learning to manage the basics and advance to operating where more complexities exists and more critical thought and creativity is advantageous. Let's talk about the importance of what's outside the box, expanding from our foundations. When we know the basics of what is inside of our box and what is expected of us, we have the capacity to go beyond the basics. We can use our depth of understanding to propel us forward. It is great to follow the guidance and the rules, however, at some point one must move forward to uncharted courses to make advances and new discoveries. When going outside of the box, the box still remains a constant reference point. There is much to be discovered for our benefit beyond what is currently known. I've told the story before about the newlywed who cut off the end of the roast before cooking it. She had seen her mother and grandmother do the same thing and she assumed this was a necessary step. However, when they asked the grandmother why she cut the roast, they learned it was because her pan was too small to fit the roast. The newlywed and her mom had pans and ovens big enough to fit the whole roast. This is a reminder that the old way of doing things, while it might work, is not necessarily the best way for the current circumstances. We must understand our resources and apply our learning and creativity in a way that effectively progresses us forward and constantly considers our current circumstances. When we ensure we are knowledgeable about the impact of current circumstances, we can make choices and take action that is beneficial and relevant for the current situation and expected future situations. Be willing to think outside of the box and implement. Remember, that each of us has a unique set of lived experiences that can help positively contribute to our situation. Devin: What is your superpower?Eric: My real superpower is that I can spot patterns.“Tragically beautiful” is how one person described Eric Hatch's “Glaciers in Retreat” artistic photography show now touring the country. The images above are a sample of the beautiful but tragic images that document shrinking glaciers.Eric is also the author of an entertaining new memoir, You Wouldn't Believe It Anyhow.AI Podcast Summary* The guest on the show is Eric Hatch, a photographer and environmental activist.* Eric has documented glaciers in retreat through his photography and is currently on a nationwide tour with his show.* He hopes to inspire action on climate change through his artistic photos that evoke an emotional response.* Eric discusses his process of accessing glaciers, either by hiking or flying over them.* The next showing of his photography show will be in Hanover, New Hampshire, followed by the Evendale Ohio Cultural Center.* Eric also has a memoir titled You Wouldn't Believe It Anyhow, which shares stories from his rich and complicated life.* He talks about a story in the book where his mother shared a secret with him about his birth, which he didn't find particularly profound.* Eric's superpower is his ability to spot patterns quickly, which allows him to anticipate trends and make predictions.* He offers tips for improving composition in photography, such as looking for angles and curves and considering the entire frame.* Eric's glacier photos can be found on glaciersinretreat.com, and his memoir can be purchased on Amazon.com.How to Develop Seeing Patterns As a SuperpowerEric sees his ability to shoot a photo as both literal and metaphorical evidence of his ability to see patterns as a superpower.“As a photographer, I'm not restricted to doing glaciers and glacial melt,” he says. “What I try to do with my pictures is recreate the feeling that I had when I saw the scene. And my eyesight is absolutely terrible. Look at these things,” he says, holding his glasses. “You can tell they're goggles. Which means that I see patterns and shapes much better than I see detail.”Eric offers some advice for seeing patterns in photography.“What you look for is angles and curves,” he says. “What you don't want is straight lines. You don't want stuff that's bullseye composition, dead center in the frame. There are some old-fashioned rules, like the rule of thirds, that are helpful. Not everything has to be composed that way. But it's a good starting point.”Of course, the rule of thirds is to divide your frame like a tic-tac-toe square so you can put the subject at one of the four intersections.“The other advice I would give would be to look at the entire frame and look at the background because what you don't want is to have a tree growing out of Aunt Millie's forehead,” Eric says. “Because we are trained, we look at what's important to us. The camera doesn't; the camera sees what's there, period. Full stop. So what you have to do is try as a photographer to see the way the camera sees. Look at the whole frame.”Take a moment to consider the advice metaphorically, too. Consider seeing the patterns in your life that aren't straight lines and the full context in which we live. If you do so, you may be able to make seeing patterns a skill that could become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileEric K. As the old saying goes: where there's a Will, there's a way...to end up in jail? In book five of the Kit series, our hero wants nothing more than to hit the road. After meeting Will, a self-described hobo traveling the country, Kit longs for adventure and a break from chores. Kit gets more than she bargained for, however, when she hops a train and only gets as far as the local jail. We discuss Kit's anti-carceral state activism, the hobo code of conduct, and the durability of Saves the Day tropes. Fans of Love is Blind will want to tune in for our review of season three of the series; fans of Kit's Aunt Millie should also be sure to give this one a listen, just because she said so. Advent is, if nothing else, a season of hope. We hope that Santa brings us what we want for Christmas. We hope that Uncle Tony breaks out a bottle of the good stuff on Christmas Eve and then loses the cap. We hope that Aunt Millie has lost the recipe to her infamous tuna and jell-o casserole (spoiler alert: she hasn't). And there's something about a child savior in there, as well. This year, we can all hope that life can get back to something resembling normal sometime soon (and a guilt-free normal at that). In the spirit of good hope, join Dizzy & Ges for a cup of cheer a wander through the many things we wish we could do, hope to someday do, and can't wait to get back to in the land of Christmas traditions in Episode 94 - The Advent Bucket List!

In today's episode, I talk with Nathaniel Crawford who is a Chicago-based commercial food, portrait & lifestyle photographer, learned home baker, and a person who stutters. He has worked with numerous brands like Aberlour Scotch Whiskey, Aunt Millie's Bread, and Godiva Chocolate!I started following Nathaniel on Instagram last year, finding his food photos engaging and evocative. We began talking regularly in the DMs about photography and marketing as they relate to the food and beverage industries and our conversations were so good that I knew I had to have him on the podcast! In fact, we had so much fun talking that the original recorded conversation was about 3 hours long! I trimmed it down as best as I could to 1 hour but it is clear that I'm going to need to have Nathaniel back on the podcast soon.Connect with Nathaniel:Instagram: @capturesbytkcoWebsite: https://www.capturesbytk.com/__Connect with HeatherInstagram: @craftandclusterWebsite: https://www.craftandcluster.com/Disclaimer: The information contained on this podcast and the resources available for download through the accompanying website are for educational and informational purposes only. We are rereleasing this episode as we prepare for our January Mini-Series. We love a clean slate and is there any cleaner of a slate than January 1? The whole year is stretched out before us, full of possibility and good intentions. So naturally everyone and their Aunt Millie is currently setting goals and thinking about how they want to show up in the world this year. Here at Mom Wants More we have some suggestions on how you can practice this gently with yourself. We are all about naming those things we hope for, for calling our shot, and then getting after it. But it can quickly turn into pressure, an "on or off" mentality, or even feeling like a failure by January 11. In today's episode we're highlighting the difference between setting a hard Goal and setting an Intention. We think that when it comes to intentions and mindfulness, the more the merrier, but when it comes to hard goals, less is actually more. We're sharing how this looks in our personal lives and we're offering up some practical and helpful ideas of how you can approach this exercise in your own life. Listen in! And we'd love to hear some of YOUR New Year's goals or intentions! Leave a comment, email us, or send us a private message! We'll show you ours if you show us yours! Thanks for being such a rad community- for tuning in, following along, sharing the podcast with your people, and for basically being the best listeners ever!
