Australia correspondent Peter Ryan speaks to Susana Lei'ataua about evidence showing the life for indigenous people in Australia is slowly improving but the key problems of imprisonment and life expectancy are getting worse.
Mr Zkharya recalls his time working at the oil refinery in Khanaqin in the Dyala provence established in 1931. He and his son were wrongfully accused of being British spies, leading to a trial that ultimately resulted in their release. He also reflects on the deep love and strong bond he shared with his wife until her passing in the 1990s. Eventually, Mr. Zkharya made the decision to leave Iraq for good and settle in Kuwait.
We continue with the story of Mr Zahkaria's legacy. He reminisces about the tales his father shared regarding the history of their ancestral village, Mar Bisho, located in the Hakkari Mountains south of Turkey. He recounts how his father explained the origin of the village's name and shares some eyewitness accounts of the assassination of Patriarch Mar Benyamin Shomoun.

Episode 31! Enjoy this fantastic, fun and honest conversation with UK born, now Springbrook based, Jemma Purandare. Jemma is a wonderfully bubbly and engaging woman and shares with us how she's training for a dream race - CCC, as part of the UTMB festival, while also holding down a full time job as an Environmental Scientist; studying International Law and since that's not enough for one busy human (!) - working on a PhD looking at climate change and its influence on river estuaries on the Gold Coast. We hear about Jemma's background, growing up in the UK, studying Landscape Architecture (before two Masters programs to refocus on her interest in Environmental Science) at Edinburgh University and first coming to Australia to study, before relocating here full-time in 2011. From a sporting perspective, Jemma shares how she mainly played netball in school and started running as a means to meet people outside of work, how this turned into racing triathlon, all the way into the full IRONMAN distance in 2016. Recognising her ability for endurance, Jemma began to focus on trail running, as part of the inaugural Mountain Goat running crew in Brisbane. Jemma shares with us her preparation for CCC (100km and over 6000m of vert!); her experience of goal setting and qualifying for the race; an endemetriosis diagnosis and experience of fatigue, which led her to focus more on her health and nutrition and her experience as a woman in sport and science. Jemma was also mentioned in our last podcast episode as she travelled to the USA to crew for Meagan Brown at Western States Endurance Run - listen back to Episode 30 for more on that one! As Meagan shared with us in some of our pre-episode "research" work, Jemma is "one of the most kind, supportive, caring people you'll meet who will leave this Earth in a better place" and it was a pleasure to elevate her voice in this episode. You can find Jemma on Instagram at @littlegoatjem If you are keen to help keep the lights on for this podcast, you can support us on Patreon, or you can leave a review on whatever platform you listen to podcasts on like Apple or Spotify.Thank you for the continued support from all of our listeners and patrons - we love and appreciate you all!
Laura Turner's guest is Matthew Evans from Fat Pig Farm. Matthew is a farmer and writer who now calls Tasmania home. But if we'd met him a few years ago he may well have been living the high life on the mainland as a chef turned high-profile restaurant critic. He traded city life and suits for gumboots and country living – documenting his tree change on his hit SBS show The Gourmet Farmer. He's just released his 13th book Soil – the incredible story of what keeps the earth, and us, healthy. Laura Turner chats with Jenny Valentish. Our guest this week was destined it seems to be a journalist and writer, after all there's not many 7 year olds creating their own newspapers. By the age of 16 she was self-publishing which soon led to her first ‘official' column. She survived her time working in the music industry and in 2006 came to Australia where she firmly established her credentials as a sought after editor, journalist and writer. She's just published her fourth book called Everything Harder than Everyone Else – why some of us push our bodies to extremes – a fascinating insight into the psyche of high achievers and people who go to extremes. For more information head to www.jennyvalentish.com HERE.
