VicNoTill farmers were rapt to welcome food writer, farmer, television broadcaster and chef Matthew Evans to the Food for Thought Conference in Wagga Wagga. After Matthew walked around the paddocks, stood in a soil pit and sampled the beef grown on the cattle stud of VicNoTill's Michael Gooden, they sat down to talk about the links between healthy soils, food and people. Matthew shares how he went from a city boy who was always hungry to a reluctant celebrity who uses his fame to ‘bang on about healthy soils'. His purpose is to spread a deeper appreciation of the broader health impacts when people values farmers like those in VicNoTill who are changing their farming systems and improving their soils to grow more nutrient-rich foods. Based in Southern Tasmania, Matthew lives and works on Fat Pig Farm, a mixed holding where he tends a garden, makes cider, fattens the namesake pigs and tries to entice milk from two full cream dairy cows for his onsite restaurant. Matthew's personal farming journey has been the focus of six series of Gourmet Farmer on SBS, and he's presented two documentaries, For The Love of Meat, and What's The Catch. Matthew is the author of 15 books on food, including the authoritative ethical meat manifesto On Eating Meat. He's an advocate for open, fair, accountable food and farming systems, and has pushed for honest labelling so we can all enjoy sustainable seafood. His book SOIL is a hymn to the remarkable, and underappreciated bit of Earth that gifts us life. It's a swashbuckling tale of soil that arms us all with the knowledge and respect to care about its health, the perfect complement to his latest completely revised cookbook The Real Food Companion. His most recent book, MILK, came out in July 2024 and unpacks the truth and lies behind the original superfood.

MILK…despite the fact that 6 billion people on the planet drink it and we have been for 10,00 years, most of us rarely give it a moments thought. Todays conversation with Matthew Evans takes us swimming in vats of the stuff.Milk looms large in our culture and it's complex, layered, nutritionally interesting and culturally rich. Milk doesn't just feed us - it affects the very way our DNA behaves, feeds your microbiome, speaks to brain health, beneficial to heart health. Fascinatingly, there's a two way communication between a mother and her baby which is passed through the milk.Far from innocuous milk is in fact an extraordinarily complex social, political, ethical, environmental, scientific and fashionable elixir. Chef-turn-broadcasters-turn-farmers are super passionate about bringing the connection to eaters about where their food comes from, but there's a unique skill in going down a wormhole on the topic of soil and communicating the benefits of it in a way that everyday people can understand. Matthew Evans, renowned in Australia for his TV series 'Gourmet Farmer', was a chef by trade and then a restaurant reviewer for the likes of the Sydney Morning Herald before heading to their own farm in Tasmanian to grow their own to find out why certain food tastes better. He persisted when his publisher was unsure of his desire to not write yet another cookbook, but a hymn to the soil. His research for the book explains how healthy soil is connected to our human physiology's ability to instinctively know what food is more nutrient-dense, as it's naturally more flavoursome. Sarah & Matthew catch up at a recent event at Greystone Wines to discuss how close technology is a way for consumers to be able to do the same thing through an app on their phone. Matthew explains this will be a game-changer for food purchasing based on what's both more pleasurable to eat and healthier. In the Western World, it seems far too easy to blame our challenges on the forces of a modern "Communism", or conversely, a "neo-fascism". Further, politics lead us to push back against any system that threatens "socialist" policies. But are we being naive with this labelling? Is it possible these are all red herrings, diverting us from the real threat of "totalitarianism"?Dr. Matthew Evans-Cockle and Tessa Lena join us to attempt to wade through some misconceptions and refine our understanding of these movements from a historical context.Matthew Evans-Cockle: https://canadiancovidcarealliance.org Tessa Lena: https://tessafightsrobots.comSubscribe to Rounding the Earth on Substack: https://roundingtheearth.substack.com/Support us by checking out our sponsor page: https://roundingtheearth.substack.com/p/rounding-the-earth-sponsors-and-partnersFollow us on all our platforms: Rumble: https://rumble.com/c/c-1718605Odysee: https://odysee.com/@RoundingtheEarth:8YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp2V_2S02t-F69FZdFRlMXwRokfin: https://rokfin.com/RoundingtheEarthBitChute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/roundingtheearth/Brighteon: https://www.brighteon.com/channels/roundingtheearthTwitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/RoundEarthClub/Visit the Campfire Wiki: https://www.campfire.wiki/

Matthew Evans is a chef, farmer, host of the popular TV series Gourmet Farmer, and most recently the author of ‘Soil: The incredible story of what keeps the earth, and us, healthy.' And what an incredible story. Prepare for perhaps the most mind-blowing hour on this podcast (and that feels like it's saying something). Matthew's framed it as a story of bombs, of civilisations falling, of gods and pestilence, and redemption. Author and journalist Gabrielle Chan wrote, ‘This book is an urgent and passionate plea to take soil seriously, not just for farmers, gardeners and cooks, but for anyone who eats.' In fact, Matthew was partly motivated to write this book due to the polarisation around the topic of his last book, On Eating Meat. Perhaps the topic of soil could be more universalising. And of course, it needs to be. I do feel this personally, too, as Matthew's research affirms our growing understanding of soil (and our treatment of it) as being at the heart of our mental, physical and even spiritual health – in profound ways. Due to Covid, and living over the other side of the country in Tasmania, Matthew had become something of a digital friend. So we resolved to wait to talk about this book till we could do it in person. And you'll hear that we weren't the only creatures celebrating that during our conversation. As often happens, the timing ended up perfect, allowing us to weave in some of the key happenings in the world right now. Like many of the world's most celebrated creatives, Michelle Crawford wholeheartedly embraces the unpredictable adventures that taking risks can bring. With no jobs and only a credit card to keep them afloat, Michelle, husband Leo and their then infant daughter Elsa moved to Tasmania in 2004, in search of a simpler life more connected to the land. After going on to welcome a son, in 2007 Michelle started a blog named after her two kids, Hugo and Elsa, aimed at documenting her new life in the countryside, which would ultimately go on to attract a significant community of followers. Once her kids were at school, Michelle was free to pursue an array of creative and culinary-focused interests, leading to a host of collaborations with some of Tassie's most acclaimed chefs and food critics including Matthew Evans, Sally Wise and Ben Milbourne. During this time she also established herself as one of the country's leading voices on all things food, authoring four books and numerous articles featured in the likes of Country Style, Galah, Graziher, Jetstar Magazine, Feast Magazine, Inside Out and Lunch Lady Magazine. More recently, she has started the process of gently restoring an old bank known as 'The Bowmont' in the idyllic village of Franklin in Tasmania's Huon Valley, which she and Leo bought a few years ago. True to form, she has many grand plans for this history-filled building and I was thrilled to be able to catch up with her about them - and so much more - a few weeks ago.

techUK is the trade association that brings together people, companies, and organisations to realise the positive outcomes of what digital technology can achieve. With over 850 members (the majority of which are SMEs) across the UK, techUK creates a network for innovation and collaboration across business, government, and stakeholders to provide a better future for people, society, the economy, and the planet. Matthew Evans, Director for Markets, techUK, joins me on Tech Talks Daily in a conversation about why digital transformation is critical to the decarbonisation journey of organisations in every sector. I learn more about how industries are converging across supply chains and sectors with tech partners to find innovations that reduce carbon emissions and efficiencies that drive down energy use. By 2030, digital technology can cut global emissions by 15%. Cloud computing, 5G, AI, and IoT have the potential to dramatically reduce carbon emissions in sectors such as transport, agriculture, and manufacturing. techUK is working to foster the right policy framework and climate leadership so we can all play our part. We discuss how techUK focuses on applying emerging technologies in traditional forms of infrastructure to deliver innovative environmental solutions. We also talk about their core aim to work towards a policy and regulatory environment that removes the barriers to tech investment. For example, techUK will lobby for a tax, R&D, innovation, and business environment that enables all sectors to invest in digital tools to help them decarbonise and, in turn, supports clean tech organisations. Overall digital tech is the best way to reach net zero and deliver wider benefits such as cost savings, process efficiencies, and new business models.

Have you enjoyed the sweet taste of homegrown strawberries and asparagus? Or do you prefer the robustness of tomatoes and cucumbers? Well, it's time to appreciate healthy soil that provides nutrients for all those tasty treats. A handful of soil is filled with a complex system of microbes, insects, plant roots, worms, and microbes. Healthy soil is alive! To produce a great crop, we need to create conditions where our plants can grow their best. An ecosystem that uses waste products from plants and animals as food for other creatures, an ecosystem-based on relationships that feed each other...soils should be alive with earthworms, microorganisms, bugs and with a considerable amount of organic matter—dead plant material.” all providing an interchangeable cycle of life beneath us.   Who is Matthew Evans? Find more of Nourishing Matters to Chew On here. Tilth, glomalin, exudates … luscious words from the world of soils and a great conversation with Matthew Evans and Sadie Chrestman about Matthew's new book Soil – The incredible story of what keeps the earth, and us, healthy.  Matthew and Sadie Chrestman are the well known and much loved co–creators and operators of Fat Pig Farm, collaborators in arms and life and both strong advocates for open, fair, accountable food and farming systems and delicious food. This episode dives into just how very precious and remarkable soil is and why we need to get to know and ‘look after' it better – now. ‘Soil' is a joyful, magical book. It's packed with stacks of facts & curious tales to help us really ‘see', smell, feel and taste soil in creative, more informed ways and it packs a loving but really powerful punch for pretty much anyone who grows food or eats  – and it offers an uplifting call to action to better care for soil, for our and planetary health and food futures in a changing climate.  A rollercoaster of a read – ‘Soil' is a mix of Alice in Regenerationland; meets Dr Karl, & Costa; great scientists, quacks & visionary gardeners & farmers of the world – and Frenchman, Stephane Le Foll, who, at the Paris Climate Summit in 2015 touted the idea that an extra 0.4% organic carbon into soil each year might radically ‘garden' us away from runaway global warming …. There's a whole lot of love in this book – for soil and for the tiny trillions of bacteria, fungi and neglected critters in it and for people and the planet.  Listen in, enjoy and dig into Matthews latest book that is available from all good bookstores and online booksellers.  Image Acknowledgements: Sadie, Kitti Gould Photographer Matthew, Alan Benson Photographer  Matt's Website Fat Pig Farm @fat_pig_farm Instagram @nourishing_matters @foodswellaustralia  Facebook Nourishing Matters Foodswell                   Twitter @foodswell1 If you'd like to give Nourishing Matters a hand, you can buy us a coffee (or more!) by making a donation @ givenow.com.au/nourishing Listen @ https:///shows/nourishing Support the show: https://www.givenow.com.au/nourishing See /privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
