“I love working with historic sites. I've done a few events and installations working in old cathedrals; we did one with And& Festival in Leuven, and in Carlisle Church in Belfast with the AVA Festival guys, and the Acropolis of Athens, and lots of other venues. I love venues where I can turn up and map projections onto architecture. Particularly when you're using old historic buildings, they're full of feelings and ideas before you, you know, from the history and what you associate them with. That embeds itself into the music and the visuals that you're presenting, so you get this extra layer of engagement and emotion and ideas coming through, which I love. I generally use projectors rather than screens for that reason, so that I can use the architecture and try to make the show itself interact with it. Whenever I can, I try to project. It adds to the storytelling, I think, and it makes it feel more special.”How is being an artist different than a machine that is programmed to perform a set of actions? "Punk is more an attitude than a style of music. And I think that techno is way more punk than punk." The Spanish DJ discusses the ethos of the underground, vinyl DJing and more on this week's Exchange from AVA Festival. Héctor Oaks relocated from his hometown of Madrid to study at "Berlin University"—the clubs, record stores and underground parties that would shape his career as an artist. After once famously saying he could "live in peace" if he could play Berghain just once, the techno DJ has since graced the institution's dance floor multiple times and earned residencies at Herrensauna and Bassiani. Now one of a handful of in-demand, vinyl-only DJs, he's also a prolific artist and the head of two labels, KAOS and OAKS. What makes Oaks especially interesting as an interview subject, though, isn't his newfound popularity, but the underlying ethos that drives his music career. A self-described "techno punk," he reflects on what happens to the punk ethos around the underground once the underground becomes mainstream. "When you see that you've worked for the underground and then the underground becomes pop, do you want to fight against it, or do you want to be part of it?" he asks. "We're not only carrying the music, but we're carrying the values." In this interview, Oaks also talks about the art of playing vinyl, his new hip-hop project, working for the now-defunct Record Loft and his forthcoming album and live show. Today we premiere new rolling techno coming from straight from Research residents Aeron XTC & Taint for Free Download. The Dublin based DJs and producers showcase a blistering locked groove that leans on trippy soundscapes and thunderous low-end power. Research residents and co-owners Aeron XTC and Taint are two of Dublin's most seasoned techno DJs, having played in most venues across the capital as well as being festival favourites, the pair live and breathe techno music through every aspect of their life. Alongside playing regular show's together across Index, Farrier & Draper, Wigwam, Cellar, AVA Festival, Electric Picnic, Life Festival and more, the pair have been busy crafting a unique sound within the studio. The duo's workflow both behind the booth & within the studio complements each other greatly, each adding their own flavour to a unified sound which oozes out in an oddly satisfying yet contradictory manor. Having respectively played alongside some of the titans of the techno scene including; Karenn, Paula Temple, Perc, FJAAK, SPFDJ, Blawan and many more, the pair are well versed in the art of warming up a room – an often forgotten art of DJing in Dublin City. Their latest offering comes in the form of a ferocious loop driven slice of Dublin techno. The pair showcase an uncompromising taste of dynamic and rhythmic techno, that growls from the belly up. Intricate synth swells snarl through the mix as they play off a mind-bending lead sequence to nauseating effect. This is proper loop-driven techno, that packs a punch relentless flurry of punches. This weeks Mix Of The Week comes as a pleasant surprise, as Carlton Doom has been so kind to share his recorded set from the 2021 edition of AVA Festival with us. What a way to kickstart your weekend! Carlton Doom needs little introduction, as he is one of the most talented artists that our island has to offer. Boasting an array of releases on labels that include Cheeky Music Group, Hypercolour, Hotflush, Deep Sea Frequency and more. He possesses a vast musical style, bundled with copious amounts of knowledge within music production. The genre-merging producer has become synonymous with experimenting in different styles, mood and colours, while still portraying a somewhat identifiable sound, through warping synth lines and funked up broken rhythms. This mix is a live recorded set from his appearance at last years AVA Festival, where Carlton Doom performed at The Baltic. At a time when this was the first proper outing for a lot of festival goers due to the covid restrictions that were imposed as a result of the pandemic. This recording also includes the audio from the crowd at the set, which makes it even all the more special. All while encompassing an array of genres and anthems from start to finish, in true Carlton Doom fashion, this goes absolutely off. Check it out below! The exciting youngster has supplied just under two hours of dance floor heaven, running through a multitude of genres with sublime proficiency. Cartin has crafted a frenzied, but classy trip through his extensive knowledge of dance music. Fresh off the back of a debut Boiler Room performance at the renowned AVA Festival, releases on Extended Play, Nocturne & Rudimentary Records and captivating live set performances at Celtronic, Derry's very own Cartin features on our ever expanding Local Selection Mix series. Cartin is undoubtedly one of the most electrifying talents to emerge from the North of Ireland in recent years, Cartin's animated performances and captivating electronic productions have cemented his status as ‘next up' in Ireland's bass heavy talents. Cartin follows in the trailblazing footsteps of recent breakthrough artists such as Kessler and Sputnik One. Incorporating live guitar elements into almost everything he does, it's these elements that ensure that Cartin stands out in a sea of the same. Cartin has provided a kaleidoscopic package of electronic goodies, running through house, breaks, jungle, bass, electro, techno, garage and everything in between. The mix seems like a tribute to the dance floor, and all that Cartin loves. This week's Local Selection Mix comes from one of our favourite Irish DJs at the moment, Caoimhe. The thriving up and comer has provided yet another excellent trip through her record stacks, running through tribal, house, acid, techno, breaks and a whole lot more. County Antrim native Caoimhe began her DJ career in early 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks, catching the eyes of industry tastemakers in Ireland and the UK. Caoimhe had won three major DJ competitions in quick succession including a Breezeblock event to support Octo Octa, the AVA Festivals emerging DJ competition and the Mixmag and Coors Light DJ contest. These competitions led to Caoimhe supporting Octa Octa for Breezeblock who have been running some of Belfasts best club nights, opening up the coveted main stage at AVA Festival which is no mean feet for any DJ and lastly throwing it down at the Lab London for Mixmag. In 2021 Caoimhe was nominated for best Irish Electronic artist in the Hot Press reader's poll and was voted number 5 overall and at the start of 2022 joined the list of legendary NI artists like Kessler who have recorded at HÖR Berlin! Caoimhe has a broad spanning sound that routes around house, acid and electro. The County Antrim native superbly executes long and short blends with adroitness and ferocity when needed. Caoimhe has been known to play a rather uptempo and pumping style of house music, with lots of catchy vocals, bouncy baselines and uplifting chords. Caoimhe's carefully selected a varied yet perfectly crafted hour of selections for her Local Selection Mix. Jolting chords, squelchy acid, syncopated drum rhythms, jacking house anthems…this mix is ticking all the right boxes, perfect for the start, middle or end of the party. Caoimhe maintains the energy with supreme poise and pulls the trigger at the pinical moments. This is your Wednesday soundtrack. Jordan has been DJing for a long time. More than half his lifetime, in fact. While most of us were studying for our high school exams, Jordan was zipping across Ireland with a roped-in mate, playing all manner of rowdy clubs, often lacking the ID requirements that would typically get him bounced from the door. What’s more, he wasn’t a national sensation with a hit single, he just fucking loved it. Eventually, Jordan walked a Radio 1 competition that saw him play in front of a home crowd of 10000 people in his home city of Belfast. He was sixteen years old. While this may sound like the beginning of a particularly salacious Netflix documentary, we don’t need to ask “But where’s Jordan now?”, because he’s here, delivering the latest edition in the #PHANTASYMIX series. Between now and then, he’s maintained face as one of the most skilled DJs in Belfast, a city that thanks to it’s dedicated crowd and AVA Festival, has developed a burgeoning reputation as a hotbed of electronic music. Jordan helped build that foundation, co-running The Night Institute party for many years, hosting international names and then wisely scaling things back to a wide-ranging rave based on the skills of himself and fellow DJ Timmy Stewart. More recently, Jordan has been dancing down multiple avenues. As well as traversing Europe as a DJ, his Nocturne edits series have become some of the most sought-after slabs of wax in the market, beloved by Gerd Janson, Kornel Kovacs and our own Erol Alkan. His halcyon solo productions on Belters and Loose Fit have a luminescent, timeless quality that recalls Orbital or The Chemical Brothers alongside his constantly refreshed record collection from a bubbling underground. And now he’s here for the #PHANTASYMIX. Alongside the music, he spoke to John Thorp about those wild early days, the perfect edit, the Belfast music scene and the potential effects of the recent pandemic.
