This episode is created in cooperation with the Independent 20th Century art fair. It will be part of the fairs OVR. Brad Kahlhamer is an artist of indigenous descent, adopted by German-American parents. Being a free spirit, a wanderer and a person with unquenchable curiosity, profoundly shaped his multidisciplinary work. Kahlhamer's art often incorporates themes and imagery from indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest and Southwest, aiming to modernize traditional forms and present them in a contemporary context. In the early 1990s, he used materials like inner tube rubber for sculptures and later transitioned to oil paintings, characterized by thick layers, song lyrics, and primitive figures. His integration of ledger drawings, viewed by him as America's first graphic novels, is a significant aspect of his work. Growing up in Arizona, Brad enjoyed a childhood filled with freedom and outdoor adventures, which later fueled his creative expression. Music was integral to his early life, and he pursued it alongside visual arts, deeply influenced by differents bands and musical styles from rock, beat and soul to punk. In the early 1980s, Kahlhamer moved to New York to immerse himself in the vibrant art scene. There, he worked at Topps Chewing Gum, where he met Art Spiegelman and became involved in the underground comic scene. Currently, Kahlhamer is working on the Nomadic Studio project, creating a series of 100 Moleskine notebooks filled with drawings and ideas. Kahlhamer's art uniquely fuses his personal history, and a wide array of cultural influences, making it both deeply personal and broadly resonant. His work spans various media, including monumental paintings, intricate sculptures, installations, and drawings, drawing inspiration from cartoons, pop art, graphic novels, indigenous art, and his prolific sketchbooks. Brad will showcase paintings and drawings from the 1990s at the Independent 20th Century with Venus Over Manhattan and has a solo show planned with the gallery in 2025. How is being an artist different than a machine that is programmed to perform a set of actions? How can we stop thinking about artworks as objects, and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences? In this conversation with Max Cooper, we discuss the beauty and chaos of nature and the exploration of technology music and consciousness.Max Cooper is a musician with a PhD in computational biology. He integrates electronic music with immersive video projections inspired by scientific exploration. His latest project, Seme, commissioned by the Salzburg Easter Festival, merges Italian musical heritage with contemporary techniques, was also performed at the Barbican in London. He supplied music for a video narrated by Greta Thunberg and Pope Francis for COP26.In 2016, Cooper founded Mesh, a platform to explore the intersection of music, science and art. His Observatory art-house installation is on display at Kings Cross until May 1st.“I love working with historic sites. I've done a few events and installations working in old cathedrals; we did one with And& Festival in Leuven, and in Carlisle Church in Belfast with the AVA Festival guys, and the Acropolis of Athens, and lots of other venues. I love venues where I can turn up and map projections onto architecture. Particularly when you're using old historic buildings, they're full of feelings and ideas before you, you know, from the history and what you associate them with. That embeds itself into the music and the visuals that you're presenting, so you get this extra layer of engagement and emotion and ideas coming through, which I love. I generally use projectors rather than screens for that reason, so that I can use the architecture and try to make the show itself interact with it. Whenever I can, I try to project. It adds to the storytelling, I think, and it makes it feel more special.”https://maxcooper.nethttps://osterfestspiele.at/en/programme/2024/electro-2024https://meshmeshmesh.netwww.kingscross.co.uk/event/the-observatoryThe music featured on this episode was Palestrina Sicut, Cardano Circles, Fibonacci Sequence, Scarlatti K141. Lee Jaffe, a cross-disciplinary visual artist, musician, and poet, took photos of his friend, Jean-Michel Basquiat, when they traveled abroad in 1983. As a photographer, Jaffe had a connection to Basquiat, and their time spent together resulted in an archive of imagery that captured one of the art world's true legends through an unfiltered and authentic lens. “For me, watching him [Jean-Michel] paint reminded me of the times I would sit and play harmonica while Bob Marley, with his acoustic guitar, would be writing songs that were eventually to become classics,” Jaffe says. “With Jean and Bob, it seemed like they were channeling inspiration coming from an otherworldly place.”Basquiat and Jaffe connected over reggae music. It was the early 1980s in New York. Jaffe had been a member of Bob Marley's band, producer on Peter Tosh's first solo album. and collaborated with art world figures Helio Oiticica, Gordon Matta Clark, and Vito Acconci. Jaffe is the author of Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossroads."Jean-Michel Basquiat's combination of words and images, this visual poetry, just from a cultural standpoint has been so important. When I met him in 1983, black people were not allowed in the art market, pretty much. And you see that he broke down this barrier, which opened the door for all this multiculturalism within the art market. And you can't diminish the importance of that at all. It's helped to give a voice and an audience to all these incredible artists that might not have had that."www.leejaffe.comwww.rizzoliusa.com/book/9780847871841/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgPhoto credit: Paige Powell, Lee Jaffe and Jean-Michel Basquiat recording the installation of “Inverted Oak” : Carmel, New York

On today's show, we have 2X heart transplant recipient Steven Taibbi. He discusses his latest book. 'Grateful Guilt: Living in the Shadow of My Heart'. In his book, Steven documents his life's journey dealing with his heart issues along with all the up's and downs life has thrown his way. In a rare moment of extended family bonding, Steven Taibbi a 2X heart donor recipient just met with the family of the recent donor. The family, that did not originally respond to the thank you from Mr. Taibbi, would later contact him when they were ready. The donor's mother expressed their desire to meet him. Steven arrived with a stethoscope in hand, should they wish to listen to the heart of their son and father beating in Steve's chest. All of the women in the family (mother, sister, daughter, ex-wife, and aunt) took turns listening, while the male members (father and sons) opted not to listen. They informed Steve, that night, that they considered him family now. Statistically, only 3% of donor families answer any correspondence, let alone meet the recipient, and it sometimes does not go well. However, in this case, the donor's mother expressed her joy that her son's life helped not only save Steven's life but several others as a multiple organ donor. For 25 years, Steven owned his own production company and was a Director/Producer/Director of Photography for both corporate and commercial video and film. He has also been a contributing writer for Videography magazine and other productions. He has written television scripts, TV and Radio commercials and was the lyricist for a song-writing team. Mr. Taibbi was the Vice President of Transplant Speakers International and is currently a public speaker and organ donation advocate, as well as a professional photographer.  Pick up his book on www.amazon.com Paperback, ISBN: 9780578473390 Also today we speak with singer/songwriter INIKO and listen to their latest HIT song, 'The King's Affirmation'. To wrap up today's show we speak with singer/songwriter Sidney Riley and listen to his latest HIT song, 'It's Always Been You'. Originally hailing from Washington, D.C., Sidney has been involved with the arts since he learned to play the piano at age 9. After discovering his deep passion for singing, as a cast member of 'Children's Choice', a popular children's British television show filmed in the Middle East, Riley decided to take his musical career more seriously. While in high school, he formed an acapella group and began writing original music. During that time, he alongside his high school choir had the fortune to perform at The Kennedy Center honoring Quincy Jones.  Soon after celebrating this momentous occasion, Riley fell critically ill with meningoencephalitis, a rare disease that had him fighting for his life and in a coma for several months. Upon waking from his coma, he embarked on the long road to recovery.  He credits his recovery, in part, to the role music played in his life and the motivation it gave him to get better. Since then, he has made music his priority. Currently involved in several projects for himself and other artists from various genres, Sidney is ready to put his best foot forward while letting music guide his journey.  To keep up with all that he's doing, follow him on the web at: www.iamsidneyriley.com

In this episode, I talk with Artist, Musician and Educator, Paige Clark Perkinson. Paige was a working actor, when she decided to start her family. She talks about her struggles with anxiety and depression while her son was still in her belly, and how after he was born, she found herself questioning if the decision to create a family meant that parts of her would have to disappear. “Things were fine for a while. And then it came time to get back in the game and start acting again. And then there was this whole piece of guilt about where I spent my time. And I felt there was this resistance of my identity being limited to only a mother from then on. I had to say that I was an actor. I am an artist. How dare you? I got really defensive for a while.”Paige talks about raising her son, who is one quarter Korean, when both she and her mother weren't raised in the Korean culture. “It's been a weird experience to be singled out and excluded for something that I really don't feel a part of. I don't get the benefits of being part of a community. But I get the detriments of being excluded, because I look like I'm part of that community.”What started as Paige's “day job” working as an arts educator, has now become her primary focus. She is still an artist, she is still an actor, she is still a musician, but they have moved to the background of her life. She loves her students, she loves her job, but she acknowledges the little deaths she has had to go through in her life. “I am mourning expectations, mourning the loss of these hopes. That's definitely how I would describe even my reaction to wanting a girl but having a boy. I was mourning the expectation. And I will be happy about what I do get. But first I need to mourn the change.”Highlights from Paige:"Whether it's at nine in the morning, and they're asleep or it's at eight o'clock at night, when we're in tech rehearsal and tensions are running high, I think about using my powers for good. Theater tips over into the realm of non-academic. It gets really personal and emotional and I thrive on being there for them. I gives me purpose, it gives me meaning.""So that's how I'm approaching having a quarter racial, Korean son— helping him notice the differences in other kids around him. We live in a diverse neighborhood, I think, and in the summertime, he'll say, 'Oh their skin is brown' and I will tell him that yes, some people's skin is brown, some is peach, some is very dark and that is all okay.""I wish at 18 I had believed that. I wish I could have stood in my own beauty and my own power at that age. Saying it now, I think I'm definitely trying to more mindfully do that for myself.  I am 35. I weigh more now than I did when I was 18. But I can still say, "You're beautiful. You're enough. You look great. "Don't Miss a Beat. Susan Hughes is from Belfast. She has completed many artist residencies in Ireland and Scandinavia where she has used her fiddle playing as a bartering tool to gain access to local stories. She graduated in 2021 from the University of Ulster receiving the Centre for Contemporary Art (Derry) and Platform Arts (Belfast) graduate awards and was longlisted for the Royal Dublin Society graduate award. ARTIST STATEMENT Hughes is led by stories down roads of research arriving at the production of artworks in the form of video, installation, and sculpture. She and her subjects describe deeply personal physical and physiological sensations while being inside their bodies, inside intense encounters with nature. Language is used as a malleable material creating space for alternative narratives to be invented. Manufactured materials such as electrical light, digital video, and bright perspex have been effective in their artifice as tools to explore and express these natural, yet often psychedelic, sensual experiences. She is interested in the interaction of human and non-human at the edges of seas and mountains where the membrane between this world and the otherworld seems to be thin enough to briefly pass through. "Evidenced by the upsurge during lockdown of the popularity of sea swimming and gardening, it's catching on: this thing of grabbing onto rocks, being held tightly by cold water, plunging a hand deep into earth, lingering there for a bit too long, indulging in this touch. Surely I'm not the only person who sneakily licks salt residue off my own arm?" --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/experimentalfilmpodcast/support
