On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast, we revisit a topic that simply fails to change much, video game movies. It's been decades since Hollywood began cranking out video game adaptations, but unlike other mediums, movies cannot seem to find that sweet spot that appeals to both gamers and film fans alike. It's rare that Hollywood even approaches a good movie with these properties. So this episode we discuss this struggle, and answer the most important question: why can't video game movies get it right?! Also this week: movie and TV news including a discussion on the evolution of binge watching and coming back to weekly releases, intellectual properties taking over content, as well as spoiler-free reviews of Uncharted and Dog.  Then we are joined by the Executive Director of the Beloit International Film Festival to discuss the event, which runs from Feb 25 - Mar 6, 2022. All this and more on this week's all-new episode of The Hollywood Outsider podcast. How Do You Feel About "Inspired By" In Film? On this episode, we're discussing where we stand on "inspired by". Coming out this past week was Wendy, a film about a group of kids lost on an island that is “inspired by Peter Pan”. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and 1917 were inspired by true events, namely the Manson Murders and World War 1. Just Mercy was a film that recently was inspired by very true events.  So many films use this as a way to sell their movies, even when they play fast and loose with the original details they claim inspired them. We have numerous serious films that are “inspired by” works of fiction, as well as real life people and cases, but veer pretty far from the source material. So where do we stand on this: Necessary marketing tactic, or cheap gimmick to garner legitimacy, or something else?  Also this week: spoiler-free reviews of The Invisible Man, Guns Akimbo, and All the Bright Places, a fun game called How Do You Survive?, upcoming releases, The HO Teachable Minute, and our coverage of the Beloit International Film Festival. Did you grow up on films like Airplane, Blazing Saddles, or There's Something About Mary? Films that often made light of race, gender, sex, handicaps, and all other manners of things that shouldn't be mocked? If you're like us, you remember laughing at things that you knew, deep in your soul, were horrible to make light of. Yet, at the same time, these inappropriate outbursts of comedic inspiration broke down even the strongest composures, and even occasionally sparked a conversation that was previously too uncomfortable to have.  Our topic for this week revolves around politically incorrect comedies, and specifically if the concept of such is currently as dead as the western. Then we turn our focus to the Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF), which takes place annually in the city of Beloit, Wisconsin. Running for 10 days, typically at the end of Feb or the beginning of March, the festival plays 100+ films from over 25 different countries ranging from narrative features, to documentaries, to shorts, and even features a showdown between Illinois and Wisconsin filmmakers. The films screen in a variety of local venues, so not only is it a festival where a vast assortment of films can be found, but it also supports the local economy and involves residents working as volunteers as well. On this episode of The Hollywood Outsider, we turn a spotlight to BIFF and our thoughts on the festival, as well as reviews for several of the films we screened there. The drama short film is based on the life of Lester Liptak, who's untold story, along with those of many other underage children who enlisted in armed services during that time period, inspired Ryan Allsop (Lester's nephew) to write and direct Mount Liptak. The film, which recently won Best Drama Short at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards for the month of November 2017 and Best Short Drama at the 2018 Beloit International Film Festival, is set for official release in 2018.  Email the show themccpodcast@gmail.com Twitter @themccpodcast Instagram @themccpodcast Facebook www.facebook.com/themancavechroniclespodcast www.themancavechonicles.podbean.com
